[Dx4win] Logging Time
The HELP file says the time is calculated from the time zones you put in the Windows operating system. My computer is on local time and the log is GMT and it automatically updates for Daylight Savings Time. In earlier versions you had some additional controls on time, but the present implementation (V7) seems to do it automatically. Judging by some of the time and date problems in very old paper logs, this is worth the price of the program alone!!! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dennis Mowers Sent: Thursday, March 16, 2006 12:04 PM To: dx4win Subject: [Dx4win] Logging Time Is there a way to offset the log time from the computer clock so I can run the computer on local time, and log in GMT? 73, Dennis -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Dx4win] service
I believe Paul's support is extremely good. I would also like the Winkey support and would be willing to pay an upgrade fee to get it. I paid the last upgrade fee for the RTTY support, but have not had an antenna up since I moved so have not had a chance to use it yet, but felt the upgrade was a really good one. In my previous correspondence with Paul, he sometimes does not agree on the way I think something should work (colors and multiple qsl managers and sources), but has always been open to discussing them with me. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Marc Wullaert Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:28 AM To: DX4WIN List Subject: [Dx4win] service I was just reading this from the dx4win reflector..a review by ON4UN 19. [Dx4win] QSL Managers
It would be a real benefit to have more than one qsl manager shown. 1) The one that came with DX4WIN 2) The one that came from the GO list 3) The one that the DX station gave me and I entered 4) The one that was there when I sent the qsl card. Preserved forever in the notes for this QSO. Since that is probably unreasonable, a different color for the source of the manager would be almost as helpful. The cost of qsling is so high that anything that would help this situation would be a worthwhile addition to DX4WIN. My work around has always been to try to put the actual station callsign in the notes for this qso, so it does not change from time to time. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alan Zack Sent: Tuesday, June 14, 2005 4:48 PM To: Jim Reisert AD1C Cc: dx4win reflector Subject: [Dx4win] Country files Jim, AD1C, has some very good update tips on his web site for when you are changing versions. [Dx4win] QSL managers
It would certainly be nice (and save me a lot of postage) if DX4WIN could handle the following with background colors for multiple qsl managers: 1) Furnished with Program 2) Found in Go List 3) Added by me 4) Card was previously sent to this qsl manager. It would be nice if the previous date the card was sent was preserved when the card was marked for qsl a second time, since this date is normally lost unless you manually enter it in the notes for this qsl. If the program did this automatically, it would save a lot of work. [Dx4win] ADIF Import of LOTW
That would be a wonderful addition to DX4WIN and you have described the necessary settings that would be useful. Although you can do replace existing data now, that is not nearly as useful as letting you be asked on a per-item basis. Since many people who send records to LOTW do not seem to know their zones, etc., a wholesale replace is not advisable and will quickly foul up the countries database exceptions. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of K2DBK - David Sent: Saturday, January 22, 2005 5:29 PM To: Jim Reisert AD1C Cc: DX4WIN List Server Subject: Re: [Dx4win] ADIF Import of LOTW I can see this being useful as an option, with settings like: -Imported data does not replace existing data -Imported data completely overwrites existing data -Imported data only overwrites missing data -User is asked on a per-item/per-QSO basis You listening Paul? :-) At 04:34 PM 1/22/2005, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: At 02:45 PM 1/22/2005, J. [Dx4win] External database verses qrz.com on the internet.
There are so many problems to doing that, it will never happen. [Dx4win] LOTW Upload Confirm/Submit/Awarded
NO! It is not even practical. ARRL did not use the same calls in their list that they had previously awarded for the DXCC awards. I had previously carefully entered the QSO that was approved by MODE and BAND as they were approved. When they went to LOTW, they used the most recent one that they had approved for you. The LOTW data does not include the information to know from each confirmed contact what award it was actually credited. The following is an example: CALL:5TX0DX BAND:320M MODE:3SSB QSO_DATE:82327 TIME_ON:6051106 QSL_RCVD:1Y QSLRDATE:820040516 DXCC:3512 CQZ:232 ITUZ:256 IOTA:5OC176 GRIDSQUARE:4QH90 eor This QSO was credited for BAND, but not for SSB Mode, but you cannot tell that from the QSL record. The actual credited information is available on the site, otherwise the award data could not be calculated on the ARRL website. Most of us have kept up with this information for many years and have it correctly stored in DX4WIN at this time. There are actually two parts to this, though. 1) The adif import for LOTW download (with INCLUDE QSL DETAIL block checked) could be improved in DX4WIN to allow import since LOTW records contain IOTA, DXCC Country, state, gridsquare, cq zone, itu zone, qsl date, and county data same as a paper QSL in addition to the confirmation and some of this data is only available from a QSL card unless we can get it from the LOTW record. Again, it would be a disaster if you could not check each and every piece of data before using it. Believe it or not, many stations DO NOT know their correct Zone, etc., and the LOTW QSL data is absolutely WRONG is these cases. 2) IF ARRL makes the WHERE CREDITED data available in the QSL downloads, then Paul might consider importing this data into DX4WIN, but it would certainly require a separate program to import this into the log AND ALLOW YOU to determine that you wanted to accept each and every piece of information as it would destroy old records that are more accurate (although now dated) than the LOTW information. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx Sent: Thursday, June 10, 2004 8:31 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] LOTW Upload Confirm/Submit/Awarded While I suspect this is going to be a nightmare for a short time, does anyone know a trick for getting the ARRL LOTW Awarded information into your DX4WIN database? [Dx4win] Log File Transfer
Copying anything to CD's is not without problems. The files become read only files when you look at the properties, and you have to change them back to read/write files. Most logs and the save directory can be zipped and will fit on a 1.44 floppy. That is easy to move to the new computer and unzip in a backup directory. That said: I would run the old DX4WIN on the old computer and write the DX4WIN ini file to the save directory which is probably DX4W602/save. This saves most of your preferences. I would write the entire save directory to a cd, then write it back to a backup of the save directory on the new computer. Change all file properties in this new directory back from read only to read write. You original log will be in this directory as should be your call.key keycode for DX4WIN. Install the new program. Import the dx4win.ini file through preferences, copy your key file to the new save directory and copy your log to the new save directory. You should be good to go. The new country file is good enough that I would not import my old country file unless you want to import the qsl managers. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Bud Governale Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 2004 4:23 PM To: Dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Log File Transfer I'm downloading 6.03 to a new computer. [Dx4win] CW DXCC dilemma
I also asked about this several years ago; however, it really did not turn out to be much of a problem. Initially, I selected the valid qso's for submittal. The very few that were left were then simply marked as invalid and in the notes as invalid for CW DXCC. My cw qso's went back to 1955 and I only wound up with a handful of them marked as invalid. I doubt that it would be worthwhile for Paul to fix as I have been through the logic Paul uses for marking qso's for DXCC submittal and there simply are no dates in them. The logic is pretty straightforward and that is why the searches are so fast. I did not think of using my group selections, and I would not have had to mark a few cards as invalid. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Floyd Sense Sent: Monday, April 26, 2004 2:41 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] CW DXCC dilemma If you use DX4WIN for tracking DXCC totals, I wonder how you handle this situation: A DX station (new country) was worked in 1973 on 40M CW. [Dx4win] Confused About Spot Prioritization
If you are working for 5 band DXCC, try a different approach. Work every spot you see that is priority 1,2, or 3. Turn off the modes for DXCC that you are not interested in such as digital modes and cw. Priority 1 is a new country that has never been worked before on any band, so you need all of those. Priority 2 is a new Mode, and for most of us that is a lot higher than a new band country, so you normally need all of those unless you do not work a particular mode, which you can turn off in preferences. Be sure that the DXCC tab in preferences is set for the modes, bands, and separate band awards that you wish to go for. The worked cutoff and mailed cutoff can be temporarily set to 20,000 to be sure that is not affecting the spots you want. There is also a button in preferences called DX alerts that affects the spots that you want. 5 Band DXCC normally comes to those that work and confirm countries routinely on the easy bands, then you spend all of your time counting the 40 and 80 meter confirmations, then eventually 12, 17, 30, and 160 meter bands. DX4WIN makes the record keeping effortless, though. With LOTW, the time to get the award should be much faster, but the cost is still high. p.s. you can change the color scheme of the spots, but I would do that only as a last resort. Setting preferences correctly is a much better way. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Stan Staten Sent: Wednesday, February 11, 2004 6:28 PM To: DX4WIN Subject: [Dx4win] Confused About Spot Prioritization I guess I really don't know how to make the spot prioritization work for me. I have the following problems:
[Dx4win] DX4Win 6.x Questions
Question 1 and 2: You can change them back the way they were, and I did. I would think a line would be difficult to implement and would allow less spots for the same size window. Question 3. It is the priority of the spot and is not removable (although the column can be made small) Question 4. Check preferences and be sure it is pointing to the go list directory under external data in preferences. Question 6: Guess some of us have different opinions. Since F2 is now used for confirming a qso and Alt F2 is used for confirming an SWL qso, I personally think it would be very confusing to have an Alt F2 do anything. When I have a large stack of qsl cards and am using the F2 key to search and mark many qsls at a setting, the present use of F2 is really nice and fast to simplify what used to be a very tedious chore. Since I normally only use the Mark QSLs for labels for DXCC as a global marking, this works very well, but usually results in marking way too many qsls if you don't do it very often. I wish it would show me the redundant ones and their qsl managers and let me pick the one or two to send, but it is so MUCH better than manual methods, I doubt that a change to the software would really benefit many people. That said, Paul listens well, and then makes the decisions that he thinks will help the most DXERS (buyers) and implements those changes. [Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited
I doubt that Paul will ever make these colors user programmable for the priorities. I think the order you laid out for 1) never worked 2) never worked mode 3) never worked band will satisfy 90% of the DX community. The unconfirmed mode and band are neat touches, also. Paul spent a period of several months getting the never worked band as a reality, and that has helped me more than any other improvement in DX4WIN as getting bands worked for anyone chasing MIXED, PHONE, and CW (or RTTY) takes a lot of work without this improvement working properly. After a while there are not many never worked left. The logic used by DX4WIN is pretty straightforward and as best I can sort it out, depends on the priority order for the searches to be very quick (and it is). Yes, I agree with your order. I confirm DX to the ARRL requirements and do not care for having to work every band in all modes as that requires working Dxepeditions too many times, but there are those that want to work every band on both CW and Phone and RTTY. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2003 3:23 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited I think I boiled the priorities down to three simple rules: 1. When one entity is unworked and the other is worked but not confirmed, the unworked entity has priority over the worked entity. The priorities I suggested earlier seem to embody these requirements: 1 = never worked 2 = never worked mode 3 = never worked band 4 = unconfirmed mode 5 = unconfirmed band Does this make sense to everyone? 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.com PGP Fingerprint: D8E2 3D78 339F A7F1 8C13 1193 B5D1 4FB6 79D1 70DC ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win
[Dx4win] Confusion over checked awards flags
ARRL treats them the same. You can probably work around the problem by doing a 5BDXCC submission, exporting the logfile, make a new log of just these qso's, do a regular submission so they will get marked correctly, then import them back to your log replacing the duplicate qso's. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Floyd Sense Sent: Wednesday, February 26, 2003 10:42 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net; Paul van der Eijk Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Confusion over checked awards flags Thanks, Paul. [Dx4win] Confusion over checked awards flags
First, be sure that preferences are set correctly for your station and DXCC modes. Look at a DXCC summary report. It should show how many countries you have Checked by ARRL for each band. Submitted is marked for those contacts automatically tha are included in the DXCC submittal. Let me know if you have any other questions after looking at my summary report for all bands and modes and yours. I just got back the report from ARRL for the 738 submittals I just made and they will be converted to Checked once I have gone through their comments. DX4WIN really works well on DXCC submittals. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Floyd Sense Sent: Tuesday, February 25, 2003 6:45 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Confusion over checked awards flags Given enough time, I might be able to figure this out myself, but I'm sure one of you has already been through this so will just ask in order to save some time. I converted to DX4WIN about 18 months back and imported all my log data from the previous logging program (running 5.03 now). When I did that, I went through the QSOs that had already been credited for my DXCC and marked them all Checked in the Mixed DXCC award flags. So, when I look at the DXCC summary report, the right number of countries appear as Checked. Now it's time to submit for 5BDXCC and I attempted to prepare a submission, but DX4WIN tells me that it won't include 4 of the bands because I'm already credited for 100 countries on those bands, which is incorrect. So, I look at the DXCC listing report and take a look at the line for 3B6. It shows a C for the bands 30 through 10, because a QSO marked confirmed=Y exists with 3B6 on each of those bands. Only one of those QSOs has the DXCC Mixed awards flagged set to Chkd. It appears to me that DX4WIN is counting all such QSOs as Checked even though they have not been. Can someone tell me what I'm missing? All QSOs that have the DXCC Mixed awards flag set to Chkd show up as a * in the listing, and I assumed that DX4WIN would only count THOSE QSOs as already checked. All ideas appreciated! [Dx4win] Print on Back of QSL Card
I don't think everything that you wish to do can be done by DX4WIN or any program for that matter. DX4WIN separates PSE and TNX qsls but not SSB and CW unless they have different qsl managers. I have room to print about 5 or 6 qso's on my cards and that is only a limitation of my cards. The main problem is to be sure you have a printer that will pull your qsls in from the short end and handle a stack of them. I use an EPSON 2000P which uses archival pigmented inks and they will last a long time and not fade. Your printer ink may not last forever. I use it to print all my qsl cards and it works just fine (V 6.02 that is). The info below is caused by me having to fool my printer, so you will have to experiment with the spacing, etc., but it works well. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Alan Clark Sent: Saturday, February 15, 2003 9:00 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Print on Back of QSL Card I want to print the label directly on the back of my 5 1/2w x 3 1/2t QSL cards. What you are missing is the recent changes in the DXCC program that now give credit for 18 separate DXCC awards. This is the game for many dxers. Modes for MIXED, PHONE, CW, RTTY are the primary awards up to and including DXCC Honor Roll. Bands from 160 meters to 2 meters and Satellite qualify for 5BDXCC and endorsements for an additional 6 bands as well as the DXCC Challange award. I am not aware of any of these programs that require you to work every mode on every band. That is what the green and white discussion has been about. Mode DXCC is band independent(there is not a 5BDXCC for PHONE or CW) - (thank goodness)! The details of the various DXCC awards that are properly tracked in DX4WIN are listed below: - 1. The DX Century Club Award, with certificate and lapel pin is available to Amateur Radio operators throughout the world (see #15 below for the DXCC Award Fee Schedule). ARRL membership is required for DXCC applicants in the US, its possessions, and Puerto Rico. ARRL membership is not required for foreign applicants. All DXCCs are endorsable (see Rule 5). There are 18 separate DXCC awards available, plus the DXCC Honor Roll: a) Mixed (general type): Contacts may be made using any mode since November 15, 1945. b) Phone: Contacts must be made using radiotelephone since November 15, 1945. Confirmations for cross-mode contacts for this award must be dated September 30, 1981, or earlier. c) CW: Contacts must be made using CW since January 1, 1975. Confirmations for cross-mode contacts for this award must be dated September 30, 1981, or earlier. d) RTTY: Contacts must be made using radioteletype since November 15, 1945. (Baudot, ASCII, AMTOR and packet count as RTTY.) Confirmations for cross-mode contacts for this award must be dated September 30, 1981, or earlier. e) 160 Meter: Contacts must be made on 160 meters since November 15, 1945. f) 80 Meter: Contacts must be made on 80 meters since November 15, 1945. g) 40 Meter: Contacts must be made on 40 meters since November 15, 1945. h) 30 Meter: Contacts must be made on 30 meters since November 15, 1945. i) 20 Meter: Contacts must be made on 20 meters since November 15, 1945. j) 17 Meter: Contacts must be made on 17 meters since November 15, 1945. k) 15 Meter: Contacts must be made on 15 meters since November 15, 1945. l) 12 Meter: Contacts must be made on 12 meters since November 15, 1945. m) 10 Meter: Contacts must be made on 10 meters since November 15, 1945. n) 6 Meter: Contacts must be made on 6 meters since November 15, 1945. o) 2 Meter: Contacts must be made on 2 meters since November 15, 1945. p) Satellite: Contacts must be made using satellites since March 1, 1965. Confirmations must indicate satellite QSO. q) Five-Band DXCC (5BDXCC): The 5BDXCC certificate is available for working and confirming 100 current DXCC entities (deleted entities don't count for this award) on each of the following five bands: 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 Meters. Contacts are valid from November 15, 1945. The 5BDXCC is endorsable for these additional bands: 160, 30, 17, 12, 6, and 2 Meters. 5BDXCC qualifiers are eligible for an individually engraved plaque (at a charge of $35.00 US plus shipping). r) The DXCC Challenge Award is given for working and confirming at least 1,000 DXCC band-Entities on any Amateur bands, 1.8 through 54 MHz. This award is in the form of a plaque. Certificates are not available for this award. Plaques can be endorsed in increments of 500. Entities for each band are totaled to give the Challenge standing. Deleted entities do not count for this award. All contacts must be made after November 15, 1945. The DXCC Challenge plaque is available for $79.00 (plus postage). QSOs for the 160, 80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6 meter bands qualify for this award. Bands with less than 100 contacts are acceptable for credit for this award. s) The DeSoto Cup is presented to the DXCC Challenge leader as of the 30th of September each year. The DeSoto Cup is named for Clinton B. DeSoto, whose definitive article in October 1935 QST forms the basis of the DXCC award. Only one cup will be awarded to any single individual. A medal will be presented to a repeat winner in subsequent years. Medals will also be awarded to the second and third place winners each year. t) Honor Roll: Attaining the DXCC Honor Roll represents the pinnacle of DX achievement: i) Mixed: To qualify, you must have a total confirmed entity count that places you among the numerical top ten DXCC entities total on the current DXCC List (example: if there are 335 current DXCC entities, you must have at least 326 entities confirmed). ii) Phone -- same as Mixed. iii) CW -- same as Mixed. iv) RTTY -- same as Mixed. To establish the number of DXCC entity credits needed to qualify for the Honor Roll, the maximum possible number of current entities available for credit is published monthly on the ARRL DXCC Web Page. I am sure you are aware that DX4WIN keeps the last copy of a log with your log name.~xl, so loss of a log is normally not possible regardless of what happens. Simply keeping a copy of your save directory, zipped or unzipped takes only a second and my log is over 15,000 contacts and zipped will fit on a floppy. A simple ctrl c and ctrl v on the logfile and .cty file will always save a copy of your log using windows explorer. Sorry you did not know all of this before. [Dx4win] Moving Log file
You can simply install the new version and you are ready to go. There are four things that most of us want to do, though: 1) Move your old logbook where the new version will know what was in it and convert it to the new format. 2) If you wrote out all of your preferences before the upgrade, they are stored in a file called DX4WIN.ini (or whatever you called it). When you merge the .ini file, it puts all of your preferences (except those that were not previously used) into the new program so that you DONT HAVE to do it manually. 3) Over the years, you have probably made a lot of callsign exceptions (like K1B) and you can move all of those forward to the new version by simply merging the only country file. You (or I) would not want these things dones automatically as there are a lot of considerations to make when setting up the logging software and you probably DONT want to merge the IOTA database from your old system, since the new one is more current. You may want to keep all of your old QSL managers and addresses as they are important to you and the merge allows this to happen. 4) I want my old report files rather than the new ones and I had to put the $$ back in contest mode to record the exact frequencies for each contact, which I want to keep in my log. Paul give some good information on the upgrade process, and fortunately leaves the decisions to the DXer rather than the programmer, on exactly how the upgrade is to be accomplished. I certainly don't consider this starting over or doing it all manual. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of TG9AJR Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 4:19 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] Moving Log file Importance: High Then why is called an upgrade if we have to do it manually ? Couple of things to mention here: 1. The Version 5 DX4WIN.CFG file is incompatible with Version 6. Copying it will do no good. You must go to Preferences in V5 and write the .INI file, then merge this into V6 from the same menu. Make sure to look at EACH preferences tab after doing this, as some of the settings don't transfer (like ICOM radio baud rate). Paul added some new awards flags, and those may not transfer properly either. 2. There were some changes to the DX4WIN.CTY file to corrrect county names. You will lose these changes if you over-write the V6 file with your V5 file. It's best to merge the CTY files, which DX4WIN should do automatically when you upgrade. 73 - Jim AD1C = Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.com PGP Fingerprint: D8E2 3D78 339F A7F1 8C13 1193 B5D1 4FB6 79D1 70DC ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win . --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- multipart/related multipart/alternative text/plain (text body -- kept) text/html image/gif The reason this message is shown is because the post was in HTML or had an attachment. DX4WIN will do a multiple marking of qsl card sent and will mark them with the date of the qso. To use this, you need to get all of these contacts in the filter (not necessarily an easy task if they are not within a date range). You can mark one date, do a ctrl a on that field, and then paste that date into each previously sent qsl card in the qso window. Otherwise, you are better off to export the log, put it in EXCEL, mark all of the dates you want to and then put it back in DX4WIN with a little manipulation to get a space deliminated file and build a import filter. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Ken Kopp - KOPP Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 8:34 PM To: DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Newbie question Is there a way to enter that a QSL has been sent, WITHOUT entering a specific date? I would try downloading the program into a directory different from the install directory. The download is about 2.5 megs and it creates two files when unzipped that have to be in the same directory (they are intended to be put on two floppies where needed). Then run the dx4win.exe file and allow it to install in the recommended directory. You need to give a little more information as there are thousands of new installs that work correctly, if that is what you did. The basic things that you need to do when changing computers is to write down each and every com port with irq, baud rate, and protocol as wellas any parallel port used with what is was hooked to so you can get the new one to the same condition. It is normally better if you turn off all radio control, tnc inputs and set all of the controls to off in preferences, then export the dx4win.ini file. With the new configuration you input the .ini file and make the correct preferences for radio control, tnc, cw keying, etc. Did you do a clean new install of an operating system on the new computer? [Dx4win] Label layout?
Use the File/Databases/Labels and select one of the two custom labels that you can customize. I use one for my labels and one for printing directly to qsl cards. I'd like to use Avery 5261 or 5159 labels for those occasions when I confirm numerous bands / modes for a DX callsign. When I enter the Avery number in the label manager, the preview shows the correct label number in terms of dimensions, but the layout is not altered and there is lots of wasted white space to the right of the standard (small) label layout. How do I alter the layout? I don't see anything in the manual about the ability to actually rearrange the entire label layout process, i.e. a label layout or configuration tool.
[Dx4win] DXCC Award Submission problem
That is true now, but I just sent ARRL over $100 with my submittal last week, which included re-submitting many many cards that had been previously submitted and ARRL did not record the band until several years ago. ARRL does not accept less than 100 cards with the first submittal. I believe they have dropped the minimum cards that have to be submitted. DX4WIN also credits you for MIXED, BAND, and MODE for any card that you submit IF you have the DXCC preferences set up correctly. I do not know what you would want the author to fix. The program won't submit cards automatically (like my 30 meter cards) where I only have 91 confirmed until I get 100 or more. If you don't tell ARRL which qso's to credit, you will be charged for each and every qso on the cards you submit, whether you have already paid for them previously. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Duane A Calvin Sent: Thursday, October 03, 2002 11:51 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] DXCC Award Submission problem Unfortunately, in 5.03 the authors have not yet fixed that problem. Hopefully that will change in the next version. In short, if you submit a QSL to the ARRL for credit, you will be credited for the MIXED, BAND, and MODE for that QSO. There is never a need to resubmit that QSO again. This is where I spend an evening or two reconciling my DX4WIN listing against
[Dx4win] Printing Log pages?
If you really want to print a paper log, the best thing to do is write your logbook as a comma deliminated file, then open it in EXCEL. Fix it just the way you want it and print it out of EXCEL. That way you can control margins, type font and sizes, etc and get lines drawn on the page, titles, footers, page numbers etc. I have a small log compared with many and my log would print over 500 pages. I choose to keep mine on cd rom for safety. You can set the log up in the logbook window to get the correct amount of columns by how you arrange the report editor and logbook window. The set the paper to landscape and it does a credible job IF you have used the filter to limit the amount of qso's to be printed. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Paul B. The basic country file (dx4win.cty) has not changed since the 5.03 version that included Ducie Island. The bad news is that a country file for dxing must reflect your own logbook and be maintained by you as you work different countries. My country file has all of my personal exceptions going back to 1955, but it is different than someone else who has been dxing for the same amount of time. There is an easier way. If you go to preferences where I have set the labels tab to print the greeting as@@ 73 de %% email [EMAIL PROTECTED] This will automatically print PSE or TNX QSL, 73 de Group Name Call and then my email address. If you have a vanity call then the correct call will be printed on the label if you name the group name correctly. My group names include the location, so mine will print W5FL Weatherford, Texas for all calls from my present qth and W5FL Jamul, CA for all calls from my California QTH, and all other qths and calls that I have previously used. Do the same thing for swl greeting Thanks SWL report de %% The group names is a wonderful feature and not used by enough people. It is also very powerful since the same calls window shows the group names and then you can always print the qsl card correctly for more than one call or location. It helps if you have more than one call to stick the label on a QSL card with the correct call in case the receiving ham did not read the label carefully enough. I have never tried sending a card from more than one group name, but for PSE and TNX being different, the program is smart enough to print the information on two qsl cards. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Larry Gauthier Sent: Monday, September 16, 2002 5:57 AM To: Ken Brookner; dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] changing my call sign: dx4win questions... [Dx4win] QSL Method All Messed Up!!!
I'm sure if you can describe the exact logic in what you want, Paul might consider programming it if he feels that it will help other users. The way it works now, is that you select an award that you are trying to get, then it lets you pick how you want to qsl for that award. You are allowed to pick the number of days since you qsl'd before, and DX4WIN will qsl them again depending on how you select for the qsl to be sent. This is different for mode, country, and new band, and sends a card to all possible contacts that fit your criteria. If you are a contester, it may send out more cards than you intended. This works for me the way it is, but you can select each qso and mark them individually. If you set the F2 key to mark them for a label D'direct, then everytime you hit the f2 key, that qso will be marked for a label Direct. There are several options for the F2 key, so read them carefully so you will not also confirm a qso with it also. I don't agree that the QSL method is all messed up, but I sometimes wish it had a little more logic in it to help optimize getting a confirmation with the least number of QSL's sent, which normally would be via a manager in the states for me as a first choice, a manager overseas as a second choice, and direct overseas as a third choice. The F2 key is designed to easily handle bureau cards and allows you to simply hit one key to confirm the contact and mark the label to return the card via the bureau. Nice feature. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Brian Boerner Sent: Monday, July 29, 2002 2:48 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Dx4win] QSL Method All Messed Up!!! ok.. so I'm a dummy. After some editing to force the file to conform to the spec, it looked OK to me. However, my QSLVIA is pretty messed up and I'm looking for some suggestions on how to fix a large number of QSOs easily. Example 1: Most of my US stations have the QSL Method marked for the Buro. I obviously want K stations to go direct. I can filter on the K prefix and Buro method, is it possible to now switch all of these over to direct? I looked at the Change QSL Routing, but it doesn't appear to do what I want. It wants to work the other way around. Example 2: Many of my non K prefix QSOs appear to have direct as the default method. Being cheap, I would prefer to give the Buro a shot first. Obviously some QSOs I'll mail a card for with a SASE but that's really only for DXpeditions, etc. I can handle those on a case by case basis, or if a year or so goes by. So far, the only way I've been able to get this to work is to just apply the filter and evaluate on a QSO by QSO basis. As you can imagine, this is quite a tedious task and very time consuming. I would never upgrade a system that way. The best way for a lot of reasons is to start with a clean, formatted hard drive and first re-install the operating system, then all of the programs one at a time. You will need to have the old .ini file, your log file, and .cty file to get the re-installed version of dx4win up and running. The problem you are having now is more than likely due to the difference in com and lpt ports and their IRQ assignment between the old and new system. This causes IRQ conflicts and all sorts of blue screens and freezes. The worst offenders are sound, modem, and network cards that can crash your system. The easiest way to troubleshoot the problem is to remove every card out of the system except the display board, get dx4win working, then install the boards back one at a time with the sound card last. This is not even foolproof unless you can disable the so called Plug and Play bios which can undo things faster than you can fix them. Although DX4WIN will run without any com ports, most users are at least using a com port for a tnc or radio control and possibly an lpt port. Good luck. No. The bad thing about computers is that they only do what you tell them. Go in with Windows Explorer and see what kind of a file structure you have under DX4WIN. [Dx4win] Backup logs
But WriteLog will! Yes, DX4WIN is one of the few programs that supports LPT01 keying under Windows 2000 (WriteLog does not directly), but I use the serial port with Writelog and hopefully DX4WIN will soon allow using a separate serial port for CW keying and PTT. This will allow the PSK31 plugin to work properly with PTT. I save the log after every qso or so, and backup the log and .cty file to a secondary drive as well as keep CDR copies. Even without all of these backup precautions, I have NEVER lost a log in DX4WIN or Writelog (which I import into DX4WIN) even when I had a Compaq Athlon 500 that was very buggy from the factory and crashed daily until Compaq changed the bios and several programs. One of the main reasons that Windows 2000 and NT are so stable is that they DO NOT ALLOW any program direct I/O access. Impossible to blue screen unless you have a buggy driver (and there are some). This makes the old DOS programs unworkable IF they make direct I/O calls. If they installed a proper driver and used it, they work just fine under Windows 2000 also. Alt-S ensures that your last contact is properly saved to the log, although it is saved to the temporary log based on the time you set in preferences. I wish there was an option to automatically do a Alt-S type save every time you hit enter. There are pros and cons with this, and I have discussed them with Paul before, but I still wish I had this option. Writelog, however, does the same as DX4WIN in that it keeps a running save and it prompts you to do a complete manual save every 25 qso's or so. Have never lost a qso with it either, so that process seems to work well on both DX4WIN and WriteLog. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Pete Smith Sent: Friday, May 03, 2002 6:34 AM To: Wendell Wyly W5FL; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Dx4win] Backup logs At 09:06 PM 5/2/02 -0500, Wendell Wyly W5FL wrote: What kind of computer and operating system are you running to have that much trouble? [Dx4win] Backup logs
My first advice to you until you get your computer to work is to print out a copy of your log on paper. Right click the log and print and you will have a permanent copy. Do the same thing each day by searching on the present day or the day before or the week before if you do not make a lot of contacts, right click and you can print the last days log. Save a copy of your log and .cty file each day on a floppy disk and rotate them. Copy your log each day to either a cd rom along with the .cty file. This will give you a permanent copy of your log and save each day under a new date on the directory on the cdrom. Save your log regularly with the save command. If you have a crash, save that log with the present date followed by a letter suffix. As soon as you save it, compare it with your log. One of them will contain the latest contacts. Until you get to where you are comfortable with DX4WIN and your computer, you may also want to save a copy of the backup file just in case you make a mistake. To find the backup log, simply do an open for the name of the file you just saved. It would normally be in the SAVE directory under DX4WIN. It is important that you check each of the 13 files, particularly the last day or so of contacts. I use the FILTER/COUNT to get a qso count, but you can do the same thing by looking at the FILE/INFO for each of the saved logs. Since you did not correct the logs when you had the problem, you will need to print out the last page of each file and then compare that with your regular log. If you find a qso that is not in the log, select QSO/ADD OFF LINE. After you do this, your log will be up to date and it is easy to keep it that way. What kind of computer and operating system are you running to have that much trouble? DX4WIN is solid as a rock. I am running Windows 2000 Professional on a home build Athlon machine. There is NO need to buy any other software to ensure that your log is always saved. All programs that do an incremental (packet) save to a CD ROM are not as reliable as saving your log on a floppy disk as they do not build a catalog of the disk contents until you close out the disk. A single scratch can cause you to lose months of data on a CDR that is packet written and they are sometimes destroyed by a power failure while the packet disk is in the disk drive. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 12:15 AM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] Backup logs Unfortunately, my computer now and then just resets itself for no discernible reason. [Dx4win] printers for printing on QSL cards
My cards are set up to take an average size label (clear) in the lower right hand corner or to print directly on the individual cards. You can print up to six or so qso's per card this way. The pre-printed qsl's are one color on colored stock from W4MPY and are less expensive than printing the entire card on an inkjet printer. I use DX4WIN version 5.02 as I had a problem with the current version printing the first card correctly and subsequent cards wrong. I have used an old Deskjet 712C, but like the later model Epsons which will print closer to the edge of the cards. I am using an Epson 2000P photo printer which prints with archival pigmented ink that does not fade with time. I can feed a stack of about 1/2 inch or so and put a new stack on when that one runs out. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Ed Himwich N3HXQ Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 10:53 PM To: Dx4win Subject: [Dx4win] printers for printing on QSL cards Hi, Does anyone know a good printer for printing on QSL cards directly? [Dx4win] Filtering and DXCC Award Submission
If in entering the data, when it said do you want to submit this card and you put those in a separate box, then the submission will match your box. Save a copy of this log and your .cty file so you can back up to this point if you need to do so. If you did not separate them, then just clean ALL submission flags, and when you do a DXCC submission, being sure you have all the boxes checked correctly in the DXCC preferences. It will take the LAST received (not the first) for each country for submission. If you have previously submitted cards to DXCC, then you will have to do a manual entry for CHECKED for each one. Re[2]: [Dx4win] QSL mgr update#6
If you have logs that go back many years, DX4WIN has the ONLY solution that will work properly. I have KA1S from Minami Torishima in 1977, Germany (deleted), Czechoslovakia (deleted), P2 (Papua) deleted, ZD4 (Gold Goast) deleted, Y2 (East Germany) deleted, many VK9,VP8, CE9, old Russian calls, etc. that would only work properly with the DX4WIN merging scheme. I still have a few calls that I am unsure what country they are from and they can be found with a Prefix that is blank. The first time old logs are put in DX4WIN, the exception records are written for YOUR countries ONLY and the file is then merged with the new country list. A very nice solution. The differences are clearly shown for EACH and EVERY exception, which you can save to a file when you merge the files to determine exactly which exceptions you have. Other logging programs that attempt to be something to everyone for a country list make numerous mistakes to the correct country count. You may want to simply merge each of your old country files, print the exceptions, and determine if you have all of them in a single country file, then merge this with the .cty file that comes with 5.03. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Larry Alkoff Sent: Thursday, March 28, 2002 12:20 AM To: Duane A Calvin Cc: dx4win Subject: Re: Re[2]: [Dx4win] QSL mgr update#6 On Wed, 27 Mar 2002 11:45:24 -0600, Duane A Calvin wrote: Larry - if you read the manual, you will see that the old country file is merged with the new one manually after the new version is installed. It came from copying over both n2la.dxl and dx4win.cty from the master house version to update the shack for stuff like qsl's received, etc. When I'm sure of my ground I'll copy it back to the shack. However I'm not at all sure it's useful to worry about dx4win.cty. It seems to me that the log _already_ contains the exception data and that will not change. The only thing that might matter are new countries added of which there is only Ducie. [Dx4win] PTT support by DX4WIN for FT1000MP
Using Windows 2000, I am using DTR on the Radio Com Port for CW keying through an opti-isolator on a FT1000MP. Is PTT supported by DX4WIN directly as a command to the radio (OPCODE OFH), support RTS for the PTT, or some other way other than the LPT port? The CW keying is working great (except the focus has to be on the function key window to operate), but have not been able to get the proper PTT operation working. It also seems that when DX4WIN uses the DTR line to send CW, it does not use the RTS line to do PTT. Also when running PSK31, the PTT must be on a separate Com port than the radio. If I am going to have to devote TWO Com Ports to the radio, then I will use the first for radio control and cw keying from the DTR line and the second Com port for PTT from the RTS line and FSK keying from the Tx line. DX4WIN does not appear to support a second Com port for PTT (or any Com port for that matter). PTT, fortunately, works great in WriteLog which handles Com Ports with a selection matrix which allows you to use any combination of Com ports for CW keying, Radio Control, and PTT. Am I missing something or does DX4WIN require 2 com ports to run PSK31 with radio control and PTT and DX4WIN will not do PTT with cw keying on a Com Port? I prefer NOT to use the Line Printer (LPT) ports for this, or any other function, other than printing.

[Dx4win] Full Import of WriteLog V10 for ARRL DX Phone and CW log files to DX4WIN with frequency, exchange, and sequence numbers
I was not satisfied with the export ADIF from Writelog and Import ADIF to DX4WIN to import the WriteLog logs from the ARRL CW and PHO DX Contests this year. I made a new filter for DX4WIN inport to add the power exchange (RCVD, Sequence Number, Received Frequency, and Transmit Frequency for uploading WriteLog files into DX4WIN for the ARRL CW and PHONE DX Contests. The following notes may help someone else who wants to do the same thing: Export your Writelog as .wk1 format and open in Microsoft EXCEL. (I put both CW and PHO logs in same EXCEL listing to import all at once.) Do a find and replace on the column with PH to change to PHO (DX4WIN import filter does not recognize PH as Phone.) Delete the header's) and double click each column to get minimum column width. Format the frequency columns and set to NUMBER formatting. Format the RST and SEQ numbers as Text so they will left justify. Save log in space delimited format (.prn) Copy any filter that uses an ASCII file. I used ARRL Contest Submission. Select Edit from the pull down menu and change the title to ARRL DX 2002 PHO and CW Change the suffix on the file on this same window from TXT to PRN. I have listed the Position numbers I used, but these may vary depending on the width of the columns that you have in your spreadsheet. Mine was minimal, but those with over 1000 contacts will have 4 digit sequence numbers and those that operated 160 may need to adjust the band filter. Set up Band from 16/80/40 (Mine was Position 20 with a length of 2, but I don't use 160 so you may have to change this one) Next set up call sign (Mine was Position 63 with a length of 10) Next set up date a -mm-dd (Mine was Position 28 and the length was automatically set to 10) Next set up mode CW-PHO-FSK (Mine was Position 23 with the length automatically set to 3) Note 1 to be stored with QSO set up (Mine was Position 1 with length of 3) This stores the log sequence number of the qso in the notes field, but those with over 999 qsos will need 4 digits here. Note 2 to be stored with QSO notes set up (Mine was Position 12 with length of 8) This stores the receive frequency in the notes. Note 3 to be stored with QSO notes set up (Mine was Position 4 with a length of 8) This stores the transmit frequency in the notes. This will give both frequencies where split operation was used. Next set up RECEIVED (Mine was position 79 with a length of 4) This stores the Power of Anything else you wrote for the DX power or State for DX). Next set up RSTR (Mine was 77 with a length of 3) This is the RST you received from the DX Station. Next set up RSTS (Mine was 74 with a length of 3) This is the RST you sent to the DX station. Next set up the time in HH:MM (Mine was 38 with a length of 5 automatically set). Next put in the Prefix (Mine was 116 with a length of 4) Save the filter and exit. Import the .prn file. Save a copy of your log file before the imports so you can start over easily. If you get any errors, check them out very carefully and then fix the filter until you have no errors. I also added a group number for each contest so they show up in the Same Call Window as ARRL DX CW Contest or ARRL DX PHO Contest. The change group command makes this very easy to do after you set up the edit group names and selection.
[Dx4win] Reports blanked out after contest
Hi Margaret I also used Writelog during the ARRL CW and Phone DX Contests. I would do a search of your computer for *.wl to find all of your writelog logs. They should be about 70K or so in size for 300 contacts. Open Writelog, and it will ask if you want to use a current log, which it keeps listed or start a new one. Use a current one if one is available in the list. If one is not listed, then use the open command to find the ones you already have saved and found with the search *.wl. WriteLog is pretty forgiving and keeps a copy of all unsaved contacts, so it is kind of hard to lose a log during a contest, but hope you did save your log at the start of the contest. If you find the log and can look through it and find all of your contacts, use the export command to export a Cabrillo file which will be in test format. If you are able to do that, you should be able to create a summary report, although the Cabrillo file contains your score and all of the data needed to derive the other reports. You should also export a ADIF formatted copy of your log and you can then get most of the data into your DX4WIN logbook. It will not do the exchange (Power) or the exact frequency in the notes without a lot of mumbo jumbo (unfortunately). The import filter for WriteLog is not really useful, but the import ADIF gets the main data from the contest logs. Hope your WriteLog logfiles are ok and you are able to recover all the data from the contests. The WriteLog site has a very detailed help file that you can download and print and it is a pretty good manual for the software. [Dx4win] Kind of off topic
I also suffered through a Compaq Presario. Never bothered to call them, but it took them 6 months to finally resolve their bios problems and proprietary software problems (the little check for software updates). The do post their updates on the web, so you can keep up with their fixes. After they finally got their system to the point that it was releasable, it worked ok. They refused to support Windows 2000 Prof. The reason primarily was that they were unable to answer the questions that it presented to their technical staff and they did not have drivers for some of their peripheral cards. The only help I can offer is for Windows 2000, although Windows 98 is similar, and your system probably came with that wonderful operation system XT (slightly glorified Windows 2000). Most bios' allow you to turn off the plug and play (very unreliable in a real time environment anyway). The biggest problem you will have is getting the COM ports worked out properly since the Compaq only comes with one or at most two com ports. It is easy to build a simple box to take the DTR line and key a transistor (or Opto-isolator) for keying the xmitter for cw and taking the RTS line and keying the Push to Talk line - all off of the same com port. Unfortunately DX4WIN does not yet support the Push to Talk line in CW and the WinPSK plug in does not allow the PTT to be on the same com port as the radio. They do support using a LPT port for that, but that is way too much trouble to use a LPT port when you are also using a printer on that port. So I had to use two com ports to do these functions. I also use WriteLog and it DOES allow you to use a single com port for PTT, Radio Control, and Keying the Xmtr in CW mode. DX4WIN is really a very easy program to start up. It allow you to use a TNC for the packet input (recommended) and also use the Internet Connection through the RTTY screen by setting the com port in preferences to TCP/IP. Strange, but it works really well. I do not run RTTY with DX4WIN (no TNC for that mode), but use MMTTY and soundcard with WriteLog. It is possible to run MMTTY with DX4WIN, but it is a hardware solution using a couple of extra com ports to interface the two programs. Clean if you have them to spare. I am already using six com ports now. Don't know what program you have been using for logging, but the first order of business should be to import your old log files and then check very very carefully that you have the correct country count as you thought you had for each mode and band. The reason is that many of the old countries will not come across correctly since the assignments have changed in recent years. For instance my Okinawa was a KA1 which is now a USA call area. The same is true for many other countries if you have many old ones, you need to check your logs very carefully. Once you get everything imported correctly, the program does a very good job of keeping up with DXCC submittals, countries worked, qsl's sent and received, etc. Good luck with your new DX4WIN program. I am sure you will never regret your investment in this program. [Dx4win] Packet spotting colors etc
1) Would much prefer to see NEW MODE as the number two priority (the BLUE LINE has been a wonderful feature for the last few years) and the country not confirmed should definitely be moved to a lower priority as it will stay up there for months (or years) for the new dxers that qsl via the buro. 2) Would like to have the capability to turn off the band/mode priority as it simply causes you to work a station on every band and every mode when only once per mode and once per band will count for anything for DXCC. The same is true for not confirmed on band/mode which tries to confirm every mode for every band resulting in sending out too many qsl cards that have no value when received. You can also save a copy of it to a file, which I would definitely recommend. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of wo2n Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 5:26 PM To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] dx4win Submission (DXCC, WAZ): Does DX4WIN print an application form to submit with the cards? If so please where? Thanks, Bernie/WO2N. ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win
[Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use?
Interesting that DX4WIN no longer replies to the writer of the message, but to the whole group. I have DX4WIN and Writelog on an Athlon 1600 system running under Windows 2000. It is an excellent operating system. There are few advantanges and lots of disadvantages to go to XP Pro, and I would not even bother with XP home. You can buy Windows 2000 Pro as an OEM package for a little over $100 making it a very real bargain as well as a very stable operating system with good support. The LPT Issue is simply that Wayne chooses not to write a driver for the LP port to support Writelog. Has nothing to do with the operating system and I am sure he will eventually get around to it. In the meantime the serial ports do everything the LPT ports do for me. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Stan Staten Sent: Monday, December 31, 2001 4:50 PM To: DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use? I am posting this to both Writelog and DX4WIN. I am building an new AMD 1500 system for use here in the shack. There has been a lot of discussion of which operating systems work best or have problems (like LPT CW keying). I am now faced with the choice of WIN98SE, WIN2K, WIN XP Pro and Home. Which one should I use? Looking for advice. To conserve bandwidth it may be best to send any thoughts or suggestions you may have directly to me rather than posting it.
