Re: Calibri Font

2024-04-30 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
Brian,

have you googled this?

   https://www.google.com/search?q=calibri+latex

gives 94 answers. You would put the commands into the Preamble.

Now, however, comes the obvious question: Why? :-)-O

Calibri, besides being proprietary (and not on CTAN for easy
installation into LaTeX), is a Sans-Serif font.

For a documents Serifs are usually recommended for readability, whereas
Sans Serifs are more for presentations. Obviously this is
debatable :-)-O

There is a huge number of publicly available fonts on CTAN. You can look
at the font catalogue

   https://tug.org/FontCatalogue/

or experiment with a test document containing blindtext (lorem ispum)
and use

   Document -> Settings... -> Fonts

The pulldown will offer a number of fonts and if you untick

   Use non-TeX fonts (via XeTeX/LuaTeX)

it'll offer a (limited) number of fonts and even show if they are
already installed. (You can install via the TeX Live manager).

If you tick it there is a much larger offering, which I assume are the
ones available on the OS (in my case Mac).

I myself am a NoTo fan,by the way, with Source Code Pro for Typewriter.

Re: LyX and MacOS upgrade to M3?

2024-04-28 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
I think this (Windows) is serious underkill :-)-O as this works out of
the box. I use Sonoma 14.4.1 and LyX 2.4.0 RC4 (but 2.3.7.2 workd
without any issues on my Sonoma 14.4.1 M2 MacBook Air)

Safari and Mail.app work very well, even though I use GoogleChrome and
BetterBird (improvement on Thunderbird) myself.

Turns out, that it was the external USB-C Hard Disk used for Time
Machine which caused the panic attacks :-)-O. Disconnected it and
voilà.

So went and bought a new drive and it also gives no problems.

Re: Compiling causes LyX to crash [UPDATE]

What I do for long documents is to split it by chapter into child
documents which (may) include a .tex file where I can do a lot of things
including conditionals.

I can then compile those also individually if I have an issue which then
makes "bisecting" it down to the error (or an MWE) easier.

Tim,

Does this affect all files or only certain ones? I am

paragraph which exhibits this behavior on your machine?

The problem is that as a paragraph gets longer, the cursor

tex2lyx Feature Request

2023-06-30 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
Hi,

I am doing an exercise of translating OpenOffice formatted files into
Lyx via pandoc and tex2lyx.

The LyX file is readable but when I use scrlettr it wants Koma Letter V1
which is not installed. I had to do

 find /Applications/LyX.app/ -name 'scrl*'

to find

 /Applications/LyX.app//Contents/Resources/layouts/scrlettr.layout
 /Applications/LyX.app//Contents/Resources/layouts/scrlttr2.layout

and I found

 pandoc --list-output-formats

so I wonder if one should not implement a similar switch like

 --list-modules

or similar which would do just that and return something like

Then it is helpful to produce a minimal working example (MWE)

closing a named buffer?

2022-12-14 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse
Hi,

I can easily close the current buffer with a command like (on the mac)

   LYXPIPE=$(find ~/Library/Application\ Support ~/.lyx \
  -name .lyxpipe.in 2>/dev/null | head -1)
   echo "LYXCMD:P2:buffer-close" > "$LYXPIPE"

Is it possible to close a named buffer even another was "active" using
the LYXPIPE mechanism?

Let's say the file names I am editing are a.lyx and b.lyx, and a.lyx is
in front, how would I close b.lyx while keeping a.lyx in front/active?

I am willing to RTFM :-)-O

So if you try to upgrade I would strongly suggest to make a full

Would you say it’s safe to upgrade to MacOS13 now (with LyX 2.3.6.2)?

When I installed it, it complained about Python missing, but I
somehow managed to get Python installed too.

I’m rather new to Mac, and in no hurry at all to do the upgrade.
Perhaps it would be best to wait for LyX 2.4?

I’ll take your advice -

Re: Problem converting older files with lyx2lyx

2022-10-20 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

The easiest is to completeley uninstall TeX and then LyX (on the Mac you
can just Trash it) and then first to install TeX (MacTex in whatever
guise or form) and then LyX, which in the first run will do a Tools ->
Reconfigure which you can do manually any time.

You should be able to run

/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/lyx2lyx/lyx2lyx -o abc.lyx
testfile.lyx

directly (ie without the python call) as well.

What do

head -1 /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/lyx2lyx/lyx2lyx

and

which python

show?

the conversion works perfectly. Yet, from inside lyx it doesn’t
work.

Meanwhile, trying to edit converters, my LyX installation got further
damaged. Now the font used inside LyX is screwed up (only
sans-serif), although I didn’t change anything about fonts. I feel
my LyX installation is damaged. How can I uninstall completely, and
then install from scratch?

Regarding screen fonts, if you go to Tools > Preferences... > Look &
Feel > Screen Fonts, you should see which fonts are being used in the
LyX UI (including sample text for each). Do they indicate that any
fonts with serifs are selected? If not, are any fonts you would like
listed among the options in the select boxes?

Ricardo,

I have an (almost) 1000 page ops handbook of 25 chapters (child

images) and a 550 line Makefile.

It displays in 12 point font in landscape when I need to work something
(like recently reinstalling Perl from Homebrew) and I am DYING to lay my
hands on production LyX 2.4 so I can refine this to export cleanly to
DocBook and thus to Kindle so I can easily carry this around on iPad

Can't use dev in production (medical practice) and don't think 2.3.6.2
can read the new format yet.

I will share my experiences here :-)-O

That can be a Python issue. But it's nice to see it works.

What I have done in the past is to convert all LyX files I have below my
work area with something similar to

find ~/medicine/cpd/ -name '*.lyx' -type f -exec open {} ';'

and then having to save all the files manually.

Which of course would not work for your particular situation but could
be adapted, which I might just do for myself when I am bored as I
otherwise would have to think about an Applescript to automate this when
the format changes next time :-)-O

I have been using lyx for many years now (which is why I have old

On the Mac (deduced from the icloud address)

find /Applications/LyX.app/ -name lyx2lyx -type f

/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/lyx2lyx/lyx2lyx

Try the complete path/file name on the old file and see what that says.

Looks a little like a TeX installation issue, just to be sure, you did
install TeX, right?

I use Homebrew, which has three versions ((annually) updated)

 brew install mactex
 brew install mactex-no-gui
 brew install basictex

I use the latter, and apply a small modification to the default

 TEXDIR=$(dirname $(kpsewhich texmf.cnf))
 TEXPARENT=$(dirname $(dirname $(kpsewhich texmf.cnf)))
 perl -i -p -e 's+\$SELFAUTOPARENT/+/$TEXPARENT/+' $TEXDIR/texmf.cnf

As I have multiple systems I can update the packages missing after an
update of basictex easily with something like

 tlmgr install $(ssh -C USER@HOST tlmgr list --only-installed \
| awk '{gsub(":","",$2);print $2}'

and so don't need to have the complete installation.

I also like long error lines and do so something like this

 brew install gsed

 for i in error_line max_print_line half_error_line
 do
 gsed -i "/$i/d" $TEXDIR/texmf.cnf
 done
 cat >> $TEXDIR/texmf.cnf < Thanks, you mean running lyx2lyx from the terminal? Then I get “command

LyX will display, but can't convert. So you need to look what image you

Sometimes just a Tools --> Reconfigure will do the trick

Re: Missing character

2022-09-01 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

Auntie Gugel tells me via

https://unicodeplus.com/U+0098

that this (SoS) is the Tilde '~' but it probably does not matter.

I would first remove the reference

\ref{alg:Skript-zur PRC-Erzeugung}

If that does the trick, you may want to remove the space from the
Reference and corresponding Label.

If not remove everything from the (copy of the) document but the
offending line.

If that causes the error, remove that line from the original.

If that does the trick, retype the line carefully (without label and
refefrence.

If that works, put the label in.

If that works put the reference in.

If that gives you the error use my above shortcut and rename the
reference and (corresponding) label.

As to your Google proposal:
The Internet tells me, e.g.: 'START OF STRING' (U+0098)
and:
Character U+0098 (152) is an invisible control code that is almost
never used. The trick is that "ISO-8859-1" has a different meaning to
Java and web browsers. For Java it really is the ISO-8859-1 standard,
which maps exactly to the first 256 code points of Unicode. That
includes a range of little-used C1 control characters at 128-159.

What I tried was to put the surrounding of the error (was a figure +
legend) in a lyx note, run it again and check the tex file again. The
0098 complain is now at another place, which had not been given before
as an error.

Paul recommended to run a bisection search, but its the same problem
as described above.

I was hoping to localize the 0099 character by using the editor
'best', which allows to search for decimal codes, but that did not
show it at all. Perhaps somebody knows a better editor to check for
those characters.

FAZIT:
I gave up, since it is a warning only and it takes me too much time
(and time of those trying to help me)
Thanks anyway!

Re: Voice Recognition Accessibility

2022-08-04 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

I purchased a Dragon Dictate license for the Mac exactly 4 weeks before
they discontinued the Mac Support.

I was never able to dictate into the Mac LyX, so I went through a small
detour dictating MarkDown which is much easier to dictate than LaTeX,
and worked extremely well for me. I spent some time on a PanDoc
Template, and so the translation into LyX works perfectly. Use a
Makefile and include files for example.

That said, from what I read, maths in MarkDown are LaTeX anyway, so if
you can dictate (normal text) into LyX the solution below (ERT) should
do quite well.

You are not listening.

Don't do this, there is no need to and it'll confuse your colleagues.

Split the document into chapters and have each "owned" by a particular

Re: Suggestions for custom layouts/templates creation

2022-05-20 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

I have recreated a number of forms required by the local Medical
Industrial Complex :-)-O using tables, judicious spacing and other
trickery to achieve reasonable similarity which has been accepted in
each case.

I usually use Komascript but have a few legacy forms that I created in
Memoir and they are not broken.

It's a lot of manual labor, even only once:-)-O and you can template
(variables like $$SURNAME$$) with Perl (or for the younglings Python
:-)-O) if you want.

The really complicated and colorful forms I do in LaTeX with the PDF as
the background and then use something like \usepackage{lpic} so I can
place the variables right where I need them, usually incorporating
them into Perl scripts.

Using Pashua for simple forms and Platypus to create (simple) Apps on
the Mac makes this quite powerful.

Usually these forms change over time but in particular the lab I use has
overlooked the outdatedness of my forms (probably because they are happy
not to have to try to read my handwriting :-)-O)

prepared. At the time LyX 2.3.6.2 was built it was announced already but not
sure when it happens.

Now you have to install Python yourself. You may download it from python.org
(https://www.python.org/downloads/macos/). Alternatively you may run python in
a terminal window and choose to install it from Apple. I recommend the first
option.

Re: How to include a bunch of tex commands globally

2022-04-18 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

That will not survive LyX Updates. Local Layouts should go into the
local layout difrectory (which on the Mac is below ~/Library/Application
Support/LyX-2.3).

Never mind that "must be located" is incorrect. LaTeX finds documents
in many places (find out what texhash does :-)-O)

I don't understand the issue, however. Why do you need (look at) the
TeX files generated by LyX? And even if so, why the concern about the
"clutter"?

That's what the Preamble is for (put in ton's of LaTeX and never look
at it again :-)-O)

I have a large include.tex for my handbook whih is included by the
master document and all child documents, so I have the same
"environment" for all and even setting up conditionals so font changes
depending on Landscape vs Portrait and similar.

To this bunch of tex commands there is also a corresponding LyX module
that defines the theorems in the editor (paragraph styles, section
5.3.7 in the customization manual).

I want to avoid this 80 lines code block in my document preamble. It
clutters the document structure.

Of course, one can insert the code block as it is inside this:

Preamble
⟨80 lines of code go here⟩
EndPreamble

But this adds the big code block right into my preamble, which, as I
said, I want to avoid.

The other option is to save the code block in a tex file
(`myPreable.tex` for example) and to load it into my document:
Preamble
\input{myPreamble}
EndPreamble

But this means that the file `myPreamble.tex` must be located in the
root directory of the LyX project.

Is there any way to load the code block while it is located in the
"Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/layouts/" directory?  I am
about to send this module file and all its accompanying files to a
colleague, and I want to spare him from the task of taking care which
files go where.

I hope my question is clear.

Hi all,

In the past, some exporters have implemented the custom of not
indenting the first of several successive paragraphs by using a
different class of paragraph for the first of a series of paragraphs.
This way of doing things makes more work for the person writing the
export, and more work for the person converting the export to
acceptable ePub, because those special classes will need to be backed
out or otherwise specially handled.

Not indenting the first of a series of paragraphs is easily
accomplished by the following two lines of CSS:

p::first-letter{margin-left: 3em;}
:not(p) + p::first-letter{margin-left:0.0001em;}

Let CSS decide which is the first of several consecutive paragraphs,
and let CSS define what to do with that paragraph. Make it easy on
everybody.

I took an hour to figure this out. Could somebody please take 3
minutes to forward it to the developer's list and also the person
who is writing the HTML export?

Like I said, I spent an hour getting that code just right. I did the

I don't have time to learn the quirks of every project's bugtracker,

At a lot of projects, the bugtracker is where requests go to die

If I could change one thing about FOSS it would be to get rid of
bugtrackers and work directly with the user. That's what we did at
VimOutliner, and bugs got solved and requests got implemented very
quickly.

Re: lyx not a readable Lyx document

Yes and no,

LyX 2.4 uses a different format from 2.3 and hence the (2.3) lyx2lyx
does not know the new (2.4) format (yet).

That happens during (almost) every major upgrade and the developers
then usually "backport" that so I would think the eventual 2.3.6.3 (or
2.3.7) will be able to read the 2.4 format.

Dear all,

Until now, the handling of the list was like: messages from
subscribers go through, other messages get discarded.

There is actually a way to filter e-mails marked as spam, and I have
already changed all our other lists to take advantage of this
information.

Today it is lyx-users' turn. The new behavior is:
* spams are automatically discarded; please notify the list if a
message of yours just disappears. It seems to work correctly on the
other lists that we have;
* members posts not qualified as spam go through as usual;
* remaining non-member posts are held for moderation.

The big advantage is that now non-subscribers will be able to post
messages (with a low amount of manual moderation from my side).

Comments welcome.

I'd suggest you put it back the way it was. I'm on 30+ FOSS mailing
lists, and can't police everything to see that it goes through. If some
AI algorithm somewhere decides I'm spam because of my email provider
or whatever, I'm just writing into the wind, wasting a lot of time.

And what's the supposed upside? So non-subscribers can post. Look at
any netiquette guide and they'll roundly catcall the clowns who begin
or end their message with "please CC me because I'm not on the list."

Let's not inconvenience valuable list members to accommodate those so
lazy they can't take 5 minutes to join the mailing list.

After installation (I do that from from Homebrew) I would do

ln -fs $HOME/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.3/preferences \

and run unison with a force from the old to the new, but installing
unison is currently not advisable for casual users as the stable mac
version suffers from a SSH issue introduced by Monterey and the
developers are working on a rewrite anyway.

rsync is too complicated so I would probably just do something like this
on the old box

tar cvfz ~/Downloads/lyxdir.tgz ~/Library/Application\ Support/LyX-2.3
scp ~/Downloads/lyxdir.tgz newbook.local:~/Downloads/

and on the new one

cd
tar xvfz ~/Downloads/lyxdir.tgz

I run unison regularly on all my systems in a star formation
synchronizing with each other, which I offer as the answer to below
question.

As it is scriptable it was a nice exercise to script it so that it knows
where it runs and what to to exactly, but that's another story :-)-O.

What I did to fix the problem is include a configurable table in the

ideal. The regular HTML export does this, so it should be easy to

Since it such a schlepp, why don't you participate in the development or

Never mind that LyX seems to predate the Kindle, this is a LaTeX issue

As written numerous times I am very keen on on the new DocBook format

Ken,

where is the missing link :-)-O?

This is great news.

I am actually waiting for 2.4 and DocBook to convert my 859
page "handbook" to EPUB so my staff and I can carry it around on our
Kindles (App on iPad actually).

But, I would be very keen to see how your package works.

My little handbook doesn't really need anything fancier than a few
images (JPG, PNG and PDF).

I also use (in one (common) "include.tex") something like

 \usepackage{etoolbox}
 \newbool{business}
 \boolfalse{business}
 \newbool{private}
 \booltrue{private}

but if that (see your below remark) were not to work I can address that
via a Makefile and different include (front matter) files as you seem to
be doing.

Maybe you can look into that, because then you can have a single include
file by putting something like this into a Makefile

bus:
 @perl -i -p \
  -e 's/\\boolfalse\{business\}/\\booltrue\{business\}/g;' \
  -e 's/\\booltrue\{private\}/\\boolfalse\{private\}/g;' \
  include.tex
 @lyx -f -e pdf5 handbook.lyx

priv:
 @perl -i -p \
  -e 's/\\booltrue\{business\}/\\boolfalse\{business\}/g;' \
  -e 's/\\boolfalse\{private\}/\\booltrue\{private\}/g;' \
  include.tex
 @lyx -f -e pdf5 handbook.lyx

and then use something like

 \ifbool{business}{}{\include{business.tex}}
 \ifbool{private}{\include{private.tex}}{}

as ERT.

Looks complicated, is complicated, but once it works no further
touching required.

In the meantime I have pulled

I would use a single word for the label or separate ords with ':' ie
something like first:program. If that's the culprit, we should file an
improvement request (ie checking for spaces from within LyX).

Generally speaking attaching a MWE is very helpful, ie the document
without ANY changes to the default and ONLY the code required to
trigger the issue.

Often constructing this lets me find the issue myself :-)-O

On huge documents this is of course very difficult, but then halving
the document successively until one finds the area causing the issue

Re: LuaTeX vs XeTeX

2021-12-19 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse via lyx-users

Stve,

I like the Noto fonts, but my understanding is that all TeX Gyre
fonts also work under PDFLaTeX.

But, LUA is really cool.

You can put simple stuff into the preamble like

\usepackage{luacode}
\begin{luacode*}
   socket = require "socket"
   function hostname()
  local hname = socket.dns.gethostname():gsub('.local','' )
  return hname
   end
\end{luacode*}
\newcommand\hostname{\directlua{tex.sprint(hostname())}}

which then makes the name of the box you are compiling to PDF on (which
I like in my little handbook) available to ERT (or footers defined in
the preamble).

And more complicated stuff, from calculating Expected Date of Delivery
from Last Menstrual Period, Body Mass Index from weight and height, or
even calculating the nearest Friday of a calculated date (thanks
Herbert :-)-O), access to the differend SQL databases and whatnot.

Of course one can do most of that also in R with knitR but that has
a lot of overhead.

PDFLaTeX is much faster that LuaLaTeX but to be hoest, nowadays the
day to day stuff is so fast anyway that that doesn't matter.

- no more fiddling around with the encoding, everything is UTF-8
- no more restrictions in using fonts, all current types are
supported, like pfb, ttf, utf, ttc, ...
- easy integration of the script language Lua into a document

That's what brought me to LuaTeX and LuaLaTeX: The ability to use TeX
Gyre Schola font, which looks better than everything except its
lookalike Century Schoolbook, but somehow, about 6 years ago, Century
Schoolbook stopped working for me.

Since beginning to use LuaTeX, I've enjoyed that it does everything
the others do, and by using it all the time, I gain expertise and
everything's easier.

I frequently use Insert -> Formatting -> Superscripts (or Subscripts,
but just type ctrl-l and insert \textdegree because a) I don't need to
move my hands from the keyboard and use the trackball, and b) I've
used it many times over the past decades.

When there are multiple ways of doing things all work while each of us
prefers one way. Same with OSes, text editors, etc.

Or use curly braces.

But why would you do this with ERT in the first place?

Instead of \textdegree{} I just used the first character from

Insert -> Symbols -> Superscripts

and Subscripts and get ⁰C.

Never mind that this not only was not an MWE. as you not only don't need
the graphic, it also had an absolute path so wasn't found until manually
changed and a number of lines in the Preamble, some of which are even
superfluous during the non MWE run (like the graphicx one)

Paul,

Well, shame on me for not seeing that! I've used a space elsewhere in

Steve,

On the Mac I do

brew install --cask pdf-squeezer

works well, and so I bought the license. Comes even with a command line
utility so it went straight into the Makefile :-)-O

I must confess, I have a 3.9 MB accounting software of which I only need
the installation part which is 6 pages, so I use qpdf to pull out those,
making 75K.

 brew install qpdf

Besides not having answered (timed) how long it takes, I would
personally, besides looking at shrinkers, int he first instance look at
how the sucker is generated and work on that.

I save my images on R with ggplot2::ggsave and the help page shows:

device Device to use. Can either be a device function (e.g. png),
or one of "eps", "ps", "tex" (pictex), "pdf", "jpeg",
"tiff", "png", "bmp", "svg" or "wmf" (windows only).

I however, put the R chunks into my LyX files so that the images are
generated on the fly (knitR).

You asked in another message how many words my handbook has. It has 25
child documents and I don't know how to run the stats from the comand
line, but the result has 950 pages. As I wrote elsewhere when working
on a chapter I can compile that child document separately which takes
5-10 seconds and look at that before running the Makefile. Works for me.
