RE: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Everybody,

I have always been amazed about how AT&T and other big carriers can charge
for this, after all, if you have 2 Gig of data with your package and you are
paying for it, shouldn't you be able to use that data as you see fit? Here
in Canada no carrier is allowed to charge extra for tethering, it's illegal.
I also don't think there are extra charges for that in Australia, NZ or
Europe.

Why doesn't every person in the States who has a Smartphone flood their
Congress Man''s or Congress Woman's office with letters asking that the
government put a stop to that, if a ruling has been passed to force Verizon
to do it, why doesn't this apply to other major carriers, sounds hardly fair
to me.

hi,
does anyone know for certain if adding the ability to use your phone as a
personal hot spot breaks the contract with at&t. I have the old unlimited data
plan, and as you can imagine don't want to give it up. but from time to time i
need to use my phone as a personal hotspot. i have thought about an air card
for my computer, but that is an extra charge, but i don't need it is often to
make adding a new plan worth it.

Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Scott Howell
Raul,

I really wonder if AT&T just wants to drive customers away because they sure as
hell seem intent on doing just that. I had a long conversation with AT&T
customer service and it was apparent they could not even accurately explain the
plans. I had to talk to two different reps to get the story. THe part that
really has me rankled is that when iOS 6 is released, I have read and AT&T
confirmed that if you wanted to use Face TIme on the 3G network you would have
to be covered by one of the shared data plans. Now regardless of how often I
would use Face Time, I cannot imagine that AT&T can block this service. I
understand it is their network, but I did not sign a contract that limited me
to specific protocols etc. either. I am not sure what AT&T's plans are, but
they really do seem to have lost interest in customer service. So, I for one
will not be upgrading and in fact I cannot wait until next October when my AT&T
contract ends because my hope is the field of opportunity will be broader.
I am pretty disappointed in how AT&T has handled the whole shared data plan
issue. THey really could have capitalized on the opportunity and really made it
a sweet deal for customers-create a win win situation, but guess that was not
their goal.

Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Scott Howell
Because it takes enough people to complain and figuring out the process is very
time consuming. I'm hoping that I can find some time to figure out how the FCC
dealt with Verizon and maybe that would give me what I need to launch a
campaign against AT&T. I agree that data is data and charging for tethering or
using Face Time is asinine.
I don't mind paying for a service and especially if the provider is really
pumping money into upgrades and improvement of service. I do not believe all
these complicated plans are designed to further the improvement of service. :)

Re: AT&T data shared plans - Was Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Scott Howell
Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from perhaps 4Gb
to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes up. So, the only
way these data plans make sense is for people with lots of devices. AT&T really
did not take into account the families with two or three phones. The $70 for
unlimited text and voice is not to bad I suppose, although the cost for text is
so out of line with reality, but hey it is a cash-cow for carriers. :)

2012-08-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Scott, I think when you say cash cow you have it spot on. I mean,
let's take texting, it wasn't originally designed for communications
between users to begin with and it doesn't cost the company more than a
third of a cent to send out a text, yet they charge $30 a month for
unlimited? It's because of so many people liking to text that they can
get away with it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for companies making
money, after all, they are a business and in it for the money, but still
seems a bit steep. Yet people like myself like the offerings and so pay
for it. So, I guess I can't complain too much since I'm a satisfied
customer over all. However it wouldn't hurt my feelings if the plans
were reconsidered.

is 190 plus tax. Now if you take one of their older plans like the 700 minute
shared minute plan with unlimited text and mobile to any mobile and 3 phones,
the cost is 60 for the plan, plus 30 for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each
phone, plus the data on those phones. So, 60 plus 30 plus 30 for 3 phones makes
120. Now add data. Let's say 30 per phone for 3gb each. that's an extra 90
making it 210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan for those same 3 phones will
save you 20. However if you have an older plan like the one paying 15 or 20 per
month on data plans, then switching to the new data shared plan costs more.

Hope this helps.

2012-08-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Scott. yeah, I think AT&T really dropped the ball with the data
shared plans. Also, they haven't trained their reps correctly either. I
had a similar experience as you when calling them to see what's what? I
finally just looked at the web site and got the prices that way. They at
least have it laid out in tables and so I was able to make sense of the
pricing structures. The data plan shared system isn't too confusing
really once I saw it, but still, better training is in order.

I've always been a happy customer in terms of how I've been treated,
meaning that I have always gotten a nice rep, patient reps, and have
never been talked down to. However that doesn't mean that I'll always
stay with them just because the treat me right either. I have 3 phones
on my plan, 1 isn't on contract, 1 has about 5 months left, and
unfortunately 1 just got a new 2 year contract in January when I got my 4S.

So, we'll see what's up in the near future.

Really in the end whether it's Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T, they will all
find a way to get the most money out of you, however right now Verizon
is looking rather juicy for the simple reason they aren't allowed to
charge you for tethering.

I really wonder if AT&T just wants to drive customers away because they sure as hell seem intent on
doing just that. I had a long conversation with AT&T customer service and it was apparent they
could not even accurately explain the plans. I had to talk to two different reps to get the story. THe
part that really has me rankled is that when iOS 6 is released, I have read and AT&T confirmed that
if you wanted to use Face TIme on the 3G network you would have to be covered by one of the shared data
plans. Now regardless of how often I would use Face Time, I cannot imagine that AT&T can block this
service. I understand it is their network, but I did not sign a contract that limited me to specific
protocols etc. either. I am not sure what AT&T's plans are, but they really do seem to have lost
interest in customer service. So, I for one will not be upgrading and in fact I cannot wait until next
October when my AT&T contract ends because my hope is the field of opportunity will be broad

er.

I am pretty disappointed in how AT&T has handled the whole shared data plan
issue. THey really could have capitalized on the opportunity and really made it a
sweet deal for customers-create a win win situation, but guess that was not their
goal.

On Aug 29, 2012, at 11:43 PM, Raul A. Gallegos wrote:

Hi, there was a recent judgement passed against Verizon that they had to provide
tethering for free. Whether the other big name cell guys will follow suit is
anyone's guess. So, right now AT&T still charges for tethering services. Many
people with jailbroken cell phones use an app called PDA Net and then they can
tether on their existing data.

On another note, I agree that the new data shared plan that AT&T is so-called
offering is a joke. It will end up costing us more than what we pay now for our 3
phones if we switch to it. Unlimited minutes? Big deal. I get that already thanks
to Google Voice. So, it's not an attractive deal for me. Now, if they only charged
like $9.99 per extra phone then it would be worth considering, but not right now.

Re: AT&T data shared plans - Was Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Sean Paul
Here's part of the issue going forward though. Currently AT&T doesn't force
you to choose one of their shared data plans. However my understanding from
a area manager of AT&T's is that once the iPhone 5 comes out. They're going
to adopt the same model VZ has. Meaning that if you want the upgrade price
on a device. They're going to force you to switch in to 1 of these shared
data plans. So, unless you wanta either pay full price for your devices or
buy older 1's off of Ebay, etc. Now, I'm not sure about any of you. However,
I don't have the money to pay full price for a new iPhone 5 when it comes
out. So, perhaps none of us will have much of a choice going forward. Or,
we'll keep using older devices. These are questions we'll have to ask
ourselves. We'll also have to wait & see if they really adopt this model
going henceforth.

Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from perhaps
4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes up. So, the
only way these data plans make sense is for people with lots of devices.
AT&T really did not take into account the families with two or three phones.
The $70 for unlimited text and voice is not to bad I suppose, although the
cost for text is so out of line with reality, but hey it is a cash-cow for
carriers. :)

Re: accessibility of mobile banking apps on IOS:

2012-08-30 Thread Sandra Heaton

Hi Scott,

Thanks for that. Of course I will keep you posted and I am so glad that I
am not cluttering up the list. I am a bit shy really of saying the wrong
thing sometimes.

I would say though with this app, you do have to think about it a bit, but
voiceover does work quite nicely with it. Even though on some of the pages
it doesn't have marked buttons you know when it says savings account button
you just press savings account and it takes you there. Its well worth
looking at. I myself am not a very techy person and I have no sight but I
have managed to use this app.

regards.

Hi Sandra.
If no one in the current thread is following this conversation, you
may still want to post. Remember, the list archives are searchable, so
what you post now may help someone else further down the road. And, I,
personally, would like to know your thoughts on this app. I don't use
that particular bank, but I work with people all over the country, so
it's good to know if something is or is not accessible.

Thanks,
Scott

Yesterday after reading this thread I downloaded the paid vbersion of the

commands, folders or categories as they want to call them and can synch with
dropbox. Definitely well worth a buck and well worth more than that really.

He just updated it to sync with DropBox, and the extremely good

Word 2007/2010 version of Word documents.
The update just came out today, and I have only had a little while
to test, but this is looking very good.
I think we may have a good alternative for editing Word documents.
I hope to have time at work today to do more with it.
I don't seem to be getting the automatic syncing to work both

But, it does not take long to sync.
The paid version is $4.99, I think.

Re: AT&T data shared plans - Was Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Damashe Thomas
I would like to point out that the only thing verizon does is forces you to
give up unlimited data if you choos to use an upgrade. They still off the
2GB and 5GB data lans for $30 and $50 respectively. So you could go with one
of those if you weren't interested in the shared data package. It is
interesting that at&t may adopt this strategy after the release of the new
iPhone. Currentl as a verizon customer with unlimited data, I am slightly
envious that at&t customers can upgrade without giving up unlimited data
with the only restriction being that you can't use facetime over 3G when
that becomes available.

Here's part of the issue going forward though. Currently AT&T doesn't
force you to choose one of their shared data plans. However my
understanding from a area manager of AT&T's is that once the iPhone 5
comes out. They're going to adopt the same model VZ has. Meaning that if
you want the upgrade price on a device. They're going to force you to
switch in to 1 of these shared data plans. So, unless you wanta either pay
full price for your devices or buy older 1's off of Ebay, etc. Now, I'm
not sure about any of you. However, I don't have the money to pay full
price for a new iPhone 5 when it comes out. So, perhaps none of us will
have much of a choice going forward. Or, we'll keep using older devices.
These are questions we'll have to ask ourselves. We'll also have to wait &
see if they really adopt this model going henceforth.

Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from
perhaps 4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes
up. So, the only way these data plans make sense is for people with lots
of devices. AT&T really did not take into account the families with two or
three phones. The $70 for unlimited text and voice is not to bad I
suppose, although the cost for text is so out of line with reality, but
hey it is a cash-cow for carriers. :)

Hi, basically here's how they work. You get unlimited voice calls and
texts. You pay for a base plan, which doesn't include any phones, but
then you pay for each phone you add. As an example, if you go with a 4gb
plan with 3 phones, you would pay $70 for the plan itself and $40 per
phone. So, do the math. 70 + 120 is 190 plus tax. Now if you take one of
their older plans like the 700 minute shared minute plan with unlimited
text and mobile to any mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60 for the plan,
plus 30 for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each phone, plus the data on
those phones. So, 60 plus 30 plus 30 for 3 phones makes 120. Now add
data. Let's say 30 per phone for 3gb each. that's an extra 90 making it
210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan for those same 3 phones will save
you 20. However if you have an older plan like the one paying 15 or 20
per month on data plans, then switching to the new data shared plan costs
more.

Hope this helps.

RE: AT&T data shared plans - Was Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Scott and Raul,

I am in Canada so I only know what I hear on here and Today in iOS when it
comes to AT&T, but what about all the people who don't want or need a shared
plan and just want 1 iPhone? I am amazed by what AT&T seems to get away
with, $30 for unlimited texting? Really? I am a very light data user, but I
pay $45 here in Canada for unlimited voice minutes and airt time minutes
across all of Canada and then a $10 add-on gives me voice mail, call display
and unlimited texting and that includes international text messages. I
wouldn't be surprised if some day soon large carriers like AT&T, Verizon and
Sprint have to change their act and start dropping prices because of the
competition and customer pressure. After all, some of us here remember how
expensive long distance was back in the 80s and still part of the 90s. It
used to cost $ 2 a minute to call Germany, there were cheaper rates for
certain times of the day etc. Now it doesn't matter when you call and even
from the big providers it's only a few Cents a minute, we are talking about
a 95 or 98% drop in price.

By the way, it does sound as if T-Mobil will be getting the new iPhone in
September which, incidently, will not be called the iPhone 5, at least it is
extremely unlikely that it will be called iPhone 5.

Sieghard

RE: App to monitor flights

2012-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sandy,

The Kayak Mobile app allows you to check on flight status for flights up to
3 days in advance. The app, however, is not free and also allows you to book
flights, cars, hotels, it has a My Trips section where you can add
everything to do with a trip, e.g. flights, cars, hotels and it will all be
put in chronological order, there is a Check List and many other features. I
quite like the app, ut I also know there are Flight Trackers out there which
do just that and there are probably some free ones. You might want to search
the archive, this has come up before and also take a look at
www.Appleviss.com and see if any of them are reviewed there.

Good luck,

Sieghard

There is no clock app on the iPad. There is an iPad only app though that
has the same if not similar interface to the clock app on the iPhone and
iPod Touch. Can't remember the name though.

Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Scott Howell
Raul,

You know I have to agree that the customer service (other than the lack of
training on some of this) has been pretty good. The site was a little difficult
to navigate with Safari for some reason and it seemed to have something to do
with the table layout. In any case overall I have been happy with the service,
but I am disappointed that AT&T seems a little to intent on making things tough
for customers who have had unlimited data plans by not allowing them to have
access to even tethering if you were willing to pay for it. Although I am
surprised the FCC has not told AT&T they cannot charge for tethering yet. Yes,
time will tell and the future will be interesting. Hey once everyone has a
phone on some form of the LTE network it may really change the game.

Naa, your kidding right? :) Yes, the U.S. market is still pretty backward in
many ways. I may be all wrong on this, but I think part of it has to do with
the fact that the carriers operate on different technologies, at least the
three largest carriers. I think as the playing field becomes more level the
offerings and restrictions will change. In other words as customers gain more
flexibility they gain more power and the carriers will have to work to keep and
gain customers. For now the technological differences between GSM, CDMA, and
even the differences between these two technologies helps the carriers. Then
again what do I know.

LookTel Recognizer allows users with visual impairments or blindness to
identify cans, packages, ID or credit cards, DVDs, and similar items. Users can

LookTel Recognizer is powered by an evolution of LookTel's patented and

an app that has helped thousands of users with visual impairments or blindness
to instantly identify and count bills. There's no need to hold the camera still
or capture a photo and wait for a result – recognition happens instantly, and
in real-time. Additionally, the app does not require an active internet
connection, which means it can be used at any location, anytime.

Recognizer allows users to backup and export their created databases via
E-Mail, enabling them to restore a database from lost or replaced devices,
share it with other members of the community.

Please note that users with severe visual impairments or blindness will require
sighted assistance to initially create the image library. The image library
must be setup before LookTel Recognizer can be used to identify objects.

How to use Recognizer:
Once the app is downloaded on your iOS device, you must create an image library
before you can start recognizing items. Creating the library is easy, and can
be fun, especially if you have a friend or family member who is a shutterbug.
While it may seem to take a lot of time, it takes far less than most people
imagine to create an excellent library of images. Once the library exists, less
and less time is required of a sighted person, as you will find Recognizer can
already identify most items that are used daily reliably and accurately every
time.

LookTel Recognizer allows users with visual impairments or blindness to
identify cans, packages, ID or credit cards, DVDs, and similar items. Users can
store images of objects in a library or database, and then simply point the
iPhone's camera at an object and the phone will recognize and describe the item
instantly. A barcode scanner is also included to provide additional labeling
help.

LookTel Recognizer is powered by an evolution of LookTel's patented and
proprietary object recognition technology featured in LookTel's "Money Reader",
an app that has helped thousands of users with visual impairments or blindness
to instantly identify and count bills. There's no need to hold the camera still
or capture a photo and wait for a result – recognition happens instantly, and
in real-time. Additionally, the app does not require an active internet

iTunes help needed -- access privileges denied

2012-08-30 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

I bought some music on my iPhone today and when I tried to sync with
my laptop a strange thing happened. The sync seemed to be going okay,
but then I got a message that the library could not be saved because
of an access privilege error. So I clicked okay then rebooted the
laptop.

When I restarted iTunes and plugged the iPhone in I was able to sync
without that error. But the weird thing is that although all the songs
I purchased appear to be on both the phone and the laptop, the
playlist I created which contains the new songs is not. The playlist
is still on the phone but for whatever reason it will not sync back to
the laptop.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Kimber

Re: AT&T data shared plans - Was Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Sean Paul
I guess that I didn't realize that VZ still offered those plans. I'm sure
that AT&T will also keep some sort of plans similar to those but force those
of us who still have our unlimited data to choose either 1 of those plans or
a shared data plan. Whilst I don't like loosing my unlimited data. I'm not
going to throw up my hands & scream & shout. As I'm having to pay Comcast
each month for their internet which I use at home. So, I'll turn on YFi &
just use it whilst at home & save my data for when I'm mobile.

I would like to point out that the only thing verizon does is forces you to
give up unlimited data if you choos to use an upgrade. They still off the
2GB and 5GB data lans for $30 and $50 respectively. So you could go with
one of those if you weren't interested in the shared data package. It is
interesting that at&t may adopt this strategy after the release of the new

So, unless you wanta either
pay full price for your devices or buy older 1's off of Ebay, etc. Now,
I'm not sure about any of you. However, I don't have the money to pay
full price for a new iPhone 5 when it comes out. So, perhaps none of us
will have much of a choice going forward. Or, we'll keep using older
devices. These are questions we'll have to ask ourselves. We'll also have
to wait & see if they really adopt this model going henceforth.

Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from
perhaps 4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes
up. So, the only way these data plans make sense is for people with lots
of devices. AT&T really did not take into account the families with two
or three phones. The $70 for unlimited text and voice is not to bad I
suppose, although the cost for text is so out of line with reality, but
hey it is a cash-cow for carriers. :)

On Aug 29, 2012, at 11:53 PM, Raul A. Gallegos
wrote:

Hi, basically here's how they work. You get unlimited voice calls and
texts. You pay for a base plan, which doesn't include any phones, but
then you pay for each phone you add. As an example, if you go with a 4gb
plan with 3 phones, you would pay $70 for the plan itself and $40 per
phone. So, do the math. 70 + 120 is 190 plus tax. Now if you take one of
their older plans like the 700 minute shared minute plan with unlimited
text and mobile to any mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60 for the plan,
plus 30 for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each phone, plus the data
on those phones. So, 60 plus 30 plus 30 for 3 phones makes 120. Now add
data. Let's say 30 per phone for 3gb each. that's an extra 90 making it
210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan for those same 3 phones will save
you 20. However if you have an older plan like the one paying 15 or 20
per month on data plans, then switching to the new data shared plan
costs more.

Hope this helps.

Re: Tweet list basic help

2012-08-30 Thread jeremy

Hey Ioana.
This is what I came up with, so forgive me if it's not completely
accurate. It seems that the first two buttons, hashtag and username are
used to insert the associated mark into your tweet. As you may already
know, both the # and @ characters are used for different things in a
tweet. First, you use the hash sign to point out a word or phrase, and
if this hashtag gets repeated enough, you can actually get a trend
going. Not sure what this is used for, aside from trending topics, but,
there ya go. The second, the att sign is used before a user's name to
send tweets to them. This may only be for retweeting and replying, not
so sure. Anyways, I'd first assumed you could press the username button
and type the first letter of there username to have a list generated
from your followers to choose from, but that didn't work. Also, if you
wanted, you could also generate these marks straight from the on-screen
keyboard to. the third button, options, will pull up an area, giving you
access to your camera, for taking a picture I assume, your photo library
for pictures already on the phone, and an option to shorten a URL. You
will also see a now playing button, which I assume sends a tweet of your
current media playing in the music app. The usernames button should
bring up a list of followers which you should be able to click to have
their name placed in the edit box. Lastly, the geotag button, I think,
inserts information on your location, but I don't know for sure. To get
back out of this area, press the keyboard for the on-screen keyboard to
pop back up on the screen.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Re: Tweet list basic help

2012-08-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, this sounds like you might be looking for help on Twitter, not
Tweetlist. The reason I say this is because you asked what buttons for
hash tag and users. A person who knows Twitter, will know what these are
when they appear in any app, not just TweetList.

Regarding TweetList specifically, they have made it super voice over
friendly. You can double-tap, double-tap and hold, and triple-tap on a
tweet to get many different options on what to do. Now, the things to do
are twitter based, and twitter specific and if you know what these
things are, then they will make sense. For example a hash tag is the
number sign symbol which is placed before a word which you want to be
easily searched. If I post a tweet about an accessible app for iOS I
might put #ios and #a11y and #blind as part of my tweet so that people
looking for these can find my tweet easier. A user name is the at sign
before someone's twitter name. This is done if you want to mention that
person. So, if you write the tweet I am having lunch with @rau47 today.
Then I would see it because you used the at sign in front of my twitter
username rau47.

I hope this helps you get started.

Re: AT&T data shared plans - Was Re: iPhone as personal hotspot.

2012-08-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Scott. Completely agreed. AT&T nor any other provider should have
the right to tell you what programs, protocols, ETC you can use on your
data plan. After all, data is data. Sure, they could try to justify it
by saying that FT uses more than other stuff, but then, why allow Skype?
It doesn't make sense and just looks like another ploy to make yet more
money. They probably would filter out Skype if they figured that a lot
of people knew about it. However to the grandma who just got an iPhone
for her 80th birthday, she will probably see FT first instead of Skype.
I would venture that this is the reason AT&T targeted FT instead of Skype.

one of their older plans like the 700 minute shared minute plan with
unlimited text and mobile to any mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60
for the plan, plus 30 for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each

that's an extra 90 making it 210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan

Hi, the app looks to be very VO friendly. I looked at the site and it
appears that the cost is $24.95 for unlimited streaming of books. This

like a limit of 2 or 3 books per month for a lower price. In an way this
reminds me of Netflix which allows you to stream unlimited movies and tv

Re: Netflix et al?

2012-08-30 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, you can somewhat use the Netflix app on an iOS device. It takes some
work-arounds, but can be done. If you have a Roku, you can get Netflix
there, but it's not accessible to the blind. If you have an Apple TV
then you can use Netflix there. We have Netflix and we all like it very
much. Although Roku isn't accessible, if a sighted person puts me on my
Star Trek shows, I can easily navigate from memory on where I want to
go. I also have an Apple TV and use Netflix there a lot. I don't use it
as much on my iPhone, but I don't have a specific reason for that.
Watching TV series using the app is problematic, but watching movies
works rather well.

Good luck, and may the odds be forever in your favor.

RE: AudioBooks.com

2012-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Raul and others,

I tried out AudioBooks.com a while back and the one thing I didn't like was
that I started listening to a book and when I was about half way through (a
day or 2 after I started) the book was suddenly not available any more. I
contacted their support and they apologized for the inconvenience and
explained that the licence for them to have that book somehow expired or got
pulled and that there was nothing they could do about this. In the end I
bought the book on Audible because I did like it a lot and really wanted to
finish it.

I guess for somebody like me who probably goes from anywhere from 2 to 4
books a week this would be a good deal if it was reliable since my Platinum
Audible membership which gives me 2 books a months is $22.95. However, those
books are mine and while I heard about books being pulled from Audible, they
still work and are yours in your library once you purchased them. I also
find that by taking advantage of all their $4.99 or $7.99 sales, their "Buy
3 books for 2 credits" or "Buy 3 extra credits for $34.49 etc. I average
about $8 per book which I consider not a bad deal at all.

Regards,
Sieghard

Skype I can use it on wi-fi or cell network. I can talk to users on their

Here's part of the issue going forward though. Currently AT&T doesn't
force you to choose one of their shared data plans. However my
understanding from a area manager of AT&T's is that once the iPhone 5
comes out. They're going to adopt the same model VZ has. Meaning that
if you want the upgrade price on a device. They're going to force you
to switch in to 1 of these shared data plans. So, unless you wanta
either pay full price for your devices or buy older 1's off of Ebay,
etc. Now, I'm not sure about any of you. However, I don't have the
money to pay full price for a new iPhone 5 when it comes out. So,
perhaps none of us will have much of a choice going forward. Or,
we'll keep using older devices. These are questions we'll have to ask
ourselves. We'll also have to wait & see if they really adopt this
model going henceforth.

Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from
perhaps 4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge
goes up. So, the only way these data plans make sense is for people
with lots of devices. AT&T really did not take into account the
families with two or three phones. The $70 for unlimited text and
voice is not to bad I suppose, although the cost for text is so out of
line with reality, but hey it is a cash-cow for carriers. :)

On Aug 29, 2012, at 11:53 PM, Raul A. Gallegos
wrote:

Hi, basically here's how they work. You get unlimited voice calls and
texts. You pay for a base plan, which doesn't include any phones, but
then you pay for each phone you add. As an example, if you go with a
4gb plan with 3 phones, you would pay $70 for the plan itself and $40
per phone. So, do the math. 70 + 120 is 190 plus tax. Now if you take
one of their older plans like the 700 minute shared minute plan with
unlimited text and mobile to any mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60
for the plan, plus 30 for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each
phone, plus the data on those phones. So, 60 plus 30 plus 30 for 3
phones makes 120. Now add data. Let's say 30 per phone for 3gb each.
that's an extra 90 making it 210. So maybe going with the 4gb plan
for those same 3 phones will save you 20. However if you have an
older plan like the one paying 15 or 20 per month on data plans, then
switching to the new data shared plan costs more.

Hope this helps.

I agree. There are more and more preay carriers in the u.s that either carry
or suort the phones that customers want. Most, if not all, are using one of
the big carriers network coverage so we have the option of nationwide
coverage for a fraction of the price. It is true that you wouldn't get
subsidized rices on new devices, but in the case of verizon, that doesn't
make much of a difference for some users like myself. I can't lose unlimited
data at this point. I probably won't be getting the new ihone when it comes
out, but when I am able, I will pay full rice because I rely on using date
with no restrictions.

Hi Scott and Raul,

I am in Canada so I only know what I hear on here and Today in iOS when it
comes to AT&T, but what about all the people who don't want or need a
shared

plan and just want 1 iPhone? I am amazed by what AT&T seems to get away
with, $30 for unlimited texting? Really? I am a very light data user, but
I

pay $45 here in Canada for unlimited voice minutes and airt time minutes
across all of Canada and then a $10 add-on gives me voice mail, call
display

and unlimited texting and that includes international text messages. I
wouldn't be surprised if some day soon large carriers like AT&T, Verizon
and

Sprint have to change their act and start dropping prices because of the
competition and customer pressure. After all, some of us here remember how
expensive long distance was back in the 80s and still part of the 90s. It
used to cost $ 2 a minute to call Germany, there were cheaper rates for
certain times of the day etc. Now it doesn't matter when you call and even
from the big providers it's only a few Cents a minute, we are talking
about

a 95 or 98% drop in price.

By the way, it does sound as if T-Mobil will be getting the new iPhone in
September which, incidently, will not be called the iPhone 5, at least it
is

extremely unlikely that it will be called iPhone 5.

Here's part of the issue going forward though. Currently AT&T doesn't
force
you to choose one of their shared data plans. However my understanding
from
a area manager of AT&T's is that once the iPhone 5 comes out. They're
going
to adopt the same model VZ has. Meaning that if you want the upgrade
price
on a device. They're going to force you to switch in to 1 of these
shared
data plans. So, unless you wanta either pay full price for your devices
or
buy older 1's off of Ebay, etc. Now, I'm not sure about any of you.
However,
I don't have the money to pay full price for a new iPhone 5 when it
comes
out. So, perhaps none of us will have much of a choice going forward.
Or,
we'll keep using older devices. These are questions we'll have to ask
ourselves. We'll also have to wait & see if they really adopt this model

going henceforth.

Raul,

Where things get incredibly silly is as you increase your data from
perhaps
4Gb to 6Gb the base cost goes down but the per phone charge goes up. So,
the
only way these data plans make sense is for people with lots of devices.

AT&T really did not take into account the families with two or three
phones.
The $70 for unlimited text and voice is not to bad I suppose, although
the
cost for text is so out of line with reality, but hey it is a cash-cow
for
carriers. :)

On Aug 29, 2012, at 11:53 PM, Raul A. Gallegos
wrote:

Hi, basically here's how they work. You get unlimited voice calls and
texts. You pay for a base plan, which doesn't include any phones, but

then

you pay for each phone you add. As an example, if you go with a 4gb

plan

with 3 phones, you would pay $70 for the plan itself and $40 per

phone.

So, do the math. 70 + 120 is 190 plus tax. Now if you take one of

their

older plans like the 700 minute shared minute plan with unlimited text

and

mobile to any mobile and 3 phones, the cost is 60 for the plan, plus

30

for the texting, plus roughly 10 per each phone, plus the data on

those

phones. So, 60 plus 30 plus 30 for 3 phones makes 120. Now add data.

Let's

say 30 per phone for 3gb each. that's an extra 90 making it 210. So

maybe

going with the 4gb plan for those same 3 phones will save you 20.

However

if you have an older plan like the one paying 15 or 20 per month on

data

plans, then switching to the new data shared plan costs more.

Hope this helps.

Take care.

RE: LookTel Recognizer Version 1.2 Released

2012-08-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I agree, David, just because a blind person is simply not capable of taking
an image that is lined up and focused as well as a sighted person this does
not make the app less useful or constitude a "deficit". For LookTel
Recognizer to be at its best the image has to be of the most unique part of
a package and if possible contain no background. I had relatively good
results by taking pictures myself by placing the item on a large white piece
of paper, but I also don't find it a big deal to make a list of items I want
to put into Recognizer and then ask a sighted friend to take the pictures
for me. One can always make this into a bit of a social get-together and I
have long since learned that trying to be independent where it's not really
necessarily at best is time consuming and a pain in the neck and at worst it
reduces one's social skills and interaction with others. LookTel Recognizer
is an awesome tool and for those often used every-day items it's a one-time
setup process which means that as my database grows I will need sighted help
less often.
