On 11/23 in Del Norte, we have a Northern Shrike perched atop a tall spruce
tree that was attracting White-Winged Crossbills about 10 days ago.

On April 2 with high-powered scope the Brant was seen south of the Monte Vista
NWR, west side of Hwy 15; also 4 Snow Geese. No White-fronted Geese were seen
and fewer Sandhill Cranes, perhaps because strong winds have kicked up. Merlin
was across the road from MVNWR office.

Jan. 11, I saw a tundra swan from bridge across Rio Grande, NW of Monte Vista

Today, 9/29, a Bobolink was flying low with 6 Mountain Bluebirds, on dry
grassland on lower Cat Creek in Conejos County - quite a surprise. At about
9,500 el., there was a Pine Grosbeak in Rio Grande County. Several Gray Jays at
about 10,000 -10,5000 el. in Conejos County and 4 Clark's
With only Sibley and no sighting here, some discussion might be helpful for me
and for others, too. E.g., why is the Chatfield bird not a Lesser Black-backed?

Here is a mid-afternoon report for today (3/11) at MVNWR, a quiet time of day
for viewing. A concentration of cranes was west of Colorado 15, back behind the
work buildings. Auto tour route has more open water now with many of the birds
hunkering a ways off from road, so a strong scope will
2 Turkey Vultures soaring near Del Norte today - the 1st of the season. Mobs
of cranes at MVNWR, especially at pulloff on County Road 8 South.

slowness/awkwardness of flegling kites in learning how to fly, cautions against
picking them up when they fall, advice to keep dogs and cats indoors, their

Golden-crowned. Plus hummers, etc. Blackbirds were raiding a field of canola
nearby. Imm. American Kestrals were in charge at grove along Colo. 115. Not

17 Turkey Vultures were roostng in their tree at the nursing home in Del Norte

A Sage Thrasher was in the greasewood NE of Hooper today. This species is a
fairly common breeder in San Luis Valley. Also, at Sand Dunes Pool, there was
aa Mountain Bluebird, right on schedule.
