Re: [Audyssey] playing sounds in BGT?

2010-03-29 Thread Willem
Hi. That's just the thing. A script is nothing more than a text you
write explaining how it should represent your idea and it is much more
stupid than most humans, though it makes up for that by being able to do
fast calculations.

On 3/29/2010 2:59 AM, Casey Mathews wrote:
OK. That makes sense. Thanks a lot. I'm still trying to wrap my head
around a lot of these concepts. I find that while most of the time it
looks good, and may even run, the script see things totally differently.

Hi.
The program is closing before the sound can begin playing unless you
have those alerts in there. Need a loop or something running.

At least you could do a while loop that would go while playing blahblah

 Hello all. I've really been working on this for a while. I'm trying
some

 stuff just for my own personal understanding, and while I realize the
 function below isn't complete, I don't understand why none of the
sounds
 play. The script runs, but the sounds don't play unless I put an
alert box
 up first. Thanks for any ideas. Note: I do have a main function that
works

 fine.

 void borg()
 {
 background.play_looped();

 int borg; //This will be the location of the borg on the sound scape.
 borg=random(1, 3);
 if (borg==1)
 {
 spon.pan=-100;
 spon.play();
 if (key_pressed(KEY_LEFT))
 {
 borgdown.play();
 kills++;
 alert(Kills,You killed +kills+ borg.);

 }
 alert(OK,else);
 } //end if
 } //end borg

Subject: [Audyssey] My first BGT script

Hi,

I've just created my first working BGT script! The code is pasted
below. It's not much of a game, but still lets you play around. You'll
need
to supply your own .wav files, the ones I used are quite silly. But first,
a

description of the, um, game.

You, the player of this fine game that's sure to make me a
multi-millionaire, are at the left edge of a game board fifty-spaces long.
You move your, er, character across the board using the left and right
arrow

keys. Each time you successfully move, a walking sound is played. If you
bump the left edge, a bump left sound is played, and if you bump the right
edge, a bump right sound is played. The goal of the game is to make 100
successful movements before bumping an edge six times. If you bump six
times, a losing sound is played and the game exits. If you move 100 times
successfully, a winning sound is played and the game exits. And of course,
we have a logo sound to get things started for my wonderful audiogames
company! Also, a background sound to get you in the mood to play!So here's
the code, hopefully it will be useful to someone!
Jayson

// Define sound objects.
sound logo; // Starting sound.
sound amb; // Background sound.
sound walk; // Movement sound.
sound bumpl; // Bump left edge.
sound bumpr; // Bump right edge.
sound youlose;
sound youwin;

// Define variables we'll need.
int position; // The player's position on the board.
int bumps; // How many times we've bumped an edge.
int moves; // How many times we've moved successfully.

void main() {
// Load sounds.
amb.load(amb.wav);
bumpl.load(bumpl.wav);
bumpr.load(bumpr.wav);
logo.load(logo.wav);
walk.load(walk.wav);
youlose.load(youlose.wav);
youwin.load(youwin.wav);
// Play the logo.
logo.play_wait();
wait(1000);

// Initialize the environment.
position = 0;
bumps = 0;
moves = 0;
show_game_window(Jayson's Test Game);
amb.volume = -10.0;
amb.play_looped();

// The main game loop!
while (true) {
if (bumps  5) {
// You lose!
amb.stop();
wait(50);
youlose.play_wait();
wait(100);
exit();
}
if (moves = 100) {
// You win!
amb.stop();
wait(50);
youwin.play_wait();
wait(100);
exit();
}
if (key_down(KEY_RIGHT)) move_right();
if (key_down(KEY_LEFT)) move_left();
}
}

// Move right.
void move_right() {
if (position == 49) {
// Oops. Too far. Bump.
bumpr.play_wait();
wait(100);
bumps ++;
return;
}
moves ++;
position ++;
walk.play_wait();
wait(50);
}

// Move left.
void move_left() {
if (position == 0) {
// Oops. Too far. Bump.
bumpl.play_wait();
wait(100);
bumps ++;
return;
}
moves ++;
position --;
walk.play_wait();
wait(50);
}

Now I solved the problems and I played a lot!
It's really a fantastic game!
I will definitely purchase it!
Yesterday I spent several hours playing in a campaign in the sea! It was a
great moment!

I would have to say that TOC is not similar to SoundRTS, unless Axis and
Allies is similar to Risk. There is no comparison in the delicious
complexity of TOC.

Hi,

I've just created my first working BGT script! The code is pasted
below. It's not much of a game, but still lets you play around. You'll
need
to supply your own .wav files, the ones I used are quite silly. But
first, a

description of the, um, game.

You, the player of this fine game that's sure to make me a
multi-millionaire, are at the left edge of a game board fifty-spaces
long.
You move your, er, character across the board using the left and right
arrow

keys. Each time you successfully move, a walking sound is played. If you
bump the left edge, a bump left sound is played, and if you bump the
right

edge, a bump right sound is played. The goal of the game is to make 100
successful movements before bumping an edge six times. If you bump six
times, a losing sound is played and the game exits. If you move 100 times
successfully, a winning sound is played and the game exits. And of
course,

we have a logo sound to get things started for my wonderful audiogames
company! Also, a background sound to get you in the mood to play!So
here's

the code, hopefully it will be useful to someone!
Jayson

// Define sound objects.
sound logo; // Starting sound.
sound amb; // Background sound.
sound walk; // Movement sound.
sound bumpl; // Bump left edge.
sound bumpr; // Bump right edge.
sound youlose;
sound youwin;

// Define variables we'll need.
int position; // The player's position on the board.
int bumps; // How many times we've bumped an edge.
int moves; // How many times we've moved successfully.

void main() {
// Load sounds.

bumpl.load(bumpl.wav);
bumpr.load(bumpr.wav);
logo.load(logo.wav);
walk.load(walk.wav);
youlose.load(youlose.wav);
youwin.load(youwin.wav);
// Play the logo.
logo.play_wait();
wait(1000);

// Initialize the environment.
position = 0;
bumps = 0;
moves = 0;
show_game_window(Jayson's Test Game);
amb.volume = -10.0;
amb.play_looped();

// The main game loop!
while (true) {
if (bumps  5) {
// You lose!
amb.stop();
wait(50);
youlose.play_wait();
wait(100);
exit();
}
if (moves = 100) {
// You win!
amb.stop();
wait(50);
youwin.play_wait();
wait(100);
exit();
}
if (key_down(KEY_RIGHT)) move_right();
if (key_down(KEY_LEFT)) move_left();
}
}

// Move right.
void move_right() {
if (position == 49) {
// Oops. Too far. Bump.
bumpr.play_wait();
wait(100);
bumps ++;
return;
}
moves ++;

}

// Move left.

[Audyssey] More thoughts on TOC air power.

2010-03-29 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Aircraft need to be able to bombard cities. The current prohibition stunts
their power quite a lot. IF they can attack convoys, why not cities?

Also, the unit stacking rules seem odd. You can have an infinite number of
units in a city, but in a cell the same size you can only have one
non-fighter unit. There seems to be a confusion of scale, and it makes
coordinated attacks impossible. What is the thinking here?

Hey,
Here is a small example BGT game I wrote that I call Target Practice.
A sound pans randomly from left to right, or right to left. Your goal
is to press space when the sound is as close to the center as
possible. It is a bit harder then it sounds. Target Practice includes
three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium and Hard. I have zipped it up.
Unzip it, and open readme.txt for more information.
You can find the game here:

Enjoy.

Re: [Audyssey] More thoughts on TOC air power.

2010-03-29 Thread David Greenwood

Hi Chris,

I'll answer your second question first, since it leads into the other
question. TOC was initially designed as a strategic board game, but it did
evolve somewhat from its original concept. One of the reasons that one unit
is assigned to one cell has little to do with scale, although I have used
this reasoning before to justify this rule. The main reason is that TOC was
designed to be used by the blind gamer along with their sighted friends and
family. If you have many pieces on every cell, it is difficult to represent
this on the screen's display. You can assume that cities can have more than
one unit, but there aren't too many of these and you can examine them if
there is any question. A Sighted person or someone using a Braille display
can view the map quickly and know where all active units are without going
to each cell and pressing Tab.

Now that I have said this, fighters can share cells with units of their own
side. Although I argued that fighters are different since they are in the
air and other units are on the ground and so they can't get in each others
way, there is a much more pragmatic reason for this. Fighters initially had
the problem that they were constantly running out of fuel since they were
blocked by other units. You were losing more to fuel problems than enemy
action. The solution was to allow them to share cells with other fighters
and units as long as they did not belong to the enemy.

To answer Willem's question at the same time here, I feel that fighters are
one of the most important and strategic unit types, but for other than
scouting, you need lots of them. About half way through a campaign I
probably have half my cities producing fighters. Why do I like them? Here
are a few reasons:
1. They move fast and so you can concentrate defense and offense on a
distant or vulnerable location very quickly.
2. They can share cells and they travel six cells per time unit and so you
can coordinate attacks of many fighters on an enemy in just one time unit.
3. They can easily scout large areas of sea for approaching enemy ships and
submarines, and once found, you can send many fighters to that spot in one
or two time periods.
4. Cities far back from the enemy lines can produce fighters and bring the
strength of their production power to the enemy quickly.
I don't have much use for fighters early in a campaign and very seldom in
complete land battles until the very end of the game, but to reiterate, when
you build fighters, build lots. The Battle of Britain map really shows the
power of fighters.
To address your question about using fighters to bomb cities, the beta team
discussed this a bit and we didn't really come up with a decision. We
didn't know what to do with fighters once they passed over an enemy city. We
decided that they would deliver one HP of damage as they do outside cities,
and if they had a successful attack, they could continue past the city, or
circle back for another attack, but what if they end their six moves while
over a city, how do we handle this? We ended up deciding that in the next
release we would look at having a bomber type. These would be more limited
in some respects, but more valuable as a stand-alone unit. Of course,
they'll cost more.

You mentioned that performing coordinated attacks are difficult, how so?
Any one unit has eight exposed sides to be attacked from, and does it really
matter if your second line of attacks comes a time unit later? An example
might help me address the problem.

By the way, your previous two posts were great. They won't be implemented
in the first release, but they will all seriously be considered for the next
one. I'm tempted to implement some of them immediately, but the version 1.0
label has to be put on it some time.

Aircraft need to be able to bombard cities. The current prohibition
stunts

their power quite a lot. IF they can attack convoys, why not cities?

Also, the unit stacking rules seem odd. You can have an infinite number
of

units in a city, but in a cell the same size you can only have one
non-fighter unit. There seems to be a confusion of scale, and it makes
coordinated attacks impossible. What is the thinking here?

Hi,
Right. Downloading depends on the upload speed of the server, in this
case, BlastBay's HTTP server, and the connection you have. The browser
has little to do with it. Muhammed may have had a decent connection
because he downloaded it at a time when other people weren't, or
because he has a better connection then Jayson. When browsers are
called fast, this is typically how fast it can parse and display
HTML, and how quickly it can render JavaScript. While I completely
agree with you Muhammed that Firefox is a good browser, it doesn't
necessarily have a better download speed then Internet Explorer or
Opera That is entirely dependent on the server and your connection.

Hi all!

I am very happy to announce the availability of beta version 0.1 of the
Blastbay Game Toolkit (BGT). This tool allows users with no prior
programming experience to dive in and create audio games from the
ground

up,

using an incredibly versatile scripting language that in turn controls

the
powerful Blastbay game engine that you've already seen in titles such
as

Q9

and Kringle Crash. The tool ships with extensive documentation as well

as an

in-depth language tutorial, which also is available in audio form

narrated

by a professional voiceover artist.

The tool is still in testing and active development, and so I would
love

to hear your thoughts, suggestions and any other feedback that springs

to
mind... So head over to www.blastbay.com right now! I will be
patrolling

the

forum there, ready to answer any questions that you may have. So don't
hesitate to sign up and ask questions if you get stuck and, above all,

have

lots of fun making new and exciting games!

Kind regards,

If
you
bump the left edge, a bump left sound is played, and if you bump the
right

edge, a bump right sound is played. The goal of the game is to make 100
successful movements before bumping an edge six times. If you bump six
times, a losing sound is played and the game exits. If you move 100
times
successfully, a winning sound is played and the game exits. And of
course,

we have a logo sound to get things started for my wonderful audiogames
company! Also, a background sound to get you in the mood to play!So
here's

the code, hopefully it will be useful to someone!
Jayson

// Define sound objects.
sound logo; // Starting sound.
sound amb; // Background sound.
sound walk; // Movement sound.
sound bumpl; // Bump left edge.
sound bumpr; // Bump right edge.
sound youlose;
sound youwin;

// Define variables we'll need.
int position; // The player's position on the board.
int bumps; // How many times we've bumped an edge.
int moves; // How many times we've moved successfully.

void main() {
// Load sounds.
amb.load(amb.wav);
bumpl.load(bumpl.wav);
bumpr.load(bumpr.wav);
logo.load(logo.wav);
walk.load(walk.wav);
youlose.load(youlose.wav);
youwin.load(youwin.wav);
// Play the logo.
logo.play_wait();
wait(1000);

// Initialize the environment.
position = 0;
bumps = 0;
moves = 0;
show_game_window(Jayson's Test Game);
amb.volume = -10.0;
amb.play_looped();

// The main game loop!
while (true) {
if (bumps  5) {
// You lose!
amb.stop();
wait(50);
youlose.play_wait();
wait(100);
exit();
}
if (moves = 100) {

Re: [Audyssey] More thoughts on TOC air power.

2010-03-29 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Hi David, and thanks for your kind words re my previous posts.

Re: coordination, if I have five fighters surrounding a cell with an enemy
battleship, as it stands, each fighter has to attack separately. There is
no benefit other than stacking hits on to multiple attacking. I can see
this as a model simplification, but really five attacking aircraft should be
more than five times as effective than a single aircraft. Defenses would be
divided, making each aircraft last longer and presumably do more damage. As
it is, the battleship gets to use all its power against each incoming
attack. The same would be true for any unit surrounded, there is an
insufficient force multiplier effect for multiple attackers.

One way to resolve this would be to change the movement so that all
movement/attacks for a side are resolved at once, so you'd know if the
Bismarck were being attacked by six fighters and a destroyer all at the same
time. This might be problematic in the more fluid environment you envision
for multi-player, so it may not be the best solution.

Another solution would be that each subsequent attacker after the first on a
unit reduces the effectiveness of that unit in its fight. So fighter 1
attacks the Bismarck and the BB is at full strength. Fighter 2 attacks and
the BB is at half strength for firepower. Fighter 3 attacks and the bb is
at 1/3 strength for firepower and so on. This pattern could apply any time
you have units surrounding an enemy and would imho properly reflect the
effectiveness of synchronized attacks. It could also work in multi-player,
though if I understand you correctly there won't be turns per se, so you'd
have to impose a time limit on attacks in order to gain the benefit outlined
above.

This would have a profound effect on strategy and tactics. It would make
convoying necessary and more effective. It would make the air unit the
feared thing it should be, see the Prince of Wales/Repulse vs. the Japanese
air force on December 10, 1941, a bloody defeat for the Royal Navy.

This would be a fairly fundamental change, so I wouldn't necessarily expect
it before the next release, though I think its sufficiently important to
consider a small delay if it could be implemented easily.

nope you sure don't. most totally blind individuals can play it just fine.
It's a bit hard to explain how to do so if you've never played the game. it
mostly involves good listening skills and the ability to think logically to
some degree but it's a bit more involved than that. let me know if you would
like me to explain anything specifically and I will try.

[Audyssey] off topic, web host help question

2010-03-29 Thread Chastity MORSE
Sorry, to post this here, but wasn't sure where else to post this and the
groups for the blind I signed up for haven't gotten back to me.
I need suggestions for easy-to-use web host, lots of storage space, no adds,
unlimited band with, and don't mind paying to get these, also need easy upload
and if I can purchase a domain name at same place, that would be great too.
I've checked out some hosting services and most for an add free site with major
storage space are running in between $5 and $10 U.S. per month, plus the $ 9 or
so domain name fee.
This will also be helpful once I get my game site up and hopefully going, but
currently I have a site with approx. 100 pages of content on all subjects, so
need the space, and pages do include JPEG pictures.
If anyone wants to privately email me with suggestions, see address below and
thanks to all.

well I posted a link the other day.
it came with others that I am hosting on dropbox.
the file is ken2.zip, not sure what subject I put it in but if you search the
archives you probably can find it.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1407689/ken2.zip
this contains all the kensgames.
I found another of darkness uncompressed with no installer which is where I got
the reg code from.
but I just uploaded the ken zip i guess I could upload the other copy but then
its more crap I need to put up there.
this file will be valid for a while at any rate I have no plans to kill it or
any of the other stuff I currently have up there.

Re: [Audyssey] off topic, web host help question

2010-03-29 Thread shaun everiss
hmmm not sure.
I know here openhost has been good for a few bucks not sure though.
dropbox has some good rates, if you have a spare system you probably can have
windows and dropbox can manage your files you have for bits and bobs.
your website though would have to have loads of dropbox links to it and things.
another thing you could try is publicftp.com used to be free but got bogged
down.
so they charge but thats basically an ftp and you pay a subscription.
I think it supports domains to and you sertainly can shove a site on there.

[Audyssey] TOC: map builder error, for David Greenwood

2010-03-29 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Hello David. I'm still waiting to get on the gmagamestalk list, but I have
a bug report.

I have constructed a map that checks out with the check/compile command. I
attempt to start a new game and go to the your maps selection under map
type and immediately the game exits with a runtime error 5. Is this a known
problem and is there a work-around?

Re: [Audyssey] more rock band 2. crush crush crush this time.

2010-03-29 Thread Orin
Practice. And lots of it. Might wanna start on bass first to get the hang of
speed and such.

An easy guitar one off the top of my head, if you have the original Rock Band,
is Blitzgrieg Bop by the Remones. Fast strumming, but I was able to figure out
the cords within about a minute, and most sections in that song repeat. Learn
each section once and you'll get it.

And due to said fast strumming, I haven't been able to 100 percent it. Maybe
I'll put up a recording of me doing it; my recordings would be of better
quality, though I'm not as good on expert because, well, I haven't spent enough
time on that particular difficulty. This should hopefully change though. If you
want something hard, try drums on expert. Well, they're hard for me on medium
because my coordination is off at the moment.

Re: [Audyssey] more rock band 2. crush crush crush this time.

2010-03-29 Thread Yohandy
practice's definitely the way to go. the more you do it, the easier it'll
become and you'll eventually notice that you're figuring out the notes and
chords a lot faster. I'm totally hopeless at drums too haha! would
definitely appreciate some input from the RB drummers on here. I'm
considering learning Chop Suey next. or attempting to learn it. It sounds
quite terrifying lol. Joe or anyone else, if you guys have skype I can
attempt to explain how I do it on there. Perhaps orin could join as well and
we can have a little rock band get together hehe. We'll all learn from each
other!

Practice. And lots of it. Might wanna start on bass first to get the hang
of speed and such.

An easy guitar one off the top of my head, if you have the original Rock
Band, is Blitzgrieg Bop by the Remones. Fast strumming, but I was able to
figure out the cords within about a minute, and most sections in that
song repeat. Learn each section once and you'll get it.

And due to said fast strumming, I haven't been able to 100 percent it.
Maybe I'll put up a recording of me doing it; my recordings would be of
better quality, though I'm not as good on expert because, well, I haven't
spent enough time on that particular difficulty. This should hopefully
change though. If you want something hard, try drums on expert. Well,
they're hard for me on medium because my coordination is off at the
moment.

nope you sure don't. most totally blind individuals can play it just
fine. It's a bit hard to explain how to do so if you've never played
the game. it mostly involves good listening skills and the ability to
think logically to some degree but it's a bit more involved than that.
let me know if you would like me to explain anything specifically and I
will try.

 Jayson

 // Define sound objects.
 sound logo; // Starting sound.
 sound amb; // Background sound.
 sound walk; // Movement sound.
 sound bumpl; // Bump left edge.
 sound bumpr; // Bump right edge.
 sound youlose;
 sound youwin;

 // Define variables we'll need.
 int position; // The player's position on the board.
 int bumps; // How many times we've bumped an edge.
 int moves; // How many times we've moved successfully.

 void main() {
 // Load sounds.
 amb.load(amb.wav);
 bumpl.load(bumpl.wav);
 bumpr.load(bumpr.wav);
 logo.load(logo.wav);
 walk.load(walk.wav);
 youlose.load(youlose.wav);
 youwin.load(youwin.wav);
 // Play the logo.
 logo.play_wait();
 wait(1000);

 // Initialize the environment.
 position = 0;
 bumps = 0;
 moves = 0;
 show_game_window(Jayson's Test Game);
 amb.volume = -10.0;
 amb.play_looped();

 // The main game loop!
 while (true) {
 if (bumps  5) {
 // You lose!
 amb.stop();
 wait(50);
 youlose.play_wait();
 wait(100);
 exit();
 }
 if (moves = 100) {
 // You win!
 amb.stop();
 wait(50);
 youwin.play_wait();
 wait(100);
 exit();
 }
 if (key_down(KEY_RIGHT)) move_right();
 if (key_down(KEY_LEFT)) move_left();
 }
 }

 // Move right.
 void move_right() {
 if (position == 49) {
 // Oops. Too far. Bump.
 bumpr.play_wait();
 wait(100);
 bumps ++;
 return;
 }
 moves ++;
 position ++;
 walk.play_wait();
 wait(50);
 }

 // Move left.
 void move_left() {
 if (position == 0) {
 // Oops. Too far. Bump.
 bumpl.play_wait();
 wait(100);
 bumps ++;
 return;
 }
 moves ++;
 position --;
 walk.play_wait();
 wait(50);
 }
