Re: compiling lyx 2.0.1 Now: lyx2lyx
Thanks all who tried to help me with the compiling. I have given up for the time being and will wait until my son has time to help me (I am too old). I could not find zlib1g-dev under 'All' in synaptics. I am now using my notebook for completing a paper in lyx. However, the lyx file from the pc tells me, the DesmodiumPaperF.lyx is from a newer LyX-Version, and the lyx2lyx-Script could not convert the document. The Lyx version of the PC was 2.2.2, the version of the notebook 2.0.0svn. I tried separately in a shell lyx2lyx DesmodiumPaperF.lyx bash: lyx2lyx: command not found. What can I do?

Completely removing LyX and MikTeX from Windows XP [was RE: pdflatex never finishes (LyX 2.0.1)]
Hi, It would be a good idea to export a file to LaTeX (pdflatex), then run pdflatex against it in a DOS window. That might help pin down whether there are problems with your LaTeX (MiKTeX?) distribution. I tried exporting three files and see three different behaviours. Looks like my whole installation is even more broken than I thought. I think I will wipe all LyX and MikTeX from disk and try re-installing afterwards. If there anything I should delete after uninstalling the software from the Windows XP Control Panel to end up with a clean system? Matthias

Chinese characters in German text
I am using Lyx 2.0 and JabRef for references. I write my thesis in German and need to include some references in Chinese characters. Updating to new Texlive release
Dear all, I am sure this question has been asked before, but searching the list and the wiki did not produce any result. (please redirect me to the correct place if I am wrong. Or enlighten me and I'll a dd a wiki page if none exists). Question: How do convince an existing Lyx installation to use a newly installed Texlive system? My user case: a. I used to have Texlive 2010 installed. I upgraded to TexLive 2011 (better late than never...). I set up paths, etcetera post-installation. (I did NOT erase my old Texlive 2010 installation, because I still need it for older projects.) Now every call to tex/latex/luatex, etc from command line brings up files, packages, and binaries from the new installation (e.g. from /usr/local/texlive/2011/) b. I started Lyx, reconfigured and restarted it. Nothing happens. Lyx uses the old Texlive class files in /usr/local/texlive/2010/, as well as the old binaries. What am I missing? HTML export: some small problems...
Hi, I am trying the HTML export possibilities of LyX. I have the last version of Elyxer installed on my Mac (OSX 10.6 French) and I use Lyx 2.0.1. I am preparing a page where I would like to set the text colour and use an horizontal rule in some places. I used the Document Properties/Coulours tab to fix the implicit colour of text in my document, but when the file is exported to HTML by Elyxer, the texte is black (the same is also true for LyxHTML export). I have inserted an horizontal rule in the page, but I get in the HTML the Lyx code instead of the rule: \begin_inset CommandInset lineLatexCommand ruleoffset 0.5exwidth 100col%height 1pt\end_inset Am I doing something stupid, or am I demanding too much from Elyxer? I Have used Latex2HTML under Linux some years ago and this kind of cosmetics was a piece of cake for it... I have never used it under OSX and I like the HTML generated by Elyxer otherwise. I know that I can correct these problems by hand or by CSS editing, but would like to know if I can handle them directly in Lyx, instead of having to da another step of conversion (especially because I am using Lyx to quickly setup a web page from existing material in Latex and Lyx. Yes, I am very late on this task, and trying to catch the gap :-) ). Re: Updating to new Texlive release
Julio, David: I do not have the ubuntu-provided install of texlive. However, I do have 2 working texlive installs: the 2010 texlive and the 2011 texlive. I need to keep the older one around for a while until a book I wrote with it is actually printed. I have no problems from the command line. I just switch the paths around in my .profile file. But I want to have texlive as the default, so that all my new projects compile with the newer installation and newer packages. Again, I can accomplush the task easily from the command line, and pdflatex and companions work as expected. It' s just Lyx that's giving me problems. A far I can tell, when I hit reconfigure it finds the older 2010 installation and it stops there. Is LyX using the PATH variable to search for executables? If so, perhaps there is a config somewhere file that caches the results? Cheers, Stefano On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 11:15 AM, David L. Again eLyXer, but bibtex this time
I am meeting another problem with elyxer conversion. If I do not put the .bib files in the same folder as the .lyx file, elyxer does not seem able to find them, and the bibliography is empty. If I put them in the same folder, I get the bibliography. Also, I have not been able to find a way to generate a standard agsm (harvard) style bibliography reference. I only get a number between brackets [1] as reference, even if I choose author-name in the options of natbib in the document properties box. Only author-name2 gives me a real author-name type of reference (but brackets, and also with the key typed in the beginning of the full reference in the typest bibliography). These are very commonly necessary functions, so I assume that I am doing something strange. How can I correct these problems? I use the following version of elyxer: elyxer.py --version * eLyXer version 1.2.3 (2011-08-31) which elyxer.py /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin/elyxer.py Thank you for your help in advance! Hi Julien, I can tell that Lyx is using the wrong pdflatex (and, most importantly, the wrong classes), from the Latex log: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.11 (TeX Live 2010) (format=pdflatex 2011.1.4) 15 SEP 2011 09:14 entering extended mode restricted \write18 enabled. %-line parsing enabled. and from the Tex information dialog in the Tools menu (with full path enabled). Why this is important to me: I routinely use biblatex, biber, and lua(La)tex. They have changed considerably between TL2010 and TL2011, and are not fully compatible. In LyX, could Tools Preferences Paths PATH prefix be pointing to the old version? Paul
Re: Updating to new Texlive release
Problem solved :-) Thanks to everyone, and particularly to Julio for pointing me in the right direction. As he guessed, the problem was not with Lyx, but with the environment that Kde works with. I always launch my applications from Krunner (the little Kde app that offer a command line-like mini-screen). After a lot of searching, I discovered that: 1. Krunner uses the PATH variables set by startkde (the script that starts the KDE desktop) 2. startkde does two things, path-wise: a - first it uses the PATH settings it inherits from the process it is run from; b - then it looks for executable (i.e scripts) files in kde's /env directories (e.g. in $HOME/.kde4/env and other env dirs system wide) c - it runs any executable files it finds 3. To align the PATH variable in a bash shell (which I set in .profile and .bash_profile) with krunner's, I wrote a one-line file which exports the correct path, called it profile.sh, made it executable, and put it in a newly created dir ~HOME/.kde4/env after logging out and restarting kde, lyx now finds TL2011 when launched from a shell and from Krunner. Thanks to everyone. Cheers, Stefano On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 4:42 PM, Paul Rubin ru...@msu.edu wrote: In LyX, could Tools Preferences Paths PATH prefix be pointing to the old version? Re: Again eLyXer, but bibtex this time
Hi again, On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 7:08 PM, Murat Yildizoglu myi...@gmail.com wrote: I am meeting another problem with elyxer conversion. If I do not put the .bib files in the same folder as the .lyx file, elyxer does not seem able to find them, and the bibliography is empty. If I put them in the same folder, I get the bibliography. You can also use relative paths, and they are supposed to work! Where are you placing the .bib files? Also, I have not been able to find a way to generate a standard agsm (harvard) style bibliography reference. I only get a number between brackets [1] as reference, even if I choose author-name in the options of natbib in the document properties box. Only author-name2 gives me a real author-name type of reference (but brackets, and also with the key typed in the beginning of the full reference in the typest bibliography). Let me explain you a little bit how BibTeX support works in eLyXer: it keeps its own templates to transform the variables into references and formats. These templates can be located in src/conf/base.conf. For example the one you are using (I assume it is authordate2) looks like this: [BibStylesConfig.authordate2] cite:$surname, $year default:$authors. $year. i$title/i. $publisher.{ URL a href=$url$url/a.}{ $note.} @article:$authors. $year. $title. i$journal/i, b$volume/b($number), $pages.{ URL a href=$url$url/a.}{ $note.} @book:$authors. $year. i$title/i. $publisher.{ URL a href=$url$url/a.}{ $note.} As you see, the first line defines the style, authordate2; the second line the citing style, in this case author surname and year. I am afraid the cites always show the brackets right now. After that you can see how eLyXer will display the default document type, then an article and a book. These are very commonly necessary functions, so I assume that I am doing something strange. How can I correct these problems? It is just that these templates are user-contributed; apparently you are the first to request the agsm format. If you want you can edit your elyxer.py file and insert a new style: just go after the vancouver style and insert this: [BibStylesConfig.vancouver] ... [BibStylesConfig.agsm] cite:$surname, $year default:$authors. $title; {$publisher, }$year.{ $howpublished.}{ URL: a href=$url$url/a.}{ $note.} @article:$authors. $title. i$journal/i, $year{;{b$volume/b}{($number)}{:$pages}}.{ URL: a href=$url$url/a.}{ $note.} @book:$authors. $title. {$publisher, }$year.{ URL: a href=$url$url/a.}{ $note.} Note that each document type (@article) has variables ($title) which are taken from the .bib file, and some HTML code (i$journal/i) to format the text. Now you can play with it until you like the result, and then send it my way. Alternatively, you can send me another sample privately and I will work on it. Thanks, Alex.

Looks like my whole installation is even more broken than I thought. I think I will wipe all LyX and MikTeX from disk and try re-installing afterwards.
Yes, I am very late on this task, and trying to catch the gap :-) ). problem with LyZ/Zotero/LyX integration

Chinese characters in German text
I am using Lyx 2.0 and JabRef for references. I write my thesis in German and need to include some references in Chinese characters. I use Unicode and am able to input Chinese characters in JabRef, but when I want to include them in Lyx it doesn't seem to work. I only get a question mark for all my references in Lyx, including those which are in German. How can I fix this? Thank you!
Problem with cross references
I have 2 documents, class koma script book (in french) which I started writing back in 2004. Since them, I've been working on them, adding more chapters. If there anything I should delete after uninstalling the software from the Windows XP Control Panel to end up with a "clean" system? Matthias Assuming windows 7, you may want to delete (or simply rename/move it) the LyX preferences folder ("lyx20"), in the AppData\Roaming folder in you home directory (the AppData folder is hidden). that would be C:\Users\your_login\AppData\Roaming\lyx20 on windows 7, and something like (from memory) C:\Documents and Settings\your_login\AppData\Roaming\lyx20 on XP. Also, some apps can help checking for leftovers ("ccleaner" is such an app) when uninstalling a soft (they are safe to use to analyse the left-overs, you may want to be careful if you use them for cleaning) Sincerely, Olivier
Of course, one compressed source file is 1.2G in size so it takes a while to download, and the build also takes a long time, a lot of disk space (about 5G), and strsses the CPU. But, when the package is built, I upgrade the installation, then invoke LyX to check. It fires right up and works without any involvement by me. Rich

I have inserted an horizontal rule in the page, but I get in the HTML the Lyx code instead of the rule: "\begin_inset CommandInset lineLatexCommand ruleoffset "0.5ex"width "100col%"height "1pt"\end_inset " Am I doing something stupid, or am I demanding too much from Elyxer? I Have used Latex2HTML under Linux some years ago and this kind of cosmetics was a piece of cake for it... I have never used it under OSX and I like the HTML generated by Elyxer otherwise. I know that I can correct these problems by hand or by CSS editing, but would like to know if I can handle them directly in Lyx, instead of having to da another step of conversion (especially because I am using Lyx to quickly setup a web page from existing material in Latex and Lyx. Yes, I am very late on this task, and trying to catch the gap :-) ). I went at it directly with the Texlive net installer. Installation was fine. Indeed, I am now using lyx to write, exporting the file to Latex, and then doing all my compilations either from the command line or from Kile. It is just Lyx that refuses to see the new installation. Perhaps I should trash the relevant config files in my ~/.lyx folder? Can anyone know which ones?
Re: Updating to new Texlive release
%&-line parsing enabled. and from the Tex information dialog in the Tools menu (with full path enabled). Why this is important to me: I routinely use biblatex, biber, and lua(La)tex. They have changed considerably between TL2010 and TL2011, and are not fully compatible. The dialog calls it a "PATH prefix." I tried adding "/usr/share/texlive/2011/" but it has no effect on my system Cheers, Stefano Just guessing: /usr/share/texlive/2011/bin reconfigure Good luck, Julien

Have a look at the LaTeX (pdflatex) -> PDF (pdflatex) converter, in case you had customized it with an absolute path. -- Julien
Re: Updating to new Texlive release
The path for gnome is independent from path for bash. Run Lyx from bash, if it works with 2011, then you know you have to update gnome's path. - Julio Rojas jcredbe...@gmail.com On Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 7:46 PM, Julien Riouxwrote: > On 15/09/2011 7:24 PM, stefano franchi wrote: >> >> Hi Julien, >> >> >> I can tell that Lyx is using the wrong pdflatex (and, most >> importantly, the wrong classes), from the Latex log: >> >> This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.11 (TeX Live 2010) >> (format=pdflatex 2011.1.4) 15 SEP 2011 09:14 >> entering extended mode >> restricted \write18 enabled. >> %&-line parsing enabled. >> >> >> and from the Tex information dialog in the Tools menu (with full path >> enabled). >> >> Why this is important to me: I routinely use biblatex, biber, and >> lua(La)tex. On Windows XP, look in C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data and delete any folders with 'Lyx' or 'Miktex' in their names. Note that this will delete any customized layouts, keyboard bindings etc. you might have stored for LyX. If you have any such things, it would be prudent to archive copies first. Also look in C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data for MikTeX directories. (LyX stores nothing there, but I think MiKTeX does.) Repeat this above with "All Users" in place of to catch anything stored if either LyX of MiKTeX was installed for all users. Paul
Re: Updating to new Texlive release
In LyX, could Tools > Preferences > Paths > PATH prefix be pointing to the old version?
Re: Again eLyXer, but bibtex this time

$year. $title. $publisher.{ URL $url.}{ $note.} @article:$authors. $year. $title. $journal, $volume($number), $pages.{ URL $url.}{ $note.} @book:$authors. $year. $title. $publisher.{ URL $url.}{ $note.} As you see, the first line defines the style, authordate2; the second line the citing style, in this case author surname and year. I am afraid the cites always show the brackets right now. After that you can see how eLyXer will display the default document type, then an article and a book. > These are very commonly necessary functions, so I assume that I am > doing something strange. $title; {$publisher, }$year.{ $howpublished.}{ URL: $url.}{ $note.} @article:$authors. $title. $journal, $year{;{$volume}{($number)}{:$pages}}.{ URL: $url.}{ $note.} @book:$authors. $title. {$publisher, }$year.{ URL: $url.}{ $note.} Note that each document type (@article) has variables ($title) which are taken from the .bib file, and some HTML code ($journal) to format the text. Now you can play with it until you like the result, and then send it my way. Alternatively, you can send me another sample privately and I will work on it. Thanks, Alex.
