I'm seeking input regarding a recurring problem that I'm experiencing when Windows 10 updates have taken place. Whenever there has been a Windows 10 update, JAWS does not speak at the logon screen. I cannot tell when the logon screen appears and when it is ready to receive my Windows password. I cannot tell if anything is happening if I do enter something and try to TAB to the OK button. Needless to say, this makes logging on to my PC impossible at these times without sighted assistance. My husband who is sighted has helped me deal wit this. We have called the Microsoft Accessible Help line. They said that somehow JAWS gets corrupted when there are Windows 10 updates, and that we should uninstall and reinstall JAWS making sure to set JAWS to speak at the logon screen. Doing those things solves the problem until another Windows 10 update occurs. There was a Windows 10 update recently. We will need to go through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS for the thirdtime. I'm wondering if others among you have experienced these difficulties. I'm also wondering if there is a newer version of JAWS that does not have this problem with Windows 10 updates. Re: [JAWS-Users] Recurring problem: JAWS not speaking at logon screen after Windows 10 updates
Hi Annette, You're not losing your mind. The logon process is really problematic with Windows 10 and JAWS. I've had issues with it right from my first Windows 10 and all releases of JAWS 18 and now 2018. I mentioned it to an FS techie when I called about another problem and his response was, "yah, It's really flakey". I've read of so many problems with JAWS 2018 that I'm hesitant to upgrade to it at this point. Hello, After installing JAWS Version 2018 (build 1710.33 ILM) BETA, I just updated to Windows 10 Home Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.19). After doing the Windows update, I went into Outlook 2016 and checked for updates and updated to Microsoft Office 365 Version 1709 (Build 8528.2139 Click-to-Run). The auto-complete in the address fields problem is back. It looks like the fix that was put in to J18.0.4350 didnt get into this current release of 2018. I'll complete the beta error reporting form. Hello, I spent quite a while on the phone with a member of the JAWS Tech Support escalation team this morning. He indicated that a number of users have reported this issue. He could not replicate the problem on his systems and wanted to see exactly what is going on on mine. He recognized the problem and was completely baffled as to what could be causing it. I guess the message here is that JAWS Tech Support is aware of the issue and are trying to determine the cause. So, stay tuned. [JAWS-Users] OverlayWindow0 On Top
Hello, With Windows Version 10.0.14393, when I hit Insert+F10 to show "window list", I am now seeing this "OverlayWindow0 On Top" that I've never seen before. I have seen it just after boot up, after loading Outlook and at other random times. When I hit Enter to open it and hit Insert+Q twice quickly, it tells me "JAWS for Windows settings are used in the jfw.exe application. The configuration name is JAWS Window. The current scheme is Classic." When I hit Insert+F1, I get "JAWS may not recognize this control. To show JAWS what type of control it is, press Insert+7. To see more technical information on the control, press Control+Insert+F1." When I hit Control+Insert+F1, I get, "Window Technical Information: Control ID 0 Class OverlayWindowClass_F7A740FA-AB45-4F46-BB58-3DCEDB196F1C Handle 983746". So, it shows the Control Id, Class and Handle. Try saying that Class real fast. Bet you can't. When I use Alt+Tab to cycle through my open programs, I don't land on this Overlay Window; even when I've opened it from the window list. Do any of you JAWS experts have an explanation for this Overlay window? Thanks, Reed For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hi Adam, Just a couple things... In Excel, you can hit F7 to spell check. In JAWS, you can hit JAWSKey+NumPad5 to hear an individual word spelled. You can use JAWSKey+NumPad2 to hear sentences spelled. In Excel, I quite often use the JAWSKey+NumPad2 to hear the contents of a cell spelled. Re: [JAWS-Users] text as an image
Once the OCR is finished, you are placed in the virtual window where you can select parts or the entire text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into another application's editor window. After pasting, you'll have to take care of formatting. Reed -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. Sent: March 11, 2017 3:46 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] text as an image Hi Wayne, Yes, pressing the letter, D, wil OCR a PDF document, but I've never tried saving 1 in a different format, so someone else will have to verify that. For those that would like to know more about OCR & Layered Keystrokes read below. here's the information from the jaws help. Convenient OCR Frequently, you will encounter images that contain textual information. These can include a PDF file, the setup screen of an application, or the menu of selections for a DVD movie. While these images contain text that is readable by a sighted person, JAWS is unable to read the text as it is part of the image. The Convenient OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature enables you to access any image on the screen that includes text, or recognize all of the text in a PDF document. With just a few simple keystrokes, JAWS will recognize the image in a matter of seconds and activate the JAWS cursor so you can navigate the resulting text. The recognized text will be in the same location as the actual image on the screen. In order to differentiate the recognized text from other text that may be in the window, JAWS will use a different voice when it encounters the recognized text. When you activate the PC cursor, or switch to another application or dialog box, the text is removed and you will need to perform the OCR again. If you open a PDF document and there is no text available to read, you can perform a keystroke that will recognize the entire document and place the resulting text into the Results Viewer for reading. You can then use standard reading commands to review the text or select and copy sections of content for pasting in other applications. To use Convenient OCR, the following layered keystrokes are available: INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D. Recognizes the currently open PDF document. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W. Recognizes the current application window that has focus. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, S. Recognizes the entire screen. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, C. Recognizes the currently selected control, such as a graphical button. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, Q. Cancels recognition while it is in progress. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, QUESTION MARK. Speaks a brief help message describing the commands in the OCR layer. The following examples illustrate just some of the uses of this feature. You insert a DVD movie into your computer which brings up a menu allowing you to select from various DVD features. You press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W and after a few seconds, JAWS will alert you that OCR is complete. At this point, the JAWS cursor will be active and you can navigate around the screen using the ARROW keys and read the text of the menu. When you hear the option you want, press NUMPAD SLASH to perform a left-mouse-click, or INSERT+NUMPAD PLUS to route PC to JAWS to activate the option. Prior to JAWS 13, this menu would have been completely inaccessible. Note: Depending on the type of screen the DVD displays and the quality of the text, the Convenient OCR may not always work. Some DVD screens will be recognized better than others. You open a PDF in Adobe Reader which turns out to be inaccessible. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D to have JAWS begin recognizing the entire document. After several seconds, the contents of the PDF file are displayed in the Results Viewer for reading. Use standard reading commands to review the text or select and copy sections of content for pasting in other applications. For example, you could select all, then copy and paste into a Microsoft Word document, which you could then save. Note: The OCR process takes longer for larger PDF files. As text is recognized, it is added to the end of the existing text already in the Results Viewer. This allows you to continue reading without interruption as the document is processed. If you are currently not reading using Say All, JAWS announces the current line as new text is added to the Results Viewer to indicate that OCR is still in progress. Note: If the PDF document requires a password, you will be prompted to enter it when you first press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D. You must enter the correct password before the OCR process will continue. You try to install or use an application whose interface is not accessible, such as AcronisR True ImageT Home 2011 or 2012. If no text is readily available when pressing TAB or when using the JAWS Cursor, you can try Convenient OCR. Start with the PC Cursor and press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W to recognize the text of the welcome screen graphic. You can then use the JAWS Cu
Re: [JAWS-Users] Interference by letter G
Hi Judy, Laptop keyboards most often include an FN key. A possibility might be that your FN+g key is defined to do something and you are occasionally accidentally hitting the FN key instead of the Shift key which might be next to it. Or, you might be hitting the Control+G keys rather than the Shift+G key. This thought comes from one who sometimes has fingers who think they have a mind of their own. You said that this doesn't always happen. Try to note in which situations it does happen. Does this always happen in specific applications like Outlook, Word etc.? Could your "G" key have been redefined as a shortcut for something. Have you tried running with the default JAWS option? You could hit Insert-Spacebar followed by z. This will remove any JAWS user keyboard definitions, scripts etc. from the mix. See if your problem goes away. Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing default startup folder in MS Outlook
Hi Dave, I'm using Outlook 2016. I have 6 e-mail accounts set up in Outlook. 3 of them are Gmail accounts. All 6 of them show up in my selection dialog. When I go into the dialog, I used the left-arrow key to completely collapse my first default account. This helps to remove a lot of folders from the view and helped to see the other accounts. I used a Google search to learn how to do this and did see instructions for Outlook 2007. I'm not sure why your Gmail account wouldn't be there. Good luck with it. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Not Starting At The Windows Log-in Screen, A Possible Fix
This doesn't work with Windows 10. In 10, when you get to that StartUp tab, you have to click on a link that takes you to Task Manager. In my 10, the items in the StartUp tab seem to be sorted by name; not the order of running. Also in my 10, I have an Enable/Disable button as opposed to a check/uncheck items. So, I'd have to do more research to determine the order in which the programs are loaded and how to change this order. I've done a Google search and can't find anything that tells me how to do it easily. Reed -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. I looked in, msconfig, & found that JAWS Freedom Scientific wasn't at the top of the list on the Start-up Page / Tab, so this is what I did. 1. Press, Windows key + R, to open the run dialog. 2. Type, *msconfig*, without the stars, & press enter. 3. Press, control + tab, until you get to the, Start-up Page / Tab. 4. Pay close attention to what you uncheck because you are going to recheck these items / programs shortly. 5. Tab to the, Okay, button, press the spacebar, & tab 1 time to, Restart, & press enter to restart your computer. 6. Once your computer is booted up repeat steps 1 thru 3, & you will notice that JAWS Freedom Scientific is now at the top of the list. 7. Now, arrow down the list of items / programs on the Start-up Page / Tab, check the items / programs that you unchecked previously, & repeat step #5. Now Jaws should start on the Windows log-in screen when your computer starts. Insert is FN-Key + End. So, with JAWS, you have to use the Laptop keyboard layout and perhaps redefine some key assignments. Hey Jim, Why does your method work more consistently? This isn't a criticism but a curiosity. Where would your method work when the shortcut key method wouldn't and vice versa? Reed -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jim Sent: December 16, 2016 11:04 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Starting Jaws and switching Jaws versions on your W-10computer Hi Jaws users list. A tip for starting, and switching versions of Jaws on your W-10 computer. In my experience with W-10. I like to pin my Jaws icon to the taskbar. For example, my Jaws 18 is the second item on my taskbar, so pressing Windows key+2, will start Jaws 18 on my computer. In my opinion, this is a better way to start Jaws. I think it works more consistently than a standard Jaws keystroke like control+ALT+j. How to pin Jaws to the taskbar. Press the windows key, or press enter on the start button. Tab two times, to the apps view list box. Now just press the letter J, until you get to the Jaws version you wish to pin to the taskbar. For example Jaws 18. You will here, Jaws 18 collapsed, press enter to expand. You should hear, Jaws 18. Make sure that Jaws 18 is highlighted. Press the applications key, go down to, more submenu, right arrow one time, press enter on pin to taskbar. You are now done. Now press windows key+m, go to desktop. Tab twice to the taskbar, or just press windows key+t, this lands you on the first item pinned to the taskbar. Press the right arrow key, and count the number of icons on your taskbar, until you come to Jaws 18. Again, Jaws 18 is the second item on my taskbar, to start Jaws 18 on my computer, just press windows key+2. This is a much smoother way, of starting Jaws on your W-10 computer. Now Jaws 16 is the eighth item on my taskbar, so I press windows key+8, to start Jaws 16. So this is a great and easy way of switching from one version of Jaws to another. I hope you all of enjoyed this tip about starting Jaws on your W-10 computer. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a happy new Year! P.S. My three month cancer check-up was free of any new bladder tumors. Praise the LORD! Thanks for praying! Time for more coffee! Smiles. Re: [JAWS-Users] Another Excel question
Hi Adam, An other way to select your data is to use the Go To command. Hit control-G. In the edit box that appears, type the first cell and last cell you want to select with a : between. For example, If you want to select from cell A3 to A99, you would type A3:A99. If you want to select A3 to U3 you would type A3:U3. So, in your case, I suspect you have column headings that go over more than 1 column. So, you have merged, for example A1 through C1. If you only want to copy the data in column B, you could select B2:b99. You could then copy to the clipboard and paste into your second spreadsheet. Before you do your paste, you should select the area into which you want to paste the data. The receiving area has to be the same size as the data you are pasting. In this case, you could select A2:A99 in your second sheet and do your paste. When you are googling, try to think of the most basic things you want to do. Here, you have to start by selecting your data to copy. So, search for example "excel 2016 selecting data". I guess I'm lucky in that my current Windows 7 laptop has an insert key directly to the left of the delete key on the righthand side of the top row of keys. So, hitting this key, in combination with the letter T. is a very easy way for me to get my status bar. Anyway, I just thought I'd throw the suggestion out there since it may be workable for some others with similar laptop keyboard configurations. FS's Dennis Godin has solved the problem, and I think it's worth posting the solution. Some time ago, the federal government issued a warning about security lapses in Java, and I removed it from my system. Today, Dennis godin encouraged me to reinstall it. A quick Google check assured me that the security problems have been fixed, so I went ahead. One nice thing for those of us who tied ourselves in knots installing and activating early versions of Java Access Bridge, which screenreaders need, is that JAB is now incorporated into Java. You still have to change a setting in the Ease of Access Center, but it's a simple task. Between Java and the JAWS insert-escape refresh command, I can now access the webpage that annoyed me for a month. Below I'm copying the link to the Java download page and the link to FS's Java and JAB installation instructions. Note that when downloading Java, you're encouraged to accept an Amazon and other features that I, for one, don't want cluttering my system, so be sure to tab through each option as you go through the installation process. Also, as frequently mentioned on this list, I suggest saving the file and running it from your system instead of running it from the website. Re: [JAWS-Users] f11 on internet explorer
We of course don't know everything you have tried. So we might suggest something you have tried. You could try Alt+v (for view) and arrow around to see if you can find something to change your window size. You could also try hitting the Applications key and have a look at its menu. Using the mouse, you can quite often drag the corner of the window to make it larger or smaller. It really depends on the application that has been invoked to watch your video. You could also ask your daughter what she did with the mouse. JAWS will only read a portion of my formula from the beginning to some place in the middle. The formula is 179 characters plus 6 spaces. It used to be that if I used various navigational commands inside the cell, I could evidentially read the formula. Now with JAWS17, It is just not happening. . When setting up a custom sort I cannot get JAWS to read the contents of the various drop down lists. It used to be that if I opened the list, arrowed to where I thought the criteria was that I wanted, tab away from the drop down list and then back to it, when I opened it the second time I could hear what I has selected previously. If it was not what I wanted I would repeat my game of roulette until I landed on my desired choice. Now if I manage to get JAWS to read something, it continues to read some random value from the list. Is anyone else having these issues? Does anyone have any ideas for work arounds? I have it plugged into a splitter on the phone jack and my Book port Plus and use it in the same way I would when recording anything else. Hello, This is caused by a bad update from Windows Update. See this news article which points to instructions about how to fix it. http://www.infoworld.com/article/3013219/microsoft-windows/microsoft-pulls-b otched-patch-kb-3114409-that-triggered-problems-with-outlook-2010.html The article says, Microsoft's Patch Tuesday update KB 3114409, intended to help admins keep Outlook 2010 from starting in safe mode, has in fact done just the opposite. Many Outlook 2010 customers report that installing KB 3114409 forces Outlook to start in safe mode. As of early Wednesday morning, the patch has been pulled, but if you're experiencing odd problems with Outlook 2010 -- it opens in safe mode only (always opens maximized and has no sounds, no reading pane, or other view settings that stick), has broken templates, and much more -- you should look at the KB 3114409 article So, you have to uninstall this update. I once used this to change my keyboard to a Swedish keyboard, allowing use of the three diacritical letters in their alphabet. I also believe that you can change your Windows native language in a similar manner. So this may not be a JAWS issue, but may be something you inadvertently set up in your Windows settings. I have tried most of them for my language, US English, and in certain circumstances they work great, for everyday use, Eloquence is still my favorite, it reads punctuation I wish, raises and lowers pitch for capitalization and after 17 years of using JAWS the cadence is something I have gotten used to hearing. I have used other voices but I go back to Eloquence and probably will do so until it disappears from the program. I hated Tom years ago, Samantha is horrible, some of the others also sound like smokers, or Grandpa in Eloquence. I use Paul from Voice ware in another screen reader and he is fine except for some mispronunciations on some words. I used Paul then I had K1000 but it never worked right with Windows 7, the voices in Open Book drive me crazy after reading with hem for an hour or more. However, Eloquence in Open Book also drives me crazy if I have to read for more than a few minutes, the cadence is not the same as with JAWS, the phrasing is off, pitch seems less stable,. I used it to read a PDF converted for a church project, 288 pages more or less and I was amused by how it pronounced bible names, annoyed by the constant higher pitch for some items, have no clue why it could change pitch in the middle of a sentence, found it very distracting to be frank. With each chapter of the book taking approximately an hour to read at a high rate of speed, I wanted to scream by the time I was finished. Unfortunately, I thought that since I had premium voices from Jaws 16, that I could remove the ones Open Book used, discovered that is not the case, but I don't think I would have been any more please by Tom or Samantha which as I recall were to two main OB choices, since the program has not been updated since about 2012, I doubt that there would be choices I'd like any better. If I were to use Vocalizer Premium voices regularly in Jaws 17, it would probably be Allison or Eva, but the few days I spent with each of them sent me back to Eloquence. Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel entering text narrative that crosses columns
Hello, You want to use the merge columns facility. I would select the columns/rows that will contain your narrative and hit control-1 to format the cells. Hit control-tab to move to the alignment tab and tab around until you find merge columns. You can then use the format functions to make it look nice. Note that is from memory and I haven't done it for a while. So, have a look around and you'll find it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Major Outlook 2010 Problem
Hi Tom, Since you indicated that you are very good at deleting unwanted items, I'd take a look at cleaning up your data files. Remember that when you simply delete an item, it just goes into your deleted folder. Check this first and if you have a huge number of items here, you can permanently delete them. Next, I'd take a look to see if your data files are being automatically compressed. I'd go ahead and manually compress them. A Google search for how to compress outlook 2010 data files has lots of information on this topic. You may remember that, last week, I posted a quiry to the list regarding an increasingly sluggish Windows 7 desktop computer with Jaws, to the point that it became unusable. I originally thought the problem related to some sort of a virus I had gotten, since it seemed that something in internet explorer was constantly running. I think that might have been part of the problem, but after taking the computer to a local computer repair shop, it seems that the biggest problem is with Outlook 2010. I am not sure how he found this out, but the computer repair person indicated that my Outlook data file is unbelievably huge! It contains something like 10 gigs of material, and is constantly running, and trying to refresh itself. I access both my work and personal g-mail accounts via Outlook 2010, and am very good at deleting e-mails that are no longer of use to me. I also periodically check my all mail folder in my personal g-mail account to be sure that deleted e-mails are not showing up in there. I guess my question is this: Should I totally un-install Outlook 2010, and re-install it again? Or, is there some way I can correct this issue with my currrent version of Outlook 2010? My University currently uses Office 365, which I know contains a version of Outlook, so I'm wondering if that might be another way to go. The computer tech at my local computer repair shop advises me to forget outlook, and just access my personal g-mail via the g-mail web site, but I have not had the greatest luck navigating that web site with Jaws 14. I'm not sure if such an approach would work with my work e-mail account either. Any wisdom that can be shed on this issue would be appreciated. Thank you. Re: [JAWS-Users] [EXTERNAL] Re: outlook 2010 isn't reading emails correctly.
Hello, With the latest release of JAWS 16, on my Windows 7 machine, in Outlook 2010, JAWS no longer automatically reads the window titles when moving from one folder to another. This is a change with this newest release of JAWS. Here's my statement to JAWS Support and their reply. I've just installed JAWS Version 16.0.2136 on my Windows 7 machine. In outlook 2010, JAWS no longer reads the title of a new folder window when changing from one folder to another. Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific technical Support. If you perform the insert+t command or the insert+end key command, this reads the title of the window. If I can be of any additional assistance to you, feel free to email me back. Be sure to include all previous correspondence pertaining to this matter when replying to this message so that we might better assist you. This was from a support person who has been with Freedom Scientific Support for many years. Hi Mike, I'm using Windows 7, IE 11 and JAWS 16. This is an ongoing problem for us too. I have Screen Track Virtual Cursor checked and it doesn't seem to help. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: CTRL keys do not work.
Hello, In my case, I could make it happen by hitting the left shift+control key shortcut. It would change my keyboard type and, as I indicated in my note below, the right control key would remain down. So, for example, if I hit the Tab key with the right Alt key, I would get Alt+Control+Tab. I've experienced the JAWS problem in the past and I actually did try your solution of rapidly tapping the control key. It didn't help. The problem went completely away after making adjustments in Regional and Language settings. I know we like to jump on it's a JAWS problem. But, in my case, it was not. Actually this is likely an age-old JAWS problem that's been around since version 3, 4, or 5. Occasionally a key gets stuck electronically (not mechanically) and it adds to other key combinations and results in either nothing happening or unexpected results. The age-old solution is to rapidly tap each pair of keys several times each -- the pair of control keys, the pair of alt keys, the pair of shift keys, and the pair of windows keys. Usually this resolves the problem It's never been fixed, so it will happen in JAWS 16 and any version of Windows. Hi Annette, Under File/Options, there is a Search tab where you can change this. So, when you'r in your folder of messages: hit Alt-F followed by T, Hit right-arrow 6 times to land on Search, Hit Tab 2 times to land on current Folder..., Hit down-arrow to change it to All Folders, Hit tab and check other options and the OK button.
