So I thought...it'd be kind of fun to make a goblin char. And I did...and
it appears I can't be anything but warrior or thief. And that's fine, so

Re: [Audyssey] entombed---it's a losing fight

2009-10-10 Thread dark
Don't your mages have shrink? Usually I like to specialize my mages in one
or two spell schools, - usually lighting or shrink (grow is fun, but
imho not quite as useful).

Hit the guardian with a high level shrink spell, you can also use your
other mage as a second shrinker if necessary and then use a combination of
either lightning, sneak attacks or harm scrolls to do it in.

Personally, I think the guardian has actually got rather a lot easier this
build.

[Audyssey] Silverlight accessible or not?

2009-10-10 Thread dark

Hi.

poking around the project.aon forums, I discovered someone has created an
online application to automate playing of lone wolf gamebooks. This means no
more stat and item keeping, looking up numbers on tables, rolling dice or
long drawn out combats.

In fact it would make the Lonewolf series function essentially like the
fighting fantasy project stuff.

For a long while there has been a java application called 7th sense which
does this, however sinse I can't read anything with Hal above the title,
it's a bit of a none starter, especially as while some Java
applications can be incredibly screen reader friendly, when they're not,
they're not! and nothing short of a complete rewrite will fix them.

So, I was intreagued to here about this online version. The only trouble is
it apparently uses the Ms silverlight web addon.

I've heard a couple of bad things about silverlight, but is this
dependent upon the webpage and design, or implicitely part of silverlight
itself.

Being as the Lw books are already html text, I'd theoretically assume all
Silverlight would need to do is handle all the backgrounds stats etc,
but is this wrong?

have other silverlight driven projects proved utterly impossible?

Any information would be appreciated.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Silverlight accessible or not?

2009-10-10 Thread dark
Well, I'm incredibly sorry to report that the webpages which use the Ap are
about as inaccessible as you could imagine!

There is literally no text there Hal can read beyond the status bar at
all, in fact I even tried saving the page as text and got nothing.

I'm certain that Silverlight is installed and running correctly sinse it's
there in the addon's section as an enabled Ie addon, however for all that
Hal can make of it the page which starts the ap might as well be blank,
though looking closely I believe I can see some writing there so I know it
is not.

I'm not sure what changes if any could be made to make the thing accessible,
sinse i'm not even sure what silverlight practically does to make pages
textless, but sinse as I said the 7th sense Java Lw program is equally
inaccessible and quite probably impossible to make so, I'll contact Dolphin
on Monday and ask about silverlight and Hal.

There may be experimental maps for it which I don't know about, or
something might be in the works on a Hal upgrade. Sinse I don't know how
silverlight works I can't really say.

It's a shame though that both of the methods of playing lw conveniently are
so absolutely inaccessible, particularly as both have extra options
such as a hard core mode and a scoring system which sound rather fun.

Before I start talking nicely to the developer, I'd be interested to know
precisely how much work it'd take to un-silverlight the pages but keep the

would.

That's one thing I like about the set we get from Hadley. THe black pieces
have a nailhead sticking out of the top of them so they can be easily
distinguished from the white. Then of course they come in two separate
little ziplock bags. I'm not a very skilled chess player yet though even
after three years. Problem is I'm not a very strategic thinker. That's
partly why I don't play games like World of Warcraft or even Sound RTS.

Wow!

the Americans are once again proved much ahead of England in terms of Vi
acdcess.

I had to pay an exorbitant price for an adapted chess set which came with
no materials at all.

Also, while the pieces are very tactile, the contrast on them is
horrible! It's more like slightly light brown vs rather darker brown than
black and white, which is really annoying if I want to use my vision as
well.

I've certainly seen better adapted chess sets than this, but once
again showing the Rnib's inherent stupidity, this is the only chess
set they sell!

Some questions for you in order to get you started playing again:

What screen reader do you use? If it is JAWS, I can send you a free
chess program that you can play against, as well as connect to the
Internet to play against others, although I have not tried this feature
out as of yet.

Do you have an adapted chess set for blind people to use, rather than
having to use speech to explore a chess board during the game?

I can also help you, probably one on one, as to which pieces move where
and the basic rules of the game. Or, there is a totally free
correspondence course, either on audio cassettes or in braille,
available from the Hadley School for the Blind. All course materials
are yours to keep after you complete the course, including a very nice
adapted chess set.

Hi folks,

I'm trying to get bakc in to playing chess after being away from it for
quite some time. Is there somewhere I can download a very, very basic
chess
manual or instructions. I'm not looking for fancy strategies at this
point,
just something in plain English that I can quickly use to remind myself
of

basic chess moves, which pieces can move which ways, etc.

Also, is there anywhere, and with any program preferably free or an
extremly
low cost, that a totally blind person can play chess online with
others?

Thanks.

[Audyssey] Bgt beta applications

2009-10-10 Thread Philip Bennefall
Hello everyone,

Beta application submissions for the Blastbay Gamer's Toolkit (bgt) are now
closed. We will be contacting the people who made it into the team over the
course of this weekend. I would like to say a very big thanks to all of you who
took the time to submit your applications, and I'm only sorry I couldn't put
more people into the team as there were many great submissions.

I will post updates about the Bgt development every now and then, so that those
who are interested but didn't make it into the beta team still have a general
idea of what is going on.

Again, thank you all very much.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

No, jobs and game programming aren't mutually exclusive but it can be

Don't your mages have shrink? Usually I like to specialize my mages in one
or two spell schools, - usually lighting or shrink (grow is fun, but
imho not quite as useful).

Hit the guardian with a high level shrink spell, you can also use
your

other mage as a second shrinker if necessary and then use a combination of
either lightning, sneak attacks or harm scrolls to do it in.

Personally, I think the guardian has actually got rather a lot easier this
build.

God I miss my human warriors!
And to top it up, I don't have any shrink/grow scrolls...they never
dropped this trip.
Even my goblin's sneak+critical+flery attack barely get the guardian to
'injured' lol

hmmm silverlite has not always worked for us its not really accessible.
However what are the lonewolf gamebooks I thought lonewolf was a gma game but I

Also where do I play these lonewolf things with the online silverlite program,
also how do you play with the java program, I have jaws 6.20 so I may try this.

For a long while there has been a java application called 7th sense which does

I've heard a couple of bad things about silverlight, but is this

2009-10-10 Thread shaun everiss
hmmm hal is still good as long as you have the latest version.
saying that I wouldn't use just one reader, I use nvda, hal and jaws, however
thats my opinion.
Hal is good in some things but really bad in others.
The good things it does is not putting spurious info everywhere.
when you brouse websites then its jaws and nvda, also if you use excell or
advanced word functions, and maybe firefox its jaws or and nvda.
However for things like eudora and winamp its good also you can turn the voice
off on the fly and hotkeys which jaws has not done.
It also hardly crashes.

I created a temporary website for www.blind-games.com in Silverlight and it
didn't appear to be very accessible. It might be possible to make the site
accessible with a different methodology. After all, the entire site
 doesn't
have to be in Silverlight. Only the app.

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Before performing the system restore did you by chance make a restore
point to go back to just in case the system restore failed? If so you
should go in to system restore and select the latest restore point you
have and try and undo some of the changes made by the system restore.
As for fixing Outlook Express that is a fairly easy problem to resolve.
All you needed to do was go to the Microsoft web site and download the
Internet Explorer setup and reinstall Internet Explorer 7 or 8. After
that it should install Outlook Express.

P.S.

Ever thought about using Mozilla Thunderbird? It is much safer and more
secure than Outlook Express and works fairly well with Jaws 10 and
Window Eyes 7.11.

I initially tried to restore things to a restore point created yesterday
afternoon, that was what caused the problem.

I've just tried to restore to a point created on the 28th of

as for backing up the registry, this is something I've actually never done,

I personally never muck about with the registry at all.

anymore suggestions?

I'm talking about the Lonewolf gamebook series from
http://www.projectaon.org/new.htmm, a set of incredibly good gamebooks which
tell a long ongoing story, have skills and other interesting mechanics, and
were originally released in the 1980's but have sinse been made public
domain.

Usually, though the books are done as html with links betwene the various
sections, it's necessary to roll all dice, and keep your own stats and items
etc. The silverlight thing was an attempt to automate this process.

Sadly though, it doesn't work at all!

aah you don't need to fix that removal with a system restore, its in the add
windows setup components I have seen it its like a seperate item.
if its checked, uncheck and then recheck it gagain and it should work.

ok, wow you should never try to diddle with your system during an install.
Found that the hard way myself and had to fiddle but got it mostly working.
I suggest you reformat.
Next time wait till java is installed all the way.
you should be able to remove msn explorer from windows setup in add remove.
you should be able to add outlook express in the same way.
uninstall java and put it back in.
make a new user for yourself find and delete the other user, better yet if
you can get in user accounts and delete the other user then make it again.

Needless to say, this is a baad! state of affiars, and what's worse,

Stil, the idea of starting everything from scratch on the default profile is

Normally, I'd phone dolphin tech support with this sort of issue, but

while I know this isn't a tech support list, I'd really! appreciate some
help from some of the cleverer people here so as to get this sorted out.

Btw, as I said, I'm using windows xp. Luckily hal, though not my

sorry again for this, but I am rather stuck here.

all the best,

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread Tristan B

Hi Dark,

I will outline the steps you will need to take, if you can use that
(secondary) user account to full capacity:

1. Since Outlook Express is part of the Internet Explorer 6 package, you
will have to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, or in your case you may
have to downgrade from IE 7 or 8.

Here is the link to download Internet Explorer + Outlook Express 6.0 SP 1
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx

2. SSave the download and try to run it on the secondary user account. Lets
hope this works... (And do not, fiddle around with anything during the
install/downgrade process :-p)

Hope this helps.
Tristan

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Ouch! That really is a serious problem, and one kind of hard to fix via
e-mail. Without actually standing there looking at your system it is
pretty hard to say what is wrong, give advice and or solutions, when I
can't eyeball the status of your system firsthand.
I'm sure there is probably a solution here, but never the less it may be
easier to reformat the system. A good product recovery doesn't hurt now
and then anyway. It just means you are starting out with a fresh
install, clean registry, and whatever is screwing up your system
restores will be hopefully fixed. If you can't or don't want to do a
product recovery you'll have to find someone over there to try and
reverse the problem.

as for backing up the registry, this is something I've actually never

thing out.

I personally never muck about with the registry at all.

anymore suggestions?

Re: [Audyssey] Silverlight accessible or not?

2009-10-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Umm...If these Lonewolf game books are public domain perhaps I could
convert them to an open source text adventure system like Sryth. I've
been meaning to write an RPG or game book style game anyway and I'd have
no problem converting an existing game to a more accessible format as
soon as my schedule lightens up after MOTA. What do you think?

dark wrote:
I'm talking about the Lonewolf gamebook series from
http://www.projectaon.org/new.htmm, a set of incredibly good gamebooks
which tell a long ongoing story, have skills and other interesting
mechanics, and were originally released in the 1980's but have sinse
been made public domain.

Usually, though the books are done as html with links betwene the
various sections, it's necessary to roll all dice, and keep your own
stats and items etc. The silverlight thing was an attempt to automate
this process.

Sadly though, it doesn't work at all!

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Okay...That's something of a big problem. I know you said you don't have
an XP cd, but do you have a product recovery partition on your hard drive?
I ask because most new computers don't come with installation disks any
more. With my Compaq laptop I have to install Vista from a product
recovery partition already present on the laptop's hard drive. There is
an option to burn it to a cd or dvd, but by and large it is done by
starting up the computer and running the install from a hard drive
partition. If not it might be helpful to get a copy of XP for just these
kinds of emergencies.
