Right. Time is short for us to write a better documentation

I was able to understand where
xmlhelptemplate.ott file is located in fact. But I had no idea where I am
supposed to find maintransform.xml and allfiles.tree files.

If, as indicated, you get the extension from
http://dev-www.libreoffice.org/helpauthoring/

Then all you need is to install the extension and all filters and
templates will be at hand. You will get a new menu entry on the main
menu bar.

But as we aleady know, the extension has some glitches that requires an

I know that these files are not required. But as far as I understand, it

Could you explain this issue to me, please?
Is there any possibility compile only help files without compiling the whole
program in order to check how they would look like in the end ?

If you have your build working with the Helpcontent, all you need is to
issue the command make in the helpcontent2/ folder

once finished, you just invoke soffice from instdir/program anf press F1.

 Thank you in advance.

[libreoffice-documentation] Help Contents Authors: Help Authoring in TDF wiki

2016-06-14 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello

I have ported the book on Help Authoring for OpenOffice to the TDF wiki[1].

I did it because the only source for authoring LibreOffice help pages is
a PDF file written in 2006 [2]. The book was converted to wiki and the
contents is expected to be the same, but we want to improve our Help
system with new features that we need for LibreOffice. These pages will
handle the necessary documentation.

[libreoffice-documentation] HelpContent (localhelp) authoring documetation available in our wiki

2016-06-23 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi

For those interested in authoring contents for the help pages, I have
ported the only documentation available on XHP files to the wiki.

The objective is to allow additions or contributions by the community
to the XHP-specific documentation, when new features are proposed and
implemented. The documentation also explains how the local help works in
LibreOffice, when you press the help button in a dialog or when you
press F1.

The book can be acessed in the following URL:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/HelpContentAuthoring

If you are already skilled in autoring help contents, you may help us to
update its contents, mark obsolete exerpts, adjust wiki links and more.
It is a an on-going process.

Kind regards.

I'm no wizzard of web technology so I had to start the long march with
the first step which is the proof of concept. In this particular case
the difference between a online and local help service is a change in
the protocol (from html:// to file://, which I had not solved yet) and
all the rest is the same.

On the wikihelp, I don't think it has to be abandonned. "Au contraire",
it has matured and it works. Let's stay with the wikihelp, until the
other solution proves better.

[libreoffice-documentation] FORECAST.ETS functions

2016-03-09 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi All

I just submitted new help pages for FORECAST.ETS.* Calc fucntions and
they were quickly approved by Caolán.

I also experimentally loaded all help files in a temporary web server,
and tweaked the XSLT to display in a broswer.

You can navigate in http://hc3.edx.srv.br and beyond to see the help
pages almost as if they were opened in the localhelp (same styles BTW).

So the new functions can be seen from here:

http://hc3.edx.srv.br/text/scalc/01/func_forecastetspimult.xhp

Later, we will have a TDF website to accomodate this experiment.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] FORECAST.ETS functions

2016-03-09 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi Peter

Good to know, but puzzling. But on Firefox, Chrome and Rekonq in Ubuntu,
the pages displays OK. I know it does not display on MS Edge as well,
when I tested.

If you get plain text, it think the browser could not do the style
transformation (XSLT) that changes the xhp files into html. I don't know
if this is a config of Iceweasel.

If one wants to hack the pages and transformations just issue

wget http://hc3.edx.srv.br/tt.zip

and upload + unzip into the / of a webserver.

[libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started 5.1

2016-04-07 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello

In the last weeks I updated the first 4 chapters of the 5.0 Getting
Started book to the 5.1 version and placed them in the 5.1 Draft folder
for revision. The files are with Track changes enabled so it will be
easy to see the changes.

The contents addition are moderately deep in details, bearing that this
is a Getting Started book.

It will be important to revise the contents and the English and give a
feedbak on the job already done.

Thank you in advance

http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/getting-started/draft-lo-5.1

Note: The chapters are uploaded, if don't see them then there is an
issue on permissions I need to fix.

You only add files that are not yet under git control (e.g. new files).
If you modified an existing file under git control you will see the
differences with

- git diff (will show the diff between the edited file and the one in
the repository)

- git status (will tell you what files have been modified and what file
you have in your workspace that are not under git control)

git status gives me exactly the same as before,Obviously I'm doing
> something wrong, but can't see what it is. Do I have to type the entire path
> & file name into the git add command?

To submit your changes you must "commit" them to your local copy of git.

git commit file1 file2 file3...
git commit -a (=all modified files that are under git controlled tree)

An editor will open to put your remarks on the changes you did. The
chosen editor depends on your git settings.

Once you save the contents and quit the editor, git commits the changes
in your local copy.

To submit your changes for revision, use git push (you must get a login
in the LO gerrit service.
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/gerrit )

In summary, it is not that easy for the neophyte. But come to
#libreoffice-dev, #libreoffice-doc in Freenode IRC so we can help you on
the fly.

Although HelpAuthoring has evolved a lot recently and is very usable it
still has some rough edges.

If you edit existing help files you don't need to set the document root,
it is already set for the old root.

P.S. Since I also had all the same issues as you in the begining, I
always save the changed files in a separate folder when I cross an issue
 in git/gerrit/logerrit/helpauthoring that I don't uderstand.

I hope this help you a bit

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started 5.1

2016-04-07 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello Andrew, All

In ODF Authors site, you can get the writing style guide in

 Home / LibreOffice / English / Resources for Contributors / Ch5 Style
Guide

I think it worth to all authors to follow it.

Exerpt:

Writing style
The following list summarizes our preferred writing style. Some of these
points are discussed in more detail in the tips for writers, reviews,
and editors starting on page 6.

* Use short, simple, easy-to-understand words and sentences. Be concise
and clear.

* Write in active voice, using passive voice only when necessary or
appropriate. A case of appropriate passive voice is when the focus of
the sentence is on the receiver of an action whose doer is obvious or is
not important. For example, The File dialog box is displayed is OK.

* Use the present tense, using future tense only when necessary or
appropriate. Try to make your descriptions timeless. For example, write
The File dialog box is displayed, rather than The File dialog box will
be displayed. Use future tense only when one event is necessarily later
than another. For example, If you use styles, your documents will be
easier to maintain.

* Avoid over-using you. For example, instead of saying if you want to
have table headers repeat on a new page, you need to do yyy, say to have
table headers repeat..., do yyy.

* When appropriate (as in instructions), use the imperative mood. For
example, instead of you should not use slang, say do not use slang.

* In circumstances where the only alternative to you is the passive
voice, use you. For example, instead of in this window xxx can be done,
say in this window you can do xxx.

* Use gender-neutral language, but don’t use awkward phrases like he or
she to do so. See page 8 for some examples.

Variations of English

For consistency, when writing the user guides we are following US
English spelling conventions and UK English punctuation conventions.

See also “Punctuation” on page 6.
You can use other spelling or punctuation conventions when writing other
documents.

Regards

Olivier

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Use of "allow to" in documentation

2016-04-13 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello Peter

Are you refering to help content or Guide Books?

On Guide books, there is no need for bugzilla.

On help contents, then it worth to note that HC is translated into
several languages. A change in the English string due to a style
improvement will put the string in fuzzy state, forcing the translators
to review the string. This is not always fun for them, because each
language has its style and the change in English may not apply for the
target language (I speak for myself because I am a translator). So in
case of HelpContent, I recomend proceeding changes of style only when
the help file is being touched by a content update, to prevent a massive
batch of string review.

And to answer your question, no need for bugzilla for style changes,
only for content change, update or creation.

Kind regards

Olivier

You can get the history of the file in Opengrok:

http://opengrok.libreoffice.org/history/help/source/text/shared/01/ref_pdf_export.xhp

The help content has gaps in contents and updates since long time and
these gaps are progressively being closed by our eforts to deliver a
consistent and precise documentation for users. It however does not
happen in a finger snap, unfortunately.

Hello Peter

some remarks
1)
git status: Strange... the modified file should have the full path listed

modified: path/to/file/filename.xhp

2)
git commit -m "3rd party"

You must give the name of the file you modified for commit. That is
git commit -m "3rd party" file1 file2 file3...

3)
git add help

This "help" stuff is already been under git control, no need ot add it
again.

4)
git status
Same as 1.

"git diff" will list the changes you did since last "git pull"

There is a wikipage that shows the tasklist for the Guides[1].

I see that the GS guides are quite updated and have been carried well
given the resource limitations.

The modules guides concerns me because they are lagging behind
LibreOffice development.

For these modules guides I plan to write a wiki page with the topics x
version that are missing. That way we will have a roadmap on producing
contents, that will come along the update of the existing guides.

If there are objections to this initiative, please let me know (It may
be a very large job to carry).

[libreoffice-documentation] Missing documentation wiki page

2016-03-21 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello

I have created a wiki page - and Dennis Roczek make it look pretty - to
collect the features in LibreOffice not (yet) covered by the Guides.

It is currently a work in progress, and I expect a couple of weeks more
to have it stuffed with significant information.

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Documentation_missing

I'd like to invite the community to add information and make it useful
to help all in making the Guides up to date.

Authors will appreciate to pick a entry of this wiki page and write
about to add to our Guides. A by-product of this work will be source to
also complete LO helpcontent.

Thank you

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Help-files: Large-scale 'cosmetic' changes

2016-03-31 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello Peter

If you are comfortable with the help files, then the bug#80430 [1] has a
list of missing help files that LibreOffice need.

Everything written for the help files can (and will) be reused in the
Guides books and vice versa, modulo some adjustments. There is a big
overlap of contents between the two media.

Contents for documentation, either text or media is much needed at the
moment. Pick one of the open blocking bugs listed in [1] and write a
text document covering the topic. I must admit there is a game of
googling around to get the sources of the topic, in order to compose a
usefull help page.

Kind regards

Olivier

No impertinence. All projects and efforts are welcome, but there is
little to gain with repetition of work if resources are in short.

We already have a set of books on LibreOffice: In-depth module guides
and a Getting Started guide. They were written with the best practices
in word processing (we taste our own dog food). These books however need
update to the latest version of LibreOffice, and this is a large
project per se. We also have a process of authoring books on LibreOffice
that is documented as well.

But books and processes are not carved in stone, never. We will
appreciate your experience and advise on how to improve our content and
processes.

Our documenting process is available in ODF Authors website

http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/resources-for-contributers

We will be glad to know your thoughts on it.

ODF Authors has many books awaiting to be updated to release 5.1 of
LibreOffice. Some are as old das version 3.x.

One important note: Our LibreOffice books are source for many
translations worldwide. Our processes and content must consider this fact.

Write me offline if you need an login for ODFAuthors.

Software development is not tied to documentation avaliability. We lag
here. But with resources, it is perfectly possible to have books and
software synchronized at launch date.

[libreoffice-documentation] Help contents writers and authors... this may help you

2016-04-26 Thread Olivier Hallot
HI

As some of you know already, I have found a way to have the helpcontent
displayed in a browser (all except MS Edge, which does not seem to like
XML+XSLT).

Although it is highly experimental, it nevertheless allows to read and
browse pages more easily (I think) than the local help or the wikihelp.

It has limitations and advantages, and is work in progress:

- Preservation of the look and feel (same css)
- easy navigation (backward, forward) using the browser nav buttons
- easier reading
- a rough index was created from entries, but unsorted
- Search the index with browser search function
- easy display of pages: just put the xhp page in the URL of the browser
- information on the xhp page and module displayed
- en-US only at the moment.

Access: http://vm173.documentfoundation.org

I uploaded the master helpcontent yesterday night.

Enjoy.

The reporsitory in opengrok has the latest changes (we call it master)
and will be the help content of LibreOffice 5.2 later this year. When
you pulled the help content with git, you downloaded the same content as
displayed in opengrok.

The distributed text is from release 5.1 or lower, which means that you
see differences between releases. If the forthcomming release 5.2 is
worse than the distributed release, we did it wrong.

If you want to check the latest content, you can download and install
the nightly builds of LibreOffice.

http://vm173.documentfoundation.org has the help content XHP file
directly rendered in the browser. Just append the path/file of the XHP
file in the url to get it displayed, e.g. to display

text/shared/01/ref_pdf_export.xhp

Once you modify the file, you have done an "enhancement" to our
software. The differences between your work and the existing text is a
"patch". A patch must be submitted to our git repository interface
named gerrit. Someone, (possibly me or another developer [1]) will
review your patch and approve, comment and ask for more work, or reject
it. Once approved your enhancement is part of LibreOffice.

How to submit a patch:

[libreoffice-documentation] OmegaT and GitHub

2016-05-13 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi

I have set the LibreOffice OmegaT project in github for pt-BR, Sophie
gave me admin rights.

I was able from OmegaT to access the project in GitHub and I have a
local copy accessible for translation with OmegaT. So far so good.

But I keep being asked to authenticate in order to synchronize my local
translation with github. The credentials I put there (ohallot/) are
refused always.

Any pointer where I should investigate to fix this?

Thank you

[libreoffice-documentation] Message from Translators to Authors...

2016-05-14 Thread Olivier Hallot
Dear Authors

When translating some of the ODF Authors books I found the following
issues that hit the speed of the translation and efficiency of the CAT
tools.

1)
When using cross-references to objects in the text (Figure, Table,
Frames, etc...) please don't use "Category and Number" in the reference,
but only "Number". Put the Category out of the cross-reference and write
it in the text.

This is because the Category is translatable while the number is not.
For example, the text

"See Figure 12 on page 30"

If "Figure 12" is is a cross-reference with Category and Number, we
can't translate "Figure". We have to change the cross reference to
Number in the translated text, and this requires a longer revision
process. CAT tools are not prepared to detect this (OmegaT).

2)
Wherever possible, avoid direct formatting (DF). If impossible, please
clean the DF before applying DF changes. DF has consequences in CAT
tools by mushrooming formatting tags that fools translation memories and
turns translation a longer, manual task. The lesser DF, the best.

Thank you and kind regards

As opposed to the old OpenOffice.org at SUN's times, I am not aware of
the doc's/spec's of any feature unique to LibreOffice. At best, some
senior developers write the help pages or blog posts, which is much
appreciated, but it is not the rule. Therefore, volunteers pick the
features and, with trial and error, sweat, devotion and abnegation,
write on the subject.

>
> b) What infrastructure is needed to help with help files?

There are 3 ways to edit help files. All need a copy of the helpconten2/
module git in the local machine.

1) using the HelpAuthoring extension. See
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/HelpContent

2) an experimental on-line text editor in vm173
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/OnlineHelpContent

3) plain text edition in your local copy of helpcontent2/

For 2) write me offline to get a login.

Kind regards

I saw it as a way to create a TOC that links to entries that contains
carefully cratfted "questions" with precise and rich answers, using the
S.O. engine.

I'm no expert but I see 2 softwares for the same purpose: create a
knowledge base feeded by the community of users, with the expectation
that answers to any question in the universe will show up filtering
massive Q's and A's. Reality shows not so easy.

Stack Overflow and Askbot are not a panacea but the bottom line is very
positive anyway. I moderate brazilian askbot and it works. But the
quality of either questions and answers are rarely acceptable as a
reference on the topic. People never search for topic before asking,
thus lots of repetition. People also don't use the voting system or even
bother do downvote bad answers (can spark emotions if you do). Maybe
this is community-related, but it is a fact.

Therefore, as I said above, carefull questions and rich & precise
answers equals workload anyway.

and wiki too. But like software development, we accept "patches" on our
doc only after peer review. Believe me, there is no better rich editor
than Writer and with a good DMS, unbeatable.

right, but mixing different tools is a maintenance nightmare.
Nevertheless, discoverability of the documentation/information is one of
my concerns at them moment.

It can even be the Local Help, one F1 strike far. But see below.

Today we have this documentation format scenario:

- Localhelp, that contains a reference and a user guide, localized with
pootle, downloadable. Online version at help.libreoffice.org, XML files.

- LO Guides Books, produced in odt format, localizable with CAT by the
communities. Rich content, ease of edition.

- Askbot: on-line, user driven knowledge base, not localized, per language.

- TDF wiki: Some communities produce Q's and localized doc here.

- external, amateur blogs on LO topics, hints, tips (I'd like to
PLANETIZE this)

- other, found by googling around.

My take is that there is no one-size-fits-all, very hard not to
duplicate workload.

Books/chapters/sections are important for the training/migration
industry, and is the fastest way to port the documentation to other
languages. With a DMS (Document Management Sys

[libreoffice-documentation] Updating Getting Started to 5.2: Low hanging fruits

2016-07-29 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello Doc'Team!

Since Jean Weber published all chapters of Getting Started 5.1, we are
now ready to start updating the chapters for release 5.2

There are some really easy tasks to take:

*Very easy* (likely no changes between 5.1 and 5.2, but worth reading
anyway):
Preface
Appendix A
Appendix B
Macros
Math

*A bit more care when checking:*
Introducing LibreOffice
Styles and Templates
Creating web pages
Print, Export, Email
Graphics Gallery, Fontwork

*In-depth look on new features:*
Writer
Calc
Impress
Draw
Base
Customizing LO

The list of new features are in (1).

Not every new feature need to be mentioned in a introductory text like
Getting Started. For example, the new Calc functions FORECAST.* is by
far too specific, but the new wildcard expressions worth very much to be
quoted, because it solves an old interop issue with Excel.

We delagate to your judgement what worth be quoted/updated or not, and
this list is the right place to discuss.

On updating the chapters, always activate the Track changes feature of
writer (IMPERATIVE).

The files are available in ODFAuthor website(2). Please access the 5.1
Published folder to grab your file to update.

And always tell us here on what chapter you are reviewing.

Happy documenting!

OmegaT.

Yes. Although I managed to convert references from e.g.
[Figure n]
to
Figure [n]

I may have let some of them pass.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Expanding help contend for issue #100568

2016-07-18 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi Lothar

Sorry for the late response.

I'm having trouble associating bug#100568 into a help content related
issue. Have I missed something?

But if you are available to address help content issues, we collected
them in this meta-bug:

https://goo.gl/fwL7kO

Let me know if one of these topics pleases you and I'll help you to get
it done.

Kind Regards

Olivier

[libreoffice-documentation] GS 5.1 Chapter 6 (Impress) uploaded to draft folder for revision

2016-07-17 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi all

I've added information on Impess remote at the end.

Once Impress and Draw chapter are revised and published, the Getting
Started 5.1 Book is ready for final assembly.

I will now take the published chapters for LO 5.1 and update for LO 5.2.

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Expanding help contend for issue #100568

2016-07-19 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hi Lothar

Can you double check if bug #100568 (LibreOffice Bugzilla) has anything
related to a dialog, colour and borders? A typo may have slipped in,
because 100568 is a pivot table & filter display issue, not chart and
data series.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100568

You can also try to find the help page in this site

http://vm173.documentfoundation.org/text/schart/main.xhp

and let me know the troubling page.

Kind regards

Olivier

On a personal choice, I think "Advanced techniques" is better than "Extras".

[libreoffice-documentation] Guides download website (II)

2017-02-03 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello (and sorry for cross-posting, the subject does matter the 2 lists)

As expected, the number of visits to the documentation website after the
release of LibreOffice 5.3 has surged about 10x.

It has already shed light on our guides and I am sharing with you.
Looking at the statistics by piwik, here are some information (stats
collected February 1 and 2)

Notes:
People of ru/, ja/, pl/, nl/, da/ and other languages hit a "Page not
found" at entry.
People from it/ and es/ hit an empty page (page is work in progress)
People from fr/ and de/ are sent to TDF wiki.

Conclusion (at this point)
1) users may be just exploring new resources and downloading files they
never thought it exist, but also they got valuable information, as the
Calc guide download let us think. LibreOffice user base is eager to get
instruments to better perform their duties, the Guides are one of these
instruments.
2) "Page not found" should be addressed, I am available to assist and
even execute page contents for the NL communities, when asked.
3) NL communities and the documentation team plays an important role as
well as they has a challenge for the success of LibreOffice in every use
case (home/office/corporate).
4) Almost all entries are "direct entries", which means they came from
the Help menu of LibreOffice 5.3. Looking upside-down, LO is an "app"
for accessing our guides... :-)

Other interpretations on the data above are possible, more data is
available from TDF infra (piwik), it does not close the subject at all
and is brought here for discussion.

Kind regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Contributing to LibreOffice documentation

2017-02-07 Thread Olivier Hallot
Welcome Matthew

Your skills in LibreOffice are indeed important to our community and you
will find a lot to do.

We have a set of guides that need to be updated. These guides are edited
in Writer with our best practices (e.g. styles, master documents, etc...)

We can start in 2 directions

one, is to update our introductory text "Getting Started" from version
5.2 (almost done) to version 5.3 (easy to medium difficulty).

The second is to take one of our module guide (e.g. spreadsheet book)
and update to version 5.3, requiring quite deep knowledge in the module
software (medium to hard difficulty).

To get the guides and have a glimpse on how they actually look like
please get any of them in the documentation website at

http://documentation.libreoffice.org/en/

and let me know your prefered project.

Kind regards

Olivier

Hello

We have a new website designed to make easy for the user to find our
LibreOffice Guides. I have placed all guides in English in this website
as well as translated guides from some other communities like pt-BR.

http://documentation.libreoffice.org

To help the NL communities I have set a wiki page explaining a bit more
about the website.

If you want to open a page for your locale, please let me know, I can
assist in setting the right page and guide file tree.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Published chapter of GS5.2

2017-02-23 Thread Olivier Hallot
Hello Martin

Because I wanted to have a unique source for books and web pages
(XHTML), I took Jean's 5.2 chapters (were they cleaned by the script? I
guess yes) and I started exporting to XHTML. That is, I took what Jean
uploaded as final.

I guarantee no direct formatting (DF) was introduced by me. Rather, an
intense work on the style tuning was necessary.

On exporting to XHTML, I found several issues hidden in ODT or PDF that
I managed to fix or change with another solution. All fixes are in
revised ODT files.

None of the fixes for the issues found changed the visual result of the
ODT source and the PDF export.

Kind regards
Olivier

Hi Martin
Thanks for the cleaned files.

However, after some time spent comparing them I found an issue in
Milos's python script.

Take GS5200-Preface.odt and compare the Note text (green bullet) where
it says "Some Linux distributions include LibreOffice..."

The cleaned file is in bold text, no matter you remove direct formatting
and apply the "Text Note" style. The output of the python script is

8<---
olivier@olivier-ntbk:~/52/Test$ ./odtclean.py -i GS5200-Preface.odt -o
clean/GS5200-Preface.odt
cleanSpans(T) : { s }
cleanSpans(T) : { Some Linux  }
cleanSpans(T) : { distribution }
cleanSpans(T) : { s include  }
cleanSpans(T) : {  as part of the installation and may not include  }
cleanSpans(T) : { all the }
cleanSpans(T) : {  icon set }
cleanSpans(T) : { s mentioned above }
cleanSpans(T) : { . You should be able to download  }
cleanSpans(T) : { o }
cleanSpans(T) : { ther }
cleanSpans(T) : {  icon set }
cleanSpans(T) : { s }
cleanSpans(T) : {  from the software repository for your Linux  }
cleanSpans(T) : { distribution  }
cleanSpans(T) : { if you wish to use them }
cleanSpans(T) : { . }

8<---

For the time being, I'll let the files as they are at the moment,
because they are good for publication. I recall that Jean cleaned the
5.1 final files which are the base of our 5.2 update.

Also, the script handles only character formatting + and an ancient OOo
style. Most of the issues I found in compiling the book and also
exporting to XTMHL dealed with other issues, especially in images and
lists, not in the scope of the script. I'll blog-posting my findings soon.

Lessons learned, lessons applied: Creating books with LO needs "manu
militari" discipline on styles.

Kind regards
