Re: [WSG] google chrome frame
Tee, IE6 is out there. Heck, IE5 is still out there (I made the decision to ignore IE5 already). How you deal with IE6 (or not) is up to you. Personally, I still have to check IE6 and at least make sure my layouts are working properly. I try to do little things like limiting my use of .png files to a minimum so things don't look too ugly. IE6 is around, but it's old enough that I only go so far to make their experience match that of a modern browser. I'd love to ignore IE6 too, but real people without a choice are using it in the workplace everyday. A couple of my clients have an office full of Windows 2000 workstations. The Chrome frame you mention can't be expected to be widely adopted on systems where the users can't even install anything period. They probably use Chrome at home though. Joseph R. B. One of the UK high street banks who has tens of thousands of users recently advised me that they will be retaining IE6 as the default browser until 2014 due to the huge amount of work required to fix the large number of bespoke applications they use. Staff can ask for special dispensation to get IE7 installed but if you've ever tried to get a corporate IT department to do anything you'll understand that very few people will bother asking. I think that techies forget the concerns that ordinary people have about technology. Older users in particular are often reluctant to install or change anything because they don't know what they can trust and they are scared something will break. Unlike us, they don't have the knowledge or facilities to fix anything that goes wrong. I suspect that the kind of websites that ordinary people use will still be seeing significant IE6 traffic (probably in excess of 10%) for a couple more years. The stats for techie sites will be very different, so a decision on whether to support IE6 will depend on the demographics of the visitors. RE: [WSG] google chrome frame
I've spent the last 12 months working on the one of the largest sites in Australia. Over this time we have updated our browser support matrix twice, and will probably update it again soon. For us, IE6 usage is starting to hit a rapid decline, falling at about 1 percentage point a week. The last 3 weeks have been 8.75%, 7.60% and now 6.25%. Considering Chrome is currently unsupported but at 4.57% (and growing), I expect our next update will be to drop IE6 support in favour of adding Chrome support. That being said, the whole site is based on progressive enhancement so it already works in Chrome and we even have a small but consistent set of users browsing on their PS3s. Nevertheless, the decision of which browsers you support (and to what degree you support them) needs to be something that you evaluate and decide yourself using your own market metrics. Anybody who tells you what you should and should not support is most likely an idiot and probably not a very good business person. [WSG] google chrome on windows 98?
Anybody knows if Google Chrome can run on Windows 98 and W2K? Google is aggressively promoting google chrome, I see it puts a big icon for ie6 on google page. A few of my clients have visitors from South Africa and a few Eastern Europe countries, the IE6 user is higher (over 30%), even my site which attracts people from many countries and the IE6 stat has jumped up (use to be like 10% but now is 20 - 25%) despite that I have a 'you are seeing this message because you use IE6' message. This is very depressing as it indicates that this browser still isn't going to die by the end of 2009. So I am really curious if Google Chrome can help speed up the death of IE6. tee *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: memberh...@webstandardsgroup.org ***

Yes, IE6, and most users are not given admin authority over their systems to install/upgrade software. I know Microsoft has been very good about building a number of user-friendly features into Windows, like the on-screen keyboard and OS-level magnifying tool, but I thought that all the screen readers and similar assistive devices were developed by third parties. Hi Christian, Just clear up my understanding, folks; is Internet Explorer accessible because Microsoft builds the accessibility features The short answer is yes Details of the accessibility of internet Explorer can be found in the VPAT (voluntary product accessibility template) supplied by Microsoft: (http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/2/3/c23bc250-5f80-4d0c-a29d-877355ff91e8/IE7_VPAT%20version%201%200.doc) - word doc and the VPAT for Firefox 3 is available here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/vpat-3.html I have reproduced the relevant VPAT info for Internet Explorer 7 below: Section 1194.21 Software Applications and Operating Systems - Detail Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (a) When software is designed to run on a system that has a keyboard, product functions shall be executable from a keyboard where the function itself or the result of performing a function can be discerned textually. Supported with Exceptions: Windows Internet Explorer 7 supports all standard keyboard features of the user interface. Windows Internet Explorer 7 provides Help functionality that includes easily accessible reference guides for keyboard shortcuts. In addition, documentation on Keyboard Shortcut keys are available online: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/fe192a3f-1401-4233-919e-cae97eca4c0c1033.mspx More documents on this subject can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/keyboard.aspx Windows Internet Explorer 7 provides a new user interface; keyboard users can use the Alt key to activate the classical menu. Exceptions: Windows Internet Explorer 7 browser arbitrary text content cannot be selected by the keyboard. Text can be selected by using a mouse or other pointing device. Windows Internet Explorer 7 supports all standard keyboard operation of the user interface. Java and in-page plug-ins for content such as Flash cannot be used with the keyboard so they must not be installed for keyboard-only users. The tab order skips over in-page objects completely, so form controls within them cannot be used without a mouse. (b) Applications shall not disrupt or disable activated features of other products that are identified as accessibility features, where those features are developed and documented according to industry standards. Applications also shall not disrupt or disable activated features of any operating system that are identified as accessibility features where the application programming interface for those accessibility features has been documented by the manufacturer of the operating system and is available to the product developer. Supported with Exceptions: Windows Internet Explorer 7 supports system StickyKeys, FilterKeys, MouseKeys, SerialKeys and ToggleKeys. Exceptions: Windows Internet Explorer 7 does not use the cursor width from the system setting. (c) A well-defined on-screen indication of the current focus shall be provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that Assistive Technology can track focus and focus changes. Supported with Exceptions: Windows Internet Explorer 7 uses programming interfaces to expose the location of the focus indicator and Microsoft Active Accessibility(R) to expose its interface elements to assistive technologies. Microsoft Active Accessibility is a COM-based technology that improves the way accessibility aids work with applications running on the Microsoft Windows operating systems. It provides dynamic-link libraries that are incorporated into the operating system, as well as a COM interface and application programming elements that provide reliable methods for exposing information about user interface elements. Exceptions: The caret indication is neither visible nor programmatically exposed in read-only fields. (d) Sufficient information about a user interface element including the identity, operation and state of the element shall be available to Assistive Technology. When an image represents a program element, the information conveyed by the image must also be available in text. Supported: Windows Internet Explorer 7 user interface elements are exposed programmatically through native object models and programming interfaces such as Microsoft Active Accessibility. Standard Windows controls and interface elements automatically expose this information through Microsoft Active Accessibility. Labels are associated with controls, objects, icons and images in Internet Explorer user interface. (e) When bitmap images are used to identify controls, status indicators, or other programmatic elements, the meaning assigned to those images shall be consistent throughout an application's performance. It does support -webkit-border-radius, as far as I know (I'm running on Mac and parallels doesn't work on my 64-bit Vista, and I can't be bothered to do the few hours re-install process of Vista) -webkit-border-radius renders just fine. Running Chrome on XP on VMWare Fusion. http://www.css3.info/preview/rounded-border/ Without WebKit's anti-aliasing as far as I can tell from Twitter posts. I'm wondering if this is due to webkit using platform specific code for things like this and text-shadow, as being a reason why they are not in Chrome (Safari on Windows has a compatibility layer), or if it is a older branch. I'm thinking more the former. Could someone tell me if it has Google Download Accelerator or other Google Toolbar features built in? I believe it's a know bug, a missing feature. It's something David Pogue mentioned in his column on the Chrome releasehttp://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/technology/personaltech/03pogue.html, his most recent column: At the moment, for example, there's no way to e-mail a Web page to someone, no full-screen mode, no way to magnify the page (rather than just the text), and no bookmarks organizing screen. Google says that these features are at the top of its to-do list. One thing I have noticed today is that it creates 3 different processes in the Task Manager to run one coyp of chrome. I have tested this several times with the Task Manager open and everytime I open the browser, I add three processes all named chrome. They vary from 5mb to 44mb of memory usage. Accessibility can't just be bolted on afterwards - it needs to be designed in from the start. The fact that the application cannot be used with just a keyboard is criminally negligent - that's a fundamental requirement of any application. The simplicity of the UI means it should have been really easy, and the fact that the application is device-dependent suggests that accessibility isn't on their radar at all. The fact that keyboard-only users, screen reader users and others cannot use the browser at all means that they are entirely excluded from the beta phase, so it seems they will not be able to provide feedback until it goes gold, if it ever does. Christian, No it doesn't come with Google toolbar. I'm not sure if Google Accelerator is built in without the user knowing but it did load the Acid 2 test really fast (and passed it). I did a review if anyone wants to read it. I wondered the same thing about the Google toolbar and am hoping they provide the ability for addons like firefox. (eg the del.icio.us extension!). http://aldonasweblounge.net/blog/?p=90 IceKat PS- Thanks to those who replied for my image display float issue. Display block-inline worked great but not in IE (darn ie) so I'm still thinking. Inline worked if I didn't want a border around the image and caption so thanks to those who helped me out. :) Christian Montoya wrote: Could someone tell me if it has Google Download Accelerator or other Google Toolbar features built in? RE: [WSG] Google chrome... Accessibility coming very soon???
Yes, this is the case. There has been a lot of talk about this in GAWDS, and Steve Faulkner has written about it at http://www.paciellogroup.com/blog/?p=92. Basically it looks like there's no MSAA support. If they don't address this, many large organisations (at least in the UK) will not use it. I imagine that such organisations are exactly the people Google are expecting to build applications using Chrome, so hopefully this will be addressed at some point, ideally before it comes out of beta. Does it support border-radius or -webkit-radius? no browsers support border-radius. Interesting to read the many comments on this. It's utilising Webkit as a rendering engine (also behind Safari and Konquerer 4), which is BSD and LGPL licensed. In turn Google say they are licensing Chrome as Open Source, meaning depending on the actual license, items like V8 (http://blogoscoped.com/google- chrome/17) other bits (http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/38) can be utilised in other browsers. Google Chrome wasn't working for me in the office either, but I think its all due to the firewall and proxy that we have setup here. It couldn't seem to negotiate between the proxy and the installer. I just hooked it up to an outside ADSL connection (my work PC that is), and typing this Email through Chrome right now :) Its a brilliant browser, a true innovation to the way we use the web. Loads for a while then nothing, just a blank white page. Again, only Google services, so kind of epic fail. You can grab the source from : http://code.google.com/chromium/ http://dev.chromium.org/Home and try to build it if you want .. According to the site, it won't (yet) build fully on Mac or Linux (http://dev.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/build-instructions-linux) but I'm sure it'll happen soon with enough contributions. Question: does Chrome actually record your browsing and send that information back to Google or are people just freaking over nothing? If they don't have that functionality built in to chrome yet, they certainly have written themselves a license to built that in whenever they want to.
