Yes you can with a hack
Setup USER MODE to Auto Start on a different port :-) per user.

You must be doing a switch user instead of a logout :-)

check his ip address at

you can use something like dyndns.com software to monitor changing

Re: Run Multiple VNC Services on One Windows XP Machine

2008-03-25 Thread steve menard

you can run multiple vnc sessions
but they will show the same display screen

vnc shows windows terminal display 0

which is why there is a problem with fast-user-switching
if I log in as user1 then do a logoutswitch user
session 0 is still in use by user1

if a second user2 logs in and is active a problem occurs

when you vnc to the station it connects to session 0
logging the second user out of their session
and the vnc session will go back to the login screen

now you could set up user mode server for each user to access that
logged in users session

of course on a different port to not knock out that user2 session

but I do not believe each user can be logged in at the same time
please test and report your findings :-)

it would just be dropped right now

follow the instructions to forward the request from the hub/router

don't forget your windows firewall need to have an exception
depending on your virus or firewall software they may need adjustments too

When I run www.whatismyip.com from any pc at home, I get the same exact IP, which is the

There is a huge difference between vnc and rdp on msWindows:
RDP can give you a new desktop for each connection. The number of those
desktops is limited by license.

For what its worth, rdp can also connect to the existing destkop, where
it consumes an rdp license. Hence I have the feeling the rdp licenses is
(also) restricted by the number of connections.

VNC on msWindows gives access to an existing desktop. By default the
number of vnc connections is limited for security reasons. This is
configurable to a shared desktop, see the vnc server properties on the
deskop at hand for details.

For what its worth, vnc can also connect to running rdp sessions,
provided a vncserver is running in there (start the
user-mode-vnc-server) and there is no port conflict between multiple vnc
sessions: they all default to port 5900. Better to switch the vnc-server
in an rdp session to a higher port (5901, 5902 and so on).

Hi Group

Im trying to get this RealVNC working, infact Im trying to get any kind of
remote desktop connection working. Nothing seems to be connecting and I cant
understand why. Im not any kind of network king but Ill have a go.

I really just want to confirm that Im going the right way around setting this
network up for RealVNC.

First of all Im sure anyone who's read my previous questions will understand
that I have a network of three computers and one setup as a kind of server. I
say 'kind of server' because it isnt really a server it just simply is XP Pro
with a network card and shared drives and Ive allowed my other two computers
through on the internal network to remote desktop to it.

Since Ive had advice from various people on here on how I might get this thing
working Ive managed to get my ISP to assign me a static IP address which will
make things a little easier to setup. Ive also installed IIS because
everything was pointing that way to setup a VPN although I cant get that
working either. I was wondering if RealVPN requires this VPN Tunnel connection
to be connected before it will work? Can someone confirm that for me?

Im also a little uncertain about having 2 DHCP servers on my network. The
first being a Voyager 205 modem which connects to my ADSL and the second a
D-LINK 625 router which has wireless capabilities needed to connect one of my
computers on the network. I remember having problems if I turn one off acting
as a DHCP as the router of the modem wouldnt work. With this setup is it ok to
have them both acting as DHCP or will that cause problems for RealVNC. The
modem seems to asign my modem with a basic internal IP and then the router
assigns my computers on the network the internal IP's Ive requested of it ie
192.168.0.150 ...151...152.

I seem to have to reflect a port forwarding on both my modem and router so if
the modem port forwarded the request for say port 48620 to internal port 48620
on IP 192.168.0.151 (which is the PC I want to connect to acting as a basic
server) I would also need to reflect this on my router aswel. Modem referes to
this as NAT table and the router referes to it as vurtal server. I take it
these are the same (port forwarding)?

I can successfully use Windows RDC, VPN, and RealVNC internally so I know it
is setup right. I just need to understand why I cant communicate with my PC
over the internet from my g/f's PC at her place. Everything I try comes up as
unable to connect. I can ping my IP address from her PC but connecting is a
different story.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how I go about getting this to work.

Thanks
James

I have observed that it does not really matter
sometimes a few characters will cause vnc down .. sometimes not;
sometimes large copies work fine

I have found that the clipboard issue is the primary disconnect cause I see

I observe VNC monitoring clipboard causes disconnects
when clipboard contents change ;
if I re-connect I can then use existing clipboard contents

have copied and pasted many items [text mainly]
I have not maintained log to correlate vnc disconnects

You have fastuserswitching enabled
free vnc is not compatible with fastuserswitching

only the firstlogged in user can connect to the desktop

if you can logg in as the first user you can then loggoff that user
and then log in as the user you want

Sounds like you'll need to setup a static IP for the linksys like
192.168.0.60 192.168.0.linksysWANip

Setup the LAN of linksys uses a different range for LAN like 192.168.1.1

try not to use the same range for the linksys as the comcast modem has
linksys may use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 slips my mind right now

Portforward incoming through Comcast to linksys
port 5900 - 192.168.0.linksysWANip

which linksys then will forward to desktop
Sounds like you'll need to setup a static IP for the Desktop 192.168.1.100
Portforward incoming through linksys to Desktop
port 5900 - 192.168.1.100

Its easy enough to do; have it on a few of my double triple firewall systems

comcats uses 192.168.0.1 for internal gateway
Setup the WAN of linksys uses a Static IP 192.168.0.50
[192.168.0.linksysWANip]

dyndns has a configuration to not use certain external ip numbers or ranges
ensure both internals are in the don't use list

;-)

does your desktop have a static IP or does it get a dynamic private IP

Symantec Anti virus definitely Blocks
VNC check your rules if it has the personal firewall enabled

sounds like your desktop PC May have a different private address inside
and your linksys
is not forwarding to the desktop system's IP

Especially since you can connect from inside
I am ASSUMING you re using the private address Since you don't say that

my laptop works with no problems.

or the public address that you can find from a site something like

This kind of address is the one that I am having trouble of connecting to.
My IP address is static... it gets another IP address only when I turnoff my COMCAST Cable and my Router, then It will get a new IP address, but I do that very seldom (Maybe once or 2 every 6 months)

Re: How user change password

2008-02-14 Thread steve menard

This user does not have administrator rights
they _could_ run and configure the UserMode server
[be sure to use a different port than 5900/5800]
they can then define their own password and port
the appropriate firewall adjustments would then be necessary

Sometimes the mouse seems to be flying under some windows. Usually the only
way I can then activate the functions of that window is to ALT-TAB to the
process, then use TAB, SPACEBAR combinations to press the buttons.

Particularly I noticed this on Zonealarm and now I'm seeing it with Kaspersky.
With Zonealarm the alt-tab process works fine, but with kaspersky it's like it
is invisible to the remote session. I can open other windows on the desktop
and the mouse works fine. I have no connection problems or anything else that
would suggest that this is connection related. I'm wondering if the
application is somehow trying to make itself invisible to some applications
(virus, VNC) to protect itself.

Does this happen to anyone else, and have you found a way around it?

Thanks.

My question/problem is this:

I have two PCs at home I am doing my testing on. I have setup VNC
Enterprise (trial version) on both machines. I have also set up a dynamic
DNS via www.dyndns.org.

On my laptop I have set up the VNC server and when I hover over the icon on
the toolbar it says 192.168.0.3 which is obviously my internal IP address.
I can connect from my desktop using the VNC viewer and entering 192.168.0.3.
However, if I type in my dynamic DNS e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED] I cannot
connect to my laptop. Is this because both of the PCs are behind my router
a Netgear DG834G Version 3. I am sure I have opened the necessary ports
5900 and 5800 (also 5950 and 5850 which is how I set up the server on my
laptop).

Any advise would be really appreciated. This seems an amazing product,

especially for the cost, and means I don't have to upgrade my friends PCs to
XP Pro J

Re: VNC viewer and Listening VNC Viewer ??

2008-02-08 Thread steve menard

VNCVIEWER is is used outgoing to connect to another system running a server
used when the ports are setup so you can directly connect to the system
you want to watch or control

listening VNCVIEWER Accepts incoming connections
used when a firewall or something else is blocking your connection;
the system you will watch or control will call back to your listening
viewer on port 5500

you need to ensure firewalls are setup to allow the ports ;

typically listening viewer is when I can't adjust the remote system
firewalls

assuming Windows
ensure Windows firewall has port and/or application in the exception list
also ensure the Anti-virus software you use is not blocking it either
If additional firewall is used like comodo or zone alarm create the
appropriate rules as well

I would think there are two things

a) you are hitting th real X11 server at port 6000

more importantly
b) when you ask for port 100
you will hit the java viewer of 0

you MUST jump by 300 as Wez said

for each port count 2 separated by 100 so
:0 is 5800 5900
:99 is 5899 5999
:100 is 5900 6000 CONFLICT with java :0
:199 is 5999 6999 CONFLICT with vnc5999 :99
:200 is 6000 6100 CONFLICT with X11 6000

100 Viewports will cover 200 java and direct ports
only a single display can be on a listening port with the free version
[although you can have many computers viewing the same screen -display

YesJava Port is 100 less than VNC Port both are required free:

when you use port :0 it is BOTH 5800 5900
when you use port :10 it is BOTH 5810 5910

The next range available is java viewer starting at :6300 so viewer is

THIS IS NOT CODED FOR in the wrapper you see ; it goes only to 99

300 ports apart, e.g. 1..99,300..399,600..699 and so on. Scanning
straight
through from 1..1000 should work, but will waste time scanning ranges
that

Re: JAVA and VNC ports..

2008-01-25 Thread steve menard

Free RealVNC Serves up a http page using Java from port :5800
so that someone with a web browser can follow a link
or you can send it in an email to someone

that way the user does not require vncviewer to be installed on their system

The http / java then redirects the request [using a Java viewer]

to port :5900

or you can use vncviewer to get to the viewer directly at x.x.x.x:5900

Java viewewer is always 100 less than the view port [for the FREE Version]
Please note that all of this information is available at the

when you use port :300 it is BOTH 6100 6200 [so no conflit with 6000]
when you use port :310 it is BOTH 6110 6210
when you use port :399 it is BOTH 6199 6299 [ next port conflict
with 6200 ]

300 ports apart, e.g. 1..99,300..399,600..699 and so on. Scanning
straight
through from 1..1000 should work, but will waste time scanning ranges
that
cannot be used because of port clashes.

2. Upgrade dialog for AVG (I think)
3. ZoneAlarm warning dialog.

Also my daughter has a fancy mouse setup.

I have pointer events active.

I can click on the family safety signin dialog and access all its controls,
but I CANNOT select check box and allow button on ZoneAlarm warning
(although the Allow button does change shade as expected when I hover), also
I CANNOT select the AVG update dialog or any of its controls.

Neither of these two windows will come to the foreground even just clicking
on the tite bar. BUT if I go to my daughters machine it all works fine.

Are some dialogs/windows blocked from VNC or is there some kind of always on
top issue here, or what?

I spent a while searching the archive, but obviously I have the wrong search
string or this is a new problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

If I wait a while I can one again connect and see the desktop. The longer I

little while later the problem resurfaces.

I have one other problem related to that server which might be related to this
problem and MIGHT have to do something with a buffer overflow on the NIC or
something like that however... so far we have not been able to test that due
to the fact that I would not know how.

Something is going on and I'd like to get a handle on it. What does VNC do
different after showing the desktop from what it does when just showing the
login screen of the screensaver screen? Maybe that will give us some insight
to where the cause is and what the sollution might be.

Yes it is a problem with fast user switching
I work around that limitation by setting up usermode servers to run at
login
the biggest problem is A first user to login to the system becomes user

B the user second to log in typically can't do it remotely ;-(
C if the local users are logging in and being viewed by someone else if
the remote user trys the system account they KNOCK OFF the current user

Also, Ive tried accessing 1.1.1.1::5900 (pretending 1.1.1.1 is the address

 Hello everyone,

We have a machine where we found that RealVNC and UltraVNC
were both installed on it. We noticed that whenever we tried
to VNC into this machine, it would crash. I was wondering if
anyone knew of an issue with UltraVNC and RealVNC having
problems communicating between each other or if they are not
compatible to run on the same machine. I have removed
UltraVNC from the machine for the time being seeing as we do
not need to do file sharing. Any information would be great!

Re: ver 4.1.2 - connection problem (WinXP to Vista)

2007-11-19 Thread steve menard
Hi Linda
please Check the FAQs

VISTA Support much better with enterprise or personal
not free version [difficulty with Vista security issues]

although some compatibility available with VNCfree version when
NOT using vncFree servicemode but using vncfree usermode instead

note: Wez response below

Vista has some kludges to try to workaround the inherent security flaws in
Win32's window messaging system, which unfortunately break the -connect
feature of VNC 3 VNC 4 Free Edition servers.

VNC Personal Enterprise Edition servers use a new mechanism that isn't
affected by this aspect of Vista's design.

OK, back to your problem. VNC 4.1.2 free edition, as far as I know,
doesn't work well in service mode. Seems like it's working better in user
space (not a problem of session as you thought, but of space). I've just
tried to do what you want and succeeded. Here's what to do:
1. Stop and unregistered service mode of VNC server.
2. Run VNC server in user mode but without administrator right. That means
simple click on Run VNC Server inside VNC Server (User-Mode) is
sufficient.
3. Now, you could do
c:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\winvnc4.exe -connect your viewer PC

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have method that fits my needs that works
on WinXP and I am trying to make it work on VISTA.

Currently I have clients that are behind firewalls and I am not allowed to
contact them directly. I have another service that checks with me and finds
out that I want to make a connection. I put VNC on my end in listen mode
and the service on the client does c:\program files\.\winvnc.exe
-connect myIP to tell the WinVNC service on the client end to make the
connection. This works under WinXP.

On VISTA, with the session 0 isolation, when my service executes c:\program
files\.\winvnc.exe -connect myIP I think that there is an error and
the WinVNC service can not be found because it is in another session and can
not be seen by my service.

I think that on VISTA there is some way that I can communicate with the
WinVNC service from a different session, because with WinVNC4 running as a
service on VISTA the WinVNC SysTray tool can pass a message to the WinVNC
service to tell it to initiate a connection.
