Hi all,
The LE CONTE'S SPARROW that John Drummond and others saw yesterday, was still
present at Upper Twin Pond, at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area), in Pueblo County,
this morning. So far, this little marsh, is the only place a Le Conte's
Sparrow has been found in Pueblo County (both last fall a

I heard, then saw, and then photographed a likely PACIFIC WREN in Pueblo

flock of other birds, west of Valco Ponds parking lot. There is a road that
follows the telephone poles, it was near where another road heads of

this major Colorado rarity. Luckily I've found two of them in SE Colorado in
the 90s.

Hi all,
I birded Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) today.
The Pueblo County side was slow, a few Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned
Warblers, also Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a Marsh Wren at the Headquarters and
Rose Pond.
The El Paso Coutny side was better, my highlights follow.

Since it seems to be no shortage of either of these vireos this fall in
Colorado, I hope people will submit documentation to the CBRC for each
sighting. Maybe these two species will be removed from the CBRC Review list at
some point, if all of them are documented. Both of them seem to be regul

the Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam, east to the Pueblo Nature
Center in Pueblo, Pueblo County.

Pueblo Mountain Park entrance in Beulah, where the gate was closed, and the
sign saying closed for the day do to drought conditions. There is a fire
burning in the Wet Mountains, about 5 miles North of Beulah, s

Two adult Acorn Woodpeckers continue in the big dead tree at the Horseshoe
Lodge Parking lot in Pueblo Mountain Park, above Beulah. The woodpeckers are
taking food into a nest hole, though so far the baby woodpeckers haven't
fledged. There were at least two singing male Grace's
Mark Peterson and I did some birding and dragonfly looking in Southeastern
Colorado today, from the Kansas border, east of Holly in Prowers County, west
through Kiowa, Bent, Otero, and Crowley Counties.
The best birds of the day were at Lake Holbrook, Otero County, near Rocky Ford.

There is a breeding plumaged Red-necked Stint, first state record for Kansas at
the Little Salt Marsh at Quivira NWR in central Kansas. The bird was just seen
this morning, so it is currently there (July 2nd, 8am Central Time). This is
the right month to be looking for this species in Colora
Lisa Edwards and I did a little chase trip this morning. We went to Pueblo
Mountain Park in Beulah, Pueblo County, first, and found one Acorn Woodpecker
and one singing male Grace's Warbler.
Then we headed back to Pueblo and headed east on Hwy 50 to Rocky Ford in Otero
County, and on Hwy 266 w
This information is from David Charter, after the Reddish Egret flew west from
Lake Cheraw this morning.
"There actually is an isolated pond on the west side of the highway 109. It
probably went down in there, but I can't see it from the road. The pond can
be seen a little bit from highway 2
David Chartier called just now (732am), he saw the dark morph sub-adult Reddish
Egret on the east side of Hwy 109 at Lake Cheraw, Otero County. Then it just
flew (735am) 1/4 mile west and landed in a field. Lake Cheraw is north of La
Junta. The usual Snowy Plovers and Black-necked Stilts, tha
There appears to be a dark morph Reddish Egret at Lake Cheraw today. This
sighting was submitted to e-bird by people I don't know, with a good photo.
Since this is a Colorado Review Species, hopefully the observers submit the
photo and details to the CBRC. If there are any birders around out
Van Truan and I saw the two Acorn Woodpeckers at the usual tree in Pueblo
Mountain Park, at the parking lot just west of the Horseshore Lodge in Beulah,
Pueblo County this morning from 630-830am. They seemed to chasing around any
other woodpeckers that come to visit the tree, a Hairy Woodpecker

I found a singing male Blackpoll Warbler and a singing male Northern Parula at
the banding station (fee area) at Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso County this
morning. Also, male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were there as well.

Six birders (4 from Colorado Springs and 2 from Pueblo) walked along the Canon
City Riverwalk in Canon City this morning, during an Arkansas Valley Audubon
field trip. We walked from Raynolds Ave. west to Sell Ave. and back, our
highlights were a singing FIELD SPARROW and a singing WHI
Gene Rutherford and I did some night time birding late yesterday and early this
morning.
Up in the Wet Mountains, near Beulah, we heard 6 Flammulated Owls, 6 Common
Poorwills, 1 or 2 Long-eared Owls. These were heard on 4/27 (after 10pm). We
didn't hear or see any Northern Saw-whet Owls, whic
I walked Rock Canyon, below Pueblo Reservoir dam early this morning. The
highlights for me were my first of the spring Cassin's Kingbirds, Yellow
Warblers, and a Warbling Vireo all singing (these all breed here usually). The
only migrant warblers were a few singing Yellow-rumpeds and a coupl
Van Truan checked the trees at Ordway Reservoir, just north of Ordway today,
and saw a Northern Parula. The trees here seem to be a spot that interesting
migrants sometimes show up.

At about 730am I found a singing male Worm-eating Warbler along the Frisbee
Golf Course Creek in Pueblo City Park. This is on the west side of the park.
I went to the Park, thinking I'd run into the DFO Group, though never did. I
called several local birders, who came and were able to see the

The Arkansas Valley Audubon field trip at the Pueblo Nature Center in Pueblo,
this morning, saw the wintering male Northern Cardinal and two White-throated
Sparrows west of the Nature Center and a Black Phoebe just east of the Nature
Center.

I spent all morning birding east and west of the Pueblo Nature Center, along
the Arkansas River. Nearly 50 species of birds were present. Highlights

Five birders in four cars drove county roads east of Pueblo this morning,
looking for Snowy Owls and other raptors and other birds. We didn't see any

The White-winged Scoter was swimming around the ice-line in the State Wildlife
Area on the NW side of Pueblo Reservoir from noon to 1pm today, and then a boat
scared it off, though I was able to get some flight photos. They can be seen

Since there might be some people still interested in seeing the female or
immature WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Pueblo Reservoir, I have an update from Margie
Joy, she is looking at it around 1030am from the boat ramp at the State
Wildlife Area on the north west side of Pueblo Reservoir this morning.
The LONG-TAILED DUCK that SeEtta Moss found a couple of days ago, is still at
Brush Hollow Reservoir, near Penrose, in Fremont County. It was present this
morning at 730am near the dam. Nice find and thanks to SeEtta.

Several birders were able to see the White-winged Scoter around 9 to 930am or
so, from both spots, West Fisherman's Point and from the boat ramp at the State
Wildlife Area at Pueblo Reservoir. Later in the morning, it wasn't seen, so it
might have moved to some other part of the reservoir.

are looking at the White-winged Scoter from the State Wildlife Area on the
North West side looking east. This bird seems to be hanging around so far.

of Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo County), yielded the continuing immature/female
White-winged Scoter. It was about in the same place as last Thursday, swimming
between the State Wildlife Area old boat ramp and West Fisherm
There was a female/immature White-winged Scoter swimming on Pueblo Reservoir
late this afternoon (Jan 12th). I saw it from the State Wildlife Area old boat
ramp, looking back east toward West Fisherman's Point. Probably can be seen

and snowy roads made for low turnout of people (six people total). It looks
