Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racer is live!

2007-06-21 Thread Josh
Davy, here's what to do. Do you have $35 or so in cash in your pocket? if
so, then head on over to one of the stores in your area and ask them for a
pre-paid visa or pre-paid pre-loaded rechargeable credit card. They just
came out with these and what you do is it's kind of like a money order I
guess. you give them the cash, and they put the cash on this card. but once
the money runs out, you just take it to the store again, put more cash on
it, and you're ready to go and use the card again. And as far as I know you
can only spend what money you put on the card.
See if that solution works for you.

Ok I think I might know h9ow to beat the two hardest difficulties. I want to

 Hi.

I've just bought, downloaded and enstalled rale racer, however every time
I try and run the game, instead of showing the registration screen I get
 the message signature is incorrect

I'm running the net framework 2.0, and in the E-mail I got from che I
understand that this can cause problems running the registration for the
game if your not also running net framework 1.1.

However, the last time I tried installing net framework 1.1 I ended up
with the most horrible system start up problems which made it nerely
impossible for me to use my Pc at all and I was only able to fix with a
 system restore.

At the time Thom ward said this was something to do with net Framework 1.1
creating a separate account on my pc, but sinse it was a hell! of a
problem to fix (as Hal wouldn't start up before windows did), I'd really
rather not have to do it again.

Is there any other way i can get rale racer to work?

Is there a registration program that I can run somewhere? -- perhaps
in the Rale racer folder which will save the need for the net framework?

any help would be much appreciated sinse I really don't! want to have to
deal with net framework 1.1 again if I can help it.

Re: [Audyssey] Rale racer registering trouble

ok dark, Both jaws and window-eyes start up before the log-on screen starts
up. so then jaws and window-eyes are able to read the log on screen. this
has been in jaws and window eyes for some time now. To find user accounts
just go to user accounts, it's in control panel. start menu settings control
panel in classic view or just start menu control panel in the regular
windows mode. Then go to user accounts. then click the dotNet or the ask
dotnet framework account and delete it using the delete button which you'll
have to tab to. Jaws and window-eyes can display this account stuff in a
virtual window or in window-eyes browse mode so you can easily change and
modify your different user accounts.

 Hi,
why don't you just download the demo version of Jaws or Win-eyes and set
 it
to start before you log into the system? That way you could easily
 install
.Framework 1.1, get around the logon screen with no trouble and then just
remove the .net framework accounts from the system?
It would reliably fix your issue, and you might have to do it in the end,
 as
I doubt there could be a way to work around the implemented RR licensing
 system.

 Hi.

well, I've installed net framework 1.1 and am having exactly the same
problem I had with the thing before. Namely, that during start up, on the
blue screen before even the windows chime sound, everything just sticks
and the only way around the problem is pressing ctrl alt delete then
 enter.

The good news is, that I have managed to register rale racer, however this
really is a pest (it takes absolutely ages to start my computer up), so
I'll have to do a system restore which will wipe out both net framework
1.1 and my registration of rale racer.

 does anyone have any suggestions?

(I believe Thom ward said it was something to do with user accounts, but
as I have no idea how these work, I'm stil fairly clueless).

 thanks in advance,

 Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Rale racer registering trouble

2007-06-21 Thread Josh
go get yourself a demo of jaws8 or the latest window-eyes, install it, if
window-eyes tell it to start before windows starts or start as a service the
start up options for it are in the file menu. you can get o the window-eyes
control panel with control backslash and if you get the demo jaws insert j
gets you to the jaws settings menus and utilities. Go to user accounts in
control panel, you'll see ask-dot-net-framework account. press enter on it,
now go to delete, and delete the account. it'll confirm the deletion which
you'll have to tab to delete again.

 Hi.

thanks a lot for the advice, however I'm afraid I'm now in a highly nasty
 position.

I've uninstalled net framework 1.1, and keep getting the the signature is
invalid message when I attempt to run Rale racer (this did not happen
 with
the demo, so I don't know what is going on here).

Also, whatever Net Framework 1.1 does at start up is stil happening. I've
checked the user accounts in the control panel, and there doesn't seem
 to
be anything there that shouldn't be, sinse the only accounts are user
computer administrater and Guest account which seems to be off.

Has anyone got any other suggestions? unfortunately, sinse i find the
 start
up lag time caused by net framework 1.1 fr too much to be
reasonable, I'll probably have to do the system restore, and then wait for
 a
new, more streamlined registering process for rale racer before I'll be
 able
 to play the game.

 All the best,

 Hi,
why don't you just download the demo version of Jaws or Win-eyes and
 set
 it
to start before you log into the system? That way you could easily
 install
.Framework 1.1, get around the logon screen with no trouble and then
 just
remove the .net framework accounts from the system?
It would reliably fix your issue, and you might have to do it in the
 end,
 as
I doubt there could be a way to work around the implemented RR
 licensing
 system.

 Hi.

thanks a lot for the advice, however I'm afraid I'm now in a highly nasty

 Dark.

Hmmm, sinse the problem occurred just before windows gets running , I'd

I'm rying netframework 1.1 again, just to see if I have the same issues

Well, top speed is a relative term in rail racer, if you gear ratio is
 low,
 your top speed will drop.
The class 3 tracks tend to be tighter, so it is hard to get up to 250 MPH
an dhigher, so you want to drop the gear ratio for those tracks.

That stupid kid! I guess he needs to understand a little more
about pirating. He's only 11 I think. But I might have to agree
with him on one point. Many of the games out there aren't really
worth playing. Rail Racer, Judgment Day, Super Liam, Lone Wolf,
Gma Tank Commander, and some others are really worth my time, and
eventually, even most of those lose their replay value at some
point. But I don't agree with Andy that pirating games is fun.

That's not a good excuse. You see, people buy software over the
net all the time. It may not be as secure, but it's much more
convenient. Also, I trust the devs of these games. I doubt that
 they will use that information.

 Hi Davy,
The sad truth is people like Andy would crack and steel games wether
they are the greatest games or the worse games on the market. His
complaint is the games are over priced, but considering all the games he
is complaining about were all written by single developers with little
cash, time, or ability to write the next PS2 or XBox smash hit. Believe
me if I had that kind of money and skill I wouldn't be writing games for
the blind. I probably have the skill to do so, but not for what I would
be getting back for the work. He clames the blind devs are stupid, but
in actuality such smart mouthed children such as Andy Smith are the ones
 that could be applied to.
As a game developer and application developer in general I know what
skills, time, energy, etc it takes to bring one of these titles to
market at all. I'm certainly not doing it for money alone, but I would
like some cash for the labor involved in doing it. He doesn't realise
what it takes to support a family and do this games thing on the side.
He is just holy ignorant of real life demmands to make these things.
If Andy thinks he can do better than Che, GMA, BSC, etc then I want to
see him do it. Have at it Andy.

2007-07-02 Thread Josh
Andy, why do your messages make me suspicious of something? I don't know
what exactly, but just something. My advise, spend less time worrying about
security this and security that, and go buy games and shop online. and if
something happens, do like I did and change your credit card if you have
one. If I were as paranoyed as you seem to be I probably wouldn't even own a
computer or if I did I wouldn't have any type of internet access at all. Are
you going to get rid of your internet access someday because it's just not
safe?

I know, that game devs wont use that info against us. Now if I took
the time to actually learn a programming language, I am starting easy
and trying to make simple things with autoit, so I can build up, and
then create some games. I wont even bother to secure them. Just type
in some random letters in a generated email or something. But, I know
game devs wont use that info. But if anyone here listtens to security
now which is at grc.com/seciritynow, you will know that there are
quite a lot of exploits in SQL databases, etc. And the fact that Liam
makes everyone type in their names and email addresses makes me even
more nervous. So? You wont give it away, I trust you liam. But,
hackers anyone? Ever heard of them? Anyone know what they do, ever
thought of them? Well probably not; I got this rediculious spam book
that showed how to break into databses and stuff. I wont do it of
course, but it is amazingly easy to break a script and get to the
underlying info. Reaking havoc with people's information is not good
at all. If you dont believe that any server, any server even paypal is
at risk. I probably sound paranoid and I wouldn't blame you for
thinking that, but it makes somee feel nervous. If you have a firewall
antivirus, nope; no good on web pages. Think your secure if you've got
the latest windows patches? No. Microsoft has failed to release
patches to hundreds of things. And now we're drifting off topic with
windows security. While I agree with everyone here, that paying for a
game is of utmost importance, and I honestly would pay for a game, I
really would, but you really dont know what's under the hood.
Think about that, the next time you pay for a game. And if you think
your safe if you've got that padlock icon and the https://blabla.bla?
 Well, not really.

So think about that the next time, you do online shopping. I even
heard of awful stories of people's stuff getting robbed and stolen.
And no matter how much security is in place, there is always a way.
Thats the only reason for my cracking stuff. And surely others as
well. Also go to twit.tv if you dont believe my blabbing. Its not
really blabbing though. But still if you still think that you are
safe. Well. One day itll happen. Im sure of it.

  agree on
that with some people, but frankly not many games deserve being

Yep. Money orders are good. However, They would be tough if we are

 Euros, Pounds, you name it.

Is there a way to save the game in SoundRTS? Someone asked this before
 but
I can't remember what the response was, or even if there was a
 response...
I think I'm starting to maybe like Sound RTS. I was never usually one
 for
strategy games, because they are so non-linear, what I mean is, you can
pretty much do whatever you want, obviously within the confines of the
 game,
where as linear games you do things in order, or you do things to
 achieve
 a
specific goal, etc, and in strategy games since they are so non-linear,
 I
lose my sense of direction and perspective really quickly. But I think
 I'm
gonna like SoundRTS. My question is, can I have say two peasants
 mining
gold, two peasants gathering wood, and two peasants building a
 building,
 all
at the same time? Or do you have to control one thing at a time? Also
 I
haven't seen any enemies yet, is that because I haven't proceeded far
 enough
in the game? So far I gathered wood, mined for gold, and built a
 barracks.
The keys are a bit confusing I kind of wish that the devs would have
 made
this menu-based with arrows and enter key and such. I can't remember
 which
key does what and I get confused easily but then I've only tried to
 play
 it
twice since I downloaded it, I'm sure it just takes practice.
Wow, sorry for the long-winded post.

Microsoft will be completely dropping support for it on Windows 2000,

There is Visual Basic .Net 2005 which is a fully modern object oriented
language which has allot in common with Visual Basic 6, but also is
 quite diferent in many ways.
Another language used allot by blind gamers is C# .Net 2005, called
C-Sharp, which is also easy to learn, and is a great beginners language.
You can download free compilers for C# .Net and Visual Basic .Net from
the Microsoft web site, and you can purchase accessible books from
 http://safari.oreilly.com.
As far as registration goes the reg info can be stored in a dll and can
be easily attached to your application. All you need to do is follow the
SDK or API guidelines for having the application use the dll to decode
 the product keys.
I'm right now working on my reg program, and if you know what you are
doing they aren't super difficult to make.
Basically you need three things. A dll to generate and decode product
keys, a reg program which takes the product key checks to see it is
valid and write out a license file, and a product key generator that the
developer uses to creat the keys.
That's all I am going to say on reg program development as that is a
 sensative subject amung developers.
How the keys are generated, where they are stored, etc is a matter of
 privacy.

Ok, I've demolished the computer in the hardest
single-person mode. Sadly, it wasn't very
difficult as the computer AI isn't very
sophisticated. If it can't overwhelm you at the
beginning, it has a tendency to lose all its
military units. I found myself playing a game of
maze tracking to find the four squares that
contained the buildings I had to neutralize
before I could gain victory. By this time, I had
six footmen, 5 archers and two knights, so I was
fairly sure I wouldn't run into anything bigger
than me. And, given the time I took, and the
buildings that the enemy had, I should have
encountered a constant stream of units, at least footmen and archers.

I think this is a brilliant concept, and once you
get used to the interface, which is unlike
anything I've seen in the audio games market, it
is a game with vast potential, particularly in
multi-player mode, which is something I intend to
try tomorrow evening, if I can figure out how to do it.

A couple of quirks to discuss. Having studied
French a long time back, I was able to figure out
the odd speaking of certain numbers. In French,
there is no seventy, eighty or ninety. Seventy
is written as sixty ten. Eighty is written as 4
* 20. Ninety is written as four * twenty
ten. I've heard this harks back to the
disastrous loss to the Germans in 1870. Anyway,
when you hear that you have sixty sixteen wood,
this = 76, four twenty five = 85 and four twenty
nineteen = 99. I think this also extends to the
treatment of numbers over one hundred, so that
six one hundred four twenty fifteen would be
6*100 + 4*20 + 15 = 695. This is a quirk of
translation, and should probably be addressed in
the full English translation release.

Wish list:

1. A better computer AI that takes advantage of
its buildings, resources and ability to construct
units to replenish itself after the first
devastating losses against a careful
player. Ideally, the computer should be able to
make the same choices as the player can do by
rule, and should be constantly striving to renew and upgrade its forces.

2. I'd like to see the cap of 20 food production
removed, (if such exists). It imposes an
artificial limit on unit construction, and while
constrained choice creates some interesting
tactical choice elements, there are enough
resource-based constraints already in the game
not to need this artificial one that violates the theme of the game.

3. It would be nice if peasants and footmen
could cross-grade at a barracks, and perhaps
footmen could upgrade to archers as well. This
would be chrome and isn't a necessary feature,
but it would afford the player some more flexibility.

4. It would be nice to be able to set a flag to
tell troops to capture installations, rather than
simply destroying them. For instance, capturing
a town hall, keep or castle would give the captor
the resources already stored in that facility, a
farm would provide production, etc. The choice
between raiding and conquest could be interesting
and lend an air of desperation with the choice of
trying to hold an installation, or destroying it in the face of an enemy.

5. I think farms ought to work like gold mines
and woods do, in that peasants should have to
exploit them to store up food, and units are paid
rations periodically in order to keep them in the
field. This would bring food in line with the
other basic commodities, and further constrain
the choices of the player(s) as they have to mind
their food supply as well as their gold and wood supplies.

6. In order to implement my suggestion about
capturing facilities, we would need an additional
order on the military units' menus, something
like set mode to claim/destroy, like the set mode
to offensive/defensive option that already exists.

7. Just for ease of reading numbers, I'd like to
see the English numbering system used as, while I
understand the French system, it isn't intuitive
for me when spoken in English. I know that
quatre vingt-sisx is 86, but four twenty six takes me a second to parse.

game that came bundled with the nintendo. You had a gun that you would
shoot at ducks on screen with. There was also this dog that tended to
laugh at you if you missed ducks. Of course he was all smiles if you
 shot
 one down.

I hope you find it fun.

No. It would probably be more along the lines of Shades of Doom. STFC and

old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey. I've not
come anywhere close to beating it, and don't want to really. I've yet
to really make it much of anywhere--true, I've gotten fairly rich and
found a few rather amazing places, but haven't yet found any real
direction. I don't mind this in the least. One thing I love about this
game, which I haven't found anywhere else, is a sense of a world with
unlimited places to explore. There is this odd sense that if I just
keep going in a direction somewhere I'll find something interesting,
or run into a new town, or a new inn, or a new place where I can
appreciate the depth of detail that's offered here. I've never before
encountered a sense like the following: When the
character in Fallthru travels from town to town over roads, it seems
like he's really traveling somewhere. I get this odd sense that, wow,
that really did take three days! (That's game time, of course.) Since
I haven't really scratched the surface of this game yet, I have to
wonder what it'll be like if I keep going. I know this game isn't for
everyone. It's tedious and hard to get anywhere sometimes because
you're constantly trying to stay alive. There are so many places to
 go
that it is hard to choose. I find myself setting out long term goals
for spots I want to see and realizing, a few days and some food
 later,
that I really should've reconsidered. No other game has quite given
 me
this feeling. I'm just curious, therefore, if anybody on this list
still plays the game? If so, does it stay this engrossing all the way
through? No, don't answer that. I want to find out for myself. All

 Hi,
Awesome! I just downloaded all the music files, and happily been
enjoying myself listening to the Tomb Raider music which I remember from
my own sighted PC gamer days.
You know, if I could get my hands on the actual effects shut gun sounds,
swords, pain, etc I might be willing to do one or two TR games using the
Star Wars game engine which is well suited for the full blown 3D FPS
 genre.
Personally, my favorites were Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider IV. Angel
of Darkness was cool, but the story took a huge turn which made it much
darker than the previous five games.
I also know Angel of Darkness didn't have the same level of puzzle
solving which made the first four games fun.
As for myself the puzzles were just as much fun as Lora's battles with
Sharks, Yetti, Crocks, and other cool creatures.
I suppose I can dig around for my copies of the games and wrip the
sounds myself, but what a serious pain.

 Jim,
I did not take your comments ina negative manner.
Here is the analogy I offer:
I have something I wish to pass around..either for free or for $$$.
I make up a flier..and I either hang one flier on a phone pole near my
corner of my block..or maybe I even put it in the doors of all my close
 neighbors.
This offers me a possible audience of maybe 45 folks..maybe higher if
 there
is alot of foot traffic on my corner of folks walking to church or work.
Now I take the same flier..and post it on craig's list...EBay...or some
 similar sites..
 what I call mainstream sites!
Now I have a possible audience of hundreds of thousands of folks.
will this guarantee more folks come to me for my benefit?
maybe not..or maybe it will be a huge improvement?
At least when I post on those sites...I don't have to worry aobut my site
comingup 80th or lowe ron a list of sites when I type in blind and games
 into a search engine.
I can still do my local fliers...but I added possible new contacts by
 going
thru one of those mainstream web sites.
It is amazing how many folks just dont' know computers can talk..that
 blind
 folks can play games..
all they know is we can do braille.
I am not trying to change anyones opinions on how to do their business..
I am just offering the idea that there could be more if these sites were
 taken advantage of.
and by the by...Jim..you have some truly awesome games on your site.
 Robert

 Hi Robert,

I hope that this doesn't sound too negative, but in my experience sighted
people have little or no interest in our games. I mean I can get friends,
family and company to try my games while they are here on my computer and
they think that they are cool, but they never think that they are cool
enough to down load and play on their computer. I can't say that I blame
them either. Our games just do not compare to the games that they have
available to them. You know the ones with all of the wonderful visuals
and sounds as good as ours.

You know those darn sighted people are into visual things. grin

When I talked about diferent blind games being hosted..I was not clear.

if some of these great games for blind folks were hosted on a mainstream

they would be reviewed by sighted folks..printed in sighted

more word of mouth going on in the sighted/visualy impaired communities.
Having a game for the blind hosted on a mainstream server/web

 Hi.

I've actually had great success with teaching sighted friends how to
play our games. You're right. Most people will buy a new game for
their X-Box rather than go get Shades of Doom or Rail Racer, to name a
couple favorites. I think that we need to find a way to sell our ideas
 to bigger companies.

I'm very, very new to the world of object-oriented programming, and I
have to admit that it scares the living love outa me, but I was
thinking...what if the GMA Games game engine was shown to Microsoft or
Soni and they liked it. Then, there could be games made for blind and
sighted players alike. The problem is this. Very few games for both
blind and sighted individuals are quite fair. We've got more practice
with sound than they do, but visual components can give them a huge
advantage. That's why Sound RTS is so good, because it doesn't rely on
either. It just has a sorta high learning curve for people who aren't
used to the keyboard...namely many sighted individuals. The AQ
JediQuake mods do a great deal to level out the playing field...in
fact I am always amused by the number of times I kick some sighted
friend's butt and they're totally stunned.

The basis for this topic, though, was whether to host blind games on
mainstream sites, to generate PR. I'm not too good with names, but I
agree with the originator and proponent of this topic. The only thing
that PR can possibly do that is not useful to us is get ignored. Since
that's the status quo anyway, what's the difference? Is it not worth a
 try?

PS: I have a friend who learned how to understand Eloquence, the JFW
synthesizer, and can now listen to JFW almost as rapidly and easily as
I can. Does this mean that he'll go spend over a thousand sollars on
it? Probably not, but it's not the blind community's fault that
assistive tech is so expensive, even for us.

  Jim,
I did not take your comments ina negative manner.
Here is the analogy I offer:
I have something I wish to pass around..either for free or for $$$.
I make up a flier..and I either hang one flier on a phone pole near my
corner of my block..or maybe I even put it in the doors of all my close
  neighbors.
This offers me a possible audience of maybe 45 folks..maybe higher if
  there
is alot of foot traffic on my corner of folks walking to church or
  work.
At least when I post on those sites...I don't have to worry aobut my
  site
comingup 80th or lowe ron a list of sites when I type in blind and
  games
  into a search engine.
I can still do my local fliers...but I added possible new contacts by
  going
thru one of those mainstream web sites.
It is amazing how many folks just dont' know computers can talk..that
  blind
  folks can play games..
all they know is we can do braille.
I am not trying to change anyones opinions on how to do their
  business..
I am just offering the idea that there could be more if these sites
  were
  taken advantage of.
and by the by...Jim..you have some truly awesome games on your site.
  Robert

[Audyssey] sound rts a suggestion

2007-07-25 Thread Josh
Hello,

Well thanks to the tutorial I'm getting the hang of sound rts. But I have a
suggestion, the sounds of the peasants building and walking and doing things
is a bit quiet, it would be nice if you could raise and lower the volume of
these sounds as well as I'd like the sounds to be louder than they are.
I think the sounds of such things as fighting and other things are too
quiet.

 the tutorial.
The reason it is a php link is because I have installed tracking software
so I know how many times a particular file is downloaded. In case you are
curious, the RTS tutorial has been downloaded 78 times so far.

 Well, folks,
I finally have a webpage. I'm still using Kara's modgirl ftp site for
links, because I'm using Geocities for the web page and storage space is
limited. Here is the site and what it contains.
 The site:
 www.DTI.us.tt
It has World of Darkness, which is now freeware! See the register.txt
 file for the code.
The Sound RTS soundpack 4 modded from Bryan Smart's previous packs.
Enemy attack, where you shoot down jets, planes, choppers, and bombs
 And,
 Wrecking ball beta 1
free to download. Many more levels for this are coming!

I also have a site called the Treehouse, which shares a page with DTI.
 It
contains links to Teamtalk and channels on my Teamtalk server which is
always up and running, and which should be accessible.
By the way, if you have a good picture of a treehouse, send it my way and
I'll put it on the site.

 Coming soon,

If the author of Sound RTS adds SAPI support he
should offer the option of not using SAPI support.
 why do I say this...
I love the sounds built into this game..I love the ability to modify the
sound files in this game to my tastes.
Not everyone who has a windows XP system...has the money to go buy high
quality SAPI voices to add to their system.
and it would ruin the game to have to listen to the default Microsoft Sam
voice while playing this great game.
I was quite pleased to see the author made the wave files with the Daniel
voice..it is quite clear and easy to understand.
It was the same option I chose for a game I am working on.

as far as communication with other players..I offer the same Idea I
 already
 posted.
A pack of 30 or so Wave files with either friendly or aggresive messages
that would play on your opponents computer.
These files could be customized to the users liking.
Having a SAPI voice say I will kill you and over run your kingdom
has no real meat to it..but a human voice screaming that with swords
rattling in the background..now that will inspire fear in your enemy!

I also am asking for two possible additions to the game:
there are times I jus put my server up for others to play.
but I am bombarded with request to join a game.
an option to reply to this request with a Can't play right now wave
 file
or I refuse your challenge might be nice rather than the challenger
 just
sitting ther wasting time not know why you did not take his challenge.

 next:
Would it add to the game play if when you attack a farm or woodmill,
if you were offered the option to keep the farm or woodmill for yourself
rather than burn them to the ground?

Jean Luc...keep up the wonderful programming that you do so well!

 Hello all

I eventually got round to taking time to discover this game, and, it's
 great.
I noticed in the tutorial by Che that other sounds were used, and I no
discussions in this regard took place on list a few days ago, although
at the time I didn't take notice, because I simply didn't regard it as
 important.
However, could someone please tell me where to get hold of the newer
 sound pack for RTS?
Thanks for any help, and, great tutorial Che, this certainly got me
 hooked!

[Audyssey] sound rts other suggestion

2007-07-25 Thread Josh
Hi,

Instead of using a bunch of sound files, I think it would be easier where
applicable to use sapi voices on the computer and to allow you to choose the
voice you want, and set parameters like volume voice pitch and speed. That
would cut down on the use of sound files, using sapi5 would also allow you
to do text chat from within the game itself. Also, what about adding some
music? you could use mp3 music, but I think to keep the game small, some
midi music in midi files would be nice, also the volume of the midi could be
controled or the music could be turned off completely. Or mp3 music
whatever's easier.

Ok,
maybe I'm just not good at this game. I've been playing for a few hours and

the gold-mine to exploit it rather. And I send all my soldiers to b2 and set
their mode to offensive. they defeat the enemy and one or two are lost but I
never destroy a building. One time I did manage to exhaust a entire gold
mine though but by the time I go to move on to build a farm or barracks the
enemy soldiers catch up and wipe out my peasants and sometimes the town
hall.

The stuttering problem may come from not enough CPU. Maybe the
computer CPU is overloaded by other processes?

Here is an extract of Pygame's manual:
NOTE: there is currently a bug on some windows machines which makes
sound play back 'scratchy'. There is not enough cpu in the sound
thread to feed the buffer to the sound api. To get around this you can
increase the buffer size. However this means that there is more of a
delay between the time you ask to play the sound and when it gets
 played.

 Hi,
I have a suggestion for you, regarding the user manual.
Don't know if it's already in the wish list, as the other issues
 What about a glossary?
AGM has its own philosophy, its own concepts.
I am talking about a HTML page containing term and definition
 for example:
explaining the concept of building block, world, world
acoustic, audio environment, trigger, player, opponent...
for example I just read the basic tutorial, the one explaining the
 navigation into the audio environment.
First of all, it's very funny to enter there, we have an atmosphere
 it's like entering a shop!
I know I have this grid, with coordinates, and that's OK, it's like a
HTML table or an Excel spreadsheet.
But, then. how do I establish where to put the first building
 block? Which criteria are there?
What is the trigger and where is the best way to put it, and then
 opponent, obstacles, etc...
I'd like to start a project.
I already wrote a game some years ago, a HTML web-based audio game
(italian only) and the way I used was first of all writing the plot,
then the way to go. The rooms, conditions, questions/answers, then
planned which sounds and voice files I had to mix with written texts
 and dialogues.
For this reason I'd like to see other people's creations, to have an
idea. Now I have AGM in my hands and feel like a painter with a new
table, but with no colors on it. Or, with colors but they are all
packed, on the table there's nothing.
 Thanks.

  Hi Kelly,
No there are no sample games that ship with AGM, but the tootorials
gives you some simple games to build, and walks you step by step
through how to do it. The tootorials show a simple racing game,
  shooter
game, space game, and something else. They are very basic, and easy to

Re: [Audyssey] for Richard: what about created games?

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
you do not need the AGM to play your own games or other people's games
because the games are executable or .exe files that will run on any
windows2000 xp or vista computer.
all they need is your game folder. like if your game is called harry potter
game. just send that folder in a zip file and when they run your .exe file
the game will start.

 Hi,
as no one has any example game yet, I am wondering if an external
player, who doesn't even know about AGM, could have to download the
whole AGM package to be able to play my game I create.
Or if it's just an executable, with sounds and all, that can be
 launched, not depending on AGM.
That is...if I create games and distribute them, should I say,
careful that before downloading my game you must download 70
extra-mega bytes to have it ready to run because AGM is needed?
PS before really performing my studies on AGM and creating games, I
wanted to see other people's games, to realize what the AGM capabilities
 are.

[Audyssey] volume is too low in AGM

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
Hi,

I'm happy to report I fixed the volume of the AGM sounds volume being way
too low. I went into gold wave and raised it significantly. I will post the
link for the modified AGM sound pack as soon as it's done being uploaded to
divshare.com .
when you get the zip file. assuming your audio game maker folder is in the
root of the c drive or c:\ you would put it in:
c:\am\audio game maker\data\agm sounds\

keep an eye out for the AGM fix coming in a half an hour or an hour.

[Audyssey] audio game maker volume too soft

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
Hello,

For those of you who are experienceing the volume of the audio game maker to
be too soft. Here is a link to a fix for it. I batch converted all the files
and made the volume louder so you should have no trouble hearing the AGM
voices and sounds now. Put all 600 some files in the AGM sounds folder and
tell it to overwrite all, if it asks.

I don't se why you think there is very little possibility for this
 Thomas.
It seems to me it would be fairly elementary, just serialize and
deserialize the xml info from all the game objects, perhaps with a layer
 of
encryption in there so players can't change their own settings and done.
This is basically the way I do it with Rail Racer and it works
 beautifully.
This is something AGM definately needs badly, and I think would go a long
way to promoting game creators producing more varied and deper games.

 Hi Josh,

 quote
Also could a utility be written which will modify your game file to add a
 save and load game feature?
 End quote

As a developer myself I'd say there is very little possability for that.
Triditionally to save a game one needs to serialize a game object
which means convert all the objects data to binary, and then write it
out to a binary data file. Then, to restore the objects state the binary
data file has to be opened, binary data read back in, and converted back
to something the object can read. Bottom line, this entire process has
to be inside the game core where the objects themselves are to have
direct access to the object's data, and to recreate a game object based
on stored binary data at a later date and time.

[Audyssey] second attempt with AGM

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
Hi,

Ok here is a link to my second attempt it's called sword fight. So far I
tried to set up a trigger building block so when I press space it makes a
sword swing sound but it seems like it won't accept space as a trigger key
so i chose letter z. But the sound just loops for some reason. I put
trigger3 inside player building block1. I also set a border some istance
away and I don't hear a border sound. maybe I have to tell player one upon
collision with border play that sound? I set up 4 building blocks where I
wanted the border to be at. but no sound is played. But the same thing
happens when up arrow is pressed, the opponent attacks the player but the
player cannot attack for some reason. here's the link.

[Audyssey] AGM latest sample

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
Hi,

Ok I found out what I'm doing wrong. here's a message I got from the forum
pasted below.

Re: another sample

Hee Josh,

I looked in a very quick way to your game, i saw a few things that weren't
the way it should be. First of all you had several gamemanagers in the
world.
It is normal to only use one of them for each world ;). Your footsteps, your
hear them all the time. Why? Because you set the default sound on footsteps.
That isn't the way you should do it. Default sound is for the sound you make
always. Like a engine of a machine that is always runing, your as player the
sound of breathing. Connecting sounds to your actions goes as follows. Go to
the player building block, enter the menu and don't select set properties,
also not set reactions, but set reaction sounds. Here you can go through al
the reactions of the building block player. The first one(if i'm not
mistaking)
is attack. Confirm by pressing SPACE, now you can choose your attack sound.
The same way goes for al the other things, if a enemy needs a attack sounds,
search trough his reaction sounds for the right reaction and set the right
sound!. This goes for everything! Walking with the standard
settings(directional),
can also be set by reaction sounds. Set all the reactions:
xminus, xplus, yminus and yplus to the walk sound, and you will see that you
hear these sounds
while you are walking. Keep in mind that if you die as player, because of a
enemy, and you do that very fast, your player can't move anymore. How do you
know you are dead? Set a reactionsound to the reaction die. Easy as that ;).
Good luck with it,

Michiel

having played around with AGM for a few hours, here are my impressions so
 far.
First of all, hats off to you guys for taking on such an ambitious
project, I think once you include a few vital features and make some of
 the
interface options more intuitive, you will have a very successful program
for the blind community to enjoy.
I created 2 simple games to start with, just your basic walk around and
shoot stuff to get the hang of the interface.
The reaction settings are quite confusing at first, and take a good bit
 of
trial and error to get the hang of it.
I think some simple promts here would help tremendously, especially with
new users who are likely to get frustrated when they can't figure out how
 the triggers connect.
I had to read the documentation over and over, especially regarding the
calculators to get any positive results. The tutorials tell you what to
 do
step by step, but they do not explain each step enough as to why certain
things need to be done, especially with the calculators and comparisons.
The last game I worked on is a diving game, where the player will jump
from a diving board and do various flips and twists in the air before
breaking the surface of the water, with their score being based on how
 many
tricks they do and how cleanly they enter the water.
Unfortunately the controls don't seem to allow this level of input
 without
creating an entire interface of triggers from what I have learned so far,
but as I said I've only been at it a short time.
Is there a random number generator in AGM? If so, I haven't found it
 yet.
If not, it is sorely needed.
As mentioned before, the volume of the interface is too low, and being
able to loop the menus from one side to the other would be very helpful as
 well.
Including a save game feature is vital in my opinion, and since you guys
are using xml anyway, it should be relatively simple to do.
I think I will wait until the next version before continuing my diving
game, as I feel just a few more code additions will make the work much
 more
 efficient.
Lastly, at least one involved tutorial, with explainations for each step
of the way would be immensely helpful.
Congratulations team AGM, you guys should be very proud of what you have
done here, especially given the time constraints, and I for one look
 forward
very much to see where this project goes.
  Take care,
  Che

[Audyssey] I did it! I think . . .

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
Hi,

Ok. I think I did it. I remade the lite saber game thing. But there's only
one sound because I was focusing on one thing, making a keypress play a
sound. Well for some reason I still can't get the space key to make it play
a sound because the trigger by key won't accept space. So I made player1
just play the swing saber sound. No, I actually set a sound source building
block and set it to the sound. Then I made a trigger building block, set it
to trigger by key. chose the letter z and connected it to the player1 sound
source building block. So then when I tested it and hit z the sound played.
Don't know why I can't get space to do the same thing though or control or
any key i like.

I have created a simple shooter with AGM called Monster Mash.
Frankly, it isn't much fun, but it is a good starting place to see how
 the system works.
I am still having trouble figuring out the turn and move stuff, as the
sounds don't seem to pan properly.
I have posted a topic on the AGM forum if you want to check it out.
One thing I don't understand is how to have the ammo item reset itself to
full ammo, as you can only get ammo from it once, if anyone has an idea
 here let me know.
You can get the game and all setup files here:
 http://www.blindAdrenaline.com/uploads/monsterMash.zip
feel free to modify it all you want, this is just a learning project, if
you figure something out, please let me know.

[Audyssey] game directions

2007-08-03 Thread Josh
Hi,
What are the keys in your game? Could you make an mp3 tutorial on how you
put the game together? And most of all how you link spacebar to a sound
since I can't seem to do that. It seems like with sound rts, the AGM games
run a bit slow. Probably like with games made in python, they are
interpreted and so will run a bit slower but still it's a great game!

 Hello,

I found the solution to the volume of the sounds being too low in the
 audio
game maker program. There's a folder in the audio game maker folder
 called
AGM sounds or agm sounds. I think if someone goes through and raises the
volume of each mp3 to a higher volume and saves the mp3s in the same
 format
they were saved in to begin with the volume of the overall program will
 then

[Audyssey] AGM world border

2007-08-04 Thread Josh
Hi,
How do you create the border for a world? I tried out Kenn's durby game but
I couldn't get very far with it. I could move and stuff but maybe I was
having trouble because the borders were too close together and the world
wasn't big enough? How do you set borders and increase and decrease their
size? Also I think some game effects such as sound frequency changes and
things are badly needed in the next version of the AGM. If I want to make a
jet raceing game I need to do the following.
First of all I want the sound of the plane taking off to loop. I also want
it to have the sound of taking off so the frequency of the looped sound
would have to be raised over a certain amount of time. Next, I think the
calculator should be less restricting and have more options. It would be so
cool if you could look up physics formulas in a book somewhere and drop them
into your AGM game using a calculator building block to control it.
Currently the only way to do this is lets say you have a falling object.
You'd have to estimate the weight of the object then tell the caluclator
based on the weight of the object and the current height at which it's
falling based on gravity how long to let it fall using a calculator probably
linked to a timer and another calculator to subtract altitude.

yes I have and it works great. by the way greg, you should give audio game
maker a try www.audiogamemaker.com . then you can make your own audio games.
it's free software and you don't need to know a thing about programming
languages as it's all done through menus and things.

 Hi Nicol,
First, I'd like to point out I have no current plans of reducing health
if you walk into a wall. I for one agree with you that it shouldn't
cause health damage by just merely walking into the wall.
However, Charles's suggestion does make a little more sense in the
context it was given in. Which was if you jump and hit a wall you should
lose health. This makes practical sense since all the walls of the
temple are stone walls, and if someone hit the wall with enough speed
and force it could injure the person possably breaking bones or knocking
 them unconscious.
Same goes if the person is running. If you are running flat out and hit
a stone wall you are going to be really hurting by the time you pick
yourself up off the ground. If you didn't hit your head and knock
 yourself out that is. (Grin)

Hello Greg and welcome on the list.
As Che said in an earlier post, those who haven't played with sound rts
have no idea what they missed. Simply awesome, and this word explains
 everything.
Returning from the hungarian sea, and running through the hundreds of
posts, i see that audio game maker is released. If you're up to some game
creation, it's definitely for you. Just a recommendation until you find an
opponent for your next sound rts multiplayer, smiles.
 All the best,

 Hi guys.
Ok, let's straighten things out here. Who farted was wrongly accused of
being my message. Bearing in mind that more than one person has access
 to
my site, including Tristan, let's say that it was wrong of Tristan to
accuse me of putting that message there.
The message in fact was actually my girlfriend's, her idea of a little
 touch to the site.
Secondly, talking about immaturity is a doddle for this guy, as an
incident occurred last week which put us into a very heated argument,
which involved him stealing and trying to use php scripts that had been
custom written for me, for his own site, when I had clearly told him not
to. It then went from negotiations to trying to crash my eloquence with
the h' words, which may otherwise be written out fully as Here and
Have, along with his best friend Alex.
I therefore, do not want any false accusations made about me and my
people, and I don't want any more complaints of immature behaviour
 from
people that do equally immature things.
To the rest of you, I hope that clarifies why I don't feel Tristan is
serious about his company. He is, after all, 11 years old.

 Damien C. Sadler

 Hi all,
Does anybody know if it's possible to open file attachments that have
been blocked? Thomas sent me a zip of some SFX for my fFrogs and Flies
game but Windows XP won't let me open them. I get this security warning
about how windows blocks certain files that could be harmful to the
computer. It doesn't even tell me if there's a way to open it. This zip
has some rather important files for my game, so any help would be
 appreciated.

 making
such a change would cause a dead list unless there's something I don't

Thank you Che. I'm starting to dread going away on weekends or actually
spend time with my family while I'm not working. This is the third or
fourth time this summer alone that things blow up over immaturity.
People need to start learning how to take things off list. If things
like this keep happening, I'm going to change the list so that by simply
pressing reply, the message goes to the original sender. This way when
heated arguments get started and people just hit reply and type out
their angry thoughts, they go to the list. This will also make it so
people consciously send to the gamers list.
