Re: [Gimp-user] Gimp failing to load custom anything

Have you reviewed your "Folders" configuration in GIMP preferences? Your
files may not be in the folders GIMP is expecting. You could also
customize where GIMP looks for those additional customizations in the
folders section.

Other problems I've encountered include:
* Trying to paint on the wrong layer (sometimes even when the layer is not
visible).
* Trying to paint when quick mask is selected.
* Trying to paint on a layer when a channel has been selected.

You can look up the plug-in path in your own GIMP settings by:

1. Visiting GIMP preferences (I don't know on Mac but on Linux it's Edit >
Preferences).
2. Expanding "Folders" in the menu on the left.
3. Clicking on Plug-Ins

This area will display all of the path locations in which GIMP is searching
for plug-ins.

Hi Paul,
I've fixed the issues you encountered when you first tried to bootstrap.
Here's the detailed changes.

https://github.com/samrocketman/vagrant-gimp/commit/46a563b4d4d69cc3397a811f673146c0d2ffc672

To fix your development environment be sure you're in the vagrant-gimp
working directory (the one you cloned)

   1. git pull origin master
   2. vagrant destroy
   3. vagrant box update
   4. vagrant up

That should correctly bootstrap your environment. For anyone else, refer
to the README at https://github.com/samrocketman/vagrant-gimp

Please let me know how your second experience goes.

It bootstraps a virtualbox virtual machine ready for development. So it is
not replacing your currently running OS but instead starting a
virtualmachine ready to compile GIMP and start developing.

[Gimp-user] Portable development environment for GIMP

2015-09-27 Thread Sam Gleske
Hello devs and users,
I want to lower the barrier of entry of GIMP development for people who
want to contribute to GIMP.

I just made a quick set-up development environment for GIMP. This way new
developers can get their first build of GIMP in minutes (depending on
internet connection) rather than hours of dependency discovery. ***It
takes the pain out of building GIMP for the first time**.*

https://github.com/samrocketman/vagrant-gimp

Instructions:

   1. Install vagrant https://www.vagrantup.com/
   2. Clone: git clone https://github.com/samrocketman/vagrant-gimp
   3. cd vagrant-gimp
   4. vagrant up
   5. Log in with username: vagrant, password: gimp

It will automatically provision Debian Jessie 64-bit, upgrade the OS,
install all GIMP development dependencies, and build GIMP. It builds babl,
gegl, and gimp from the master branch.

After logging in, open a terminal and open the latest development version
of GIMP by typing "gimp-2.9".

All of the GIMP user settings are stored in ~/.config/GIMP/2.9.

Right now only babl, gegl, and gimp are cloned. Some other ideas I have
around this include cloning all of the GIMP project repositories (including
the website, etc.).

Please tell me your thoughts/feedback/ideas.

[Gimp-user] Anyone willing to contribute a Mac build slave?

2015-01-05 Thread Sam Gleske
Hello GIMP users,
Is there anyone willing to host a 24x7 Mac OS X nightly build slave? This
would be added as a build slave to the GIMP Jenkins environment currently
hosted at https://build.gimp.org/.

If you're a willing candidate you would need to donate the Mac, allow it to run
a Jenkins agent 24x7, and provide me remote access to it for administration. I
will, for the most part, set up all of the prerequisites (so long as I can set
them up via ssh) and do all of the configuring in the build server. I would
also provide ongoing maintenance of the system.

Please let me know,
Sam Gleske

Typically layers are used for this. You use the text tool and one layer is
just for text. You also have a background layer in which you can change
the color. Are you familiar with layers? If not, check out this
documentation.

Re: [Gimp-user] FAQ: Does the GIMP license permit to do x?

2014-06-16 Thread Sam Gleske
Also FWIW,
I just spent the last few minutes (maybe 5-10 mins) looking for the GIMP
software license (while pretending I did not know that it was located with
the source code). There needs to be a Legal link on the front page (either
in the main menu or at the bottom of the page in the footer menu) where
links to all associated licenses can be found in one place.

The links could include:
wgo website source license
GNU Free Documentation License for the Documentation
GNU GPLv3 for GIMP software itself.

Additionally the FSF provides a handy little quick guide to the GPLv3 [1].

I think we should make finding the licenses on the website easier for those
who are interested. It is essentially a central page to find all things
legal related to GIMP. Perhaps, on the hypothetical "Legal" page when
there's a link to the GPLv3 also provide a link to the GPLv3 quick guide
[1] to ease its consumption.

The point was the license is covered in legalese. There's nothing wrong
with humanizing in layman's terms and stating that in terms of
contradiction the actual license take precedence. Look at creative
commons. They break out a few key points of their licenses and then link
to the full license for legal consumption.

It's also better to keep a larger image but modify the dots per inch to
adjust the print size so that a more crisp image is printed at the size you
require.

e.g. you have 3000x2250 px image and you wanted to print a 9x5" photo it
would be better to keep the image the same size and set the DPI to 3000/9 =
333.33 DPI but you would need to calculate and crop the height. If you
have 2250/333.33DPI = 6.75". Since that is the case then you should crop
your image and make the height 5*333.33 px = 1666.66px.

As a summary if I wanted to print my large image to a 9x5" printed photo
I'd have to crop it to 3000x1666px and set the print to 333 DPI (dots per
inch) give or take some minor percent error.

I wonder if it would be good creating a highlights page for publishers.
Sort of like a faq addressing common concerns. e.g.

Can GIMP be freely distributed on physical media (CD, DVD, Magazine) or
digital media (download from a third party website)? Yes

Can GIMP be modified and freely distributed? Yes but it is recommended
(not required) to change the branding in cases of heavy modification so
that the GIMP brand is not affected by usage of your modified version.

Can GIMP be used for commercial purposes? Yes

Can works created in GIMP be sold? Yes. Works created in GIMP are entirely
owned by the creator of the work to do whatever they wish.

Can the GIMP logo be used as part of my event XYZ? Yes/No? Just coming up
with another question at this point.

For more details about the rights provided to you by using GIMP see the
[GNU General Public License version 3][license]

[license]: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/plain/COPYING

The idea is you extract all of the legalese out of the conversation and
filter it down to what people care about. By people I mean those who are
considering to use GIMP for whatever purpose.

1. Click on start, in the start search menu type "run" without quotes.
2. With the Run dialog open type in "%TMP%" and press enter (without
quotes).
3. You should now be in the folder Partha described and there should be a

If that's the case I think you should discuss it with gimp-developer
list. If there truly are programs "phoning home" in the plugins I don't
believe that is either necessary nor a desired behaviour. Even if is what
is intended it should not bring down the whole program so I would consider
that a bug.

GIMP was designed with image manipulation in mind. So in short, yes you
can do this. Without some sample images it's a little hard to explain
how. But essentially you should start small by trying to do some
tutorials. As you learn about the different tools in GIMP's toolset you'll
soon be able to accomplish what you wish on your own.

A quick google search for "gimp tutorials" comes up with some useful
results.

I agree with this sentiment about asking to save too often. Though I do
like the new export feature when I'm not working with XCF it is a bit of an
annoyance.

I was thinking about this as well. I think it would be a nice preference
to have. It wouldn't change the UI but would modify the repetitive "save
your work" routine. I've actually accidentally closed unsaved changes on
that for minor tweaks. While it's no big deal because it was an easily
repeatable action it's still something I had to take the time to do over
again and disrupts my workflow in that specific scenario.

Hi Alyn,
It is not customary to publish your email address in the mailing list

I'm not insisting on changing anything in GIMP. Reread what I said. My

I merely asked if one of the reasons for the creation of GEGL was to
abstract graphical manipulation functions out of the GUI into a library.
If that was the case would creating a different GUI on top of it feasible
for getting similar quality of image manipulation?

Right, it has features. Being that it's a library is it not to provide
some abstraction and help simplify the implementation? As it is in a
library, writing another GUI on top of it would be possible and
considerably easier than previous iterations of GIMP. The user interaction
would change but not the features provided.

Apple will unofficially allow it but as soon as much as a single

from app store).

GIMP is 90% GUI code and "porting" that would be a complete rewrite.

Isn't the purpose of GEGL integration attempting to pull as much of the
graphical functions out of GIMP as possible so that GUI could be switched
but the underlying library has the same quality of image manipulation?

If that's not the case what is the point of GEGL?

Being misinformed does *not* qualify as trolling. The way Owen came out

fuss). I wasn't even involved in the discussion until now and I got pissed
when I read his comments. I think the list can do better than that. I
don't want our list to end up like the Linux kernel ML where if strict
rules aren't followed newcomers are harassed to no end. It's very counter
productive and a lot of times why I categorically leave communities.

Also to pipe in my 2 cents. I checked the site in a mobile browser. I
understand it's completely new and totally alpha code. That being said: I
don't think it's useful for the Download link to show up in the mobile
interface. Something to think about. I'm not sure how I'd handle that
(maybe with JavaScript but that's still not desirable). UserAgents can
easily be parsed on the server side but it sounds like static flat files
generated is favored over server side execution for serving html.

I really like Elle's comments on accessibility. Just some thoughts and

To add on to my previous statements I'd like the front page to be edited a
bit more. I'll quote the previous text and then follow that with what I
would like to see it say. Note:

> *Professional Level Photo Filters*

- Suggested Changes

*Professional Photo Filters*
Make your photos picture perfect with professional-grade color filtering.

*Draft with the Tools of the Trade*
GIMP has a robust set of tools and can be easily extended through add-ons.

- Notes

On the second sentence of the first line I correct your misspelling of
"prefessional."

Avoid the word 'comes' as it implies humans traveling (to come and go).
Again emphasize that GIMP brings a lot to the table. Having a robust set
of tools is good for both users and professionals a-like. Easily extending
functionality through add-ons caters to real power users of the tool.

I try to think of the psychology behind the advertising since the first
page is something everybody sees I think this redesign will ultimately make
GIMP more popular. Especially with high bit depth editing coming to the
table in future versions (which I look forward to!).

Thanks for taking the time Kasim to put a lot of thought into your design
and asking for feedback.

I don't think it's that big of an issue. We live in an age of high
resolution monitors. Higher resolution images would be good to take
advantage of that.  Personally I like the current site design (on gimp.org);
primarily because I enjoy reading the GIMP news as soon as I get to the
site (which I avidly check even though it's not updated very often). For
me it just means more clicks to get to news. I guess I'll just depend on
my RSS feed as it's not that big of a deal.

However I like how Kasim emphasizes features on the front page which
beckons users to try it out. The only thing I would like to see changed is
the text, "Play with the Tools of the Trade." I don't like that because it
implies that there is no need to take GIMP seriously as a professional
editing tool or that it's a free trial to "play" with before using the real
thing. I'm tired of hearing people say GIMP isn't as good as Photoshop.
They just haven't used GIMP enough. You need to unlearn Photoshop to
really take advantage of GIMP. I think GIMP is already ready for the prime
time just industry doesn't take the time to learn a new tool. I would like
to suggest you changing that text to, "Draft with the Tools of the Trade."
This let's users know that it's there for the taking yet allows
professionals to take it seriously as a tool to get work done.

If we're really going forward with this redesign thanks for considering any
of my thoughts.

Re: [Gimp-user] Gimp App for Android and IOS!

2013-03-07 Thread Sam Gleske
Apple's App Store license is incompatible with the GNU GPL (all versions).
Apple would allow the license conflict but a contributor could contest it
and it would be pulled from the app store (much like what happened to VLC
for iPhone). For now a great graphics program in the App store is Art
Studio for iPad . I've got that
one and found it very easy to use knowing how to use Gimp.

Other than that, I doubt Gimp will ever come to the iOS App Store unless
Apple modifies it's terms to be GNU GPL friendly. Email Apple about it
with the request.

I verified the change. It's committed to the website.
