[Framers] OT: Trouble with an Acrobat pdf file with no source
Everybody is always so smart here, so I thought to ask. I have a 240 page pdf of Steam Combination Oven Cookbook for a Miele oven. The document orginally was made by Miele, but someone unknown inserted a reduced front+back cover as page 2 (which I have now removed to the back of the book). Now the document prints correctly. So the new problem is that a correct display in Acrobat in a Two Page View would be Single First Page, then a display of 2 + 3, 4 + 5, etc. How do I achieve this? (Using Adobe Acobat XI Pro) Thanks, Theresa ___ This message is from the Framers mailing list Send messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com Visit the list's homepage at http://www.frameusers.com Archives located at http://www.mail-archive.com/framers%40lists.frameusers.com/ Subscribe and unsubscribe at http://lists.frameusers.com/listinfo.cgi/framers-frameusers.com Send administrative questions to listad...@frameusers.com

Re: [Framers] Help with setting up a paragraph tag in the TOC
Tammy, I don't remember exactly, but you can make autonumbering remember different series of things. There is some variable like SORT A, SORT B that makes you able to say something like A: B: -Theresa On 3/12/2021 12:28 PM, tamm...@spectrumwritingllc.com wrote: Hi Peter, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I am not trying to recalculate autonumbering in the generated TOC. I am indeed trying to extract the number from the paragraph tag, and I think that is the crux of the matter. SectionNumber is an auto-numbered tag used within a chapter file whereas the tag that immediately follows, SectionTitle, is not auto-numbered. The numbering is not at the file level such as with $Chapnum, so I am probably trying to mix apples and oranges (for lack of a better metaphor). . . trying to extract a paragraph number from one tag and get it assigned to another tag when generating the TOC. I swear I had done this successfully before, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how I did it. . . . I have punted for now and did a little kludging to the SectionTitle paragraph tag to get the number to pop in the TOC. It isn't elegant, but it works. Thanks! Subject: Re: [Framers] Help with setting up a paragraph tag in the TOC Hi, Tammy: The first thing that comes to my senior FM'ers mind is that your TOC formats might be failing because perhaps your scheme is trying to recalculate autonumbering in the generated TOC, instead of simply extracting the numbering from the chapter file paragraphs. I've always been a little worse at trying to debug someone else's problematic autonumbering, than at debugging my own. That's when I referred to various postings and examples. So, I tried a search for "examples of framemaker book autonumbering" and found plenty of old familiar stuff. If you haven't tried it, see if there are any useful memory triggers in the search results. HTH On Thu, Mar 11, 2021 at 5:27 PM wrote: OK, Please have pity on my senior mind. It's been sooo long since I have had to set certain formats up from scratch in Framemaker, that I am just going bonkers trying to remember how I did something before. Here's my current conundrum: On the first page of each chapter, I have the following tags: 1. ChapterNumber, with the numbering set to N:Chapter <$chapnum>. At the book level, I set Chapter Numbering to 1 for the first chapter in the book, and Continue numbering from previous chapter for all subsequent chapters. The tag is set to start at the top of a page. 2. ChapterTitle, which immediately follows ChapterNumber, and is set to Keep with Previous Paragraph. In each of my chapters in a book, I have Sections. The Sections are denoted with a special master page layout that is different from the first page of the chapter. On this page, I use several paragraph tags including the following: 1. Section Number, with the numbering set to the following: S:Section . The tag is set to start at the top of a page. 2. Section Title. This is the tag that immediately follows SectionNumber. This tag is set to keep with the previous paragraph. At the book level, I have paragraph tag numbering to start over for each chapter, so the first time I use SectionNumber in a chapter, it is numbering correctly as Section 1, and then followed by Section 2, etc. For my TOC, I have selected the requisite tags, including ChapterTitle and SectionTitle. 1. For my ChapterTitleTOC tag, here is the format: Chapter <$chapnum>: <$paratext>. . . . .<$pagenum> and I get the following output for example: Chapter 1: Wiggle the Widget. . . . . . 17. I need to set up an analogous SectionTitleTOC tag : Section 1: Section Title contents, Section 2: Section Title contents, etc., and I guess I am missing the boat on this one. I can go through all the iterations that I have tried, but no matter what I try, I wind up with the following: Section: . I cannot get the section number to show up after the word "Section" like I can for ChapterTitle. I am sure it's because the <$chapnum> is a book-level variable vs. paragraph tag numbering for SectionNumber, but I am at a loss to understand any further. If any of you gurus out there can point me to what I am doing wrong, and provide some insight, I would be most appreciative. I had this working ages ago in another manual, but that manual is no longer in my possession, so I can't refer to it for clarification. Publish fails in Frame 12
Seems adobe.com is not frequented by Adobe tech support staff, or at least very often. Where does one go to find answers about Adobe products? I’ll recap my issues: Frame 12.0.3 document, my Fm book began with Frame Standard Template for User Guide. Looks fine in pdf. In Publish pod, am trying to generate an epub. When I first published my fm book to epub, the “publish” process worked correctly and I could read the log report. The epub was not correct however. So, understanding a bit more, I started a new Settings file and I have mapped: HeadingBook to h1 (Heading 1) HeadingVolume to h2 (Heading 2) Heading0 to h3 (Heading 3) Heading1 to h3 (Heading 3) Heading2 to h4 (Heading 4) Heading3 to h5 (Heading 5) all the Heading...TOC files to h6 (Heading 6) and BodyBegin to p.BodyLevel1 BodyContent to p.BodyLevel2 In ALL of the Style Mappings of paratags, NONE of the other tickboxes has been selected (e.g. Exclude from output, Pagination, Autonumber, etc.). Note that I have several fm paratags mapped to one HTML tag. No other paragraph tags or character tags in the fm document has been mapped. Although the process gives me the option to View Output, the output is not correct and I'm still getting MIF: C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP\FileName_A01.mif (5239): Value of Separation out of range (10) (this error is for the whole book) If I publish only one fm file I get MIF: C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp\TPUBTMP\FileName_.mif (5707): Value of Separation out of range (10) One more thought: Niels Grundtvig Nielsen suggested the problem might have to do with colour definitions and he discussed his directly modifying the MIF file which solved *his* problem. Frame 12.0.3 update: fails to import paragraph style
Importing revised paragraph format to other files in book: Although the ending file shows the correct paragraph format name, the contents of the paragraph format are not getting imported. Original paragraph format had 14pt Myriad Pro with bold and colour as CorporateColor_Primary *new* paragraph format was Times Roman 12pt unbolded. Troubleshooting Frame 12's Publish pod
My unstructured Frame book autonumbers correctly, generates TOC, saves to pdf and displays correctly. I’ve minor experience creating html newsletters, so I’ve seen a CSS. I understand enough about ePub to know that a CSS will control formatting. Using Frame 12’s Publish feature, the ePub is generated successfully. The epub has -chapters out of order, -a correct TOC (from fm book files), but an error message when Table of Contents item is clicked on (The file x.htm does not exist) [from Sigil, an ebook publisher, which shows the content of epubs] -a CSS for every file in the book Previously I thought that the left hand (Frame) didn’t know what the right (CSS) was doing, or how elements related to each other, and so I needed to use a structured Frame document to establish the relationship. I’ve been told that’s incorrect. I now understand that Frame 12’s ability to publish to epub, etc. is derived from Robohelp, but it’s been a trillion years since I used Robohelp, so that doesn’t help me. I haven’t had a copy of Robohelp on my machine for decades, so I can’t see this live. In the Publish pod, edit Settings, a Style Mapping dialogue shows all of the current document’s paragraph tags. Selecting one paratag (the left hand) displays a choice of output (the right hand). (I posted the screen images to adobe.com forum here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/6715414#6715414 ) Where does this list of output styles (elements) come from? Adobe’s programmers? An accident of fate? What defines what that format is? Is this where the CSS comes from? Since I’m publishing rubbish, have I inadvertently massaged my Settings file? Where do I find an uncorrupted one? I can understand tweaking a CSS to make it better, but I can’t understand if I haven’t created a CSS in the first place. Ideas or pointers are appreciated. WAS: Structured: about containers, NOW: Publish ePub
Several people have advised me to stick to unstructured Frame for my project, so I’ll comply. To recap: To start my project I used the new Frame 12 templates by Bernard Aschwanden for unstructured user manual because I wanted to learn about how to use Frame in new ways (I had just upgraded from v8). I then built a Frame book for my two crime fiction novellas which generates TOC and publishes to pdf just fine. Originally when I published to epub the chapters came out in a bizarre order, so I thought that the underlying Frame book structure was somehow not coming through to the epub—this is why I thought I had to move to structured Frame. Now onwards. Today, the Publish ePub successfully completes. Looking at the ebook in Sigil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigil_%28application%29) the TOC is completely screwy. Sigil has three panels: files in book, display of selected file contents, and TOC. Clicking on any entry in the TOC produces the error File x does not exist, where x is the fm book component file name. There is also one CSS per file in book, so about 30 of them. Ideas? Structured: about containers, other matter and chapter numbering
Hi Framers, thanks for all the help you’ve given me so far. Naturally, I’ve got some more structured Frame questions. To recap: I’m creating a structured book so that I can create one ebook out of two fiction novellas. I am aware that it’s possible to do this in an unstructured world, but I’m not. In order to get the two novellas to display the correct title of the story (novella) on the master page, I understand I’ll need separate books (nested). Let’s say my EDD begins: Element (Container): FrameBook Valid as the highest-level element. To create the child-book, I will need Element (Container): VolumeBook then Element (Container): Chapter then Element (Container): Section As the chapter files are separate files, does the outside container (FrameBook) exist in the chapter files, or, do I list both VolumeBook and Chapter as Valid as the highest-level element? In FrameBook, there will also be Front Matter and Back Matter. Can I use the Section element here or should I create a new element called OtherMatter? One of the novellas has a Prologue. This behaves in most ways like a chapter except that no number is displayed and its leading caption (title) is different, i.e. Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2. In unstructured Frame, I cheated and took a bad shortcut. I copied the master page and took out the autonumber paratag so that Chapter doesn’t show up on the printed page. However, the TOC is not working right, so this is not a good solution. --Do I use paratag Chapter for the prologue and then Format Document Numbering to reset the second instance of Chapter to be =1 ? --Do I remove the word Chapter from the master page? How then do I get the word Chapter to show up on all printed chapters except the Prologue (including the TOC)? --Do I have one element or two in the EDD? Hard to believe but I am progressing. Help tips for structured Framemaker?
Thanks to all for the pointers to building my own EDD using the manual Developing Structured Applications (Structure_Dev_Guide.pdf) from Adobe. Where can I go and find out more about what the structured elements/attributes mean? I've had no success with Adobe.com or the Framemaker 12 help pdf. Specifically at the moment, I'm trying to find out how Frame decides when and how to apply FirstIndentRelative i.e. relative to what? In following the instructions, it seems to me all I did was input a value for a Paragraph Indent, but I have not told Frame any rules about WHEN to apply this command. For those who don't have this exercise fresh in their memory ;-) there has been an Indent (0.3) added in all contexts to the Section element. The Title element has a (-0.3) FirstIndentRelative. Is there some place where exists a list of elements attributes which discusses what each means? Thanks, Theresa ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Getting a handle on structured Frame
I started my Frame 12 experience with a new convert to ebook/pdf project. I created an unstructured book because I quasi-know-what-I’m-doing in the unstructured world. However, I think to publish this book as an ebook, it has to be structured. I have had a long running affair with trying to understand structured Frame and I have to say that the various pieces of documentation on adobe.com are next to useless and, unfortunately, much of the documentation by others (and Adobe) starts with Frame 6 or segues into Robohelp. While I understand theoretically what’s going on with structured Frame, getting from here to there is no picnic. Anyway, I’m starting again with the new structured templates which came with Frame 12. I can see that I’ll have to create or modify an EDD. Frame 12 installed 13 versions of structapps.fm on my system, either dated 12/5/2013 or the date I installed the program. There are 6 files which are 282KB. How do I choose which file to open? The structapps.fm file which I did open has 3 varieties of DocBook in it (SGML DocBook, XML DocBook, DocBook2.2.1). How do I choose which DocBook file to start with? Also, my project involves converting two novellas into one ebook. I believe I’m going to require one fm book with two nested books within. How do I add that structure to the DocBook file? I now have ~50 files which are components of my unstructured book file. How would you recommend that I take the contents of those 50 files and move them into the structured book? Thanks for your help. I’m sure there will be more questions. Problems with documents imported from Word
Hi Framers, What do I do to clean up files which originate in Word or PDF. I'm turning crime fiction novels into ebooks and have run into a few problems. Case 1: I import simple Word files into Frame then publish as epub or mobi. In the finished version there are strange display behaviours in the middle of the book (font size and weight and italic drastically change, then return to normal). Is there a way I can clean files before I begin preparing them for publishing? Case 2: You may suggest that I ask this question on a Word forum, but everyone here knows everything, so here goes: Client has no original document so I've taken his PDF and used Adobe Acrobat to convert to text, massaged it in Frame to fix various things, then copied and pasted in Word. Going through the editing process, I cannot join two paragraphs together (by deleting the carriage return) and the Track Changes feature shows all kinds of formatting changes, which are totally unnecessary. In this case, I also want to strip the document of any formatting. I never work in Word to do any work, except when I am copyediting a nearly complete document (using Track Changes). Advice please? Re: Moderating framers WAS: FrameMaker graphics question
I think it's a software problem. Either the software doesn't allow free posting to the list, or the software is too complicated for the moderator to change people into unmoderated status. Question about formats for files in book
Hi Framers, Perhaps this is a philosophical question but it has been my habit to make a book with ONE master page set and ONE paragraph catalogue and ONE character catalogue. Over the course of building the document, I import changes into other files in the same book. Somehow, I had the idea that this was the way it was done. With the Frame 12 templates created by Bernard Aschwanden, it seems that each template second has only those paragraph and character catalogues as are required for that section (e.g. Cover, Legal and Contacts). Of course, I might not be quite understanding what's going on yet... What are your ideas? Re: Using pdfs in Frame12...cue some spooky music
This problem was solved by Arnis Gubins. Turns out that the cropped Acrobat file needed to be saved as .eps And then, that I had to change the default settings in Acrobat so that the eps would be visible in the Frame document. Using pdfs in Frame12...cue some spooky music
1a. The original pdf is an outline drawing from google maps done in Generic CAD. As part of that process, the original pdf also had a title, a ruler to measure the map in increments, and some notes at the bottom. 1b. This drawing was cropped using Adobe Acrobat XI tools which removed the title, ruler and notes. 2a. The second file is a Frame 12 document which imported the cropped pdf from Item 1 onto the master page. 2b. On the body page of the Frame document are some hundreds of numbers (dots on the map). 2c. This looks just great in Frame and prints properly. 3. Save as pdf in Frame brings the uncropped image from Item 1a as part of the pdf from 2c. 4. The pdf generated in item 3 will be inserted as an anchored frame in a new document. How to fix # 3, i.e. to get the cropped file to stay cropped? Following that, I'll have to figure out how to accomplish #4—which may not be a problem if I can fix # 3. Thanks in advance, Theresa (This is reprinted from Adobe Frame Acrobat forums...because there are a lot of wise people here) ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. I've reached the conversion tables (Structure Tools, Generate Conversion tables) and I have modified the generated table, but I cannot figure out how to "let it run to completion." What do I do to get Frame to attempt to process the table against my unstructured file? Thanks, Theresa
Query about what happens in structured Frame
Hello Framers, I’m in need of some basic advice. I’ve been using Frame for 20 years but have not yet used structured Frame. My Frame is 8.0p273, Acrobat Professional is 10.1.7 From an eList about crime fiction, several authors are writing a collaborative mystery story. I’m organizing the story in Access. The story itself is in an rtf memo field called BookComponent.Storytext. My friend is writing VBA code to export Storytext to html (Storytext.html) but he has no familiarity with Frame. So far, he has exported to html which MS Word can read, then I can copy and paste into Frame—this is a bit too ugly for repetitive iterations. Both Rick Quatro and Shlomo Perets have offered help (services), but I don’t even understand what to ask for. If I understand correctly, what I should be able to do is to open structured Frame and introduce it to Storytext.html and somehow get all the h1 tags to convert to Heading1 paratags. Right? How could one phrase this better (so as to explain the process which happens)? I have been pointed here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\FrameMaker8\Structure\xml\xhtml\app\template but as there is nothing in the template, I don’t understand what to do with it. FrameMaker 8’s User Guide is not helpful. Could a kindly Framer point me to a sample which I could study? Thanks in advance, Theresa P.S. If you want to read the cool mystery story it’s in a pdf on this page: http://www.reviewsbytdev.com/content/Whos-Murdering-Crime-Fiction ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Master pages' Room for Side Heads not being honoured
Mark, I'm not sure I follow exactly what's going on, but I have learned this about Master Pages. -ALL of the pages should exist in one master file, i.e. have the same list of Master Pages. -You can control which page uses which master file by use of a single paragraph tag (IIRC) at the top of the page. (Make it really small) -On the references page, build a table which tells which paragraph tag calls which master page Hope this helps, Theresa -- === Theresa de Valence t...@bstw.com === ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Access - Frame - pdf. Help with a (fun) project, maybe?
We seem to have succeeded, er, partly. Is it possible for Frame to import a HTML document? (The import function doesn't give that choice). If I drag and drop the document onto Firefox, the html opens. Then I can copy and paste into Frame. Seems a bit cumbersome. Access - Frame - pdf. Help with a (fun) project, maybe?
Hi Framers, I have an Access database which holds records for a crime fiction story, collaboratively written by a number of authors. On a repeating basis, I need to publish this story in a form which I can then attach to a website so that readers (and the collaborating authors) can see how the story is doing. Originally I posted each author as webpage using basic html, unremarkably named Chapter X, but now I’m moving the story around, so I would like to maintain the story in only one place, i.e. in the Access database. I am unable to use any of Access’ tools for exporting to XML or Text or Excel and import into either Word or Frame. (They all fail). I am able to export directly from an Access report to a pdf but this has the disadvantage that I manually have to add Bookmarks, etc., so I am thinking of getting the data into Frame and then using MicroType’s Frame-to-Acrobat tools. The story itself is in BookComponent.StoryText. The order of the BookComponents is goverened by BookComponent.Sortnum. Any advice? Thanks, Theresa P.S. In case you happen to like crime fiction, we’ve got some great (and famous) authors, so please visit our story: http://www.reviewsbytdev.com/content/Whos-Murdering-Crime-Fiction ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Interacting with a database
Hello Framers, I want to build a Frame template and populate it with items (about 500) from a spreadsheet to create a book. Each item has a photo, name, description, email address. Can this be automated? What is this process called in Frame? As an aside, my Frame manual is somewhere in a box, I haven’t found it yet. Is it worthwhile spending half the day looking for it, or are there more appropriate sources elsewhere? I have (vaguely) looked for this kind of feature in the manual before, but haven’t found anything that looks appropriate. Slightly OT: Where to find a good reference on building indexes?
Hi Framers, I'm just beginning a new project which will require building indexes (indeces) and I want to improve my understanding of how good indexes are built. What should I be looking to accomplish? Where can I find some examples of really well-done indexes? I've ordered IXGen from Frank Stearns (fsatools.com). Thanks in advance for your advice.
