Re: [Audyssey] A question for Aprone
Hi Yohandy, I don't believe what you want to do is possible based on my understanding of the Windows API. You can put a laptop display to sleep to save battery power etc, but Windows is designed to wake up the display as soon as someone presses a key or moves the mouse around. You forget, I think, that someone sighted would have no use for such a program as you describe, and therefore that functionality was never built into the Windows API to begin with let alone programs to disable the display. There is however an alternative way to get what you want. Someone could lower the brightness on the display, darken it, so that the text is harder to read unless you are very close to the display. That might prevent any snooping over your shoulder. HTH On 6/14/11, Yohandy yohand...@gmail.com wrote: Or to anyone that might know the answer really. Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Audio Support
well tom, when entombed was in testing, we would jump from alpha to beta status quite a lot. Each alpha had several revisions, then would jump to beta then full. We did that till 1.0, then almost immediatly after 1.02, we dropped to beta revisions because of bugs. In the latest test unstable version we have dropped to alpha again. So we only stayed in production mode for a little while, so it can go backwards as well as foreward and can do that many times over. At 08:55 a.m. 15/06/2011, you wrote: Hi Philip, Well, I think you are right. The primary mistake I made with beta 19 was simply that I didn't explain to the end users that this was to be considered an experimental release only and not in anyway a full production release. Beta 18 was an official production release were beta 19 wasn't. Beta 19 was an experiment to see how well the cross-platform engine run on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 which I should have been up front about from the beginning. Plus I didn't say why I had removed joystick and mouse support, and people assumed the worst and thought that I was intending on taking it out of the final release when it was only intended for that specific release or build only. The thing is, and I wish I had made this clearer from the beginning, what we have is two different engines more or less in production at the same time. I've got the Windows specific version of the engine which is definitely production quality, has been in development for a couple of years, and is fairly stable. Then, we've got the cross-platform or Linux version of the engine that isn't yet production quality mainly because I haven't found something comparable to DirectX I can replace those components with. I've not actually converted the full Windows engine over to Linux yet so there are a lot of things that need doing like adding joystick support, for example, before it is 100% up to par for writing production quality games as is in evidence with beta 19. Plus I confess when it comes to writing applications for Linux I'm still largely in the dark about many of the libraries and APIs it uses. I've been writing both private and professional software for Windows for probably 10 years so when it comes to Windows core APIs and components I pretty much know what I'm doing so I can put together something pretty quickly and it will be pretty stable because of my past experience. With Linux if you tell me to write an application using one of the graphics toolkits like GTK+, QT, WX, etc I'm going to have to study up on it, write some experimental code, etc because I have no background experience working with those APIs. The only times I've been called upon to write a professional application for Linux such as a graphical front end for a MySQL database I wrote it in Java using the cross-platform Swing toolkit, and since Java is all pretty self-contained that doesn't count as practical experience for what i'm doing now with this cross-platform engine. So its all pretty much experimental code at this point as far as the cross-platform engine is concerned. I think the best thing to do right now is to finish MOTA using the Windows specific engine since it is production quality, get the game sold using that technology, and put off finishing the cross-platform engine until that is out of the way. That way when I say I've got an experimental release that might be cross-platform people aren't going to be as upset with me because if they don't like the experimental cross-platform version they can fallback on 1.0 which is stable and up to their personal standards. The lesson I've learned is this. First, be up front about my intentions, long term goals or plans, and people will understand what I'm after. Second, attach, if possible, a buglog.txt file to the release so people will be informed what problems are in the release and what is on the todo list for the next upgrade. Third, don't try and remove a bunch of features after you just released them in a prior release as some people aren't going to respond well to bleeding edge code regardless of how temporary the removal might or might not be. Hi Thomas, I have the same understanding after reading further into the topic, though I am uncertain as to how often you may issue this command. What would happen, for instance, if one were to send the command to all windows 5 or 10 times per second? My guess is that it might drain the battery of any laptop rather quickly, so I think the only other option is to go and mess with drivers on the direct hardware level. Not uninstalling, but disabling them temporarily. I'm pretty sure that there must be a way to accomplish this. I know another that tried to do this and messed up the laptop pretty bad. Now I do know if a screen saver can do it so can software. I don't think the one that tried knew enough programming to do it right. I had a old dell that if it had a external plug in the video port. The screen would go blank and it couldn't tell if external plug was real or not. It did the same as speaker jacks do when using headphones. Got a question for you. With all the lists your on and all the questions you see, and know the answers are in the help or doc's for the program. How many do you actually know that read them? Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Audio Support
Hi Charles, That may be true, and I personally agree with you. However, not everyone shares that opinion or has the same expectations. Beta 18 was a fairly stable release, had decent audio, full joystick/mouse support, analog jumping, and so forth so the public was expecting something like that for beta 19. When they discovered some setbacks, degration of features, based on a different version of the engine it wasn't at at all what they had come to expect based on prior history of the project. What Philip said is true. Some warning or note that this was experimental code with degrated features might have prepared the public for what was to be expected. Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Audio Support
Hi Trouble, That's something as a game developer I'm not sure how to handle. It is one thing to spend months of writing documentation only to have some user come on the list and ask hundreds of questions that can easily be answered by reading the manual. The mainstream games do have a bit of a solution for this problem by having training levels that talk you through the basics like walk forward, stop, now hold down alt+forward to jump forward, etc. That seems to work out fairly well for the mainstream games because it is more interactive than a manual. I wonder if perhaps that might be the way audio games should go as well. Either way there are things such as known problems, changes, or just side notes that have to be written down. If the end users don't read it it is their problem. They just make it our problem to because we have to repete ourselves time and again because they don't have enough brains to read the readme file with the software. Re: [Audyssey] A question for Aprone
Hello there, I recall a discussion on a list awhile back on saving battery power in a laptop. Most if not all laptops have the ability to hook an external monitor to the laptop. There will be a key combo that you can hit to switch the display from the laptop LCD to the external monitor. If I understand this right when you do this switch the LCD is powerd down. This will hide what you ar doing from snooping eyes if you have headphones hooked to the laptop. Re: [Audyssey] A question for Aprone
Hi Philip, There probably is a way to accomplish this, but I'm just unclear as to how to go about it at the moment. I've seen two very good suggestions already like switching from the display to the external video port of the laptop if it has one, and I just looked at the Windows 7 projector settings as was recommended here and it seems there is a way to turn the display off temporarily. At least under Windows 7. Not sure about XP though. So perhaps there is some obscure method for disabling the display in the Windows API after all. That would be much preferable over messing with the display at the hardware/driver level. wow.this has generated quite a bit of discussion. guess there are lots of people interested in this.Maybe it's just me who thinks so, but if someone made such a program and it worked successfully, the programmer could probably sell it for a few bucks and make some decent amount of cash. not only will people want this for piece of mind, but also like some of you pointed out, to save on battery power. laptop batteries die real fast as some of you probably know hehehe. really sucks that there doesn't seem to be a way to do it though. I'd try that external monitor trick, but I've no idea where I can find the manual for this laptop. anyone know if there's a site that contains laptop manuals? - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 5:31 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] A question for Aprone Hi Yohandy, I don't believe what you want to do is possible based on my understanding of the Windows API. I'm looking for a program that's able to turn off my laptop's display. when I go somewhere with my laptop, I get a little paranoid due to the fact I've no idea if anyone's reading what I'm doing over my shoulder. thing is this laptop won't allow me to turn off my display. at least not that I know of. can this actually be done with software? I know there are programs that can turn the display off, but as soon as one starts typing the displays switches itself back on. this of course, makes the programs useless. I'm willing to pay anyone that can code this as I've been looking for such a program for a very long time and can't find one. Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Audio Support
well tom if I may speak my mind, a lot of mainstreams are going into that as well as a manual. I alert your attention to the halflife series of games. You are trained, and go through quite a few levels. walking, jumping, junping trap-ps, climbing running, run-jumping. Etc including what will happen when you fall into a trap what you want to avoid, etc. Ofcause, that may cost you a bit extra if you have to get someone to record the training levels, you could do that with sapi but the mainstreams always had in the case of halflife a voice saying things like good, or whatever progress updates, and a main voice female in this case telling you what to do. You would have to repeat things to if the player needed it again. In the long term this will rock. But in the short term it will probably cost you a few extra bucks depending on the source you grab things from, and how fancy, along with the initial coding of stuff. So there are advantages about this and dissadvantages about it. Starting will be quite sucky, and hard and crappy but after that it should rock. Not to mention that will be another sound loaded in memmory. Though you probably could minimise that by only loading the level sounds for each level or in fact each room or area to keep that down but then I am no programmer it could take ages to do this and that. You could always do the trainer afterwards if you don't want to code that now. You could even if you wished as an experiment try to train the new panning system abbrupt and crappy that it is. One of the major issues is I have to stop with this panning to pick up an object and I like running and getting, though I realise thats wishfull thinking if i was in the real world. I'd have to stop to scoop something. At 02:29 a.m. 16/06/2011, you wrote: Hi Trouble, That's something as a game developer I'm not sure how to handle. Re: [Audyssey] A question for Aprone
well I havn't bothered myself, but generally when home I have the laptop hooked up to at least 2 external hard drives, a usb scanner, printer and fan unit so battery is not a issue for me though I'd have to make the stuff go away and the system gets hot with games going. [Audyssey] Dog who Hates Toast - an insane, word association game.
Version 0.3b is posted, and it changes things a bit internally. While improving the quality of the random word switching, I found a small bug that was actually the reason it sometimes swapped out words that had already been swapped out. I'm happy to say, it seems to work much better now! When you reach 10 tasks, it starts swapping 2 words, which is not news to many of you. However, I have also made it so that sometimes, after this point, it won't tell you the exact room to find your item in. For instance, it might tell you to get the alarm clock, and leave off the hint that it is in the bedroom. When you hit 30 tasks, the game will begin changing 3 words each time! I'm also pleased to inform everyone, that the game can now be won if you manage to complete 50 tasks for the crazy guy. You'll be treated with a short story letting you know how things worked out. I've also squashed the different bugs people have brought to my attention. I would recommend starting over once you download the new 0.3b version. It will probably work fine with old saved games, but I can't guarantee it, and it's probably better to be safe than sorry. While using this new version, you will have your last task saved into a file called lasttask.txt, in the game's directory. For people who want to share crazy sentences, this seemed like a convenient way to get the message out of the game. I know screen readers can save what they read into a text log, but I didn't want people to have to go through the extra steps if they didn't want to. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hello, was there supposed to be a link to this E-mail? Alfredo Well that's odd. I went on Audyssey, and I don't see the original post anymore. I don't know if it got lost, deleted, moved, or what. Oh well, I do have a copy of the original message, so I will paste it here for those of you who have no idea what this thread is even about. Hey guys, I've been busy most of the day, but now that I'm home I wanted to post another odd little idea I had while I was stuck at work. Like the Temporal game idea, I have no idea if this would be fun or just a waste of 15 minutes of your life that you can never get back. Haha, I guess I'm just warning you ahead of time. Dog who Hates Toast, is a little memory, and word association game. You are helping a crazy guy, me of course, organize his house. As Aprone tells you where to put items, he slowly goes more and more insane. Each time you complete a task, a common word is forever swapped out for some random word in Aprone's vocabulary. You'll be informed of the new word swap, but you must remember them as they start to build up. In your mind, you must work on associating his new words with the old ones, so that you can still understand him well enough to complete the next task. It really doesn't take long before Aprone is rambling off gibberish to you, and expecting you to understand him. While testing, I have managed to get about a dozen tasks complete, but I honestly have no idea how far someone can go. I am posting this, just to see people's reactions, but also I'm wanting to know how far people can get. www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/dogwhohatestoast.zip --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] looking for new installer of self destruct
Hi Jack, The new installer fixes most of the issues, although not the fact that the keygen doesn't work. Some people have reported this but I have no way of discovering the source of the problem since I don't have the code for the keygen. However, yes, the new uninstaller works, it installs the keygen to the Self Destruct folder, it installs the DirectX8 VB wrapper for users running Windows above XP, it adds the keygen to the start menu shortcuts, and the uninstaller works no problem, all on the newer installation. Since the games are now modified to state their place in the audiogames hierarchy I will allow third party hosts to the files, hence the reason why I uploaded them to Dropbox. I.E. there are no references to XLStudios, nor X-Sight Interactive in the new games, since we are no longer able to support them for varying reasons. As for the Super Deekout cheats, you have to earn them. *Grin*. Again, the link to the new Self Destruct installation file is: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5285041/selfdest.exe Hope that helps. They did that with Terraformers and you also have training levels in Microsoft Flight sim x. At 10:29 AM 6/15/2011, you wrote: Hi Trouble, That's something as a game developer I'm not sure how to handle. First, be up front about my intentions, long term goals or plans, and people will

[Audyssey] Battleship / New Client Release
Hi Gamers, I'm happy to say that version 1.3 of the RS Games Client has been released! We've also released a brand new title, RS Games Battleship! Version 1.3 includes the following new features: -Added first letter navigation in menus. Pressing a letter will move you to the first option starting with that letter. Pressing it again will move you to the next option. If there is only one option starting with a particular letter, it will automatically be selected. For example, in Uno, you can now press D to draw a card, since this is the only option in that menu starting with the letter D. Note that first letter navaigation takes precedence over hotkeys. -Added in Auto Update on all platforms. This allows the client to update to a new version automatically when it is released. After updating, the client will automatically start on Windows and Mac, but due to the varying environments of Linux, you will need to start the Linux version manually after an update. - Your sound volume preferences will now automatically be saved. This is a mandatory update, meaning you must download the new client to continue playing. Head over to www.rsgames.org to download the update. To read the Battleship documentation, visit www.zanosoft.net/zgp/doc/battleship.html I hope you enjoy this new release. -Ryan --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. I agree totally. They should really be sucking some a**. That's pretty crappy when people have to make fun of someone because they didn't get something released on the exact date specified. Nobody made fun of Sir Thomas when he was late releasing Mota Betas. The whole thing was crap. Sincerely, Angela p.s. i know this message will get me banned and you kno what? I don't give a f***. All you people are stupid and have nothing better to do than sit around and make fun of others for not getting a game out on time. Dark, because you are a moderator, does that give you the right to do that? i don't think so. People are people. They have lives other than this. I play alter aeon and people like Oriol who genuinely care about people are cool. As for the rest of you, I think all who was involved in that stupid scammers4 buslsh*** should apologize.
