The key question is - are you going to be able to cancel this within that 7 day
trial theyoffer?

Offering it is one thing, honouring it is quite another. I presume they have
your card or bank details to play with in the
meantime?

Hello everyone,

I have heard that Sling tv is not accessible. I have heard this more
than once. But I was curious to try it out, because they offer a 7 day
trial.

I had a little bit of a problem getting my account set up on the
website, so I called the phone number. The man I talked to was nice, but
he really did seem rather shocked, when I told him I was totally blind.

I informed him that I tried to sign up on the site, but that it wouldn't
let me submit my information. He told me that this can happen, because
their site gets over-loaded right now, with people trying to sign up. He
said for some reason, it had accepted my password. That was interesting!

So I got all set up, and I went and installed Sling on my Apple tv. I
was hoping it would work, though I had my doubts.

It doesn't work!

I could easily sign in. But once I was signed in, I didn't get any sort
of feedback. So I touched the gesture area, and that got a response.
Sadly, I could see the menu. But anything I tried to enter on, would not
come up.

I really think, and feel that if they would just put some effert in to
this product, it wouldn't be too difficult to make it more accessible. I
mean, I know nothing about making a product accessible. But you can read
the menu.

So how hard can it be?

I decided to install the App for my computer. That experience was worse
than my Apple tv. When I open the program, it's as though there is
nothing there at all. There isn't even a way to sign in.

I just thought I would share my thoughts, and experiences with you all.
Even if many of you already knew all this.

Thank you,

Terri

Yes, going threw the channels with someone sited is very helpful. Should we
have to do it? Of course not, but not everyone makes there apps accessible, so
this is the next best thing. Also, pay attention to the number of channels,
they add and remove some from time to time.

That doesn't sound too bad coming from a spot where the cable box guide
gives us nothing at all to work with because it doesn't talk. At least the
work arounds should be consistent, at least until an update is done. Work is
sort of like that too in one of the main programs I use, except with the
Jaws cursor, the results get inconsistent in that parts get cut off, and
it's usually the option I need. It might do it rarely, and then one day, it
might happen every other call, and I have to get someone to scroll the
screen for me. I like it that with Apple, at least most of the time, you can
always get to everything, or at least a consistent result you can work
around.

Hi Kliphton,

No, it's not the way to have to do it. But if it works for now, then
that's what matters.

I did discover these tabs at one point. I can't remember exactly where I
was when I discovered them. I think I had a channel on. But I couldn't
access those either.

In a way, I feel it's just like cable. I couldn't ever watch anything
on-demand without sighted help, or on pay-per-view. But at least I could
go right to a channel.

Now what is this thing with Direct tv I'm hearing of?

I don't know how to look it up, or I would. But I don't know what to
look for.

Thank you,

Turn off “Audio select speaker in call” if you don’t want the call to

Description is given as: “During audio calls, automatically switch to

I hope a few others write to Apple Accessibility about this because
they should just fix it to make it work as it is intended to work

I looked at this setting in IOS10 and it looks like the choices are
automatic, speaker, or bluetooth headset.

I see no setting to force it to go and stay on the built in earpiece.

Direct TV has a streaming service looks to be coming real soon. They have
released the channel lineup, said they will offer over 100 channels for 35
bucks, and even offer a free appleTV 4 if you commit to 3 months of service.
You can google direct TV now, or go to cordcuttersnews.com

and they have a few articles about it there.

I heard the speculation on Twitter that suggested that DirecTV Now could
come any week now, the articles suggested by the end of November. Another
one I'm watching out for is a newcomer called VidGo, whose selling point
seems to be being able to have the local channels as well. The guy I talked

around, but it either isn't known yet or varies by area.

I tried it, and it is usable depending on how much patients you have, and if
you are willing to try different methods. Watch now wasn’t accessible,
adding favorites wasn’t accessible, but if you go in to watch now, there is
a list of channels from left to right. Now, the channels weren’t read by
voiceover, but I went threw the channels with my sited children, and wrote
down the ones I wanted to remember in a note on my iPhone. After going
threw them a few times, I remember what each one was. So, if I wanted to
watch TBS, I knew it was 14 of 67, if I wanted to watch oxygen, I knew it
was 34 of 67, and if I wanted to watch USA, I knew it was 18 of 67. a
little getting use to, but that method worked for me. I am only using it
until direct TV now launches its service next week, once it does, I am gone!
They will be offering more channels for less. HTH

RE: Sling tv

2016-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Terri and others,

Apparently this access is important to you so why not take up the cause and try
to get Sling TV to make this more accessible. This may of course involve more
than an email via some feedback form or support email, you should find out who
is CEO of this company and a few other high level positions, then write an
actual letter, print it out and mail it via registered mail to Sling TV. This
way the letter needs to be signed for and it will be taken more seriously. Keep
a journal or log of when you send it and if you receive any replies and when,
of course keep copies of all correspondence and if there is no reply try and
take it up with maybe the NFB or whatever other organisations you have, maybe
see if you find an investigative journalist who would champion this. Here in
Canada our CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) has a team called "Go
Public". You can send in information about your issue/fight and if they take it
they'll write an article in the national news, make calls and contact the
involved parties. Recently they had the story of a mother who had bought
accidentl insurance for her child. The girl was now I think 12 or so and
basically lost the use of one eye in a sports accident. The policy stated there
should have been a $50,000 payout, but of course there was fine print which
allowed the insurance company to get out of it (so they thought) and they sent
the mother a cheque for $8.40 to cover gas and milage for trips to the
hospital. A few days after the Go Public article came out there was a follow-up
article saying that hundreds of clients of said insurance company had called in
to cancel their policies, it was all over social media and a few days after
that it was reported that the mother and insurance company had settled, the
amount was not disclosed but the mother said it was a satisfactory result, the
insurance company apologized and said it was their goal to provide the best
possible service and so on and so on.
This goes to show the power of the media and especially social media once
something hits Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is of course a lot of work
and any letter you write must be unfailingly polite, objective and give the
company (Sling TV) a chance to investigate and respond, it is a lot of work,
but depending on what your work is and how much time you have it can produce
real results. If nobody ever did these sorts of things and advocated for
whatever cause or group we wouldn't be where we are now in terms of
accessibility and acceptance of various disabilities and minority groups. I'm
not saying we live in a perfect time, we are far from that, but after all not
that long ago women and black people couldn't even vote let along run for the
office of President of the United States.

Hi Bob, Kliphton, and list,

Yes Bob, I will be able to cancel my subscription. I made sure of this.
Or I mean, trial.
I asked the man on the phone yesterday, that if for some reason I couldn't
cancel online, could I call and cancel. He told me yes there would be no
problem with that, and that I could even email them. So I feel pretty good
about this.

The sad thing is, both people I have dealt with from that company, have been
very nice, and polite. They try to be helpful. But they are ignorant in a lot
of ways. I don't said that to be rude, just speaking the truth.

For instance, when I called last night to see where I could find a listing of
channels, I got a very nice man on the phone. He wanted to be helpful. I told
him that I was blind, and he didn't seemed as shocked as the first guy who had
helped me set up my account.

However, when I told him that I wanted to hopefully find a listing of channels.
He told me this was possible. I asked him where to go and he said, after you
see a few pictures, keep going down a bit, and you will see a link for
channels, and packages. Something like that anyway. I decided to not repeat
that I was blind, and that I wouldn't see the pictures.
I played around with the site, and I did find where I could view the channel
listings. It of course doesn't give you a number. But you can find out what is
available, and what package it is in. I found this all works better with
Firefox, rather than Internet Explorer for some reason.

And Kliphton, Fox is channel 1 on mine as well. I think channel 4, or 5 is Fox
Midwest, as I ended up watching a little bit of a hockey game.
That was cool!

I asked my roommate when he got home last night, if he would go through the
channels with me, and he said yes. So I am excited about this.

2016-11-13 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hi Kliphton,

No, it's not the way to have to do it. But if it works for now, then
that's what matters.

I did discover these tabs at one point. I can't remember exactly where I
was when I discovered them. I think I had a channel on. But I couldn't
access those either.

In a way, I feel it's just like cable. I couldn't ever watch anything
on-demand without sighted help, or on pay-per-view. But at least I could
go right to a channel.

Now what is this thing with Direct tv I'm hearing of?

I don't know how to look it up, or I would. But I don't know what to
look for.

Thank you,

Terri

RE: Speaker Phone Function on IPhone SE , IOS 9

2016-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Don,

I believe you were looking in the wrong place. What you describe is in Settings
> General > Accessibility > Call Audio Routing.
The place where you have to go if you want to disable automatic switching is
Settings > General > Accessibility > Voiceover > Audio (it’s between “Braille”
and “Rotor”.
Turn off “Audio select speaker in call” if you don’t want the call to
automatically switch to speakerphone.
Description is given as: “During audio calls, automatically switch to the
speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear”.
I hope a few others write to Apple Accessibility about this because they should
just fix it to make it work as it is intended to work because for a blind
person it is a nice feature if it works correctly.

Sieghard

Hi Seigart.

I looked at this setting in IOS10 and it looks like the choices are automatic,
speaker, or bluetooth headset.

I see no setting to force it to go and stay on the built in earpiece.

Re: Direct tv Now

2016-11-13 Thread Kliphton Miller
I did see an article that AT will have a save streaming service for there
customers who have direct TV, or cell service. I guess it will give them more
streaming, for less money, I didn’t really read the article, since I have T
mobile, and unlimited everything, the same with my home internet, I have no cap.

Text Messages with Wrong Sender Name,IPhone SE & IOS 9

2016-11-13 Thread Richard
To all that tried to help me with this problem, thank you very much.
I found and corrected the problem!
On my wife's phone, she had my phone number in her own contact info for some
reason,
and since alphabetically her name comes before mine in her contact list,
her phone was recognizing my number associated with her name.
Once she removed my number from her info, the only place for the phone to
find that number was with my name.
Problem solved!
Based on these results, I would say that the phone identifies the incoming
number, then performs an alphabetical search of the contacts list
and places the associated name with the number.
At any rate, thanks to everyone that responded to my original post!
Take care,
Rick

Re: Liner Notes

2016-11-13 Thread Esther
Hi Tom, Richard, and Others,

I listen to a lot of classical music, and these labels typically had/have
extensive liner notes for their CDs. It turns out that for some of these
titles you can download the PDF digital booklets from the label's web site.
Here's an example: I have an old CD recording of Christopher Herrick
playing Back Toccata and Fugues on the organ from a Hyperion recording.
Hyperion is one of the classical record labels that offers PDF digital
booklets for their music. Now, it's easiest if I know the CD of the
recording, which in this case is CDA66434, and type that into the search
box, but in general I may not know that. So, I'll type in something like
"Herrick Bach Toccata and Fugues" and press return on my computer, since
I'd usually do this on my Mac. Then, I'd navigate to "Albums" and find the
two albums listed there. Mine is the second, older one, so I'd select its
web page:
http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDA66434

On the album web page, I'd navigate to the link for "Digital booklet (PDF)"
and download the booklet. There's an AppleScript on the AppleScripts for
iTunes site called PDF Adder:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=pdfadder

This will let me use the same tags to add the PDF booklet to my iTunes
library.

As for why record stores don't provide more digital booklets under iTunes,
read this article:
http://www.mcelhearn.com/why-record-labels-dont-provide-more-digital-booklets-on-the-itunes-store/

Basically, Apple imposes a specific format for digital booklets.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Esther

You need to deactivate the Raise to unlock option, but since my 5S doesn't have
this option, maybe someone with an SE might shed some light?

Re: siriumxm app

2016-11-13 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. It depends. Does your friend want to listen to on demand programming or use
the MySXM feature? If not, Radium is totally accessible with Sirius XM and I
recommend it to everyone.

Yes, unfortunately they'll need to use the native Sirius XM app. Radium doesn't
have this feature as it only does live content.

Re: Sling tv

2016-11-13 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hi Bob, Kliphton, and list,

Yes Bob, I will be able to cancel my subscription. I made sure of this.
Or I mean, trial.
I asked the man on the phone yesterday, that if for some reason I
couldn't cancel online, could I call and cancel. He told me yes there
would be no problem with that, and that I could even email them. So I
feel pretty good about this.

The sad thing is, both people I have dealt with from that company, have
been very nice, and polite. They try to be helpful. But they are
ignorant in a lot of ways. I don't said that to be rude, just speaking
the truth.

For instance, when I called last night to see where I could find a
listing of channels, I got a very nice man on the phone. He wanted to be
helpful. I told him that I was blind, and he didn't seemed as shocked as
the first guy who had helped me set up my account.

However, when I told him that I wanted to hopefully find a listing of
channels. He told me this was possible. I asked him where to go and he
said, after you see a few pictures, keep going down a bit, and you will
see a link for channels, and packages. Something like that anyway. I
decided to not repeat that I was blind, and that I wouldn't see the
pictures.
I played around with the site, and I did find where I could view the
channel listings. It of course doesn't give you a number. But you can
find out what is available, and what package it is in. I found this all
works better with Firefox, rather than Internet Explorer for some reason.

And Kliphton, Fox is channel 1 on mine as well. I think channel 4, or 5
is Fox Midwest, as I ended up watching a little bit of a hockey game.
That was cool!

I asked my roommate when he got home last night, if he would go through
the channels with me, and he said yes. So I am excited about this.

Ok, I decided to play with the Sling TV one more time. I wasn't planning

I had some trouble signing in, which I didn't before. So I found that to
 be a bit odd.

Anyway, I couldn't find a watch now option. I found my tv, on now,
search, settings, and possibly something else. I just can't remember
what it was. But I know for sure it wasn't watch now.

Here is where things get interesting.

I went in to the on now. I slid my finger down, and I was shocked to
hear programs being announced. Now I think I could go left and right as
well. But I don't remember for sure.

It would tell me the name of the show, but not if it was a movie, or a
show. Some of it was obvious. It would tell me the tv rating, the start
time, but unfortunately not the channel. Also, when I entered on an
option, not sure if it was a movie, it did come up. Once it came up, I
learned it was an episode of Nashville.

I just found this interesting, and thought that I would pass this on. I
think I will fiddle around with it a bit more.

I wish the website offered a list of channels. But I don't think they do.

I looked at this setting in IOS10 and it looks like the choices are

I see no setting to force it to go and stay on the built in earpiece.

Is there any way to turn off the speaker phone function on these phones?
It seems that if I don't hold my head or the phone at the right

it
keeps switching .
Personally, I find it very annoying!

Chip, with the latest iTunes, don’t even think about using it for getting MP3
books into Voice Dream. The accessibility of iTunes has gone completely down
the toilet.

There is a way to transfer zip files with iTunes, but it now takes a sighted
person to do it unless you don’t mind a stupidly high number of trials and
errors.

That is my take on it. It used to be super easy with iTunes 11 and prior.

Take care,

Hi Chip,

My favorite way is through DropBox.

Now, if you are using iCloud Drive and iCloud Sync with Voice Dream Reader, be
aware that large audio files take a very long time to sync, so I would not keep
them long in your library.

Also, if you have a book in mp3 format that has lots of chapters that are
separate files, you want to first make sure they are labeled so they will play
in order, then zip them into a zip file and name the zip file with the name of
the book.

Then, put that zip file on Dropbox, for example, and then add it to Voice Dream
from within Voice Dream.

Then, Voice Dream will treat it as a book with each file being a chapter.

It is quite slick.

HTH,

Richard

  HI.

i’m having some issues with voice dream reader.

I am running a 6 s with the latest iOS update.

Sometimes when I launch voice dream reader, I get a message saying that
iCloud isn’t available. Not sure if this is a connection issue. Nothing will
play after dismissing the message, until I reboot my phone.

The more annoying problem though, is this.
I have an audio book which has 4 parts to it. Each part is about 4 hours
long. I’m fine if I play the file straight through, but about an hour before a
part of the book is about to end, , If I try to rewind or fast forward I end
up at odd places in the book. It’s almost like at certain parts of the file,
the rewind and fast forward act like I’m skipping by an hour or something. If
I skip forward too far, I end up at the next part of the book. It also doesn’t
tend to keep my place when it’s at , the particular spot where i’m having
problems. I really love this app, but have had to resort to using downcast, as
if the book is paused at problem spots, it jumps back or forward to the next
part, and it’s impossible to rewind or forward to find where I was up to. I
was just wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues with audio
books, before I write to the developer.

  thanks

Re: Sling tv

2016-11-13 Thread Terri Stimmel
Well, I didn't know that. This is good to know. Although, I think dish network
is less accessible than DirecTV. But I could be wrong about this. I had DirecTV
for a while, several years back. But I've never had dish TV.
So anyone's input on how accessible ditch is, would be good to know. That might
tell us a lot as to what to do concerning sling TV, if we do anything.

Direct tv Now

2016-11-13 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello Kliphton, and list,

I decided to call Direct tv, just to see if they could tell me anything.

Of course, as I expected, the lady tried to sale me internet service,
and the actual satilite service, saying that I could use their streaming
App. I told her that I didn't want that, but I appreciated the offer.

She even told me that if I couldn't have a satilite where I lived, that
I could have it installed at another address. That was an interesting
thing to learn, I must admit. I didn't think you could do such a thing.

But I told her that I don't have friends who would do that. LOL!

Anyway, she knew nothing about the Direct tv now service. Well she knew
of it after she put me on a short hold. But she had absolutely no
information on it, and she had know idea as to when it was being released.

She told me to just watch their website, or call them. Well, ok.

I did find an article posted a couple of days ago. I honestly can't
remember where I found it now. It mentioned the Direct tv Now service
was supposed to be released later this week.

However, apparently the FCC has some concerns. They are concerned that
people who have this service will be offered unlimited streaming from A
T and T, but will be billed for other streaming services, or not have
unlimited data.

So I guess this will have to be worked out some how. No telling how long
that might take.

I just thought anyone interested, might like to know.

Re: Sprinkler Controller App

2016-11-13 Thread Mary Otten
If a device relies on IFT TT, it should work with Alexa as well as it works
with Google home. If you have an Alexa enabled device, you don't need to
purchase a Google home. I don't know anything about any Apple HomeKit enabled
sprinkler controllers, since that isn't something I need and haven't looked
into. Just remember that Google home is very new on the market, so if you
already have something such as an echo or an Apple device, you should check
into it and not just go buy a device you may not need for this purpose.

RE: Sprinkler Controller App

2016-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Kevin is flogging Google stuff as usual, I believe he is referring to something
he set up with the Google Home Speaker (Google's version of the Amazon Echo)
and he is using IFTTT to control it.
I'm sure there are also home kit capable controllers and apps for this which
will work with your iOS device.
Sorry if I am not researching this further, from now until March any sprinkler
where I live would at best produce ice cubes and even in July and August I
rarely need to water the lawn, it can get to be in the 90's here as well, but
then again if I don't water it I won't have to cut the grass as often *smile*.

Sieghard

I've Rachio linked with Google

I've it configured, so I'm able to start/stop sprinklers using my voice (e.g.
start/turn on zone #) will start a specified zone for 10 mins. Stop the water
will stop any sprinkler currently running. Not only has this made the
sprinklers have smart controls that are accessible, but it has resulted in a

RE: Sprinkler Controller App

2016-11-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As per the Amazon description it does work with Amazon Echo as well as Nest
(which basically means Google) and some other major platforms.
I still believe Home Kit will be a major player in the home automation category
and that we'll see a lot more devices in the months and years to come.

Hi Pamela,

OK, so I am naturally curious about tech gadgets and I looked up Rachio. I
guess I owe Kevin a bit of an apology since it doesn't seem to be totally a
Google gadget, but we all know Kevin is a Google Guy *smile*.
Rachio does have an iOS app, but it does not support Home Kit. Here is some
information from the description on Amazon.com:

• Connect with top smart home platforms. Extend your smart home out into the
yard. Rachio directly integrates with the best connected home platforms (Amazon
Echo / Dot, IFTTT, Nest, and more), so you have more options and more control.
• Easy installation. Replace your current controller in 30 minutes or less.
Works with any sprinkler system, no special tools or expertise required.
Connects
with your home Wi-Fi.

It does get good ratings and while I don't know what is expensive, this doesn't
sound too expensive to me at $195 for an 8-zone controller and $230 for a
16-zone controller.
Of course I have no idea as to whether the iOS app is accessible or not.

Here is a good review of this controller from an Apple perspective, it
basically mentions a number of Pros and only 2 Cons, lack of 5 Ghz support and
lack of Home Kit support:
http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/06/28/review-rachios-iphone-connected-smart-sprinkler-controller-is-efficient-easy-to-use

If you Google "Home Kit enabled sprinkler controller" you'll find some other
options which are probably worthwhile checking out.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Accessible Apps for buying, saling, or even looking for housing?

Hello everyone,

I usually use Craigslist on my laptop, if I want to sale something locally, or
if I want to purchase something. I have even found apartments this way.

I guess it's been a week since I last went to the site. I went there about an
hour ago, as I would like to find another apartment.

However, the site was strange, and didn't make sense. When I went to view
apartments, I saw all these numbers, instead of links that said 1 bedroom
apartment, and so on. I tried to enter on one of the links. But from what I
could tell, nothing happened. So I am not sure what is going on.

I tell you all this long story for a reason.

Is there an app for Craigslist, that works with the Iphone, or Ipad?

How accessible might it be?

Also, if there isn't an App for Craigslist, are there other accessible Apps
that offer apartment, or roommate listings, as well as other things. Such as
computer stuff, and the like?

I have a sighted friend who uses offer-up, though I know this doesn't have a
housing section.

I tried this on my Iphone a couple of months ago, and unfortunately it didn't
seem accessible at all.

I mainly want a site that will offer a range of housing options, but
more with private landlords. I don't like big management companies.
That's a personal choice.

If anyone has any ideas for me, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you,

Terri

The posting/reposting could be a bit more streamlined, but that's probably

I tried this on my Iphone a couple of months ago, and unfortunately it didn't
seem accessible at all.

I mainly want a site that will offer a range of housing options, but
more with private landlords. I don't like big management companies.
That's a personal choice.

If anyone has any ideas for me, I would really appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you,

Terri
