Re: [JAWS-Users] questions about JAWS and Windows 7
Jim, Thanks for your response about the JAWS settings. The reason I'm asking so specifically about individual programs is that my son will essentially be putting together this PC from a kit so it will not have the usual bloatware, which means that we are trying to remember what we need to bring it up to speed. For example, it's my understanding that Windows 7 will include Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. Since I'll likely have to download some things once I'm up and running, I obviously need a web browser to do this and wanted to be sure I didn't have to jump through a lot of hoops to get it. As to the email client to use, I've tried both Outlook and Windows Live Mail ever so briefly but not long enough to feel comfortable with either one. I will be getting JAWS 12 next week and will have a few weeks to play with it before purchasing and setting up the new PC, so maybe it is time to revisit outlook. Again, I really appreciate your thoughts on all this and will probably have more specific questions as I get further into this. In particular the Google Reader page. I wanted to share what I'm experiencing and see if it may just be an issue with my machine or if others are dealing with the same problems. I have Google Reader as one of my homepages and when I launch Firefox, Jaws always behaves as though the virtual cursor is turned off. In fact, Jaws will say Application Mode On. In order to get Jaws to work properly, I have to do an insert+z keystroke command and then Jaws will say Application Mode off. I'll then be able to go around the page with no problems. This particular issue only started when upgrading the Firefox 4.0 and is still present with the latest Firefox 4.0.1 update. If while in Firefox and I go back to my Google Reader page, either by clicking on the Reader link from another Google site or through my saved bookmark at least 70% of the time, the Application Mode On issue comes up. I have noticed a marked increase of instances of Mozilla crashing with this latest Jaws release as well. Again, it happns most often while on the Google Reader page and while in Firefox in general. Either when I go to the Google Reader page, close a link that I had opened from Google Reader or simply by just having the page open or refreshing the page with the insert+escape key command. Upwards of 10 times a day. It would happen every now and then with the earlier versions of Jaws 12, but it has become a constant with the latest JFW rlease. I at first thought it was an issue with Firefox or perhaps a rogue add-on, but I have tried disabling add-ons and plug-ins and Firefox was still crashing left and right. When I use an older version of Jaws (11.0) however, Firefox not only never crashes, but the over all responsiveness of the browser and JFW feel over all snappier and better. With JFW 12, using the browser had become painfully slow either through regular navigating from page to page as well as when trying to refresh a page. Seconds would go by before Jaws would be able to speak. Not to mention the crashing problem. Jaws would outright crash much more frequently too. I don't experience the browser crashing issue in IE8, but the over all sluggishness with JFW 12 is present along with using other applications. I at first thought that I had been infected with a virus or other malware, but with the older version of 11.0, my computer is much, much more responsive. I do however experience the Application Mode On issue with JFW 11.0 as well. So maybe it's a Firefox 4.0 thing in regards to this. There are a couple of other problems, but the ones above are what are giving me the most problems. Is anyone else experiencing any of these problems or have any ideas on what may be causing it? Like I said, when using JFW 11.0, a lot of what I mentioned above doesn't happen. All my antivirus and malware stuff is up to date. I was going to shoot an email off to Freedom Scientific, but wanted to get feedback from other Jaws users as well. Re: [JAWS-Users] questions about JAWS and Windows 7
Ah. Don't believe everything you read. Office 2007 works fine with either Jaws 11 or 12 on a Win 7 machine. The Office 2010 programs that you install also should work, but the basic version of Office 2010 that you get with every Win 7 pc won't work very well because it is an ad-based free version that uses a web browser, so Jaws can't script it. - Original Message - From: Jorge Paez computertechjorgep...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2011 7:51 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] questions about JAWS and Windows 7 Office 2010. 20007 I found a bit buggy with JFW 11. Re: [JAWS-Users] Major JFW 12 problems with Firefox
hi Bob, yes firefox 4 is not really supported by Jaws 12 yet, however I can use it quite well. For Example, when I am doing a google search on something, I can hit h for the headings till I find my desired search results. After I'm finished with the page that I have viewed, I have to hit the backspace to go back to the search result pages. However, I noticed that if you were to hit the backspace key, or alt left arrow to go back a page, you have to hit f5 so that Jaws will refresh the page, then you can move on to the next search result. But I haven't found any real problems with firefox 4 with Jaws, at least on my laptop. - Original Message - From: Bob t...@squashyware.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, May 20, 2011 7:55 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major JFW 12 problems with Firefox Firefox 4 is still unsupported by Jaws. http://www.sightandsound.co.uk/?p=1006 On 20/05/2011 15:39, Shane Hecker wrote: I haven't tried this with Firefox, but I have the application mode thing come up as well. Like I said, when using JFW

hi Susan, if you liked outlook express back in the earlier days of windows, I believe you can download windows mail for windows 7. I believe you can do a google search for windows mail download and you should be able to get windows mail. Windows mail will still work in windows 7, according to some people on the internet. It's pretty much like outlook express. And yes it is too bad that windows 7 doesn't ave an email program with it. But for those who doesn't like windows live mail, you can do a google search for windows mail download. You can only use Windows Mail in Windows 7 by doing a registry hack. Details are up on the jaws-users website. [JAWS-Users] Spell Checker in Outlook Express is acting really weird since instalation of Office 2007
Dear Friends, My Spell Checker in Outlook Express is acting really weird after I installed Office 2007 It wants to capitalize each word, and some words that are perfectly correct it wants to change, for example why it wants to change to wh! I think I remember seeing something regarding this about a year or so ago, but I am not sure. Any one remember that thread, and what was the final conclusion? The Spell checker is working fine in Word, and set to automatic. But is completely useless in Outlook Express. I am using XP-Home, and JAWS 11, and now have Office 2007 installed. Hi Alan; It sounds like you might need to change the language in OE options. Do the following to see if this helps. 1. While in Outlook Express press control, shift, + O, to open the OE options. 2. Control + tab to the spelling page / tab. 3. tab to the language combo box, it's around 6 tabs. Arrow up or down until English, United States, is highlighted. Now, tab to apply, press spacebar, tab to okay, press enter. Hope this helps. Take care. Hi Susan. About the E-mail client, i can tell you, that i have Used Windows Live Mail both on a 32 bit Windows 7 laptop computer, and on a 64 bit Windows 7 desktop computer. There are some diffaculties reading e-mails, send by som e-mail client's, and therefor i have left the reading phane visible, so when a hit on the enter key was whithout any result, than i escaped back to the inbox, and tab'ed into the reading phane, and here i always get result. There is a security risc by having the reading phane visible, because the letter changes from unread to read, after highlighting in 5 second's, but this can be changed in the options menu, so it is possible to hear whom the mail is from and the subject, and getting it deleted, before the letter changes to read, and if it should contain a dangerous virus, that automatically would start working, not will be any risc for you, because you have had the time to permanently delete it before. Just change the time from 5 second's to 60 second's, so you have time enough to do your task. I don't hope that i have scared you by this last information, but we are living in a riscful world. Steve and All, Thanks for all the helpful comments on Windows live Mail. I actually have it loaded onto this machine but have not gotten very far with it. I assume that I installed or configured it incorrectly since OE attempts to come up whenever I've gone into Windows Live, so I've decided to give it up until I get the new PC. It seems to be causing some folks a lot of grief but hopefully I will get past all that. Steve, What do you mean by the basic office program that you get with Windows? What exactly does it include? i assume this is another of Microsoft's efforts to help us do our computing tasks well? Anyway, I'm not sure what George meant about Office 2007 being buggy with JAWS 11 but imagine it has to do with the ribbon interface, which hopefully JAWS 12 will make easier. My husband is already using Office 2007 so I will hopefully be able to install a copy on his license. I feel i'm going to have a lot to learn at one time and it's hard to anticipate how difficult it will be from other people's reports of problems. Oh well, one day at a time I guess. I've been anticipating this transition for about a year and have finally decided to take the plunge now that I have the money saved rather than wait for this PC to die completely. 8.0 to 12.0 and assume that I will need to do the authorization prior to a clean install, right? I will not have access to the classic startup or whatever it's called since I am only getting the Home premium version, but are there any configuration changes I should make so that JAWS and Windows will play well together? Also, does the Windows setup include some version of IE or do I have to get this elsewhere, and if so what steps are involved? I also need to decide whether to go with internet Explorer 8 or 9 and office 2007 or 2010 and would like opinions on which email clients people favor, keeping in mind that I'm used to Outlook Express and have had no real chance to work with Windows Mail or Thunderbird and am somewhat leaning away from Outlook. [JAWS-Users] re-questions about JAWS and Windows 7
Hi Susan, I just purchased a HP desktop with a windows seven home premium 64 bit operating system. I am using the latest jaws 12, I like the windows live mail, it works well with jaws. I am training a friend by phone on outlook, my personal opinion is that outlook is more confusing then windows live mail. I did have a little trouble installing jaws on this computer, I think it was because of the antivirus program that came with it. Every thing now, seems to be working fast and quick. I originally bought my computer at staples, but their tech. messed up something and after 10 days of nothing but trouble I returned it to the store. I went to Best buy instead and they were great. Re: [JAWS-Users] questions about JAWS and Windows 7
Hi Susan: Just wondering, how can/where do you get the kit to make a PC? On May 20, 2011, at 10:06 AM, susan wojtecki wrote: Jim, Thanks for your response about the JAWS settings. Re: [JAWS-Users] Converting Web Page Content to Excel
Hello Bill, Try changing your virtual cursor options for copying text in the Adjust JAWS options. After selecting the table with f8, use JAWS key V, press the letter V, and use down arrow to the select and copy choice. Press spacebar until the option for full content using on screen highlight is selected. Press enter key to save the change. Copy the table and then paste it in Excel. The column headings should be maintained and JAWS will speak all content of each cell as you navigate to it, but column widths and row heights will have to be adjusted. I hope this works for you. , Take care. Is there a way to have multiple columns filled with data, and maintain the column headings? For example, One web page table I am trying to convert to Excel has 4 columns and 80 rows. The column headings are in row 1. Is it possible to maintain the table structure after it is copied to Excel? Thank you for your assistance. However, I just tried it without changing the document presentation to screen layout, and after pasting, the result when using the simple layout was the same as when using screen layout. Take care. I usually change verbosity when I encounter a table on web because I find it easier to read. The following works for me, but you will have to try it with Excel 2007 and IE 8 to see if it works for you. 1. Go to the line of text above the HTML data table where JAWS tells you how many rows and columns are in the table. 2. Press JAWS key with V. 3. Press D until you hear the document presentation menu item. 4. Press spacebar until you hear screen layout. 5. Press enter key. 6. Press f8 to select the table. 7. Press CTRL C to copy the selected data to the clipboard. 8. Open Excel. 9. Paste the data. JAWS will read the content of each cell, but you will need to adjust such things as column widths and row heights. Take care.
