Hello,

Well, imho, I love the fact that you automaticly run with the arrow keys. I
mean who doesn't run in the game? In side-scrollers, I must say, I always
prefer to run than just normally walk, especially if there is something
like time bonus's or something. I really liked the fact. But of course I
am not everybody...

 Hi Lori,
Well, the reason the health stats are the way thay are is to be more
like mainstream games. You know how in a mainstream game they usually
have a little health bar that shows red if your health is critical,
yellow if it is fair, green if it is good, and blue if it is at full,
 etc?
I decided to emulate that by saying critical, poor, fair, good, etc
rather than just giving you something like 85%. No mainstream game
does that and I don't believe that accessible games need to be that
specific either. For one thing it is down right unrealistic.
For example, let's say you get hurt. Does a doctor walk up to you and
say well, Lori, your health is 85%. No, of course not. He'll tell
you your health is good, fair, poor, whatever in general terms. So
that's my logic for doing it that way.
As for the shift+arrow key combo for run I honestly don't like it, but
I have gotten so many complaints about that I have decided to asign
run to shift+arrow in the next beta. It would appear since company x
does it that way I'm naturally expected to do it that way too. Even
though I'm personally of the opinion it is easier to use run on the
 left and right arrow keys.

 Thanks.

Hi Shaun,
Lol! No, there is no such thing as a 3d side-scroller. You can include
3d graphics and animation, render sounds in 3d, but that in itself
doesn't make it 3d. Side-scrollers are by definition a 2d game where
you start from the leftside of the screen and work your way right to
the rightside of the screen. Ocationally you might have to climb up or
down the y axis, but there is only an x and y axis to the game. If we
added a third axis, z, suddenly you are probably talking about a
third-person game with an x, y, and z axis of movement.

Cheers!

Hi,
Umm...No offense but aren't we getting a bit petty now?
The menu system has been that way, well, since the very beginning and
no one really has any serious complaints about it. Believe me there
are far more pressing bugs like the crash on exit that concern me more
than if the main menu lands on the new game option as soon as you open
that menu. Besides that would require a huge amount of work rewriting
the menu system for a feature that isn't all that necessary in the
grand scheme of things.
Same goes for adding an option to select alternative keyboard
asignments.I don't mind having options to enable/disable joysticks,
turn ambience on/off, and other settings that configure the engine
itself, but I have no plans, nor ever will, adds custom settings on a
per game basis. That would require me to upgrade the engine just to
add a setting that I may or may not ever use again in another game.
That's why the settings I do have apply to every game built with the
engine rather than any specific game.

On 10/5/10, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote:
 so do I.
I did notice when the game starts that the menu is not on anything
till I push a key it probably should be on new or whatever is at the top.
also you could always put in prefs to have shift right run or not and
have the switch if you can do it that way and then those that want
 can select an option, etc.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 for Linux: Initial impressions

2010-10-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Hayden,
Well, as for the keyboard input issue you are talking about I got an
answer back from the developer on that. Appparently rather than using
sf::Window::Event class for handling keyboard input using
sf::Window::Input instead will give me a more DirectInput style
keyboard input system for Mac, Linux, and Windows games. So I'm in the
process of upgrading that now.
As for the extra echo when Angela speaks I've already attended to that
issue. I edited those files and now the echo isn't quite as bad. Now
the echo sounds more normal. Normal as being in an empty tomb or
something with a little echo, but not as much as beta 14.
As for the panning issue see my post on the subject. I don't see any
real solution to the problem, and to fix the problem that would mean
going back to DirectX and basing my engine on old deprecated Windows
libraries which only serves us in the short term. Long term, though,
DirectSound is a thing of the past and we are going to have to accept
that.

Cheers!

Long term, though,
DirectSound is a thing of the past and we are going to have to accept
that.

Cheers!

jump to the center. Also I did notice the enter key problem, and how
sometimes the arrow won't take. Not bad, Thomas, but for those little bugs.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 for Linux: Initial impressions

2010-10-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,
Well, the reason the health stats are the way thay are is to be more
like mainstream games.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 for Linux: Initial impressions

2010-10-05 Thread shaun everiss

well just in case my os was corrupt I tried it on my dad's system.
both of ours are core 2 duo 2ghz cpus though his is 100mhz faster
both of us have simular memmory being 2gb.
both systems have realtech soundcards and intel displays.
I have my grandpa's which is a del with almost the same hardware.
I do have my brother's which is an amd 64 bit but its video card is
on the way out and it ocationally has issues.
When the error happened on my dads, the game stuttered for a bit, or
rather just hung, the hard drive shut down which is unusual, then the
system reset the drive restarted and windows came back.
Interestingly I made some changes to the system, before I played the
game to see if I had to catch something I could.

On restart those changes were reversed.
I don't have any of that sort of software that would do that so I
must assume that that session of the os was corrupted and the system
restarts using its last known good config.
I am gona set my error reports and stuff and then reboot and then see
if I can get anything.
I wander if the linux load sounds issue and the startup issues in
vista are related somehow.
if this does happen again and I can get something then I will try to
get it to you.

What you are suggesting seems to me, although I am not by any means Thomas,
a tad...unnecessary? It's really, not in my opinion anyway, a big deal about
the menus. Also, if you want to walk, just tap the arrow keys individually.
I'd bet many of us find the way it is now invaluable, not to mention the
fact that I, at least, only walk in terms of tapping the arrows if I am near
a trap.

Best Regards,

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 for Linux: Initial impressions

2010-10-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Umm...No offense but aren't we getting a bit petty now?

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Beta 14 for Linux: Initial impressions

2010-10-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
No, I don't think Vista's problem and Linux's problem are in anyway
related. For one thing I started the game from the Windows command
prompt and none of the error messages were present when starting from
the command line. When I start the game from a Linux terminal I get a
number of load errors which are more than likely do to the fact Linux
is extremely case specific. A file called Loop_Statue.wav and
loop_statue.wav are treated differently by the operating system. They
might be spelled the same but the capital l and s makes a huge
difference when programming for Linux. Theremay be some other issue
involved here, but according to the Windows test run all the files
loaded correctly.

Cheers!

it may disrupt any end sequence but if the thing doesn't close then hmmm.
