I tried Century Schoolbook, size 17, and still have no bold text. (I have no bold fonts with Michele's settings of course). I think I will try installing freetype2, as it seems the most relevants package making a difference between Michele's and mine (although I know nothing about fonts actually).

That sounds right--the explicit "xfree86" dependence is in mozilla-browser-xft2. What I believe happened is that your modified .info file vanished from Fink's knowledge when you switched trees, and you were left with a version that was copied over to the new tree, but still needs modification.
