The user manual says

"This simple yet powerful module can be used in the following ways:"

then lists five ways for it to be used, and then follows a very long
description of all the options.

Not sure I would agree this is a "simple" module. Maybe from a
technical/mathematical standpoint, but not from usage.

To me, it would make more sense if the CAT part was its own module,
and the channel mixing was its own.

## The Big Ones

The following is a summary of the main features added to darktable 4.0. These
features
are described more fully in the user manual and accompanying blog post.

- Color and exposure mapping

A new feature in the "exposure" and "color calibration" modules allows you to
define and save a target color/exposure for the color pickers, in order to
match any source object in the image against an arbitrary target
color. This can be used to perform white balance
(chromatic adaptation) against non-gray objects of known color, or to
ensure the color consistency of an object across a series of images.

- Filmic v6

Filmic v6 introduces new color science. This change removes the mandatory
desaturation
close to medium white and black and replaces it with a true gamut
mapping against the output (or export) color space. This allows for more
saturated colors, notably in blue skies.

For users who still prefer the "desaturated highlights" look,
you can still do this by disabling chroma preservation, but v6 adds a
hue handcuff to prevent the traditional hue shift that comes with this
method (where saturated blue skies degrade to cyan and saturated red to
yellow).

This gamut sanitization is the third and last to be added to darktable,
which now has a fully-sanitized color pipeline from input (color
calibration),
through artistic changes (color balance rgb) to output (filmic v6). Users
can now color-grade pictures safely in the knowledge that invalid input
colors can be recovered in the least destructive fashion possible early
in the pipeline, and valid colors can't be pushed out of gamut along the
pipeline.

Note: If modules are applied after filmic in the pipeline, they
don't benefit from this gamut mapping and rely on LittleCMS2 (if
enabled) at the final export stage, which does not gamut map as it
   should, and probably never did.

- Guided laplacian highlight reconstruction

A new "guided laplacian" method has been added to the "highlight
reconstruction" module. This uses an iterative and multi-scale wavelet
scheme to extract valid details from non-clipped RGB channel(s) if any,
uses these details to guide the reconstruction of clipped channels, and
finally
   propagates the color gradients from

[darktable-user] Exposure module, what happens here?

2022-05-15 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

darkatable version 3.8.1, on Ubuntu 20.04

I'm trying to understand what happens when I change the exposure module
mode from automatic to manual. I've noticed it many times, if I change
the mode from automatic to manual, application shows "working" message
and does something to image. I've not changed any other settings of
exposure module yet, just switching the mode.

For me, usually results are more desirable when I just switch the module
from automatic to manual mode. Whatever it does, it's better for me, but
I haven't understood it and trying to figure what I have to do use
automatic mode more effectively. Currently, I just change the mode and
be happy about it.

[darktable-user] Looking for easier way

2022-04-20 Thread Niranjan Rao

On darktable 3.8.1 Ubuntu 20.04

I am looking for easier or faster way to select images based on date
range. Collections does allow me to add or remove the images for dates
but selecting images for say couple of weeks when you have photos taken
almost every day in month means selecting 14 different dates manually
and every time choosing date filter, year, month and then desired date.

I vaguely remember using date range somewhere in darktable. Am I
mistaken and getting confused about some other tool? If so, is there any
other way to filter images taken in a certain date range? It can
potentially span across month and/or year.

Basic goal is to tag the images taken in certain weeks.

[darktable-user] Style with automatic selection

2022-01-29 Thread Niranjan Rao

On darktable 3.8.0

Many modules have a dropper or equivalent to pickup the optimized
values, examples are filmic and color calibration modules. Question is
when I create style from this, will it use the actual value or for the
new style it will treat as if dropper is clicked.

Most of the times, I am happy with the results of automatically picked
up values. However I'm not really sure what will happen if I apply say a
value picked up with in color calibration with a dropper to different set.

Hi Terry,

Again, it could be my misunderstanding. I do see color calibration in
the pipeline when I open the image. What does that instance do?

Question is stemming partly from other postings on list. Questions
essentially state that expectations are not met when image is opened
initially. I do understand that (raw) image needs to be developed to
your liking or I can develop my own style etc, but many of these
questions can be answered by default pipeline.

Incidentally, can I create my style where color calibration is done
based on value picked up by the dropper? Essentially, initial steps I
perform is clicking on dropper of filimic and color calibration before
proceeding to do anything else.

[darktable-user] Color calibration question

2022-01-16 Thread Niranjan Rao

On darktable 3.8.0, Ubuntu 20.04

This is most likely operator error or operator's lack of understanding.
However, I'm still curious to find out why this happens.

When I open a unedited raw file, darktable picks up certain settings for
color calibration. Settings chosen by darktable are rarely what I saw
with my own eyes or my idea of how image should look like. Usually, I go
to color calibration module and click on dropper. This time it does
pickup correctly and image looks more like how I saw it.

Clicking dropper module suggests darktable is aware of proper settings
and is able to figure out. Why does it not apply same settings in the
initial workflow/module it does when a new image is opened?

I know that a raw file can offer more data, and that darktable is
thought of mainly as a raw converter. My take is that darktable can -
and should -  be thought of as an image editor that happens to be able
to work with raw files.

The large majority of images I use darktable on are jpgs from a cell

do not have the big camera with me.

Top line cell phones produce shockingly good images nowadays - at
least when the lack of a short lens or a long lens is not a problem.
The old maxim that the best camera you have for a particular situation
is the one you happen to have with you is still true. I have the cell
phone with me more than I have a professional camera.

If I never shot another raw again in my life, that would not change my
view of darktable as the first choice in image editors. The speed,
power, and fluidity of work via darktable appear unmatched.

I'm not picking on the comment or the commenter. Far from it. It just
happens to give me the chance to address a notion that deserves a
wider audience, that darktable, as an editing tool, is bigger and more
powerful than is generally advertised. Darktable is the best editor
out there. Not just for raw files.

It sounds like you used copy and import. That will copy the files to new
directory and name it according to options set. One of the option is

Personally, I like the new scheme because it allows me to import from

Looks like you should have used add to library rather than copy and import.

from darktable or changing properties of module.

I believe chromium uses GPU behind the scenes - at least based on
command line options and other pointers in source code. That one and any
other programs I normally use don't exhibit this behavior. If mouse
button is stuck, chromium would select the region on simple mouse move.

I'll install Gimp and see if I can reproduce the problem.  PC was not
heavily loaded. I had barely opened one image from film strip at the
bottom and was planning to choose one of the modules after adjusting
exposure. Moving mouse around caused exposure module to go berserk and
moved every slider. I did switch to other programs to see if I can
reproduce and if it's mouse problem with no luck.

Have you observed the same with other programs
using opencl? I think Gimp could be a
candidate; try to keep it busy for a while and
see if that happens again. If so, my first
guess would be to blame the video driver and/or
the version of the x server. Is there a version
you could update to? Anyway, you may increase
the chances of a sensible answer posting this
question on an ubuntu list.

[darktable-user] Sticky mouse?

2021-10-10 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

I have noticed this behavior only for darktable on Ubuntu 20.04. Every
now and then darktable starts reacting as if I'm pressing and holding
down my left mouse button. Many times, this results into many unwanted
changes even when just traversing around modules.

My first instinct was mouse button had gone bad. But any other
application does not show similar symptoms. For example, right now,
writing this email in thunderbird does not result in any unwanted
selections or other effects of any mouse button being down.

Usually a reboot solves the problem. Restarting darktable does not help.
I've a laptop and both touchpad and external mouse show this behavior.
I've command line scripts that can enable/disable either of them and
have tested the behavior independently for each device. I find it very
hard to believe both devices going bad at the same time and problem
getting resolved after reboot apart from the fact that issue happens
only with darktable.

Anyone else noticed similar behavior? Any solutions?

Niranjan

Re: [darktable-user] Adding a browser

2021-10-08 Thread Niranjan Rao
Tagging and search capabilities in darktable are excellent. In case if
it's not clear, tags can be hierarchical like family|person and you can
search either by family or by person.

While it's not easily apparent, collections in lighttable is very
powerful. It allows you to do searches what would amount SQL's "and" and
"or" operations. It also allows you to filter based on date, location.

So you can easily search for images taken by my X camera with lens Y and
having ISO blah - just as an example.

While I don't have half a million images in my collection, I do maintain
what I consider a sizeable collection. After I went through tagging and
geotagging exercise I've never faced any issues locating the images I want.

I still have following items in my wishlist though. It could be there,
but I have not explored it enough. There is a custom sort option, but
have not spent time to see what it does.

 * Filtering the current view based on some other criteria apart from
ratings and rejected. It's pain to keep adjusting collection, but
   similar functionality can be achieved.
 * Sorting by multiple fields. For a family tree like Grand Father |
Children | Grand children, sometimes I have a need to sort by
children and then grand children to keep each family together.

I would cringe at the thought of asking it to handle 500,000 images in
a single database. I would divide my images into different catalogs
for speed and easy to find what I want. 500,000 images in any single
catalog sounds a challenge for the program because the database would
be so bloated.

Despite having a comprehensive suite of programs from Adobe. Maybe all
of them. I defer to DT for my editing. It is so much more fun and
capable. Occasionally I have to use GIMP as well because even DT can
not do everything. I have recently started using the color balance rgb
module by employing the 'add basic colorfulness' preset found in the
hamburger. Again someone on the list suggested this so I tried it.
This adds colorfulness to my images to give results more comparable to
other programs (not that I am advocating comparing programs). It has
made me explore this module further and I am learning to work
vibrance, saturation, chroma and brilliance based upon
separate adjustments to the shadows, midtones and highlights. I am
just being continually blown away by the editing capabilities of DT
compared to Lightroom.

This thread has made me look more at the capabilities of the
lightttable in DT. I am impressed at the improvements I am seeing
here. Yesterday I explored the tagging module following the suggestion
by Patrick and was pleasantly surprised how it would find images based
on keywords (tags in DT speak). I could then right click on the
keyword and have a collection of photos display in the lighttable
grid. This is showing me that DT is far more capable at organising and
finding photos than I realised. Once again well done to the
developers. I will continue to explore the capabilities of lighttable
as I get the chance. I am hoping I can use it to synchronise my
various backup hard drives for images. At this point of time I use LR
solely for this reason because it is very capable of doing that taska
dn I am used to the program, but maybe in time I may come to realise
that DT could also do. But I would not ask the developers to bloat DT
to try and match LR. The number one priority for DT should remain
editing. DT also edits JPG and Tiff files, but of course editing RAW
files is the best option in any program.

[darktable-user] Question about exposure and blend mode

2021-08-17 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

On darktable 3.6.0

I saw this in one of the videos on YouTube and trying to understand what
exactly is happening. The technique used was increase the exposure to
about 2.5 or 3 and then change the blend mode to multiplication.

Quality of the image seems to be improving a lot and lot more details
not visible in default setting of exposure seems to be coming up.
Notably haziness of the image reduces dramatically.

Multiplication mode is listed under darken modes so it makes sense to
increase the exposure before darkening to keep the brightness of image
about same. But I'm not able to figure out why haziness of the image
gets cleared up.

Any helpful hints will be really appreciated.

After you move the images to another location - right click on the
film
row or folder, select search and locate your images - the program
will
do the rest.

Also - if you work out of a shared disk (even an USB connected to a
router) DT does good work with the caching. It does fetch the raw

but after that works out from the cache quite a bit (just an idea).

As photo collection grows, so does disk usage to the point it becomes a

images are naturally broken.

Is there a way to remap the image to new path? If not, how do you handle

I did apply some xmp files accidentally on images and I got
warning/error from darktable -  history stack corrupted or or something
similar. It was an operator error - choosing wrong style for wrong image
- most probably difference was one was dng file and other jpg file.

It took couple of tries until results of downloaded file and xmp files
matched with what I was seeing on the pixls.us. Now I have a long task
of learning how each module affected and what changed and then play with
my images to see if I can improve it.

The tool - darktable is excellent and my goal is to learn. pixls.us is
phenomenal - really helpful to novices like me. I've seen almost all
videos by Bruce Williams and learned a lot - but because darktable
offers so much rich functionality, it can be overwhelming and confusing

changes and magic. I am learning a lot by downloading the images

https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/overview/sidecar-files/sidecar-import/

<https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/overview/sidecar-files/sidecar-import/>

seems to be most relevant. The problem I face is when I download the
image and corresponding xmp files, everyone names it differently
based
on their choice or completely inverse scenario where file is named as
exactly same by many. I have to remember to name it correctly and
save
it in right directory. Default browser saving format is also not very
friendly to darktable sidecar reading logic.

Is there a feature in darktable where I can just say, take this
xmp file
and apply it to the current image? I think this is similar to
creating
style from history stack, but source will be xmp file but could not
easily figure it out.

[darktable-user] Dark photos when printed

2021-03-05 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

darktable 2.4.1, Ubuntu 20.04

I am just a beginner and first time I tried printing some of photos I
had. Commercial service from typical drug store on the corner where you
can upload photos for printing was used. No calibration of my monitor or
anything except tinkering with few styles until preview and exported
image was acceptable.

After printing, photos look little dark - not too dark, but not as
bright as they show up on my monitor.  Most of the photos were captured
on sunny day outside.

I am trying to learn why this can be happening. It could be my laptop
monitor which is showing brighter than it should be or printing service
could be processing uploaded jpeg image.

Any thoughts or hints? Should I be tinkering with any other settings
such as color profiles so that photos don't look dark.

[darktable-user] Film strip in maps view

2021-02-22 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

On darktable 3.4.1

This could be operator error or an intentional feature or a bug. I could
not determine either way and looking for help. I tried reading
documentation about film strip at
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/module-reference/utility-modules/shared/filmstrip/
and that did not help me much, especially when it comes to map view.

Film strip seems to be using ctrl-click to select/unselect images. Just
clicking on a image is not selecting it. This behavior is different than
similar view, that is lighttable. Reading the manual told me to
ctrl-shift-a to reset the selecton, but should it reset when you just

I am trying to drag images to desired location by selecting all the
images and then tagging a set of images. I have to reset my selections
frequently for right tags for the images and it becomes interesting
exercise as behavior is different than lighttable view. In lighttable
view, clicking on the image resets selection, you can use ctrl click to
select/unselect image and shift-click allows you to select range of
images. Same combination does not seem to be working in film strip.

This could be a bug or intentionally build this way and I am trying to
understand the behavior and avoid goofs I am making.

If you don't think feature is not worthy of implementation, we can drop

After I refresh my C/C++ skills, skills used long time back, I might

I wouldn't want to comment on other's experience. Here is what I was

tips/hints welcome.

I was looking for portrait images. I could not find a way to do it in
UI. Darktable is aware of image orientation, but it's not accessible in
UI as far as I know. Besides it uses different values than standard exif
values, but comments in the code make it clear why it was done that way
and makes sense.

If I had access to query editor, I could have easily have a query and
don't have to wait for a feature that may or may not be implemented.

I'm trying to understand resistance to SQL query - as I see it,  it's a
view after all, it has list of images and should not care how it got the
list of images. As far as i can see current view is basically result of
SQL, either based on film role or tags or whatever. If you provide
opportunity people will use it in imaginative way, after all this tool
is used by many imaginative artists. Why constrain within the confounds
of UI?

I agree that SQL is not for everyone, but that does not mean other
developers can provide SQL that can do allow people to filter the way
they want or enhance functionality of already excellent tool. Not
everyone is able to contribute with C/C++ tools, but following linux
philosophy, any tool should be easily extendible by others without
significant changes in the original tool.

Thanks,

Niranjan

Because if none, then there's no need for direct SQL filtering. The
few power users who want to have advanced statistics or such from

2021-01-18 Thread Niranjan Rao
I respectfully disagree with SQL injection aspect. I'm aware of SQL
injection and damages it can cause. Problem can be addressed in multiple
ways.

 * darktable is single user database - that is data belongs to only one
user. There is no data leak across multiple users of the application.
 * Damaging database such as dropping/deleting rows/tables is certainly
possible, but it can be managed by read-only transactions or similar
   techniques.

I agree that SQL is not everyone's cup of tea or other preferred
beverage. That's why I said others can help forming the SQL. Essentially
goal is to come up with a result set of images that can be shown in
lighttable view. One way is to write the SQL that returns a list of
images based on given criteria. lighttable is essentially doing it after
removing the GUI sugar. If a custom SQL can return image list, lot of
problems can be easily solved - e.g. FAQ can maintain a list of approved
SQL queries that can show the results.

[darktable-user] Usage and modifying description/title metadata fields

Ubuntu 20.04, darktable 2.4.1

Apologies if this sounds really dumb question, but I am trying to figure
out what's the usage of fields like description/title. I could not

allows me to set the values.

If you set title and/or description, are there any other tools - may be
like web browser or file explorer like tools that can show the
information on mouse hover or something. I think it will really neat if
functionality already exists.

At least on Ubuntu, I did not see title/description displayed in default
image viewer or image properties even though it shows other information.

It looks darktable does support most of these under collect images

I think easiest way for developers might be to provide a raw SQL

I have never used lightroom hence the question.

Which exact search features are missing from darktable? I find collect
images module more than sufficient where you can manipulate various
and/or conditions to search/filter images.

With image data in proper SQL database, searching images should be
relatively easy to handle and darktable already allows many of the
searches. If there is data in database, it can be queried, if it's not
there, we can log feature requests for better cataloging.

Personally, I believe collect images module is least noticed module
and many don't see other features like tag hierarchy etc available. I
myself was unaware and started writing my own code until someone
kindly pointed existing features and told me how to use it.

I did face a challenge of collecting the images in portrait mode, but
quick look at database and help from others got me on the track. I
believe data is there, but priorities are on improving images, not on
searching images which can be achieved by external tools. Only gotcha

You may not need to tag them. Try this:
On the lighttable, using the 'collect images' module => 'hamburger'

predefined filters using metadata -> capture details -> aspect ratio
(less than, greater than or equal to 1). I'm on the master branch, but

[darktable-user] Best way to tag image from command line?

Greetings,

Generic question is can I tag the image from command line? Obvious
search engine searches have failed so far. I suspect lua script can do
it, but have not managed to put two and two together. I saw some mention
at https://www.darktable.org/lua-api/index.html#darktable_tags. If
someone can kindly provide example, I can add loop around the file list
very easily.

Specifically, I was looking for best way to find images in portrait mode
- or in general, any image that is not in landscape mode. I have the
complete image paths - built from querying darktable database and using
exiftool to crosscheck my results.

I have almost 1000 entries that I would like to be tagged.

GPS information on the backup sites I use. As far as I know, darktable

My usecase is as follows:

I copied bunch of raw images from my camera card. Asked darktable to
process it, uploaded my raw backups in my cloud. If I setup my GPS
ordinates in darktable, my cloud does not show it as image does not have
it. This is the problem I was trying to solve.

images. I need information in the images as many online tools show me the
location based on the geo information where my backups are.

However, I need to see the images first to decide which photo was captured
where and I use lighttable view to decide the files.

As far as I know, darktable never updates the original. The files are already
imported. Is there any easy way to re-read the location information from images
again? Sometimes it takes lot of time to reimport the images again.

[darktable-user] Changing the border of the selection in lighttable

2020-12-25 Thread Niranjan Rao

On darktable 3.2.1

In the lighttable mode, is it possible to change the border color of
selected items? Color difference in selected and unselected items is
very subtle in default darktable theme and depending upon my laptop's
monitor angle, sometimes there is no difference at all.

I suspect it's the following value as defined in css file. However
overriding the value in Settings/CSS tweaks does not work. I have not
tried restarting the darktable to see if it works.

@define-color thumbnail_selected_bg_color @grey_60;

Can someone provide me an example of what needs to be put in
Settings/CSS tweaks section to show my selections more prominently?

I have tried following

@define-color thumbnail_selected_bg_color white

@define-color thumbnail_selected_bg_color #FF

Check the export settings (lighttable, between the 'export selected'

alter your image?

[darktable-user] Export to website gallery and related questions

2020-11-26 Thread Niranjan Rao

On darktable 3.2.1 / Ubuntu 20.04

I played with "export to website gallery" feature. Before I start
tinkering around, I want to make sure these features already don't exist
when exporting in gallery format.

It does export, creates a presentation that is acceptable for my
personal use, but I would like to get some more image data when image is
exported. For me, generated html file does not show file name, even
though it's obviously using the images in html. Standard information
that gets displayed  in "Image information" of lighttable view along
with tags should be good.

If this is not available, is there any way to ask darktable to generate
this information while exporting in some sort programming friendly
format? Since the generated html already has json structure, I'm
assuming this feature exists somewhere.

I know about command line tool darktable-cli. Can I ask it to export
image thumb and main image on the same line as export to web gallery does?

Ultimate goal is to create enough data (image, thumbnail, image data,
tags etc) so that any gallery software can be easily adapted. I want to
generate a tag cloud too. If no such features exist, I have enough
skills to play with database and generate the information, but I would
rather not do it if official way exists as it will be using unofficial
information and will be subject to breakage.

Thanks,

Niranjan

[darktable-user] Snapshots question

2020-07-31 Thread Niranjan Rao

Darktable 3.0.2, Ubuntu 18.04

This question is probably ridicule worthy, but I am really facing
challenges many times. Official manual at
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/snapshots.html states that
snapshot is on left and right side current image.

I have seen this reversing many times and could not figure out. As a
matter fact currently, I have active image on left side and snapshot on
right hand side.

On my other computer, I have seen it appearing randomly at left or right
and have got completely confused.

Am I missing something or making a stupid mistake? To me current image
is whatever selected from history stack. I have seen it many times
getting reversed. Is there a key/mouse combination that changes left/right?

[darktable-user] How to find out style parameters/settings

2020-07-07 Thread Niranjan Rao

On darktable version 2.6.2/Ubuntu 18.04

I am playing and trying to understand how styles work. I did download
few styles from dtstyle.net and imported it. If I like the final product
after applying the style, I wanted to see it's done for each steps and
see which step(s) impact how. Editing the style does not show module
settings. Style text file has bunch of encoded data.

My current specific problem is one of the styles applies equalizer
module. When style is applied, module window shows kind of slanting band
with two straight vertical lines and two slanting horizontal lines. No
matter what I do with the module with my changes, I am not able to
achieve same settings. Module shows only configurable values of mix as
1.00 and blend as off.

I'm aware of show only active modules toggle. But it does not show
modules in the order it's applied. Is there a way to select the top most
module automatically as I navigate through history stack?

You probably tried this and were not happy, but just want to confirm.
Have you checked collect images in lighttable view? It does allow you to
search on various aspects and essentially does the same SQL others are
talking about - but from the safety of darktable. Once you have
selection, you can operate normally as you would otherwise do it. For
example you can easily specify tag="this" and ISO=that from the GUI.

I have not used 3.0, but I doubt if they have taken this kind of
functionality away.

Without knowing LUA scripts, most likely this kind functionality is
exposed somewhere in the scripts.

To me, it looks like Jpeg compression artifact. It's a high-res

tiff to see what the image actually looks like before compression?
If you are no artifacts in lossless files, try exporting at a higher
Jpeg quality setting, and, if you really need small files, use a
lower resolution instead of increasing compression (lowering quality).

I don't care about size as much. But kind of scratching my head as

I notice you didn't answer Kofa's question (cited below). <250k filesize for a
16 megapixel image means that the image is strongly compressed, and that can
induce artifacts. You have basically 1 byte to encode 64 pixels, that's 1 bit
for 8 pixels (or 24 bytes)... And I know that that's not how jpeg compression
works, but it indicates the amount of information that is lost.

I'd suggest trying less compression and/or enable dithering on export. Notice
how the 1.6 MB jpeg file of the giraffes does *not* show the banding in the
sky.
If I load that file in darktable and reexport to a smaller size (~250kb) I do
get the same banding you see, at a quality setting of 25-30%. Those are not
geometric patterns, btw, the bands follow intensity levels in the original
image.

If you need the small filesize, ask yourself if you really *need* a 16M image
for the exported version. For screen display, 1960*1080 (~3.5M pixels) is
usually enough, and that in itself is less than 25% of the original image. An
image reduced in size to 1080 height (full screen for me) at a quality setting
of 85% shows no banding, and the file size is ~160 kB (so less than your bad
jpg).

Remco.

To me, it looks like Jpeg compression artifact. It's a high-res photo,
yet only about 200 kB. Have you tried exporting into png or tiff to
see what the image actually looks like before compression? If you are
no artifacts in lossless files, try exporting at a higher Jpeg quality
setting, and, if you really need small files, use a lower resolution
instead of increasing compression (lowering quality).

[darktable-user] Artifacts in exported image

2019-11-13 Thread Niranjan Rao

Darktable version: 2.6.2 on Ubuntu 18.04

I am seeing patterns in the sky - kind of concentric circles for many of
the exported photos. Trying to understand if this is my camera
limitation or my camera settings, issue with my styles, issues with my
graphics card/hardware or bug in darkable.

I have uploaded raw file as well as exported image at following
location. Darkroom view does not show this pattern, but exported image
does show it. So far at least ten different images shot on different
times/days show same effect.

Thank you all for suggestions/pointers. Luckily/unluckily I got a

There are no extensions installed and developer tools did not help as I
get "Aw Snaps!" error from chrome. Its definitely somewhere in the
innards of chrome as Ubuntu also shows me the error about process
getting killed and asks me if I want to submit a bug. Other tabs work
fine though.

I have tried rexporting the file again - no luck. This file is smallest

Too many variables. Move your carefully setup profiles aside and start
browsers anew, with their default profiles, no custom settings, no
extensions. Try uploading your file, while viewing the process in
browsers' developer tools/consoles.

I understand, but these options need sudo rights. If someone wanted to
install without sudo rights, then configuring build script might be a
viable option.

As I said earlier, I have not built darktable itself, but have built (or

Anyways, happy that problem is solved.

BTW: There is no real need to provide build.sh with options. It will fall back
to the defaults set inside that script. Most notably:

   INSTALL_PREFIX_DEFAULT="/opt/darktable"
   BUILD_TYPE_DEFAULT="RelWithDebInfo"

Have a look at ./build.sh --help

Most of open source tools can have install directory mentioned on
command line during build time. It seems to be same case for darktable
and readme.md at github has an example which will (should) not need sudo
permissions.

You need to build with --prefix option or if you are executing cmake,
you need to have that variable (CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX) defined. I have
not checked darktable code, many tools programs embed the path at
compile time in the binaries generated. Default paths - meant for
standard distributions can be overridden with make variables or at
configuration time.

In my opinion it should not need sudo permissions.  Your example command
seems to be missing -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX as mentioned in readme.

[darktable-user] Extra sensitive mouse

image area, suddenly image flips or some parameters change as mouse
moves through area. On other computer I have to position pointer very
carefully and use scroll wheel to change the parameters.

As a result my images are getting some very interesting edits. Some
accidents were actually good - accidentally flipped/rotated the image in
the angle and madeit look better. Other times, I have to rush to
compress history stack.

I'm missing some obvious setting somewhere on the problematic machine? I

Have you read the user manual? Try section 3.4.4
Have you googled for "darktable remove grain"
That turns up a couple of videos.

I do note that the file you uploaded has a slight problem. Some of the settings

download and scan I get an error.
Perhaps you could check and post the EXIF values from the original.

other places.

[darktable-user] A way to redeem myself

2019-04-07 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

Version 2.6.1 on Ubuntu 18.04

I am just a beginner and learning my way around. I read a lot, watch
video tutorials, play around the knobs on camera and in darktable only
on "safe unimportant" photos. Otherwise I stay safe on auto mode.

Yesterday was a special day and she was all dressed up. I forgot my
camera was not on auto mode. Results are all noisy and grainy and my
limited experience does not help me to cleanup the results. Thankfully I
have some photos from my phone camera which are looking better than my
Canon camera photos.

At this point, except from camera being on Av mode, I don't remember any
other settings such as exposure changed from default. I did turn on the
flash as camera prompted me to turn on the flash even if there was
plenty of light in the room.

I have uploaded one CR2 file at
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CUTt7tEo0rmKwP99akAmJaV8dpJr6TBz/view?usp=sharing

Is there a way to redeem myself? If you can save the day, please let me
know the steps so that I can apply to other pictures.

Thanks in advance,

Niranjan

[darktable-user] Creating HDR images

2018-04-10 Thread Niranjan Rao

On Ubuntu 16.04, darktable 2.4.1

I have experimented with "selected images/ create HDR" and happy with
the results. I have setup my camera to do bracketing and I select three
raw images from the camera manually and click on create HDR button.

Is there anyway to automate the process - may be with the aid of lua
script or something as it's getting tedious to do the same thing for
large number of images.

I was thinking some command line script where I can pass three file
names to darktable and darktable will create HDR files from these. I can
(relatively) easily write a script where I can get the file triplets,
but don't know how ask darktable to combine these three and create HDR file.

Is there any way to specify where HDR output files will be created?
Otherwise, I am getting lot of duplicate looking images in my lighttable
view.

Is there a setting somewhere I can flip views in lighttable to show

[darktable-user] Darktable styles

2016-10-05 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

As a new comer to raw image development, I figured the best way to learn
is to look at what others have done and see what I like. I found a
tar.gz file somewhere on the web that contains 46 styles.

Few questions:

1. Personally I don't think it's possible, but want to double check. If
I find darktable styles on some random web site and apply those styles,
will I face any security issues? In other words is there a possibility
of getting hacked while using imported styles. As far as I could see
styles are XML documents and just set the parameters of the modules and
contain no executable code.

2. I would like to apply the style and export the results and then
compress history stack, apply next style and repeat. My initial goal is
to find out what style I like and see how that style is built and
experiment with style modules. Can I script this - apply and export part
and loop around all available styles? It becomes cumbersome to repeat
same process for all 46 styles and lot of images.

[darktable-user] Noisy exports

2016-08-24 Thread Niranjan Rao

Greetings,

I am new to raw image development and trying to figure out what I am
doing wrong.

My main problem seem to be stemming out from the fact that when I export
the image, it does not look like image in darkroom screen. I am trying
to process images generated by Canon PowerShot SX60 HS. Exported image
always felt more noisy or grainy.

A little bit of experimentation and tinkering of many knobs, I figured
that exported image quality seems to be function of size. If I leave
exported size to 0, darktable exports in default size (in my case, it's
4768 X 3516), exported images look grainy. If I export in smaller size -
say 1600, they look much nicer.

Is this normal - having noise in default sized exported image and
looking cleaner in smaller image? Is there anything I can do to address
this issue?

Alternatively, what would be good or usual size to export the image? I
am just a home user of camera and darktable, rarely print my images and
images are used only for viewing by family and sharing across various
mediums such as facebook and WhatsApp.

I on Ubuntu 16.04, using darktable version 2.0.3 from standard ubuntu
repositories. I am using standard Ubuntu image viewer to view exported
image.

Best,

Niranjan
