natural (or gray) = unbleached. For linen the term "gray" is often used to

the various laces, with stitch diagrams. But she gives the historical context

It is possible to scan a brown or even orange pricking card, and have the
computer print it out as magenta or apple green. You have to adjust the color
balance. Possibly intensify the shadows (which makes the black dots blacker).

The wooden part of a midlands bobbin is quite small and very light weight. I
think the spangle ring and its beads may be necessary to give sufficient
weight. Antique "thumpers", a alternate midlands style, are much thicker and
don't have a spangle right.

I really like that one. I can't say for sure if anyone has ever made that
before you. But I don't think so. It is a very complex, large diagonal design,
with rose ground units in alternating rows. Most grounds don't get that

I think some tensioning is always necessary, regardless of bobbin weight
relative to thread size. I just do it differently. For fine thread laces it is
enough to just stroke the bobbins in a downward direction, like petting them.
For thicker threads, especially thicker linens, actually tugging

braid/plait based straight lace, Milanese tape lace and simpler peasant tape

This discussion of lace/laces brings to mind a wild life film I saw last night
about polecats (which I discovered is a relative of weasels). "We must

If your alternate theory is correct it would account for why modern Italian
bobbin laces are nearly all tape laces, and why Flanders developed Brussels
and Duchesse. Of course, the alternate theory could have been invented
precisely from looking at the modern dichotomy, and thinking it go
actly the same as
the pure Milanese or Flemish tape laces.
So from a historical viewpoint both constant width and variable width, and
discrete motifs were all part of the antique Milanese lace.

Translating Russian lace text to English certainly does produce hilarious
results. You can see how the problem arises. The dictionary gives 2 or 3
words that might match the particular lace word in the Russian text. But the
translator, or translator software, has no idea which word is clos

There is a guy who makes replicas of historic costume, with his own hand
embroidery and bobbin lace added. I just can't remember the name (a senior
moment). Help! Brian something?? He has a website, and I can't even find my
link.

I just did a google search onBrussels bobbin lace and Flemish
bobbin lace. I have posted them on my pinterest board. It is usually hard to
find such early laces.
