[cobirds] Surf Scoter - Baseline Reservoir, Boulder County
COBirders, Peter Gent discovered a female Surf Scoter at Baseline Reservoir this morning, which has since been well photographed by John Salisbury and others from the north end along Baseline Rd. The bird was actively feeding and occasionally seen in flight. A Common Loon was also spotted on the western side of the Res., more easily viewed from Cherryvale Rd. Good birding! [cobirds] Boulder County Birding Oct. 27
With Pomerine Jaeger on my mind, I visited Boulder and Lagerman Reservoirs this morning. No jaegers, but impressive waterfowl and a few late shorebirds. Lagerman had six Wilson's Snipe, three Long-billed Dowitchers, three Black-bellied Plover, a Greater Yellowlegs, a Least Sandpiper and a dozen or so Killdeer. There were quite a few Northern Pintail, several Canvasback and a lone Wood Duck among 500+ ducks on the water. Boulder Res. had the continuing Pacific and Common Loons and a lone Red-breasted Merganser. Sandhill Cranes continue streaming by... [cobirds] Boulder Grays
Hi COBirders, Once the clouds lifted around midday, I went out to the CU East Campus area, from the confluence ponds to the scoreboard. There were two Black-throated Gray Warblers feeding primarily in Boxelder along the bikebath just north of the ponds -- a male and a female. In the burned out scrub adjacent to the northern pond, there was at least one Gray Flycatcher along with Green-tailed Towhees, a Marsh Wren, a Virginia Warbler, both Myrtle and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warblers and many, many Yellow Warblers. Photos of the Black-throated Grays can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/pgburke/52893312928 Good birding! Re: Fw: [cobirds] Rare warbler diets
COBirders, Just to add to this wonderful discussion, I ventured down to the creek on Thursday late morning and found the Northern Parula feeding with a pair of Audubon's Yellow-rumpeds high in a leafless tree. I stuck around hoping to see the Yellow-throated and was fortunate to see it briefly feeding among the rocks right along the stream. It was then I noticed what a hot spot this section was, per Nathan's description. I was hoping to photograph the Yellow-throated Warbler, so I took a seat and waited. Over the next hour or so I watched the Parula, two Audubon's and one Myrtle Yellow-rump, American Goldfinch, Pink-sided and Oregon Dark-eyed Juncos, House Finch, White-crowned Sparrow, American Crow, Chipping Sparrow, American Robin, White-breasted Nuthatch and European Starling all scouring this one area. As Nathan noted, the Parula and Yellow-rumped Warblers were doing some flycatching, but for the most part all the birds were gleaning from the rocks and branches quite close to the water. This would support Dave's hypothesis for a localized insect hatch as aquatic insects tend to pause after emerging from their pupal(?) skins to allow their wings to unfold and dry. Of course the Yellow-throated Warbler never returned while I was there, but that's how it often goes... [cobirds] Congrats to Luke Pheneger for finding a First State Record today...in Nebraska.
Luke and I set out to bird in and around the Pawnee National Grassland this morning. One of our main targets was Sharp-tailed Grouse, and we found a total of four: one fly-over and a group of three just south of the Nebraska state line. A few minutes later, while we were still in Colorful Colorado, Luke spotted three birds that turned out to be Western Bluebirds. Luke noted that the birds were technically in Nebraska, and decided to create a new eBird list, then had the presence of mind to check on the status of Western Bluebird in Nebraska. With just a few clicks and swipes on his phone, he determined that this sighting might in fact be a first for the state of Nebraska. We hastily acquired a few documentary photos, posted the list to eBird and within minutes had confirmation that it was indeed a first state record. Congrats to Luke! Birding on the prairies was delightful with sunny skies and no wind. American Kestrels were moving through in numbers, terrorizing the last few flocks of Lapland Longspurs as well as the early-arriving Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspurs. We had great scope views of at least nine Mountain Plovers, an encouraging count for sure. Thanks Duane, I think there should be a new category for rare birds in Colorado — 1st state record except that Duane already saw it like 20 years ago :) I found this bird while leading a trip for Bird Conservency of the Rockies. The good news is that everyone in our group was able to get on the bird after it flushed from the Russian Olives, but then it flew out of sight. I hope others are able to relocate it this afternoon or tomorrow. How long did your bird stick around for? [cobirds] HUDSONIAN GODWIT, Lagerman Reservoir, Boulder County
COBirders, This weather system brought in some good birds at Lagerman Reservoir, first spotted, I believe, by Eric DeFonso, including a breeding plumaged Hudsonian Godwit. Also present were a Marbled Godwit, Whimbrel, 50+ Wilson's Phalarope, 50+ American Avocet, a dozen or so Long-billed Dowitchers and a smattering of other shorebirds and peeps, most if not all Least Sandpipers. The scene turned hectic when a Peregrine Falcon showed up for a snack, putting the shorebirds along with 100+ Franklin's Gulls and many ducks into frenzied flight. [cobirds] Everyone loves owls!
COBirders, The pygmy-owl scene in Lyons is one of those times when "our" hobby spills over into the public consciousness. We see this when a rare bird shows up in a residential area, or when a group of non-birders happen across a group of birders. In these moments we can focus on what we have in common or what makes us different. Somewhere in all this conflict is an opportunity for us birders to share our knowledge and appreciation of birds with these other folks who are clearly interested, but maybe less familiar with some of the finer points of birding etiquette. Sharing a scope or binoculars is a great way to strike up conversation. The homeowners on Old Saint Vrain Rd. have been putting up with us birders for decades. Many of them have politely engaged with us and forged an alliance of sorts. Perhaps we can do the same with the photographers drawn to this location with the dream of getting good photos of an otherwise hard to see bird. On a personal note, I too am a birder+photographer. It takes a while to learn when it is ok to approach birds and when it's not, and part of that process is feedback from other photographers, birders, homeowners, etc. If we provide that feedback constructively, then we're helping. [cobirds] Colorado Birds is seeking a Feature Writer!
COBirders, *Colorado Birds*, CFO's quarterly journal, is seeking a dedicated individual willing to research, compile and publish *News From The Field* quarterly in the journal. The current author, Dean Shoup, is willing to provide training and instruction on specific job duties. *News From The Field* contains a brief description of statewide weather conditions for the reporting period and details notable sightings from across the state. As a regular feature writer for the journal, the author would receive $150 per report. *Anyone interested should contact Peter Burke edi...@cobirds.org *. [cobirds] On Mexican Ducks and the notion that not every bird is identifiable
COBirders, A bit of armchair birding on my part. There have been several migrant waterfowl reported in Boulder County this weekend. In addition, a male Mexican Duck has been reported at Hecla Lake in Lafayette. I'm not sure if a Mexican Duck is considered to be a migrant, vagrant or resident in Northern Colorado in November, but it's a good bird in any respect. While I've yet to see this bird in person, I've seen some excellent photos on eBird. There has been quite a bit of chatter regarding the slightly curled tail feathers (upper tail coverts), which I've often heard are evidence of Mallard genes. A little bit of Googling revealed several excellent articles on the topic, among them: a 2012 essay in Colorado Birds <http://web.corral.tacc.utexas.edu/UAF/arctos/mediaUploads/demboski/In_the_Scope_CB_October_2012.pdf> by Tony Leukering and Steve Mlodinow arguing for full species status for Mexican Duck. (The AOS split Mallard and Mexican Duck in 2020.) Jack Bushong wrote a thorough article <https://www.aba.org/mexican-duck/> on the field identification of Mexican Ducks for the ABA website, which also has a terrific photo essay <https://www.aba.org/mexican-duck-photo-essay/> by Steve Mlodinow. Steve argues that "pure" Mexican Ducks *can* exhibit Mallard-like features, like the curly tail feathers. So how comfortable can we be in identifying Mexican Ducks in Northern Colorado? I'd be interested to learn what others have to say on this topic. But one thing is certain -- we should all brush up on the differences between these two species and make an effort to document sightings in eBird, particularly with photos, keeping in mind that selecting "Mallard/Mexican Duck" is a good option when one is not certain. If the links embedded in the post don't work, here are the URLs: *Leukering/Mlodinow* - http://web.corral.tacc.utexas.edu/UAF/arctos/mediaUploads/demboski/In_the_Scope_CB_October_2012.pdf *Bushong* - https://www.aba.org/mexican-duck/ *Mlodinow* - https://www.aba.org/mexican-duck-photo-essay/ Good birding, Peter Burke Managing Editor, Colorado Birds edi...@cobirds.org -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. COBirders, The Summer Issue of Colorado Birds has been posted to the CFO website <https://cobirds.org/Publications/> and is available to members who are logged in. The printed version will mail in approx. two weeks. In addition to the latest CFO News, the issue includes a paper about the first documented case of leucism in Black Swifts. Dave Leatherman's always-entertaining column, The Hungry Bird, examines a highly specialized feeding strategy that involves flipping over cowpies, if you can believe it. And Peter Gent has reviewed a new novel from John Vanderpoel, Full Chase Mode, detailing his Big Year in 2011 - a great read! [cobirds] Sagebrush Sparrow, Admiral Burke Park, Boulder Cty
COBirders, I had a very brief look at a Sagebrush Sparrow at approx. 4:30 at the SE corner of Admiral Burke Park, in the scrub by the gazebo. I only saw the bird because a Red-winged Blackbird apparently didn't want it around. The blackbird first flushed the sparrow to within a few feet of where I was standing, then with a second pass, the sparrow disappeared into the scrub. I did hear a few high-pitched chips, but I never relocated it. Peter Burke Boulder County -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Official Results for the 2021 Colorado Birding Challenge!
The official results for the inaugural Colorado Birding Challenge (COBC) are in! A total of 50 teams chose to compete, following ABA Big Day rules that include having at least 2 members per team who all see or hear 95% of the birds counted in the county of their choice. An additional 23 teams participated in the “non-competing” category and had an enjoyable day observing birds while raising money for grassland bird conservation. Collectively, the 73 teams recorded 281 species in 44 counties throughout Colorado – a solid showing that also contributes valuable data to eBird’s Global Big Day. Once all pledges have been collected, we expect to have raised over $25,000. Final results are posted at cobirds.org/CFO/COBC. First Place in the *category of Photo/Audio*, which required each team to document every sighting with either a photograph or an audio recording goes to Team JPEG Juncos. Birding in Arapahoe County, the JPEG Juncos, comprised of Rob Raker and Mitchell Bailey, documented an impressive 94 species, 60% of the county par. Honorable mention goes to Team Minner-Lee, a father-son duo (Mark and Everest Minner-Lee) who birded Boulder County and documented 69 species (40% par). First Place in the *Green category* goes to the Masked Trogons, who birded Larimer County by bike and by foot. Congratulations to CFO President Nick Komar and CFO Board Director Greg Osland who managed to find 108 species (56% par) without the use of a vehicle on a very windy day! Other green teams included the Cheyenne Canyon Wrens in El Paso County, led by Allisa Linfield, and the Flying Penguins led by Jim Burnham, who also competed in Larimer County. Notably, Erin Strasser of BCR Bike for Baird’s, biked, kayaked and hiked as a one-person, non-competing team in Larimer County In the *Youth category*, First Place honors belong to the Crystal River’s Wild Scenics (Mary Harris, Madalynn Connor, George Waaler and Katie Daniels) who birded in Garfield County and managed to see 74 species, 63% of par! Congrats to the Little Fledglings, led by Reed Gorner, who found 83 species in Jefferson County (46% par) and the Dangerous Ducks, co-led by Erin and Ezekial Lynum, whose kids turned up 41 species in Larimer County. There were 39 teams that competed in the automobile category covering 35 different Colorado Counties! Competition was quite strong in spite of challenging weather conditions. Four teams managed to find 90+ percent of the county par, which is truly amazing. One Big Holiday, led by Ryan Votta in Archuleta County, tallied 106 species, 93.8% par. The D/Ts (We Can Quit Anytime) led by Glenn Dunmire found 122 species in Dolores County, 95.3% par. The Grand Bunch, led by Sue Riffe birding in, wait for it, Grand County, had 102 species -- a whopping 97.1% of par! *But First Place and bragging rights for the 2021 COBC Automobile category goes to Team Ouray *who counted 92 species in Ouray County, representing 98.9% of par! Congratulations to Don Marsh, Cliff Utech and Kent Nelson for a well-deserved win! As a reminder, each of the winning teams will be awarded $1,000 to donate to the Colorado conservation organization of their choice! Of course, the real winners are Colorado's grassland birds who will benefit from the conservation efforts managed by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, as well as all of the 173 observers who birded in this inaugural edition of the Colorado Birding Challenge! On behalf of CFO, thank you to all the teams and everyone who donated. Together we have raised needed conservation funds and launched a statewide birding event that we hope will be around for decades to come! *Peter Burke* CFO Board of Directors COBC Competition Reviewer -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] New wildlife Parks Pass?
Hi Jared, We are working on the summer issue of Colorado Birds that will include information on the new SWA Pass <https://cpw.state.co.us/aboutus/Pages/News-Release-Details.aspx?NewsID=7734> from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Starting in 2020, CPW required anyone 18 and over to have either a hunting or fishing license to enter any of the 350+ State Wildlife Areas. This generated considerable feedback, particularly from Colorado's birding community including a letter from CFO President Nick Komar, resulting in the creation of the SWA Pass. CPW has managed the SWAs for hunting and fishing primarily because these were the groups providing funding through licenses. It will be interesting to see how much revenue the new pass generates and what effect that has on CPW management in the future. For more information about the SWA Pass: https://cpw.state.co.us/aboutus/Pages/News-Release-Details.aspx?NewsID=7734 Good birding, Peter Peter Burke Colorado Birds Managing Editor On Wed, May 5, 2021 at 9:12 AM Jared Hamby wrote: > Hey everyone. Notable I suppose only for the time of year, which seems early to me, but as others have noted, individual birds who fail to breed/nest often chose to get a head start on migration. [cobirds] Collared-Dove ID
COBirders, Last week I was on Old South Saint Vrain Rd. in Lyons, Boulder County, and encountered a very pale Collared-Dove. I'm curious if people think this is African, a hybrid Eurasian x African or just a very pale or Leucistic Eurasian? Re: [cobirds] Robert A. Spencer, March 31, 1924 - May 11, 2020
I've had the pleasure of running into Bob Sr. and Bob Jr. on several occasions over the years. Even from his wheelchair, Bob's enthusiasm was contagious and I feel fortunate to have met him. The last time I saw them together was in Fall, 2018 out at Cottonwood Marsh in Boulder. After Bob filled me in on the birds that were around, I took this photo <https://flic.kr/p/2bu8RE7> of him. It's been great reading about everyone's experiences with him over the years. My heart goes out to his family. [cobirds] CFO Website Has A New Look!
Hi everyone, You may have noticed that the CFO website <https://cobirds.org/> has been completely redesigned and reorganized! The changes will help to make our content easier to access on mobile devices and better reflect the benefits that CFO provides its members as well as the public. Here are a few highlights: - *Headlines Block* - contains the latest news from CFO about programs, field trips, important dates and more. - *CFO Membership Block* - provides easy access to all member benefits, information about upcoming events, field trip registration and volunteer opportunities. - *NEW Colorado Birding Block* - this new section includes resources for county birding, access to the CFO ID Quiz archives, information about other birding organizations throughout Colorado and other helpful links. - *eBird Rare Birds Report* - check the footer at the bottom of the homepage for up-to-the-minute sightings of rare birds statewide. This has been a big project and CFO is grateful for the time and effort invested by all its volunteer board members and especially to Ann Johnson of AJ Endeavors, whose patience and expertise were on full display from start to finish! We hope that you will take a few minutes to explore https://cobirds.org/ and you can always use the form at the bottom of the homepage to ask questions or provide feedback. [cobirds] Two legs of the Longspur Trifecta in Boulder County
COBirders, Driving along the eastern Boulder County roads this morning brought back memories of the epic winter storm on May 1, 2013 that featured several Lapland, dozens of Chestnut-collared and hundreds of McCown's Longspurs. A true Longspur Trifecta enjoyed by many. The action this morning was not quite as dynamic, but there were many birds concentrated along the edges of the roads where plows had exposed a narrow ribbon of forage. Horned Lark, Western Meadowlark, American Robin, Killdeer, Savannah and Vesper Sparrows were numerous. The prizes were a single male McCown's Longspur <https://flic.kr/p/2iRqyDB> and a very cooperative male Chestnut-collared Longspur <https://flic.kr/p/2iRscL6> found by Luke Pheneger. Re: [cobirds] Where can i find the Rare Bird Alert Form?
Bob, Great find and glad you reached out. Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO) is also home to the Colorado Rare Birds Committee (CBRC). You can find a link to the CBRC website from the CFO site cowbirds.org, or you can go directly to cobrc.org. The CBRC site includes a list of species that should be formally documented by county, so you can quickly check if Northern Saw-Whet Owl sightings for your area meet this threshold. For anyone birding in Colorado, it is a good idea to familiarize oneself with what is considered rare for your home county, and if you do find a rare bird, please take the time to document your find! [cobirds] Gyrfalcon
COBirders, I wanted a flight shot of the Gyr for Christmas and this morning, David Ely and I, along with several others were fortunate to get good looks, and then watch as the bird pursued a Rock Pigeon, showing off some amazing high-speed aerobatics. (Both in fact, as I think the Pigeon survived multiple attacks.) Anyway, I got my Xmas gift, you can see here <https://flic.kr/p/2dEZb2d>. Happy holidays everyone! [cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler, Pectoral Sandpiper and other Boulder migrants
The Pleasant View Marsh area remains a very active warbler spot with hundreds of Yellow-rumped <https://flic.kr/p/28D3tZb> and good numbers of Wilson's and Orange-crowned <https://flic.kr/p/2bmM9gg>. And I was "pleasantly" surprised to see that the Prothonotary Warbler <https://flic.kr/p/2bhoyVs> was still among them. Other birds in the marsh included Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. At Cottonwood Marsh, Walden Ponds, the number of Wilson's Snipe <https://flic.kr/p/2bjH5sq> appears to be dwindling. Re: [cobirds] POSSIBLE ANHINGA in Delta County - update
All, Anhingas in flight tend to flap a few times, then glide. Flap-flap-glide, flap-flap-glide... and their long tails are distinctive vs. cormorants. These would be the two primary field marks for flyover Anhinga. Breast pattern varies depending on plumage and light, and is a good character, but more subtle. [cobirds] Yellow-throated Vireo, CU East Campus, Boulder Cty
CoBirders, This evening I had a Yellow-throated Vireo on the west side of the western-most pond. The bird was low in a boxelder along with a Yellow Warbler. My first thought was that it was a Cassin's Vireo, since one was reported at this site a few days ago. But that was ruled out due to the yellow throat that extended about halfway to the belly and the overall yellowish green head with bright yellow spectacles. After a few minutes the bird flew in the direction of the pond, and I was not able to relocate it, even with the sharp eyes of Peter Gent and Stephan Chang helping me. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera. I hope the bird sticks around and that others are able to get on it. [cobirds] Boulder Bluebird trifecta
I thought I'd check Boulder Reservoir for jaegers this evening. There wasn't much action on the water at all, but flocks of bluebirds were everywhere. Most were Mountain Bluebirds, but along 51st St., SW of Sixmile Res. there was a group of 4-5 Western and possibly an Eastern. Surprisingly, these birds were flushed and pursued by an American Kestrel. I parked at the North lot where there were several dozen more MOBL and one EABL. Not much else that I was able to turn up. Re: [cobirds] Montane Birds on the Move
Hi Ted, Thanks for sharing the NAB article. I'm curious if the heavy smoke that blanketed much of the northern Rockies might be partly or wholly to blame? Are you aware of other instances where heavy smoke, without regional fires, has generated species movement akin to the effects of other large weather systems like, say, cat 5 hurricanes? [cobirds] Boulder County Phalaropes and a fleeting Whimbrel
Cobirders, This evening there were 12-14 Wilson's Phalaropes at Sombrero Marsh feeding actively along with a single White-faced Ibis. A lone male Great-tailed Grackle was singing in earnest and Yellow-headed Blackbirds have arrived. I visited Cottonwood Marsh, which is evaporating at a worrying pace, and found a Snowy Egret and a single Whimbrel. Unfortunately the Whimbrel did not stay, flying noisily north. Maybe it will spend the evening at Lagerman or MacIntosh? That's about it. With luck the high pressure will bring new birds in rather than flushing out the few we have around here... [cobirds] Excellent Boulder County Shorebirding today -- 15 species.
COBirders, I started the day at Boulder Reservoir (NW lot) where there were 12 Willet, 1 LB Dowitcher, 1 Marbled Godwit, 9 WF Ibis, 1 Semipalmated Plover, 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper and 1-2 each of Least and Baird's Sandpipers. Wilson's Snipe could be heard displaying in the marshes. A large flock of Franklin's Gulls plus a single winter plumaged Bonaparte's Gull were also in the mix. At Lagerman: 15 Marbled Godwits, a Spotted Sandpiper and a Willet, plus just to the north in Swede's Pond, a LB Dowitcher, both Yellowlegs and a Western Sandpiper. At Cottonwood Marsh: Willet, American Avocet and a Solitary Sandpiper. Would someone please let some water flow into the marsh? Teller #5 is completely dry. Sombrero Marsh is overflowing. A single Yellow-headed Blackbird was the highlight there. And finally, Baseline Res.: This looked like it might be the shorebird hotspot this spring, but today all I could find were 2 Spotted Sandpipers. [cobirds] Re: Phoebes near Hygiene, Boulder Co
Cobirders, As Peter Gent described, we had quite the phoebe show up in NE Boulder County, with Say's, Eastern and a third individual. I've posted photos of the two Eastern Phoebes and several shots of the other guy <https://www.flickr.com/photos/pgburke/>, which may be a light male Black Phoebe, or potentially a hybrid Black X Eastern Phoebe. Things that made us consider a hybrid include the light color of bird's head -- not the jet black of a typical male Black Phoebe. There was also a faint suggestion of some white or at least light coloring near the throat. And most interestingly, the bird was initially singing the one-note song of a Black Phoebe, but later was observed attempting the two-note Eastern Phoebe song. I'd be very interested to learn what others make of this bird. B! The Boulder Bullock's Oriole seems to be doing fine in spite of the chilly temps. I watched the bird today, seemingly comfortable as it fed below the Osborn's suit feeder beside junkos. There were also Cedar Waxwings in the area along with a single Bohemian Waxwing -- I'll be keeping my eyes out for that one tomorrow for the Boulder CBC. [cobirds] Pomarine Jaeger - Chatfield State Park
Cobirders, The last week has been Homecoming at CU Boulder, one of my busiest times of year, so when I read the news about the Chatfield Pomarine Jaeger, well, let's just say I was happy for all of you who were able to see the bird. Every day I expected to hear that it had left... It's tough having to work, knowing a life bird is just a 30-minute drive away. When I arrived at Chatfield State Park around noon today, there were more boats than birds. Not a good sign. I did see a few birders, but none had found the Jaeger. Yet patience paid off and I was able to locate the bird from a shady vantage near the north boat ramp around 3:30 or so. And speaking of boats, a huge thanks to Dave and Laurie who graciously guided me in their very cool little speed boat. We got pretty good looks at the bird <https://flic.kr/p/N6PP6J>! [cobirds] Two Glossy/White-faced Ibis at Cottonwood Marsh, Boulder County
Happy November! There was a single immature Glossy/White-faced Ibis at this location last week. That individual had a plain, uniform-colored face with a dark iris. [cobirds] Ibis at Cottonwood Marsh, Boulder County
CoBirders, I observed a juvenile Glossy/White-faced Ibis this morning at Cottonwood Marsh in Boulder County. The bird appeared overall dark to me, with no noticeable white marks on the face, grayish bill and legs. At that point a hunter's gun flushed the bird along with many ducks and a few Greater Yellowlegs. It briefly landed on an island giving me a chance to see it in close detail in the morning sunlight. I could tell it had a dark, not red, iris. A few more gunshots and the bird was gone, but I felt confident it was a Glossy - based on the dark eye. Hearing that David Waltman had re-found the bird, I went back for further study. There's a note in Sibley next to 1st winter White-faced Ibis that says, "iris red by Feb." I wasn't aware that a juv. White-faced would also have a dark eye at this time of year... Without that mark to differentiate the two species, I'm not sure this bird can be identified reliably. I've updated my eBird list to Glossy/White-faced. Other late-ish birds on this glorious October day were three Long-billed Dowitchers at Teller Lake. [cobirds] Fun birding at CU East Campus, Boulder County
COBirders, I spent the morning along the bike path by the CU East Campus, Confluence Ponds. There was a female/first-year Blackpoll Warbler, a Veery haning out with White-crowned Sparrows, several Swainson's Thrushes, singing Red-eyed Vireo, Gray Flycatcher and the previously reported Northern Mockingbird was on the west side of the pond. Western Wood-Pewees were seemingly at every turn...plus many unidentified small empids. Later I was at Cottonwood Marsh where the Black Terns continue their photography-defying dancing -- I counted 18 today, but there have been upwards of 28 this week... As the storm approached, I heard and then saw four Sandhill Cranes heading east...being pushed by the weather. Seems late for Sandhills, no? [cobirds] Red Phalarope, Chatfield SP continues
COBirders, The Red Phalarope reported earlier by Joey Kellner from Chatfield SP was re-found this afternoon from the swimming beach area, though the many boats were pushing it around quite a bit. Also seen were at least three Sabine's Gulls. My good luck boat hitchhiking continued, and I was able to get a reasonably good photo of the Phalarope that can be viewed here https://www.flickr.com/photos/pgburke/15255352417/in/photostream/. [cobirds] Philadelphia Vireo - Late report for Gregory Canyon, Boulder Cty.
COBirders, I visited Gregory Canyon Wednesday evening. The access is challenging as the road remains dramatically washed out from the Sept. floods, photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/pgburke/14114925219/ but there is limited parking available. Plumbeous Vireos were numerous and vocal, though difficult to see. Trying to track one down is when I was fortunate to see the Philly Vireo fly into a Ponderosa Pine. It had a very bright yellow throat and breast and a dark head with bright white supercillium. It was not singing but did offer a few sneer calls that readily separate it from Warbling Vireo, which nests in the canyon. Other nice birds included heard Red-breasted Nuthatch and singing Hermit Thrush, and a displaying Yellow-breasted Chat. I bought an extra-large fanny pack just so I could carry it on field trips. It simply illustrates more plumages of North American birds than any other field guide. I frequently find on field trips that I can illustrate this to participants when they can't find a bird we're looking at in another field guide. We can find it, however, in the Sibley guide. You can imagine then that, like many other birders, I have been waiting with excitement for the second edition of the guide. That edition was released on March 11, and I received my preordered copy over the weekend. On Tuesday night I looked through it closely and was disappointed to find that it suffered from what in bird plumage would be called melanism. Many of the illustrations are simply too dark. This, I believe, is a printing problem and not a problem with David Allen Sibley's fine illustrations. If the printing problems are corrected for the next printing, this will be an outstanding field guide, with a significant number of species added as well as other improvements. Until the next printing, however, I would suggest holding off on purchasing this guide unless you want to invest in it as a curiosity like a coin minted with an error. As a field guide, however, the printing distortions render the first print less than useful. If you are unsure, you can check a copy at The Tatter Cover, Boulder Book Store, or your favorite local book seller. Brook MacDonald's excellent review of the second edition can be found here http://naturetravelnetwork.com/book-review-sibley-guide- birds-second-edition/ and my review will be posted shortly on the DFO web site www.dfobirders.org. -- Chuck Hundertmark 2546 Lake Meadow Drive Lafayette, CO 80026 303-604-0531 Cell: 720-771-8659 chunde...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Parking Nazis
Last weekend I tried twice, unsuccessfully, to see the Slaty-backed Gull at Aurora Rez. I enjoy chasing rarities from time to time, and missing is part of the game, though I am disappointed to have missed a great bird that would have been a lifer... Anyway, I had heard that there is a $10 entrance fee per car per visit, which is ridiculous, but that's not why I'm writing. My first visit was late Saturday, and when I arrived there was no one at the gate, so I figured I was just lucky. In fact I was decidedly UNLUCKY as the next thing I noticed was a huge flock of gulls departing for some other roost. Crap. Sunday I arrived a bit after two o'clock and again the gate house was un-manned. Makes sense. It was Sunday after all. Later, while scanning the gulls up by the dam, I watched the park ranger ticket my car, which is when I learned that there is a SELF SERVE PAY STATION at Aurora Rez. CRAP! Ok. So getting to the point of this story, in fact it was not a ticket. The Ranger had given me a copy of the rule book and a warning that if I didn't pay on my way out, then I'd be in trouble. This is not how Parking Nazi's operate in my experience. (it is a vulgar term, I know, but earned...believe me!) Well, I did pay on my way out, lifebirdless but very appreciative for the leniency from the kind and understanding ranger whom I do not include among the previously mentioned group of professionals. Unfortunately for me, I did not have $10, so I was forced to put $20 in the envelope. It's ok, I deserved it, right? Well, to my astonishment I just received a call from an incredibly well-mannered and thoughtful parking staff professional. He noticed the overpayment and suspected that I likely didn't have the correct amount, and wanted to know if he could send me a refund (!!!) Are you kidding me! So. After many, many instances of parking authority abuse, I feel compelled to report this exceptionally kind act. Thank you Ranger Terry. You are a gentleman and role model! [cobirds] Common Grackles roosting in Sombrero Marsh, Boulder county
COBirders, I made a brief stop at Sombrero Marsh/Pond this evening at 6:00 (Marsh Wren is now my nemesis BOCO bird...) What I found instead was a large flock of Common Grackles - probably 500+ - roosting in the reeds on the far side of the pond and in a few of the surrounding trees. As I scanned the pond, I noticed a stream of grackles descending into the reeds that turned out to be the head of a flock of at least 1,000 that extended as far as I could see. An impressive if not unprecedented sight. It will be interesting to hear what tomorrow's cold front has in store for us bird-wise. Perhaps we'll see a bigger push of finches and other higher-elevation species drop down? Or maybe a decent passerine flight?? [cobirds] Walden Ponds, Boulder Cty., today
COBirders, I ventured out during the letup in the rain today...what a difference from Sunday! Cottonwood Marsh was nearly dry on Sunday and today is full to overflowing. The road on the west side of the wetland is completely washed out, and water is cascading down like a miniature Niagra Falls! The boardwalk was more than a foot under water when I left. No shore, therefore no shorebirds at Cottonwood. But there were at least 8 Black Tern, plus many ducks including a pair of female Bufflehead. Another surprise were approx. 9 Tree Swallows, the only non-Barn Swallows I've seen in weeks. A quick tour of the nearby ponds turned up mostly Killdeer and Solitary Sandpipers, 13 SOSA by my count. There were also 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 1 Least Sandpiper and 3 fly-over Dowitchers, presumably Long-billed. I never re-found these to get a good look. No sign of the previously reported Pectoral Sandpipers, but I didn't check the western ponds. There were a few warblers about, mostly Wilson's. An Eastern Phoebe, previously reported by Ted Floyd, and a few sparrows including 2 Clay-colored. I surprised a Sharp-shinned Hawk that was too wet to flee and instead just perched with its wings and tail spread like a cormorant trying to dry off...like the rest of us no doubt. [cobirds] Very few shorebirds in Boulder county!
COBirders, Christian Nunes and I woke early this morning, well, early-ish, and spent some time along Old St. Vrain Road in Lyons. The riparian area along the river was fairly birdy, with highlights including Indigo Bunting, Chestnut-sided Warbler and Plumbeous Vireo. We then switched into shorebird mode hitting several likely areas in the eastern county...only there were virtually no shorebirds! One American Avocet at Little Gaynor Lake; One Spotted Sandpiper, one Greater Yellowlegs and four Solitary Sandpipers at Walden Ponds and 14 Wilson's Phalarope at Panama Reservoir.
