Think I have used them before. The docs should explain things well. You
probably just need to download some components and then add them to the
beginning of your banner.

I'm still using it, and always get good feedback from clients. I'd
recommend it, although I hadn't considered whether adobe might stop

Re: [Flashcoders] Adobe Flash future

2013-05-14 Thread David Hunter
I think the fact that this list is pretty inactive says it all.

I'm freelancing at an agency right now who I make AIR apps for. I used to
make a lot of them for a few years, but recently I think they are looking
more and more at html5/js solutions. A few years ago I used to make Flash
websites for them, but never any more; then I made AIR apps, and now that
seems on the slide... it's a shame for all the reasons we already know.

The only other work I get with Flash is the occasional banner ad!

I'm sure there are still some niche areas for Flash, but largely it feels
dead from where I sit.

h, how long are you talking it being used for?

I have made apps for samsung galaxy tabs that have run all day and don't
seem to have had too many problems (well not ones they've told me about!)
and I think sometimes they were left on for days and still worked.

But we do include functionality so the user can quit the app within the app

Re: [Flashcoders] Actionscript lives on.

2012-09-19 Thread David Hunter
I have made loads of AIR apps for tablets and display stands. They are not
for public download, they are all for marketing events that guests at an
event use or trained staff use. I use Flash CS5.5 and we normally use
Samsung tablets as compiling to Android is so much quicker and easier than
to iOS, and it is easy to pull data off the device. The company I work for
on those apps is really happy with the speed and flexibility. I would love
to work on an app that was actually available in a store to download by the
public.

Having said that If I am also looking at web apps and experimenting with
jQuery Mobile and CSS media queries, and I try to avoid flash when making
websites.

I agree with others about Actionscript 3 being a fantastic language that
should have a continued life. And Adobe need to get some new marketing
people— they have handled all of this so badly!

Best,

David

Re: [Flashcoders] Loader Mouse Event

2012-06-11 Thread David Hunter
There must be something else going wrong with your code.

This works fine for me, you can paste it straight into a new project
and test it:

import flash.net.URLRequest;
import flash.display.Loader;
import flash.events.MouseEvent;

var url:String = "http://www.gogo-tennis.com/images/Tennis%20Balls_small.jpg";;
var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
ldr.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, rollOverListener);
ldr.load(req);
addChild(ldr);

function rollOverListener(e:MouseEvent):void
{
//
trace("hit!");
}

[Flashcoders] Get Timezone City?

2012-05-16 Thread David Hunter
Hi All,

I'm making a screensaver / air app of a clock and one of the desired
features is to grab the city of the timezone that the computer is set to.
For example my clock is set to GMT and London, but I could set it to
Eastern Daylight Time and the city to New York or Miami.

Does anyone know if it is possible to grab the city selected associated
with the time of the computer? (I'm on a mac, not sure if the setup is the
same on a PC...)

Thanks,

David

Unfortunately that Screensaver For Mac doesn't seem to work for me. Their
demo files don't even work. I'm on OS X 10.6.8 .

Can someone on another system (or even the same) test it to see if it
works? Only need to download and double-click the .saver file to test.

Big thanks in advance,

David

Re: [Flashcoders] AIR Screensaver?

2012-03-13 Thread David Hunter
Hmmm changing it to .saver isn't working, it comes up grey in System
Preferences and when you select it drops a message box "You cannot use the
Flash Player screen saver on this computer". I'm on OS X version 10.6.8 .
Similar message if I try just an swf not a projector.

It's in the same folder as the ones I made in Quartz Composer, and they
work fine.

[Flashcoders] AIR Screensaver?

2012-03-12 Thread David Hunter
Hi All,

Anyone have any advice on making screensavers from Flash? I have seen some
decent looking software
http://www.screentime.com/software/flash-screensaverto convert an swf
into a screensaver but it is quite pricey, I didn't have
any luck with a mac open source alternatives, so I was wondering if it was
possible with AIR? I would need it to function fully as a screensaver eg.
be activated by user idle timeouts / hot corners etc...

Thanks,

David

Re: [Flashcoders] MVC style Correction

2012-03-07 Thread David Hunter
Hi all,

Really pleased that my original question has generated so much positive
discussion, debate and learning on MVC. For me it has certainly shed some
light on different ways to implement it and probably some improvements or
different approaches I could take in the future.

Currently I connect them all together exactly as Ross has his set up in his
first example. Although I may experiment with some slightly different
approaches or try out a framework.

Regards,

David

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash Platform roadmap released - time to start learning HTML 5 unless you make games.

2012-02-23 Thread David Hunter
I have pretty much given up on Flash for websites or web applications.

I have two kinds of clients: small clients who want a portfolio website or
something similar scale, and then the agency clients where my work is all
marketing work. Marketing people are o b s e s s e d with iphones / ipads
and facebook so if it doesn't play nicely with them then forget it. I used
to make Flash websites or Flash elements on websites for marketing agencies
but since about two years ago I have not done anything web-based for them,
it is all AIR apps for desktop and tablets. I actually prefer making AIR
apps than websites.

Reluctantly accepting the need to move on I am learning JS (which feels
like going back to AS2) and brushing up on my HTML & CSS, I'm also learning
ModX framework for building content managed sites. I'm pretty sold on ModX.
Small clients always wanted a CMS but could never cough up enough for a
bespoke system and I never found one that worked with Flash so had to use
XML files, which most clients found difficult to manage themselves. So
getting a backend framework has been a positive from this; and making AIR
apps which I wanted to do before AIR ever existed and I made projector
files. But otherwise I am disappointed the way it is unravelling for Flash.
I'm sure Adobe could have handled the media better on this.

I was at an Adobe HTML 5 conference last year and they definitely see HMTL
5 for all web stuff, and Flash for apps and gaming. That roadmap seems to
suggest it is very game heavy. I don't really play computer games and I
haven't made one either so not sure how I feel about that.

For what its worth I really like AS3 and I hope it stays, if Flash dies on
the web though then there is no hope of JS getting an upgrade to be like
AS3 as there will be no competition, no incentive.

I'm off to do some banner ads... (seriously!)

[Flashcoders] MVC style

2012-02-15 Thread David Hunter
Hello list,

If I am making an application with MVC pattern and calculations are needed
to be performed on the data when the user interacts with the application,
would you:

do the calculations in the Model?

create a separate class that handles the calculations and puts the results
in the model?

do the calculations in the Controller?

looking forward to hearing people's thoughts on this,

david

Re: [Flashcoders] re: Natavi's example photo gallery

2012-01-12 Thread David Hunter
I built a site with an interface just like that a few years ago. Wasn't too
difficult from memory although it was an achievement to complete. You just
load a grid of thumbs into a container, enlarge and reposition the
container til the enlarged thumb fills the screen height, and load the
hi-res version of the thumb in the correct position and size.

hope that helps,

I did something similar before, but we just had parameters passing into a
python backend that recreated all the graphics.

I googled "as3 save svg" but no idea if the below works. As the guy says
you'd still need to send it to something like php to save it on server if
your project is web-based:

hope that helps.

Due to impending deadline (started project on Tuesday and need it delivered

it working with 5 eventually. I've messaged the guy who put the post up about
getting AIR2.7 into CS5 and he has made alterations which I have yet to
implement. Hopefully those changes will allow me to target Android from CS5.

Re: [Flashcoders] PlayBook

Thanks John, I'll check that out. I have files publishing directly onto the
Galaxy Tab directly from Flash 5.5(trial) pretty seamlessly.

However I can't seem to get applicationStorageDirectory to work in AIR
anymore. I've used it before for application settings xml files with not too
much problem. If I include a txt or jpeg file in the included files option
it includes them in the app ok but when I try to find them:

var myFile:File =
File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("localstorage/test.jpeg");
if(myFile.exists) {
...do something.
}

when running the application it returns false.

am I being stupid? any ideas?

Cheers,

David

it says in the video this should not be an issue for Macs. It also said this
on forum post ( http://forums.adobe.com/message/3564584#3564584 ) that USB
drivers shouldn't be a problem.

Re: [Flashcoders] PlayBook

2011-06-21 Thread David Hunter
Sounds interesting. I tried to replace the AIK2.0 in CS5 with the new AIR2.7
SDK but the app wouldn't compile and the adl wouldn't launch properly. I
used this as a guide: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/908/cpsid_90810.html . I will
give it another go though. Any tips on replacing the SDK greatly
appreciated.

Thanks Kevin.

Thanks for the links Beatrix, I will check them out. But right now I need
help with compiling for Android!

(I'm talking with someone from Adobe now, and they don't sound keen to give
me a free upgrade to 5.5)

And yes Kevin, 4 months away from the computer was bliss!

Re: [Flashcoders] PlayBook

2011-06-21 Thread David Hunter
is there no way of doing it with Flash Professional CS5 or Flashbuilder 4.0
? I am on a mac so Flash Develop is not really an option.

I find it mind boggling that adobe would give away the Android extension for
free and then remove it and make you pay for it. I only got CS5 six months
ago.

Re: [Flashcoders] PlayBook

2011-06-21 Thread David Hunter
Thanks Jason,

Guessed that would be the case.

I was badly briefed and the app is an AIR for Android app to run on a
Samsung Galaxy TAB. Do I need to get CS5.5 to compile for Android? I have
CS5 but there is no mention of an Android packager only the iPhone packager.
I'm sure I was shown that you could compile Android apps from Flash CS5.

I saw online there was an Android extension by adobe but they have taken it
down since the release of CS5.5.

Thanks all,

[Flashcoders] PlayBook

2011-06-21 Thread David Hunter
Hi All,

Hope you are all well. I have just returned to work after a 4 month break
seeing a little of the other side of the world. I have been asked to make a
Blackberry Playbook app with AIR (it just got released in the UK) and hoping
for any pointers anyone has- particularly if I NEED to get FlashBuilder 4.5
or if I can use FlashBuilder 4 / Flash CS5 (which I already have)? If you
have a CS5 suite do you get a free upgrade to CS5.5?

Cheers,

Thanks for the links Karl, my server is running PHP 5.2.16 and their server is
running PHP 5.2.5 . So I'll be giving their hosting company call to see what
the problem could be.
Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

Thanks Karl, I have downloaded your file and will have a look at it. Having
tried two other form examples I found online with still the same Error #2101
results, I moved the PHP to my server and it works fine. So Karl, you may be
right that it is something to do with the PHP version or a glitch with the
server. Very confusing.

Thanks Karl, can't seem to download the file, it just opens a String of
gobbeldy-gook in a new browser window. Can you put the php file inside a zipped
folder and lose the ".php.zip" so its only ".zip" in the url? I will look into

RE: [Flashcoders] error 2101 urlvariables decode

2011-01-18 Thread David Hunter

Thanks for the response Karl. the php version is 5.2.5 and I don't think it
changed recently. It seems lots of people are reporting this problem with
CS4/CS5 and FP10. none of the solutions on google seem to be helping. I have
tried encoding the URLLoader.data as variables and as text, on the php side i
have tried echoing "sentOk=" .sentOk, "&sentOk=", "?sentOk=", "sentOk=true",
"success". Either an #2101 error is pulled when using variables, when using
text no error occurs but the php doesn't send the email. Has anyone run into
this problem? Or has an example of sending and returning vars with a php script
that they know works in CS5 with AS3 for comparison. This is doing my head
in!!!
Thanks in advance

[Flashcoders] error 2101 urlvariables decode

2011-01-18 Thread David Hunter

Happy New Year everyone!
Recently updated a site that has a registration form which is now throwing an
error. I didn't change anything to do with the form. It now throws an error
#2101: The String passed to URLVariables.decode() must be a URL-encoded query
string containing name/value pairs.
I've looked on google and there seems to be some conflict whether it is a
problem with the flash side or PHP side. I know that this has only occurred
since updating another section of the site. I am now using CS5 but I was
previously on CS3. I have tried changing my URLLoaderDataFormat.VARIABLES to
TEXT and it throws a different error #1069: Property sentOk not found on String
and there is no default value. (sentOk is the name of the variable I echo back
from the php to know that an email has been sent).
A snippet of the flash code is here: http://pastebin.com/pTzZKkMS The PHP code
that handles the signup is here: http://pastebin.com/FzbMdB7e
The site has been running fine for over a year with pretty much the same
actionscript code, the PHP side hasn't changed in years, this error only crept
in 3 days ago. It doesn't just throw an error but also fails to send an email
from the php side.
Any and all help greatly appreciated,
David

RE: [Flashcoders] CS5 where to put tween engines etc?

2010-09-30 Thread David Hunter

thanks for all your prompt advice. i'm ok with keeping my own classes and
packages local to the project. but i don't want to clog up my drive
unnecessarily with the same tween engine over and over. i have tried putting a
folder Flash_Packages in my Documents folder and linking to it in the
Actionscript 3.0 preferences, like your video but code hinting isn't
recognising "import org" what could be wrong?

Thanks Glen. I come from a design background but now spend a lot of my time
coding. So I think I will go for a mix, coding/technical stuff to advance my
knowledge and more arty stuff to inspire me a bit.

Thanks for the link. I also found this:

which doesn't suggest you can update from CS3 only CS4. I have followed the
steps for CS4 and it still doesn't compile the new classes.

[Flashcoders] AIR HTMLLoader mouse events not working

2010-09-03 Thread David Hunter

hi all,
I'm making a touchscreen kiosk application. its all done except for a timer
that returns to a start screen when it is inactive for more than a couple
minutes. I'm monitoring activity using MOUSE_MOVE event. that works fine except
when using an instance of HTMLLoader where it doesn't seem to pick up mouse
moves or even mouse downs or clicks. I have set the useCapture parameter to
'true' and that has solved the problem on my Mac laptop, but the problem still
persists when the app is installed on the kiosk machine with touchscreen. Not
sure if this is to do with the OS or the touchscreen or something else?
Any help greatly appreciated,

RE: [Flashcoders] Facebook API GetPhotos not working

2010-08-16 Thread David Hunter

Thanks for the suggestion Steven. I've spent a week trying to work with
Facebook and the best I have managed is an AIR app using the
actionscript-facebook api with AIR CONNECT. I can successfully log in and allow
extended permissions and upload a picture from a webcam. I'm reasonably happy
with that. Although I can't seem to grant regular permissions to access a
user's photos. Do you know how this is done? I have had a quick go with Graph
API (just making URLLoader calls and ignoring the actionscript api) and I can
get an access token but I'm getting errors trying to grant access to
user_photos as I'm not passing a redirect_uri as a parameter. But as its an AIR
app I don't want/need a redirect so what should I be doing? Do I need to switch
this back to a web based app rather than desktop app to use this method? In
which case logging in might become an issue again! Thanks for your help, David

Juan, thanks for the thorough response, and I fully agree that they seem to
have changed things a lot and this has really annoyed developers. I'm pretty
fed up already after 1 day of going in circles. I looked through bug 146 before
but i am going back over it again. It seems I need to extend my permissions and
add < user_photos > but after reading through 6 pages of docs on this I'm still
pretty confused! Even in the docs they are mentioning the "migrations" tab and
enabling "New Data Permissions" but this option does not exist! I'll re-post if
I get anywhere or run into new difficulties, or just give up! Thanks

[Flashcoders] Facebook API GetPhotos not working

2010-08-10 Thread David Hunter

Hi List, . Anyone have any experience with the Facebook API? I have been on it
all day and got a simple application (based on the tutorial on adobe's site) to
work which fetches the users information such as name and mini-photo, and other
calls like listing their friends. But when it comes to getting their photos,
GetPhotos() it always returns an array of zero length. Does anyone have any
knowledge on this? . I have seen lots of complaints about this issue on the
forums, but much of the advice suggests changing parameters that don't exist in
the application settings anymore. I'm not sure if the problem is a permissions
thing set in the app, a permissions thing set by the user (i have made my
photos completely public and still no change), if i am lacking a session key,
or something else. I imagine/hope its something simple. I've tried running as a
desktop app and on an external webpage but it still won't return any photos.
I'm using Flash CS5 and the latest version of the Facebook library (v3.4).
Unfortunately most of the examples are in Flex, which I don't have, and I
haven't found a tutorial or snippet for straight Actionscript that uses
GetPhotos() .. I've been tearing my hair out all evening and not got very far.
Any help is greatly appreciated. . Thanks,David

RE: [Flashcoders] Create your own t-shirt

2010-08-05 Thread David Hunter

I second that approach. I made a label maker that plugged into a python backend
and then on to their printer workflow. I only sent string data of the text they
entered, plus font choice, color, position, and what background imagery they
chose. If you could 'free draw' your own illustration then I guess we would
have sent that as an array, but maybe there is a better way to send it, I'm not
sure. The python turned the data into an SVG format for printing. Hope that
helps.

i think the regular expression is to strip out unwanted characters like
punctuation. comparing strings would be done by another process.

String.replace() then a regular expression like /[,\.!\?:;\\\/]/g and replace
it with nothing: "". You'll probably want to check which characters to remove
but remember to use an escape slash for certain characters. Haven't tried it
but there are some examples and lots of help in the docs and more online. not
that knowledgeable on regular expressions to be honest.

RE: [Flashcoders] How to handle String the best way

2010-07-22 Thread David Hunter

Not entirely sure if i understand what you want to do, but you could use a
regular expression to strip out any punctuation or unwanted characters.
String.split() breaks a string into an array of strings by using a specified
delimiter which could be a " " space in this situation, so each word is an
element in an array.
Apply this process to both your strings and you end up with two arrays which
should be easy to compare words and cycle through all the elements. Hope that
helps, but I've probably misunderstood what you want to do! David

RE: [Flashcoders] AIR flv encoder

2010-07-21 Thread David Hunter

I have red5 up a running both on a server and installed locally- great product.
I have the demo SimpleRecorder working and have had a look through the code
(which is in AS2, so I' rewriting it in AS3) but despite tinkering with the
settings the video is choppy with erratic framerate that hangs badly and the
audio lags. I have tried different settings[[ from cam.setQuality(0,100)
through to cam.setQuality(32000,0) and various framerates from 12-25, and
buffer amounts up to 10secs ]], all with little affect on how smooth and
regular the flv is when played back using an application eg. VLC. Any
recommendations on settings? Can you adjust anything on the red5 side of things
to improve the framerate consistency and tighten the audio? Thanks, David

RE: [Flashcoders] OT: Adobe Air Marketplace

2010-07-19 Thread David Hunter

I put an item on and didn't have any problems. Except when I tried to cash in
my free developers certificate they were offering- they couldn't give it to me
as my trading name is the same as my real name (self-employed in the UK). So
they suggested I change my business name (!!!) and therefore all my business
cards and websites etc just to satisfy their form for a free one year
certificate! Oh well.
For what its worth, Adobe should definitely be making more of that marketplace,
especially considering the rise of Android. I'm sure they will, it could really
take off with all the disaffected Flash people who got scuppered by Apple now
having an outlet for their app ideas.

RE: [Flashcoders] Flash - Django interaction

2010-06-30 Thread David Hunter

Hi there,I work with guys who build all their CMS using python and django and
their preferred method is to send everything as JSON format. There is a JSON
decoder in the AS3 core lib ( http://code.google.com/p/as3corelib/ ) to help
extract the data which I use. Its always me receiving data from them although
we are looking at a project where I would send them data, but we haven't
discussed the technicalities much.
Hope that is of some help,
David

[Flashcoders] fullscreen exe not working!

2010-06-24 Thread David Hunter

Hi all,
I have made a calculator application that must be deployed as a projector .app
and .exe files. When the application launches it goes fullscreen using
fscommand. The .app version has worked fine throughout development (i'm working
on a mac using CS3 and it is programmed in AS3) but the .exe version for PC
does not work in fullscreen mode. Only the background color shows, none of the
rest of the application, but if you escape fullscreen it works fine. I don't
have a PC so this is difficult for me to test!
Has anyone run into this problem before? It seems from google that many people
have reported this problem but I have yet to discover a solution.
I am using these commands:fscommand("fullscreen",
"true");fscommand("allowscale", "false");
Hope someone can help me!
Thanks,
David

[Flashcoders] NetStream.Pause.Notify

2010-05-11 Thread David Hunter

Hi All,
I'm making a video player with netstream and netconnection but
"NetStream.Pause.Notify" is not being picked up in my NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS
listener. It is picking up "NetStream.Buffer.Full" and "NetStream.Play.Start"
is firing when the video loads, so I don't think its anything wrong with my
code. Does anyone have any experience of problems with something similar?
I read on some forum posts that sometimes the NET_STATUS event can be very
delayed when the code is a pause. I am playing back a locally stored
progressive download flv.
Any solutions greatly appreciated,
David

[Flashcoders] letter from Steve Jobs on Flash

2010-04-29 Thread David Hunter

i know there has already been a lot of talk about flash and iphones/ipads and
developer agreements on this list and i don't wish to add unnecessarily or
stoke up the fire again but i thought this might be a worthwhile read for all
from the man at the centre of it all:

RE: [Flashcoders] Interaction between clips and main timeline in AS3.

2010-04-16 Thread David Hunter

Hi,
Seems you may have solved this by turning off strict mode. An alternative way
(depending on how flexible you can be with your program) would be to reverse
your approach and listen to what frame the clip is on (myClip.currentFrame) and
perform functions accordingly. As long as you know what frame you want to
trigger a function, you can do all the programming on the timeline in one
place. I have put an example on pastebin for you to try. MyClip is a 12 frame
animated movieclip in the library. Here is the link: http://pastebin.org/153959
Hope it helps,
David

I 100% agree. If the content looks really appealing and comes with a
recommendation then I think people will be happy to install it. But it is
something to bare in mind when discussing options with a client.

RE: [Flashcoders] current consensus of available Flash 3D engines?

2010-04-11 Thread David Hunter
I actually went to a unity meetup and demo the other week to check it out. Very
impressive, the quality is excellent and you can deliver across many platforms
easily (browser, desktop app, wii, iPhone). The problem with the browser is
less than 1% have the plugin installed compared to 98% for flash. I think you
can use a few different languages in it, pretty sure that includes JavaScript.
Check their website as there is plenty of info on there.

RE: [Flashcoders] @# $% New iPhone Develo per Agreement Bans t he Use of Adobe’s Fl ash-to-iPhone Compil er

2010-04-09 Thread David Hunter

Wow that is a depressing end to the week and a massive deflation for the launch
of CS5 on Monday which I was really looking to upgrade to as I'm still on CS3.
I got an iPhone a couple months ago on the basis that I might get to do some
development for it. It will be interesting to see how the developer community
reacts to this- from comments on a few different sites/blog posts it seems they
are split down the middle. Some say this is outrageous money-grubbing (and a
kick in the balls for Adobe), too draconian and will harm Apple; others say if
you want to develop for the iPhone OS then you just need to learn the tools ie.
objective-C. I make flash stuff on a MacBook Pro. Right now, I feel dirty...

I found this a useful guide when I switched:

images etc and then just dove in on a paid project. You learn quicker on the

2010-03-22 Thread David Hunter

Thanks Cor,
I've used that sort of call when stopping an flv from playing when closing a
loaded swf. But in this case I need to be able to reconnect the flv again, I'm
not disposing of the FLVPlayback. All I want to do is stop the progressive
download but this seems difficult to do from an instance of FLVPlayback!
Cheers

RE: [Flashcoders] flv stop loading / close netconnection

2010-03-22 Thread David Hunter

Thanks for responding Erik.
Unfortunately I can't use closeVideoPlayer() as it shuts the default player
which isn't allowed. On a side note I can't find anything in the docs on adding
new instances of VideoPlayer Class to an FLV even though there is plenty of
talk of getting different VideoPlayer classes stacked inside an FLVPlayback
instance (eg. myFLVPlayback.getVideoPlayer() or
myFLVPlayback.visibleVideoPlayerIndex ) . Any ideas?
I have temporarily solved the problem with the nastiest workaround ever by
passing "#" as the source. Seems to work for some reason but I'm sure it will
come back and bite me. In the end I may have to make a new instance of
FLVPlayback for each video and kill the old instance.
Thanks,
David
