Re: [Audyssey] Psychostrike error
Hi Shaun, While I tend to agree with you for the most part I do also see why some people are using XP. I recently purchased a used notebook with XP on it for the primary reason there are games and some other programs I have that won't run on Windows 7 or Windows 8. Therefore rather than running a virtual machine I chose to buy and setup a dedicated XP machine for that. So can sympathize to some point with the XP users. Bottom line, though, people who have XP probably don't want to move away from it because they are familiar with the user interface, have programs that aren't compatible with a newer system, and as Dark is often quick to point out there isn't anything in the newer Windows he wants. So refuses to upgrade until there is some personal benefit. The main difference between them and me is they chose to use XP exclusively where I am only using it on a multimedia computer. I'm no longer using XP for the web,e-mail, office, or anything else of that sort. Mainly games, music, movies, etc. I would suggest that those who are adamant about XP do the same, but I also realize it costs money plus a desire to own the new to make that transition. I'm through talking to those people because no amount of words will talk them into upgrading. Cheers! Hi John, You are incorrect. I have a 32 bit Vista computer and the game works perfectly. So it is probably an XP problem. Love the sounds and action but it should be called a side scroller. Re: [Audyssey] Psychostrike error
Hi Stephen, Correct. I at first tried it on XP to get the error that the application isn't a 32-bit application. To test that I installed it on another laptop running a 32-bit version of Windows 7 and got the same error. Conclusion, is that the game was compiled exclusively for 64-bit machines which would explain why it works on my Toshiba with a 64-bit version of Windows 7 but not on the Compaq with the 32-bit version of Windows 7 or the XP laptop. ?Fortunately, this should be easy to fix and only require that the compiler recompile it as a 32-bit application. Am I correct in thinking that, if the game is compiled for 64 bit machines only, the fix would be just a few, if not only one, changes? Hi Dark, Well, as it so happens I have an older XP laptop I just recently refurbished which I can try the game out on. I'll let you and everyone else know my experience when I get a chance to try the game on it. I suspect it has nothing to do with XP but some weird error where the operating system isn't recognizing the program as a 32-bit program for some strange reason. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Psychostrike error
Hello, It is of course possible it isn't an XP issue, but all the scenarios point to it, and what with the general movement being to leave XP behind hitting us this past year, I find it highly likely. The only other thing it could be is a 32 bit issue. I don't think it's a 32 bit application though. Come to think of it, I think one of the testers had a 32 bit windows 7 machine. Still, it looks likely that we will be able to release a patch for the XP users. HI, The first thing you can try is to run the bat file as administrator. Right click on it and select run as administrator. If that does not work. Then read the readme file and it will explain step by step how to manually do what the bat file was supposed to do. Give that a try. If it still fails write back or drop Aprone a message directly. But seeing as he is quite busy you might get an answer here faster. good luck. this stuff needs to be registered, if you get the latest test version, there are a couple install batch scripts in it, you may have to modify them path wise for the standard swamp version but give them to her, one is for 64 bit 1 for 32 bit. what ever system she has just get her to run the right file and aparently it works. There is no setup file. Actually, based on the error message it looks like you're trying to run the game from within the zip. Extract the zip into a folder and you should be all set. There is no need to actually install castaways, but it must be extracted first so that the game can find all of its files. Re: [Audyssey] runtime error
Hi Angela. I wonder if this is the visual basic problem which many people have found trying to play old games while running vista and windows 7. There are several components (noteably the visual basic runtime libraries), that shipped with xp, but not with vista or 7. No need to worry though. Just go to www.kitchinscin.net and download the winkit.exe file. This creates a directory to run all of Jim kitchin's free games, but more than that it installs the components needed to run them, which are also needed to run many other older games too. Often if someone has a problem running an older game on windows vista or 7, just downloading and installing winkit will fix it and this is probably what you should try first. hth. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] runtime error
Hello Angela, That error is caused by a missing Visual Basic 6 activex component or library. I'm, not sure if you are are aware of this about the time Vista was released microsoft dropped support for Visual Basic 6 so Vista and Windows 7 do not come with the required components for games and applications written in VB 6. Sometimes it is hard to figure out which library or component is missing, but most of the time installing Jim Kitchens Winkit setup will resolve most dependency issues for games like that. Re: [Audyssey] runtime error
Hi there Angela, You don't actually have to install the WinKit game if you don't want to, though I hope you do since it is a good game. However, there is WinLife3 which is just as good, also made by Jim Kitchen. There are, in actual fact, two components you need to install. The Visual Basic 6 runtimes and the DirectX libraries for Visual Basic. They are both located on my website. The norm would be to have to take dx8vb.dll from an XP machine and install it to your machine, but since that is a little complicated I have simplified it in all cases. The Visual Basic Runtimes can be found at the following link: http://www.x-sight-interactive.net/xsight/sysreq/vbrun60sp6.exe The DirectX8 module for VB can be found at the following link: http://www.x-sight-interactive.net/xsight/sysreq/dx8vb.exe This is an installer I have made personally to install DX8VB.dll to the correct location and register it with Windows. Having installed those two components, your games should work no problems. Hope this helps. Re: [Audyssey] Jd error on japanese windows
Hi Dark, I don't know what is causing the crash for sure much less a solution, but I can tell you that the ascii character code and the Japanese character set are completely incompatible. That's why computer programmers came up with unicode. Unicode, which is the default character encoding from Windows 2000 onwards, includes not just the standard Western European characters but support for Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, Greek, etc character sets as well. Basically, it is a universal character code that allows you to support any language and system of writing imaginable. The ascii characters are more or less limited to standard English characters such as a through z, 0 through 9, and a few special characters like the pound sign, periods, commas, tabs, spaces, etc. Not enough to support very unusual characters such as Japanese or chinese characters. However, that shouldn't have anything to do with Judgment day crashing. Dark wrote: Hi. We've recently had a question on the audiogames.net forum from a Japanese chap called Yukio who's attempting to run Judgement day on windows 7. Apparently he gets a runtime error 6 overflow message. I suggested he download and install winkit, sinse that installs dependencies and often fixes windows 7 compatibility issues, but apparently this hasn't helpd as yet. I did wonder however if it might also be a language thing, sinse I'm not sure a Japanese version of windows would run standard ascii files the same way as one using the roman alphabet, though whether this has anything to do with errors I don't know, though of course it might be something entirely different. so, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts. Btw, yukio has apparently E-mailed Liam as well. Beware the grue! Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Thomas, The same error occurs with the GMA engine in that it uses the ASCII codes instead of Unicode. The divide by 0 error happens as the math function codes have also changed. Re: [Audyssey] Jd error on japanese windows
Hi Dark, Ummm...that's kind of my point though. There is no such thing as ascii machines running Windows. Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc all use unicode characters not ascii by default. That's part of the reason why programming in Microsoft Visual C++ using the Windows API is such a pain in the tail. You can't use standard ascii character strings, but must wrap the string using an unicode macro that converts the ascii string to unicode before passing it to a function. The SAPI Speak function is a simple case in point. In the old Dos and early Windows days you could use an ascii string constant like const char* message = Hello world!; and pass it to a function. Unfortunately, now that the Windows API is all based on unicode you can't really do that. the ascii string Hello world! has to be converted to an unicode string like LPWCSTR message = TEXT (Hello world!); instead. The TEXT() macro basically takes Hello world! and converts it from ascii to unicode and passes it to a Win API unicode string constant which can then be passed to a function like THE SAPI Speak function as follows. voice-Speak (message, 0, SPSF_Default); So as I said earlier when it comes to Windows programming there is no such thing as an ascii machine. Everything is converted to unicode before it gets passed to the Windows API. That goes for window titles, labels, error messages, whatever. It all gets converted to unicode before it is displayed on screen or gets spoken by SAPI. The major difference between C++ and something like one of the .Net languages in C++ you manually have to do the conversion yourself by passing ascii characters through macros where the .Net Framework does it automatically if you are using C# .Net or Visual Basic .Net. Re: [Audyssey] Jd error on japanese windows
Hi Phil, Hmmm...That does make sense. Part of the problem here is that Visual Basic 6, the language a lot of accessible games are written in, was released in 1998 before the Windows unicode standard was a core part of the Windows operating system and Windows API. Unicode support on Windows really wasn't fully standardized until Windows XP was released in 2001 which obviously made languages like Visual Basic 6 obsolete unless the developer in question intentionally created his or her software using unicode support. Future versions of Visual Basic like Visual Basic .Net, which was released in 2002, resolved a lot of problems inherent in Visual Basic 6 and earlier, but as you can see several game developers here haven't adopted Visual basic .Net and still are using Visual Basic 6 even though it is far passed its prime. Hi Casey, The following line: while (guess =number or = number) is incorrect. I mentioned this in my private reply to you but I don't think I explained it very well. Hmmm. I'm no brilliant programmer and I have not read all of the BGT manual, but I'm not sure you need a loo there either. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Re: [Audyssey] BGT Error: Expected expression value
You do need a loop, if that is what you meant. It loops each time an incorrect guess is made to let you guess again. On 3/28/2010 9:36 PM, Hayden Presley wrote: Hmmm. Re: [Audyssey] another error with the game.
Hi, I can't really help you if I can't see any code. You are getting errors because you're not conforming to the proper syntax, although without the code I've no idea what's going wrong. Granted, I'm not a programmer myself, however I've read quite a bit of code, from various sources in various languages, and can follow it ok. So, the code would be helpful indeed. Re: [Audyssey] another error with the game.
Hi Muhammed, It makes our job much easier if you posted the code along with the error messages. This allows us to explain the problem and help you fix the code. Usually, just posting an error message doesn't give us that much information on your problem. Thanks. -Ryan www.rsgames.co.nr On Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 5:13 PM, Muhammed Deniz muhamme...@googlemail.comwrote: Hi guys, This is another error. The same one is at the very end as this is a long one.
