Jaci, I'm so soory to hear about BB Thankfully he lost his fight in your arms. Many do not, as they die alone or away from their loved ones. I know as I lost my TAZ when he was recovering from extensive surgery. I didn't get to say good-bye to him. So you can imagine how that felt. It was so sudden BB is now where he is healthy and playing with the butterflies with the other kitties. He has been greeted by my TAZ and others that have gone to the Rainbow Bridge. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I've been on this group forever even though at this moment I do not have any FELV kitties it could change at any given time. As I've stated many times this group is vital for information this is why I'm still here. So please remain and don't leave. Give yourself some healing time and take care. [Felvtalk] OT: My Mother went to the Rainbow Bridge
Hello everyone, I'm letting everyone know this is part of my grieving and makes me feel little better. To let you know the situation if I don't respond right away to prior emails. Another email was sent to all the rescues groups of the same wording. Many of you have ask about my mother and sent many prayers by emails, phone calls, also in person to my mother and myself. With great sadness in my heart today my mother passed away this morning. As she wished she wants to be cremated and be buried with my father. I spent many hours with her the last few days only home long enough to feed and do litter boxes. She was an avid animal lover especially when it came to cats and kittens. She was a reputable breeder from the 60's to early 80's. Her breed was Siamese and Persian cats. In the last 20 years she chose to take homeless and rescue kitties into her home. They were given very much needed love and care. When she would come to visit me as she was in a convalescent home during the last year she would get her kitty fixes by coming to my home. She would call all of the rescue cats and kittens to her along with my personal kitties. So she could be around them all and give them plenty of love. She took such pleasure in this. She would spoil them greatly. Even feeding them such as turkey, chicken, and beef when she could get away with it. Her services will be at a later date. I will let you all know. My brother is putting article in the local newspaper about her within the next day or two. Thanks again for all your support in the past and present regarding my mother! [Felvtalk] OT: Puppy Mills in WA.
Hi everyone, I'm sure by now you have heard of all the different raids of the puppy mills here in Washington. We are rank 1st in Puppy Mills as I hate to say. I've been waiting a long time for this to happen. Finally after years something has been done. I live about 4 miles from the first raid. There are 3 different people involved with this. A mother and 2 daughters possibly an aunt as well. Mind you these people live in very nice homes. So they made their money from the puppies/dogs. The first raid consisted of 155 dogs/puppies of the small breeds, 4 cats, 6 large dogs, and a few birds. City of Goldbar. Second raid consisted of over 100 dogs/puppies. City of Snohomish. Third raid had over 400 dogs/puppies, few cats, livestock and horses that were extremely underweight. City of Mount Vernon. Many of these dogs are being sheltered in the local shelters and foster homes (Everett/Mount Vernon) and the fairgrounds in Skagit County. Some have been euthanized there was nothing the Vets could do because they were beyond medical help. They are all matted and have sores all over their bodies. Many of them have defects that comes with inner breeding. Malnourished and underweight. They had to live in their own waste. I've seen some of these dogs it made me want to puke because of the smell and the sight of them. It made me so mad that I wanted to kill these breeders for allowing this to h appen to these innocent animals. Mind you this is a family ran business. Sorry, I don't have the direct links right now. If you pull up the news and newspapers for WA. it will show some of what has happened regarding these raids. Not all information will be displayed. I don't need to read or hear as I know what's been happening but nothing could be done. Let's hope and pray some good and justice will come out of this for the dogs/puppies sakes. Guess it made ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, and MSNBC of course the local media. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: there's no such thing as very very very, or very very or very positive, or faint positive: there is positive, or there is negative. give me a couple of days and i will even be able to give you the reference from a far more reputable source than myself, because i just found it for sure the other day. i believe the wording, as some of us have less elegantly stated it before, was that the spot responds with coloration, or no coloration. if you've never seen a snap-type ELISA test, it might not make that much sense, but it's a little piece of paper that has dots in different places that are treated to respond to different antigens or antibodies or test solution: it doesn't measure how MUCH, or how RECENT, or any of that, it just says that yes, that particular whatever IS there. i have never seen, anywhere, any reference to the color having any quantifiable value, especially considering the nature of the test: you HAVE to read the dots at a specific time period after the test is started, or it is not valid, as the paper can continue to react past that time. so if the FeLV circle has NO COLOR at 10 minutes or whatever the specific test specifies, the test result is NEGATIVE. ten minutes later, for those vets who forgot to set the timer (doing snap tests incorrectly is one of the top ten mistakes vets admit to) that same circle may actually show color. the cat is NOT positiive, because the accurate testing period is OVER. so a light spot at 10 minutes is as positive as a dark spot at 10 minutes is, either -- it's the existence of color, at the specific time that counts. do vets not realize this? i'm not sure. i don't remember the last time i read the idexx instructions, but they're pretty detailed, and i don't think they were unclear. so i'm not sure if vets are trying to cushion the blow, knowing that one should never take the results of a single test, especially an ELISA, as the final determinant, they haven't read the instructions themselves in years, or well, it LOOKS lighter, and they've just forgotten whatever they knew about the underlying science of the test. Hi all, Sorry I haven't posted much these days. I've been busy as hell in rescue. Cats/kittens are coming out of the woodwork! The fact my mother is dying as well. Doctors are only giving her 1-3 months to live. She is still young (66 will be 67 on August 2nd) If she hangs on we will be throwing a B-B-Q Birthday for her. She had us kids when she was young and still got her education as she promised my grandparents. My parents were in the military and retired Lab/Dog and Siamese Cat breeders. They were respected and recognized in WA. state. We traveled the world as youngsters as well. I'm 50 years old. I wanted to let those of you know I'm so sorry to hear of your precious kitties that have went to the bridge. The day will come when you will be together again. For you new members this is the best group of people to get support and knowledge from. They have helped me with my FELV kitties and Non-FELV kitties. Thank you to those that have decided to let their kitties live regardless of what their Vets have said. I have to tell you I have mix both Felv/Non-Felv kitties in my home. Nobody that was negative has died from FELV. They died of old age or other illnesses. I do get their vaccinations when needed. There are some that do separate the Felvs from the Non-Felvs on this group. Anyway enjoy your kitties. Many can live for years then others like my Taz didn't make it pass 2 years old. Good food and love is the key factor here. Hi all, A few years ago some of you older members may remember Ling. As he is no longer with me as he had passed on to the bridge. For you newer members. I took in a male Siamese that was 19 yrs old that had the same thing. All of his claws on his front paws were in the flesh. So he the had surgery done ASAP immediately right there. When I got him I had noticed he was walking funny. Then I look at his paws thought to myself Oh My God there was no way I could do anything. I can't imagine the pain he was in. Poor old fella. I have to tell you though when it was done he was like a kitten again shortly after surgery. I end up losing him after a year to kidney failure but at least he had some happiness and medical care from me that he wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. Well I won't be taking Snowy in for spaying this coming week. I went to clip her nails tonight and noticed that there was a big lump on her right paw. When I touched it she meowed so I got her into the emergency vet. They told me I did nothing wrong that this had happened to her over a very long period of time. Her nail had grown into her skin, along with hair and they had to put her under and remove it. It had grown far into her pad and couldn't be removed easily. I don't get this. She had seen 2 vets prior to our getting her and no one noticed this. Now the poor little thing has to be on antibiotics (Clindamycin) and wear one of those horrible hood things so she won't lick her paw. She had a piece taken out of it and cauterized. I am so sorry for what this poor little dear has been through in her short life. I just hope all this trauma doesn't cause her herpes virus to resurface. The first thing the vet did when we got her there was to squirt eye wash into her eyes and she got all upset. I kind of yelled at him for doing that and asked why. He said she looks like she has allergies and I said she's a persian their eyes tear. Fortunately there was a very knowledgeable technician present who seemed to know a lot more than this guy did. I totally agree with Gloria. Everyone has been exposed too late on separating them. There is no such thing as a light positive. It is either positive or negative. I can honestly say that I had positives and negatives live together for years. I vaccinated the negatives every year. Not one of the negatives died from FELV they died of other Feline illnesses. The pilot study will follow the same procedures and be conducted in the same manner as a larger follow-up study using 100+ FeLV positive cats. The larger study will be conducted if the pilot study shows good results. Good results from the pilot study could expedite federal approval for a larger study – which Dr. Levy would supervise. The larger 100+ cat study will prove conclusively that the drug cures, or does not cure, FeLV. The drug’s manufacturer will supply the drug to us for both studies (at no charge) and will supervise the pilot study (with the results forwarded to Dr. Levy). No harm will come to the cats. The drug is safe and there are no known side effects. For the last two weeks I’ve been looking for a location to conduct the pilot study (we can’t do it at the sanctuary). Once we find a place, I can put a final budget together. We will need to raise money for the pilot study and if we proceed to the bigger study, we’ll have to raise money for that, too. Donors to either study will receive a tax deduction. If the drug does cure FeLV, 10th Life will receive a royalty on each sale of the drug because (1) we are raising the necessary research funds (the manufacturer’s research budget is for human - not animal – trials), and (2) we will be supplying the FeLV+ cats. We will probably need more FeLV+ cats. In a few days I’ll know if we need more FeLV+ cats and will ask you, then, if you have, or know someone who has, FeLV+ cats that could participate in the pilot study. Most FeLV+ cats are routinely put down by their owners... this research is necessary because, if the drug cures FeLV, many lives will be saved. In the meantime, please continue to support us with a donation... I spend most of my time raising operating funds and now that I’m spending a lot of time trying to get this study underway, I am not out there raising operating funds. Lynne Bob, As I have been trapping cats and kittens in my area that are feral. Sorry for the delay of my condolences. This is a horrible disease especially if they have possible FIP on top of it. I have to tell you I did lose a fur-baby over a year ago to FIP. So I know the feeling all to well. I wanted to respond to this as I have been reading all the postings on your precious baby BooBoo. You gave him a home and very much needed love as he wouldn't have gotten if he had been in a shelter or roaming somewhere. BooBoo also knew how much the both of you loved him and wanted what was best for him. As he loved you too. I'm so sorry to hear about him as I felt like he was right here in my home. This breaks my heart when I hear about news like this. Your information about him was so clear and to the heart. Great Vets too that were willing to go the extra mile for you. You both were blessed with him even though it was a short time. God must have needed him as I know another fur-angel will be sent to you soon. I know this is quite fresh to you. It is normal to shed the tears for Boo-Boo. I have to say I did as well because I have grown to know him. I continue to shed tears on my loss but because of him being gone I'm stronger even though it's never easy losing one. This will make you stronger and more knowledgeable about FELV and other terrible Feline diseases. I know it doesn't feel like it right now but time is what eases the pain. Always remember the good and positive times. I hope you will continue to stay on the list as like many of us old timers even if you don't have a FELV kitty. At this time I don't have FELV kitty I have been on this list since 2001. You learn a lot from this group of caring people whether it's FELV or not. Your BooBoo has been greeted all the others that have pass and went to the Rainbow Bridge. I believe we will be with our furbabies when it is time for us to move on. Hi all, I use Wood Pellets for my rescues and Fresh Step for my personal cats. When it is time to dispose of the dirty litter that consist of the pellets I take it outside and dump it all over in the back. I live on 3 acres it is absorbed into the ground and it also fertilizes the area for the wild life passing through. Wood Pellets are cheap and smell good too. (#40 sacks) I will hit the feed store and buy their damaged bags at 75% off the regular price $4.50 this is a great deal because the bags are barely tore then they seal it with tape. The Fresh Step is thrown into the garbage can. I just got another litter of kittens that have the big C wordYAY for me! One has already died today. I noticed it had blood in his stools and was bleeding inside. I know that smell and the color was yellow...yuck! One isn't looking so hot but drinking and eating. Others are doing well and playing. They came from a kill shelter from unknown sources. Hi all, Okay, here is the deal: I rescued a mama with 5 kittens (4 weeks old) at a kill shelter. Oh ChrisI'm so sorry to hear this! Kaylee will be in my thoughts and prayers totally. This isn't something to stomach very well as I know. But there are cats/kittens that do make it through the surgery without any complications. Miracles do happen! My experience with this is you become a nervous wreck over this. Sorry for being straight forward about this. It's not easy dealing with something of this nature. Please read my pet memorial below my Angel Taz he had the same thing. I use Olive Oil when I don't have that I used pure vegetable oil. It works but do steer away after doing this as they will shake their heads after you rubbed in their ears. YUCK! My suggestion is get the kitty in to be checked out by your Vet. Because you never know...second guessing doesn't matter. I've never heard of a Vet removing dead tissue around the eyes unless there was prior surgery in the area. I recently rescued a male Siamese/Birman from a smaller rescue that had a eye problem. I noticed it was purple and his right side of his face was whitish looking. Also, with Purebred Siamese even Siamese mix cats/kittens when they are ill or have something wrong with them they tend to get lighter colors around their face especially around their eyes. Normally the first signs with my experience. Being around Siamese all my life I've learned a lot about them and still learning. (almost 50 yrs) I questioned the smaller rescue as to why they didn't get the eye treated right away instead of worrying whether he was neutered or not. Anyway, the following morning of his Vet visit to be checked out his eye burst. Then came the oozing and pus. My husband about passed out when he saw this. So needless to say there was nothing we could do for this kitty's eye. His eye was removed and was on antibiotics for 7 days. You look at him now and see the his natural colors coming back around the face. By the way he is a huge Siamese/Birman (18 pounds still blooming) and a total love-bug! Also, want to include he was accused of getting all the female cats in his old neighborhood pregnant. (He was already neutered so the joke is on the neighborhood they got the wrong cat) He isn't going back!!! When he is totally better will be adopted out to a family that will love him. Sherry, My god I'm so sorry about this precious Beautiful girl. She had Jen there to help her. God only knows what her life would have been like if she didn't come into yours. At least you were able to spend time with her before she left. She will be waiting for you when the time comes. (Many of you heard me say this numerous times over the course of years) I do believe that we will be joined with our furangels at the Bridge. I have to tell you I have one just like her. Her name is Bugs real name is Missy but she never took to it. It's almost like looking at identical kitties. My Bugs is 6 yrs old now. She is dainty and don't take no crap from the males in the home. Got fire in her butt. She was a rescue at the age 5 weeks when a local shelter closing down was going euthanized animals. I end up stealing her and her brother. He is a big long hair black boy when I say big he is big. (18 pounds) But afraid of a lot of things. Husband calls him Chickenshit but he is still his Beau(his name...second to Vinnie/Vincent the Balinese) Yes, I may be a Siamese Rescue but I have other kitties in my home besides Siamese. I send you lots of hugs and headbutts from my gang. Please take care of yourself as I know what your going through it is never easy losing one we love so much. And his girlfriend wasn't used to the concept of pets, for some reason (that was how he explained it to me) due to the part of China that she was originally from. Boots would insist on always being in between them when they would be on the couch, etc. Anyway, Boots would be visited by me 3 times perday when he was out of town and 2 of those times it would be for her meals (whipped Pet Guard or Wellness w/ her meds purified water added, and it had to be warmed up in a double sausepan.) She also recieved fluids. Boy, did he love this cat, only client I ever had that insisited on me removing my shoes when I entered his home, he did not want any germs to be brought into her from my other clients or my own cats. (Now I have a policy where I always remove my shoes or wear the nurse booties. I liketo respect people's homes) When Boots finally was in her last leg of her journey on earth, she could not walk and had to be carried everywhere. I of course, would need to clean her up,because she could not make it to the box. She was still so alert tho, and she was eating great. On the night that she died, he knew her time had come. He stayed up w/her all night, and about 4am he passed out from exhaustion for just a few moments, when he woke up, she was gone. We believe that she needed to go, but could not as long as he was awake. And the interesting part was, this cat was the last of 3 cats that he inherited from his ex wife when she died. I don't know any details, I never ask clients, I just let them talk and tell me what they feel they need to. When his wife died, she was buried in a pet cemetary w/ her other cats out of state. Her reasoning was that she always liked respected animals more than people,so she choose to be buried amoung them. Angela, I'm so sorry to hear about your boy. Had he been re-tested recently for Felv? Normally, it is the secodary illnesses that take our Felv kids. Such as different cancers. Due to their weak immune systems. Did he have a biopsy done prior indicate what kind of cancer he had? How old was your boy? What are the ages of the kitties living in your house? I'm sorry for asking these questions but it does have bearing. If everyone has been together for 3 years you would have seen signs long before now if they were infected. Yes, Felv can lay dormant in the bone marrow even when they are tested young. As I know this for a fact. It has happened to one of my cats. It takes a cold or respiratory illness (URI) to bring it on even though they may have tested negative prior when healthy. That is why when you get kittens from unknown sources they should be retested every 3 months up to they are adults for accuracy. Adults should be tested yearly. I've had numerous Vets say most tests done as kittens are not accurate. When there are more than one kitty living in the house when one dies for unknown reasons a necropsy should be done by your Vet. This subject needs to change! As we all have our opinions. I remain neutral as I understand both sides of this matter. This list is suppose to be geared towards our cats and kittens. I have been on this a long time I have to say I've never seen so much OT Subjects lately. We don't need to lose anymore of the old members here. Some have already left due too much OT matter. Some have left to go to the other Felv group. I think James would agree with me. Since he is the Moderator/Owner of this list. I know he has been ill lately. This list was started in memory of his precious kitty to help Felv kitties. There are some here that have great success with different protocols. Then with others it doesn't work. I agree with what has been said in prior postings. When anyone surrenders a pet to a City/County shelter your rights end there. Some will work with you because the less they have to do the better. This is pretty wide spread through out the U.S. In some cases like different Humane Societies will have you fill out a form asking if you would like the pet back if owner can't be found. Then they would call you back. Most of the time you would pay the adoption fee which would include altering the pet if it hasn't been done so plus getting the vaccinations as needed. Otherwise the pet gets put up for adoption through their organization. If it is a Feral cat or just scared they have resources for this. This may include other rescues or interested foster homes. I use this for my dogs. Haven't tried it on the cats or kittens. It comes in the tablet form for them as well as the powder. I've been using it for years. It has been said the neighbor dogs have a problem with fleas and such. I don't see any on my collies. Who knows maybe it does work. I do know it has supplements in it. Kelly, I have people that are trying to call her to help. One person I know has offer her living arrangements. She left a message on one of her phones and couldn't get through on the other. Each time you do your laundry, please take 2 seconds to make sure your cats aren't inside before you hit start. no cat deserves to die a death like my Takarra did. Here is a poem I wrote for Takarra. Cat Nip Mice in Heaven I thought the months would make it easier, That time would heal my wounds- I miss you, my baby girl, with everything in my heart. I wish we were together instead of apart. I thought I could forgive myself for your death- I thought I could let go- I no longer cry each night- It still hurts so badly though. Can I ever forgive myself? Today you would have been one. I feel so bad, so guilty, Your life had just begun. Are there cat nip mice in heaven? I look up at night to see if you're playing among the stars. In my mind, I wonder if you found your way to the rainbow bridge, And in my heart I wonder if my wounds will ever become merely scars. I know it was just a mistake that God took you from me. Maybe he needed you more than I? Do you sit in his lap and purr? Or do you look down at me and cry? I know I look up often and hope you're watching over me- Some days it's harder than others to deal with the pain. I look for answers to why you were taken away. And when it storms, I wonder are there kitten tears in the rain? You wrapped your paws around my soul And you left love spots in my heart. You're my angel kitten now. It seems like forever that we've been apart. Enjoy the fields of butterflies. Until we are together again, Enjoy the Cat tree in the sky, And play with the cat nip mice in heaven.
