A White-winged Dove just started singing outside my apartment in Boulder. I
heard the species here once earlier this week, also in mid-afternoon, but
other than that I haven't been hearing it at all this spring or summer.
Wonder what the deal is.

Ultimately, I think this bird provides strong evidence that Cordilleran and
Pacific-slope Flycatchers are probably not separable with confidence in the
field, even by ear -- although spectrograms should do the trick.

Gunbarrel's resident White-winged Dove (or one of them?) is singing
right outside my window right now. This is the first time I've heard
him here in a couple of months. It is likely the same bird that
Walter Szeliga reported a few days ago from a half-mile east of here,
but who knows?

I'd caught up with redpolls on more than one occasion this winter, but they
were always found by somebody else. I got four of my own today on the walk
home from the bus stop, where the Twin Lake Trail meets Robinson Place.
They took off to the north. Hope they stay in the neighborhood.

We arrived at the Loveland Pass pull-off at 10 this morning with the
somewhat vain hope of finding white-tailed ptarmigan. I've been recording
birds in CO for the past month and, somehow, never managed to get up to
ptarmigan country. We were greeted by
Commons Park, about four blocks away as the dove flies. I can't prove it
was a third bird, but that was my impression.
This species may be starting a permanent colonization of the area.

A female Williamson's Sapsucker was the highlight of a fairly birdy morning
at Green Mountain Cemetery in southwest Boulder. She was moving around
mostly in the SW corner of the cemetery.

it hit the jackpot and gobbled about 40 of these smaller prey items
in 30 seconds! Now, the situation may change, but as far as I can tell so

Probably the rarest sighting was an early male *Lark Bunting* that flew
across Highway 71 in Crowley County north of Box Springs yesterday.

A male Black-throated Gray Warbler has been singing for the past half hour
at the west end of Kittredge Ponds near the south end of the CU-Boulder
main campus. This species showed up here once last spring, too.

The Varied Thrush showed up right before dusk to join the warbler. A sweet
pair of county birds waiting for me upon my return from the Rio Grande

A White-eyed Vireo was half a block north of the entrance to Green Mountain
Cemetery in Boulder just now. Detected by song, well seen, audio recorded.

Just to remind everybody: female orioles sing frequently. So do female
cardinals and grosbeaks. In fact, females sing at least rarely in most
passerine species. So beware of assuming that a bird is a male just because
it's singing!
