Hi Pippin

I saw you mentioned VPN control on another thread and would like to add
a feature request to this.

When using a VPN is it possible to have a optional lock to only control
and display the iPeng player instance ?

I had a nasty experience of controling my "Main" system by accident from
abroad !

I wont go into details (boring) but nearly killed my flatmate !

The one thing that has changed with watchOS 2 actually (not 4, that's
just the first version where we support it) is that you can indeed use
the crown.
What has not changed, though, is the network performance of watchOS. You
may be able to scroll through a list faster, but if that list takes a
minute to load the experience is still not a good one.

I plan to add browsing favorites and Siri Shortcuts which gives a bit
more capability to the watch but full browsing of long lists... probably
not.

One mistake you must not make on watchOS is assuming that just because
Apple does something on the watch it's something 3rd party apps can do
as well. Apple still doesn't seem to use the watchOS SDK, their watch
Apps do a lot of things 3rd party apps can't do, getting priority for
their network transfers being one of these things...

That's a "Glance", a functionality watchOS had until watchOS 3, it since
got removed in favor of the dock and the control center.

Tap on the title.
Force-Touch brings up player control - that's pretty much a watchOS
standard (the whole Force-Touch context menu thing is a standard watchOS
control).
Long-Press does nothing.

I think it was WatchOS4 that started allowing apps to run directly on
the watch so that is a bit out of date but at the same time with no
keyboard you can't really input text so searching would be out... It
*is* space constrained but it would be nice to be able to queue up an
album or playlist and browse using the digital crown to scroll lists...

Regarding that blog post though, the first screenshoot is showing album
art with track info, but I can't seem to find that view. It looks like
each "page" in that view is a track, but the new app looks more like the
2nd screenshot, just 2 pages and no album art. I can get the album art
up by swipe or long press (can't remember which - I think longpress
brought up player control) but I like the 1st screenshot more where you
get a thumb of album art and track info. It mentions that its a
"glance" view but it may not be applicable in WatchOS5 that blog
post is from 2015 and WatchOS1 afterall.

I recently purchased the new Apple Watch 4 so have had a chance to try
the new watch app.

It seems fairly basic, but I just might not be using it correcly. Is
there a guide explaining its use, especially the latest versions for
watchos5?

Specifically is there anyway to browse and add music from your LMS (or
spotty plugin), or are you limited to manipulating whatever is in the
now playing queue?

Well, you could try to use it through the UPnPBridge plugin.
The results will vary, though, depending on the quality of the UPnP/DLNA
implementation.
Most of them are not very good, the reason vendors use UPnP is usually
that they lack the software competency to implement a decent protocol so
they just use some chipset vendor‘s standard implementation.

Things like multiroom sync will most definitely not work.

DLNA/UPnP really is a bad protocol.

iPeng has long been my Goto for controlling my LMS based music library.
Time marches on though and I can foresee in the next five years that my
Squeezeboxes will begin to fail after MANY years of flawless service.
While there are options for replacing Squeezeboxes on the market, there
are MANY MORE options for HiFi streaming devices that are UPnP
compatible, such as the newly announced Bel Canto e.one Stream. I would
love to be able to control a UPnP streamer with iPeng, is there a way to
do this?

Re: [slim] Announcing iPeng 9 - Support for iPad Multitasking, iPad Pro and more

2018-09-30 Thread pippin

Like every year during fall, Apple have presented their new devices and
thus laid the foundation for changes to iPeng. Once again, that kept us
busy to deliver the best design and functionality.

For the iPhone XS Max, the challenge was to adapt to the truly huge
(6.5-inch!) screen. The Apple Watch Series 4, whose design Apple – by
ist own words – has not only “evolved”, but “transformed”, also comes
with a larger display and rounded corners, which made design adjustments
necessary.

iPeng now also supports the following new features on the Apple Watch:

multicolored complications
more formats for complications
implementation of the curved corner complication design
The new version is now available as a free update in the App Store.
Another update for iPeng UE will follow shortly.

IT’S JUST “IPENG” AGAIN

One last note on the product name of iPeng, because there are news here
as well: From now on you will find the app in the App Store under
“iPeng” again, not under “iPeng 9”: Since iPeng Classic got removed from
the App Store by Apple, we decided to return iPeng to it’s original
product name since the distinction is no longer necessary.

And as always: Have fun with the app!

Re: [slim] Announcing iPeng 9 - Support for iPad Multitasking, iPad Pro and more

2018-06-01 Thread pippin

IPENG 9’S APPLE WATCH APP GETS AN UPDATE.
Now, with iPeng 9.5, we have updated to the watchOS 3/4 platform.

USE THE DIGITAL CROWN TO CHANGE THE VOLUME
While watchOS 1 apps are running on your iPhone, watchOS 2 and newer
lets the app run directly on the watch.

The most immediate change you will notice after the update is that iPeng
can now finally make use of the digital crown to change the player
volume. This allows you to change the volume much faster than before by
simply turning the crown. To illustrate this, the volume indicator is
now symbolized by a (round) dial instead of a bar.

USE COMPLICATIONS TO QUICKLY LAUNCH THE APP FROM THE WATCH FACE
Another new feature is Complications, which you can add to your watch
face. Depending on the watch face and the type of complication you
select, it will show an icon for the currently selected player and the
player name or the current volume.

Tapping the complication directly launches the app.

OTHER CHANGES IN THE WATCHOS APP
But the switch to the new watchOS versions also comes with some
downsides: Apple no longer lets us bundle the original watchOS 1 app
with iPeng, so iPeng 9.5 now requires your watch to run at least under
watchOS 3.

Also, while performance on the new Apple Watch Series 3 is pretty good,
the app can feel a bit slower on the original Apple Watch (“Series 0”).
That is because the processor on this old watch is slow and the app can
no longer use the resources of your iPhone.

USE THE “MUSIC, WALK WITH ME”-PLUGIN FOR QUICKSWITCH
One more feature seeing a change is “QuickSwitch” when selecting a
player on the watch. So far, the feature allowed you to move your music
(the current playlist) directly from one player to another. This now
requires the “Music, Walk With Me”-plugin to be installed on your
Logitech Media server and will no longer work with MySqueezebox.com. The
reason is that the feature requires continuous communication with the
server over several commands, which isn’t possible in a reliable and
quick way on watchOS. The old app could do this by calling the main
iPeng app on iOS, but since watchOS 2 this is no longer possible.

You can install the plugin simply from the “Settings->Plugins” section
in your server’s web interface.

Overall, if you have one of the newer Apple Watch models, iPeng 9.5 will
make iPeng on Apple Watch much more usable and useful, you get really
quick actions and volume changes, we hope you will enjoy it!

I don't understand this.
Could we also please continue this discussion in the service thread?
This is an announcement thread, I don't want people to have to wade
through pages of discussions, that's what that service thread is for.

This one is for discussion of new features and maybe feature requests.

Maybe that's it.
I don't really think it's something I invented because where I deviate
from LMS defaults it's either because I follow Apple's (they use
alphabetical ordering) or my personal preferences and I used to use
alphabet sorting, too, so I wouldn't know why I should have chosen
something else as the default.

That said: since I do so many new installations I tend to use the
default settings in iPeng more and more and I started to find the
chronological ordering does make some sense, too, because often you
think about early/late albums of an artist when searching for something.
The problem for me is just that at least half of my library doesn't have
the dates correctly tagged

Interesting. Has this changed at some point? I thought the default was
"artflow" when I first implemented this (granted, some 7 years ago or
so) and while "artflow" is "artist, year, album" for a given artist
that obviously translates to "year, album" which is what iPeng uses
unless you change that sort setting.

Might be worth it to change the default of that switch if the server
default is different.

Which LMS version is this?
This sounds like a result of that recent change I made (actually in
9.0.2) to fix missing artwork on some installations.
iPeng now uses a different ID as the default for the artwork ("coverid")
which is supposed to be correct but older server version (with "older"
being older than a few weeks ago) had an issue where the lookup of the
artwork using the coverid only worked the second time.
Michael fixed this in LMS 7.9, not sure about 7.8.1 and 7.7.6 but I'd
think the fix is there, too.

>
> If you switch focus to another app and back to iPeng all art in the now

Yep. That's normal. iPeng doesn't want to get shut down in the
background so it's being a good iOS citizen and releases the artwork
from memory when being suspended. This means it need to be re-loaded
from the disc-cache when you return.
The alternative would be to keep it in memory but that increases the
risk of the App being shut down (iOS shuts down the Apps using the most
memory in the background first) and a complete cold-start takes much
longer... Artwork re-loading should be much faster in 9.0.3 than before,
though.

Actually are you talking about the playlist on the NowPlaying screen on
iPad? That's indeed a change, need to look up what's happening there.

Normally the playlist actually doesn't update (the normal one still
doesn't) when you leave the App and return so this shouldn't be.

Album lists still clear and refresh because the main menu structure gets
refreshed (NowPlaying shouldn't if it's not expired).

I think this is probably something happening since 9.0. I had to do
a,lot of changes to the state model because on iPad now there are a lot
of incidences where the screen format can change while the App is
sleeping and NowPlaying is a modal screen which doesn't get notified of
everything. Still should not be required.

Re: [slim] Announcing iPeng 9 - Support for iPad Multitasking, iPad Pro and more

2015-12-06 Thread pippin

The latest iPeng update, 9.0.3, comes with two improvements:

First, there is a new "All Albums" submenu of "Browse Years". It shows
you a list of your albums, sorted by the year of the initial release. It
is fully cached and indexed by decade so that you can quickly travel
through time (see image).

The other improvement concerns the artwork loading performance. Since
version 7 artwork loading had some built-in speed limit in iPeng to work
around issues with older devices under iOS 7.0. Through extensive
testing we know now that under iOS 8/9 and on newer devices this is no
longer necessary, so we have changed the loading algorithm, which should
result in some significant speed improvements on newer devices as soon
as the artwork is cached on your iPhone or iPad.

There is no change WRT this. The only change is that the index is now by
decades wherever a player list is sorted by year, the sorting itself
isn't changed.
These (sub) menus always have been sorted by year first, it's the server
default, too.
If you don't want sorting by year for album list below an artist there
is (and always has been) an option for this in iPeng's settings: "Sort
Albums by Name".

Since a few days ago Apple has now started shipping the iPad pro and if
you haven't seen it yet or have one and haven't seen iPeng 9 on it, yet,
here are some impressions.

It's seriously gigantic. So gigantic that you can have a fully
functional iPeng (no compact mode) next to another App in full-screen
mode and it's almost the same size as iPeng in portrait mode on a
regular iPad.
Or if you run iPeng exclusively, it allows you to have the "pinned"
inline playlist next to your content in portrait mode (landscape only
for smaller iPads) and show artwork with the "pinned" playlist in
landscape mode.

It's really like a huge media center giving you full access to all these
different aspects of using your Squeezebox simultaneously and without
compromise.

Oh... And if you use iPeng Playback: with it's four builtin speakers it
offers an incredible sound for a tablet!

The images below are thumbnails. Yes, it's so gigantic these are
actually just thumbnails...

OK. Let me take my best shot at convincing you

- Erland's awesome Trackstat plugin supports a 10 point rating scale.
More compatibility with that would be great.
- Trackstat dynamic ratings create ratings that would display better
  with a finer-grained star control
- While I know that much of the world is increasingly focused on
streaming, the Squeezebox community is full of people with carefully
curated and tagged collection of many thousands of songs. 5 points
don't really cut it for such collections.
- If people only have ratings that are a multiple of 20, it will
display exactly like it does now, but for people who have
finer-grained ratings it will display better
- Working better with Last.FM is certainly a plus, esp. in Squeezebox
  community
- IIUC, iTunes displays half stars for Last.FM
- We already know it works great on SqueezeCommander. There are zero
posts complaining about that. Admittedly, there are none lauding it
(although I am about to add one, because I love it), but people are
much more likely to complain about things they don't like.
- While it is technically "more complicated," I am having trouble
understanding how anyone could find it confusing. My guess is people
who don't care about it won't even notice.
- If you wanted, you could make it a setting like trackstat does.
People who don't want half star will never even worry about it

My bottom line is that while it's not a world-changing feature (although
it's important to me, so I'd be happy to make a donation to help support
it), there are a bunch of upsides, and I personally don't see much, if
any, of a downside (I know some will disagree).

To do away with a common myth: iTunes does NOT support half-star
ratings!
iTunes shows average ratings for albums which can be half-star-ratings
but you can NOT set a half-star rating in iTunes.

iPeng - like iTunes - only allows setting of ratings for tracks, on a
scale from 0-5. Aggregate ratings for albums can be shown in TrackStat.

Just wanted to say thanks for continuing to develop this app.

I bought my first Squeezebox back in 2003 or so. And have had more than

I use both an actual Squeezebox (Touch) and a plug computer hacked with
Vortexbox VAMP image.

It is the iPeng app for the family ios devices that makes the magic. I
am able to grab any of their iPhone, iPad, iPad mini or even my old
iTouch and adjust accordingly. I even have in app streaming for FLAC on
the iTouch.

Great app, thanks again!

Re: [slim] Announcing iPeng 9 - Support for iPad Multitasking, iPad Pro and more

2015-10-31 Thread pippin

The other way around.
It will start primarily as a player, probably with basic controls like
favorites.
I plan to add full browsing eventually but it's cumbersome compared to
an iPhone.

The lack of a touch screen makes for very bad remote controls.
Especially for admin stuff. You have no idea how often I have wanted to
throw that remote at the next wall when I had to enter all my
credentials again through that finicky text input.
Try to use a Squeezebox Radio as a remote and you get an idea of how the
thing feels.

No, the Apple TV NEEDS a remote control, it's not one by itself.

Also... There's no background mode on Apple TV so an App has to run in
the foreground to be active.
Apple plans to use the Apple TV as a hub for HomeKit but that's just
using their own, OS-integrated technologies, there not a lot App
developers can add on the device itself here.

(Random thought, feel free to disregard)

I was thinking of iPeng on the new appletv (although I don't have a tv,
only a video projector)...
Are you going to give it more the personality of a controller (a la
beosound 5), or will it be more of a player?

Somehow I feel the physical presence of the large screen + remote +
wired networking would allow for a great whole-house controller... Are
you finally taking over the complete LMS gui (= including admin) this
time ??

I totally understand your point, but I was wondering with Siri
integration in the new Apple TV, can we get searches inside content
known to Apps? I get the impression that voice control is meant to
compensate for the lack of mechanical keyboard for the use-cases that
Apple wants to support. Some possibilities come to mind here, although
much easier said than done!

Yes, search integration is something that will help a bit and I'm going
to do that in iOS 9, too.
But it's just search and it only works for known data. I'm not even sure
adding a whole list of albums is feasible, tracks probably not.
But no radio, no remote services, nothing that iPeng presents as a menu,
no context menu information and no controls that are not present on the
remote, it's still quite a lot that's missing for a proper remote.

There's another issue with Siri: it only properly works in English. Yes,
it supports other languages, too, but the problem is it's not
multi-lingual. So if I set it to German and then try to search for an
album with an English name I first have to figure out what Siri thinks
how a German pronunciation of that title would sound like,
And if I set it to English I can no longer find German albums or artists
or e.g. Locations (ok, navigation is probably less of an issue on the TV
as on the phone).
This really restricts Siri's usefulness outside English speaking
countries.

No, when browsing does not make sense. As the hifi subscription user
assume he/her gets CD quality. And such information can of cause only be
detected while playing.

Yes, iPeng shows the streaming quality after pressing to menu items. So
yes, I'm requesting on the main window or both. Somewhere on the top.
(Similar to the Auralic app).

If this is only of interest for 1 % of the users, then what you are
saying is that only about 1 % of the users has a hi-fi subscription.
Really ? I was expecting a higher prosentage of the iPeng was hi-fi
subscribers. (As this only will serve those, and those that does not
have control over their local files).

The idea is to easy see that you are not getting the expected sound
quality. This will be even more important when or if MQA is implemented,
as only a few tracks will be available in the beginning. 5000 has been
said.

Well anyway you already refused main screens. Even if it was adding a
color that only those with hi-fi subscription could see.
Just have to see what info screen brings then. Not sure that helps, as
that also may need two touches on my iPad for every song from main
screen. Well it will probably save me the long press.

Thanks for a quick replay.
Still hoping for a reconsiddering :D

No, but for most people listening to the music is still more important
than monitoring the performance of their service provider. I do have
several HiFi service subscriptions but the only cases when I actually
look into these parameters is when I want to check whether the right
account is activated and for that the context menu is just fine.

I mean if you don't get a FLAC stream, then what? Get angry at
TIDAL? Not enough time for that in my life :) I would check if it sounds
murky but for that, again, the context menu is fine. In most cases it
turns out to be a bad mix, not the stream format.

I can only re-iterate it: showing already TOO MUCH information is the
single most frequent complaint I get about iPeng, I can't clutter this
even more, every time I add something I get tons of complaints. Just
check today's comments in the iPeng service thread because I added a
section divider for the CD number if you want to get a feeling.

Oh, and there's another point: that information is totally unreliable :)
Only the player _really_ knows what it's getting and then has to tell
the server which in turn tells iPeng... this often breaks.

>
> Still hoping for a reconsiddering :D

As I said: some day there will be a nice, crowded, configurable
alternative screens showing bitrate, sample rate, BPM, file size, URL,
file format, comments, year, genre, biographies, CD number, 10-step
ratings and all these other things people ask for to get on the main
screen. You will be able to permanently use it as a screen saver like
you can use the lyrics screen saver now, it's almost like the main page
and that's it then.

We have discussed this before.

I just like to encourage you again to have the streaming quality
available somewhere in the main page. Not hidden under the more info
option.
Mp3, Flac (16/24 and 44/48/96/192), and if MQA is beeing implemented,
that also of cause.

I understand this will be something most usefull for those of us having
Tidal/Wimp hi-fi plan.
I often find music I'm playing only to be available in MP3. Also usefull
for your ripped or phurchased tracks.

If you argue it's hard to find a place, you could even use a color code
in the play symbol as an example.

Thank you, really good to hear that you like iPeng so much.

A watchOS 2 App is definitely also on the list of things to come with
iPeng 9 but since improvements were not as big as expected, especially
if you use the App a lot (so that it doesn't have to be cold started) I
thought Multitasking and AppleTV are more urgent for now.

Regarding services I'm less optimistic (see my remarks in the various
ickStream threads). Spotify already runs well on LMS but some others
(technically even Spotify) are really reluctant to have their
implementations exposed on an open source system. End-to-end security is
a big issue for them.

Wow, this is exciting! Thanks for the new iPeng!

Since you mention that you are planning additional releases, I hope it's
not off-topic for me to make two suggestions for your excellent product
(ignore if it is off-topic).

- A rich "now playing" screen with comment field, lyrics, tags like
performers/conductors, album review, etc. It feels like most of the
Now Playing screens are optimized to view from a distance, but I
suspect most people have their iPad right on their lap and would like
to have to go through the menu for common fields.
- Have a rating control that supports half stars for 10 pt ratings.
This works very well on SqueezeCommander.

Not meaning to be critical but hope you appreciate the input.

Thanks again for your continued improvements!

Re: [slim] Announcing iPeng 9 - Support for iPad Multitasking, iPad Pro and more

2015-10-28 Thread pippin

On #1: Yea, I've long since planned to make a more configurable
alternative to the Lyrics screen saver. Some day AppleTV adds some
motivation here :)

#2... This is one of these features I don't know... Arguments
against it: I don't get it, it makes the whole thing more complex and
there are so few people using it
Also... I'm desperately trying to make the whole rating systems mess
_less_ complex, not more, to have a chance to actually add it to Apple
Watch, too. Problem is. right now there are like 4 dimensions for this:

- Rating stars for local tracks
- "love" for remote tracks (theoretically also for local ones but you
have to use the context menu)
- Add to Favorites
- "star" for Spotify (and theoretically other services)

Maybe Last.fm no longer is a thing but I know a lot of users still use
it (more than 10-scale ratings).

Ans how to get all that onto just one button...

But yes, we'll see, it should be possible but I'm not totally convinced,
yet.
