Re: Scientific names in roman not italics in running headers

2011-06-24 Thread Michael Müller-Hillebrand
Patricia,

Using Running H/F with the $paratext or $marker1/2 is no option. For a good
reason these system variables reference only the text, no formatting at all.

The details are here:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS2937A033-EFF3-4d85-BBB3-98214B54950D.html

If the scientific name in your application is always the last (or first) part
of a heading, you can proceed like this:

[Heading:] Field Screening Aid for Bug one

Add a marker Header/Footer $1 with the first part of the heading: Field
Screening Aid for

Add a marker Header/Footer $2 with the second part of the heading: Bug one
(fill in a space character if some headings do not have a scientific name)

Now change the variable you use on the master page (e.g. Running H/F 1) to

$marker1 Emphasis$marker2/

(with Emphasis being the name of a character format that applies the desired
formatting)

[Bonus knowledge: / can be used instead of Default ¶ Font to switch off
the effect of the character format.]

Why is it so awkward? Because this requirement is very seldom and has some
side-effects. Just think about the headings of a document turned into a
collapsible tree in some form of online help. Those usually do not allow any
formatting at all. Even FrameMaker’s TOC picks up very little formatting from
the headings.

Could this be automated? Yes, using the FDK or FrameScript or ExtendScript
(since FM10) it is possible to automatically insert/fill the Header/Footer
variables accordingly.

HTH,

- Michael

Create, if you don't have one, a Character format for the italics. Insert the
char format in the H/F variable where you want the italics to appear. Add the
Default font object at point where you go back to normal font characteristics.

For example:

Field Screening Aid for
EmphasisBug OneDefault ¶ Font

Emphasis calls the character tag that applies italics at that point. Default
Font returns the string to the original font.

If the Chapter Title and Bug One are separate Unstructured variables, insert
the variables instead of text, e.g.,
$paratext[Chapter Title] Emphasis$paratext[Bug One]Default Font

If Structured, replace the '$paratext' with '$element text' and the appropriate
element name.

Character formats. Create one that does the italics. Then put it in the
header. The Frame manual used to be good at explaining the specific on this
but I've not see Frame past version 9.

include a Chapter Title and sometimes not even a Heading 1.

I expected that within a book the variable would pick up the referenced

have blank headers on some pages of the final document.

How do I fix this? I couldn't find an answer in my Unstructured FrameMaker 8

I'm not aware of having a variable pull a value from a different
physical file. Have you ever done that before? I expect the solution
is to use text insets rather than have one chapter split into multiple
files. One chapter should be one physical file for sanity's sake.

Alternatively, you might have to go with different variables but I
probably wouldn't go that route. (IOW, in Chapter 1, file 2, have a
variable that gets the value of ChapterTitleInvisible that is in the
file but doesn't display because it's in white text or is tagged with
conditional text.) That would be too hard to maintain.

We had a somewhat similar problem, but with document names. We finally
defined a variable for each doc name and imported all the variables into all
our files. You might have to do the same sort of thing for the chapter
titles in each manual; there might be a slicker way to go, but this way
would certainly work.

titles (Heading1) the name of the product, which is a ProductName variable
formatted in a certain way (half of the name blue, the other purple).

When the product name appears in the header, it is just black.

Any clue?

Thank you all for your help,

Mathieu.

Hi Mathieu

I guess you are using a character format in the middle of your variable
definition, for example blueFramepurpleMaker?

I have tested this and, indeed, some properties of the character format
(font family, weight, spread, stretch, superscript) are also displayed in
the Running H/F, others are not (font size, color).

Is this a bug or by design?

RE: Running headers calling on formatted variables

2008-08-14 Thread Baruch Brodersen
Yves and Mathieu,

Unfortunately you can only apply color to an entire running header-footer. It
is possible though to create the effect you're after, but you have to sacrifice
using a user-defined variable in the heading. Since you only occasionally need
it, it might be feasible.

I'm sending a sample .fm file in a separate mail since what is described below
is a little complex.

1. Create blue and purple character formats.
2. Create four paragraph formats based on Heading1:

ProductNameHeading1 = Heading1 As Is + Runin Head, empty space punct.
ProductName1  = Heading1 AsIs + color Blue + Runin Head
ProductName2  = Heading1 AsIs + color Purple + Runin Head, 1 empyt space punct.
AfterProdName3 = Heading1 AsIs (no runin head)

3. In your header use four variables in your header:
 Running H/F 2 $paratext[Heading1,ProductNameHeading1] + 1 empty space
 Running H/F 5 blue$paratext[ProductName1]
 Running H/F 6 purple$paratext[ProductName2] + 1 empty space
 Running H/F 7 $paratext[AfterProdName3]

This will create a Heading 1 look-a-like that will include a two-color product
name in both the heading and header. One problem remains however, and that is
that you have to dispose of the text in Running H/F 5-7 with the next
appearance of a stand alone Heading 1. To do that:

4. Create an anchored frame in the next Heading 1. Position the frame so
outside the column. Inside the frame draw a textbox with three empty paragraph.
Apply the ProductName1, ProductName2, and AfterProdName3 formats to them. That
will wash out the Running H/F 5-7 in the Header and leave only Heading 1.

You can copy and paste the anchored frame as many times as you need it, or use
AutoText from Silicon Prairie to drop it in whenever needed.

Or you can use one header text frame and put a two-column table in it for
more design flexibility:

   - You can play with ruling and shading, for example to place your
   headers/footers on a colored background.
   - You can control the distance between both columns by playing with
   the default cell margins.
   - You can align your text vertically in the table cell.
   - Your table cells will expand automatically as your header/footer
   text becomes longer.

o 1 paragraph for the running header/footer variable, right aligned.
This paragraph will be automatically on the same line as the first and it
breaks to the next if its length gets too long.

That works automatically when the system/product name is on the left side
of the header. However, when the system/product name is on the right
side, the paragraph with the running header/footer on the left needs a
right indentation of the length of the system/product name. That would
have to be adjusted manually.

Best regards

RE: Long running headers

2008-04-22 Thread Lester C. Smalley
I've used tables in the header as well, in particular for the vertical
alignment capability.

But there are a few cautions:

- the table row (cell) height automatically expanding may be an issue
depending on the available space; you have to be sure your header
content doesn't get cut if it grows (make sure the header frame is
  tall enough)

- a table has to have an anchor paragraph in the header text frame
that also adds vertical space; this can be overcome by setting
BOTH the space below the anchor paragraph and the height above
the table to the negative line spacing of the anchoring paragraph.
E.g., if the paragraph line space value is 2 points, set the space
below the para and space above the table to -2 points. OR you can
play with the size and placement of the header frame to move it
closer to the top paper edge. Or both

right indentation of the length of the system/product name. That would
have to be adjusted manually.

Long running headers

Or both

Long running headers

2008-04-21 Thread Milan Davidovic
I've inherited this Frame book. There's a master page that has two
running header variables in the header, one for the chapter title and
the other for the current heading 1. On one of the pages in the
manual, both the chapter title and the heading 1 are long. Whoever
last modified this book managed to get the text for the heading 1 to
wrap so that it looks something like this:

Blah blah blah blah blahYadda yadda yadda
   yadda yadda yadda

but I don't know where to look to see how they did this. It has come
undone so that the second line of the text on the right has
disappeared. I must restore this. Changing the text of either the
chapter title or the heading is not an option, and att this time in
the project I prefer not to get into playing with font sizes.

Your wisdom and guidance, please thanks.

Another trick is to make TWO header text frames - one on each side of

set font properties, justification, spacing, etc. for the different
pieces of data I'm pulling in from the text. You can even control the

Help with Running Headers

2007-11-13 Thread David Kuhn
I am running into a problem inserting a running header.

It is for a book organized into parts.

One of the master pages must include a header row containing the Part
number and Part name above the Chapter number and Chapter name.

I tried to insert a Running Header 5, just changing the definition that
exists from $paratext[H1_Heading1] to $paratext[Part].

There is already a Part paragraph format defined, but it exists only in
the Part document type, not the Chapter document type.

But when I switch from the Master Pages view to the Body Pages view,
this line does not appear at all.

Unless you're already using it, you could assign the book's $volnum
variable to display the Part's information by mapping it to the
appropriate chapters in the book file. Then just set up the header
definition to display the word Part and the contents of $volnum. It
should work fine because the $volnum variable spans all the affected
chapters.

There's no such thing in FM as a Part document type, there are only
chapters (.fm files) and books (.book files). If you're putting the Part
title page in its own chapter (.fm file), then the paratext from its
pgfs isn't available in subsequent chapter files. In order for the
Running H/F in a chapter file to display the text of a Part pgf, that
pgf must be in the file.

As Art noted, you can use the Volume Number variable for your part
numbers. But if you want to display a part title in all the chapters in
that part, you'll have to use a workaround (listed in descending order
of preference, IMHO, and excluding my first choice, which would be not
to do this at all):

-- Create a Part Name user variable, with a different definition for the
chapters in each part.

-- Use a cross-reference to the Part pgf in the headers, with different
xrefs (and thus master pages) for the chapters in each part.

-- Create a tiny, invisible (white text) pgf containing the part name
somewhere in each chapter file.

-- Put all the chapters in a part into the same FM chapter (.fm) file,
and use old-style (pre-v.6) numbering for chapter numbers.

Actually, you can set the contents of $volnum to hold user-specified
text, which is the method I was thinking of using... Then just plug it
in either to the user variable, or into the header.

slap_forehead /Of course! David mentioned needing both the part number
and name, so it didn't occur to me that you could combine the two, if
you didn't mind hard-coding the number as part of a text string.

On the Volume tab of Numbering Properties, set Volume # to (for
instance) Part 1 Getting Started, and Format to Text.

If you move a chapter (or rearrange the parts), you'll have to manually
change the numbering, but this workaround goes at the top of my list.
Thanks for straightening me out, Art! :-)

There's no such thing in FM as a "Part document type," there are only
chapters (.fm files) and books (.book files).

HTH!

Help with Running Headers

2007-11-13 Thread Art Campbell
Actually, you can set the contents of $volnum to hold user-specified
text, which is the method I was thinking of using... Then just plug it
in either to the user variable, or into the header.

Of course! David mentioned needing both the part number
and name, so it didn't occur to me that you could combine the two, if
you didn't mind hard-coding the number as part of a text string.

On the Volume tab of Numbering Properties, set Volume # to (for
instance) "Part 1 Getting Started," and Format to Text.

If you move a chapter (or rearrange the parts), you'll have to manually
change the numbering, but this workaround goes at the top of my list.
Thanks for straightening me out, Art! :-)

Although this formed a part of a larger solution which was controlled
using a FrameMaker plugin, I used Header/Footer markers and the
respective variables ($marker1 $marker2) to achieve a similar
result.

On the page where your Head1 exist you could add a marker with the Head2
content. This could be performed manually or using one of the scripting
tools available for FrameMaker (i.e. FrameAC or FrameScript).

Re: Running Headers

Unless you implement a manual or scripted solution as Mark suggests,
you probably can't -- I noted in the first post that the
out-of-the-box solution only works when the heads are on the same
page.

Just in passing, from a reader's point of view, it probably doesn't
give me any useful information to know what the next subtopic
(Heading2) is, especially if it's several pages away. Knowing the
topic that's on the page though, could be helpful, especially if
you're skimming for info.

Gillian: my remark wasn't meant as a solution to your original posting, but
merely an addenda to Art's.

I've revisited your original mail, and afaik you can't fix this if you use
separate headers - or at least, I don't know a way of doing so: FrameMaker will
always take the most recent previous instance of a para tag from the end of the
current page backwards when it's referenced in a running header. So if you've
got a Head1 but no Head2 on the current page, a H/F variable that references
only a Head2 will reference the previous, invalid, one - as you've found out.

The usual way around this is to use just one context header, and define it as
$paratext[Head1,Head2]. This causes the header to display the first of Head1 or
Head2 that it finds. This has the following results:

. If a page contains a Head1 only, it's displayed

. If a page contains no Head 1, the most recent previous Head1 or Head2 are
displayed - which by definition are valid

. If a page contains a Head1 and a Head2, the Head1 is displayed

. If a page contains a Head2 but no Head1, the Head2 is displayed.

Running Headers

2007-01-09 Thread Art Campbell
If I'm understanding you correctly, the limiting factor is what page
the level 2 heads are on.
IF they're on the same page as the header, you can specify the last
Head2 on the page instead of the first (what you're calling the
previous) Head2.

However, as far as I know, you can't make this work across multiple pages.

If all your heads are on the same page as the header, though, you can
tell it to pick up the last Head2 on the page by modifying the
variable string in the Master Page header to <$paratext[+,Head2]>
instead of <$paratext[Head2]>.

(Solved) Unwanted Greek characters in running headers

2006-06-20 Thread Vig, Nanna Poulsen
My dear Mac solved the problem. I opened the 'latin' files on the Mac and Frame
told me that some Greek fonts were missing. I then turned off the Remember
missing fonts option and saved. Now all 'latin' running headers display as
expected on Windows, too. But why the project changed font behavior since it
was first created on Windows I still don't know.

Hello Framers,
I am sure there is a simple explanation to this, but I cannot think of it right
now:

While revising an old project containing 12 different languages in FM 7.0, Win
XP, SP2, I suddenly find that my running headers show Greek characters instead
of the 'native' German, Swedish, French ... characters that otherwise show
correctly in the text's headings and body. There is apparently nothing wrong
when I examine the variables. And the Greek part of the project seems to be OK
re. headers. The fonts are Times New Roman and ITC Officina Sans, and both have
worked well before. I cannot remember that I have changed my system much
recently, except for installing SP2, WWePub and tried out the Sundorne plugin.

Thanks for any clues on this unexpected puzzle.

/Nanna

(Solved) Unwanted Greek characters in running headers

2006-06-20 Thread Matt Sullivan
You'll need to edit the Font Substitution table in your maker.ini file.

There is a section in the Customizing Frame Products in Online Manuals (in
the Frame install directory) that describes the changes needed.

My dear Mac solved the problem. I opened the 'latin' files on the Mac and
Frame told me that some Greek fonts were missing. I then turned off the
Remember missing fonts option and saved. Now all 'latin' running headers
display as expected on Windows, too. But why the project changed font
behavior since it was first created on Windows I still don't know.

Subject: Unwanted Greek characters in running headers

Hello Framers,
I am sure there is a simple explanation to this, but I cannot think of it
right now:

While revising an old project containing 12 different languages in FM 7.0,
Win XP, SP2, I suddenly find that my running headers show Greek characters
instead of the 'native' German, Swedish, French ... characters that
otherwise show correctly in the text's headings and body. There is
apparently nothing wrong when I examine the variables. And the Greek part of
the project seems to be OK re. headers. The fonts are Times New Roman and
ITC Officina Sans, and both have worked well before. I cannot remember that
I have changed my system much recently, except for installing SP2, WWePub
and tried out the Sundorne plugin.

Thanks for any clues on this unexpected puzzle.
