Hi Gary;
Look in from with the top off at the RF board where the KAT3 or KANT3
board plugs in.
Check T4 for darkening, it gets cooked if DC is applied to the antenna
connector (like a remote preamp power connected backwards or similar).
You mentioned a remote tuner? Does it get power up the
Hi Gary,
The K3 computes forward and reflected power
from samples taken in the SWR bridge circuit.
A Tif X Gain calibration could fail because the
forward power reading is incorrect due to
a failure in that portion of the SWR bridge
circuit.
Do you have the KAT3 ATU in your K3?
If so, be sure
During operation with a home-brew mag-loop antenna, my K3 (#1222) dropped power

Subsequently, running the 50W TX Gain Calibration, some bands

Hi all,
Bad news here…. My K3 (radio 1) is not transmitting power out.!!
I have used this morning as I normally do and all was fine.
Around 1330h local time, I turned it on again and did QSO with CT7/DJ2PR and
all was fine. I let the radio on as the CWT contest started at 1400h local.

My K3 seems to send out ~50w (1.5:1 SWR) to the antenna. If I connect a dummy

expected.? I thought I read it should be something around 90w (?)
Any suggestions.?

Hi Scott,
Check the KPA3 settings in the CONFIG menu
to be sure the 100 watt PA is not bypassed.
If the KPA3 is set to PA NOR in the CONFIG
menu, then you may have a diode failure
in the PIN diode T/R switch or the PA bypass
PIN diode switch.

From the "Troubleshooting" section of the K3 manual:

If this was suggested before, I missed it and apologize for the redundancy.
Has the rig inadvertently been put into the test mode? If the TX indicator
under the VFO A box is blinking, that would explain the symptoms.

Don,
Have you tried transmitting at 10 watts, and do you get RF output? Do you
also loose receive when you pass the 12 watt threshold? If you have any of

Help:
I had similar trouble related to the synthesizer boards on a K3. On the newer
KSYN3A boards there is a green LED on the top edge of the board that should be
ON if the board is working ok. You mentioned a sub RX so you should have two of
these boards mounted against the back of the front panel.
Elecrafters,
i'm on vacation at a /p qth and K3 #2878 has quit working.
I have no power out. The display reads 0.0 watts when holding the tune
button, regardless of mode.
In RX I hear noise from the headphones , but no signals. The noise
sounds like the K3 sounds when no antenna is attached.
The manual indicates that you should contact K3 support and give then
that number.

You might set up a command macro that switches antennas and changes power
levels, using the AN and PC commands.

First I would suggest using Line In and use DATA mode (AFSK A submode),
select Line In in the MIC SEL menu.
Set the K3 into TX TEST (or set the power down and operate into a dummy

I haven't used my K3 in a couple of weeks, but the thought of working
some Au tonight got me going. I turned on the radio, connected the
antenna and I could only get 5 or 6 watts out with the PA and 0.1
watts under the 12W setting. The power didn't vary at all with the
power control, except
into a dummy load with
the ATU bypassed and an indicated SWR of 1.1-1. I'm thinking that one of the
