What you're asking about, I think, is what Qt calls a 'tooltip'.

In LyX 2.4.1, there will be a tooltip for cross-references:

https://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/8856

It will show the cross-reference number (e.g., 1.1) or, in the case of
formatted references, the format string (e.g., section 1.1). Note that
there is also now an option to show formatted references in the work
area. This is under Document> Settings> Document Class.

Cross-reference previews in LyX workspace

Is there a way to have small preview snippets pop up when hovering over a
cross-reference in LyX workspace? LyX has this for citations but not for other
types of references, as far as I can see.

I mean something along the lines of the now-unmaintained fancy-preview package
http://user.mendelu.cz/marik/fancy-preview/#presentations
Several pdf viewers also have this capability, such as Skim and Texshop viewer.

Folsk,

To find the command needed, use View -> Messages Pane, and then insert the
cross-reference label manually. You should see `dialog-show-new-inset ref`
appear in the Messages pane. This is the command that you need to add to
the shortcut's Function specification when you go to Preferences -> Editing
-> Shortcuts -> New.

Hope this helps,

You can make a shortcut for inserting a label, but I did not find a way
to do it for inserting a cross-reference, so every time I have to use
mouse to click on the toolbar.

Any suggestions?

I have a beamer document, and I want to make a crossreference to a

number. I'm guessing that this is some behavior of latex that beamer has

It depends on which index processor you have set in preferences. As the
PDF reveals, Joel seems to have xindy (or rather texindy) set, which
sometimes has problems with hyperref. Axel and Andrew seem to have
makeindex (the default), which works (you can see the difference by the
letter headers produces by xindy).

A solution (which should be done in the distribution) is to set
"makeindex" on document leven (Document > Settings > Index >
Processor).

Joel,

The makeidx documentation is rather clear that there should be a primary entry
for a specific notion (”GIF” in the example) and a second entry for the more
general category which is referenced (”image formats”). If one of them does
not appear in the index, the processing does not work as expected. I tried out
alternative index processors but the result was always the same. So I don't
have a theory where this behaviour is triggered. I guess you should file a bug
to get the experts involved.

entry for “Grafikformate” (image formats). This is LyX

MiKTeX 2.9 64 bit.

In the Code Preview pane I see, e.g., \index{GIF|see{Image formats}}.

In Document settings, I see

Document class is KOMA-Script book with custom class options:

refpage,intoc,bibliography=totoc,index=totoc,BCOR7.5mm,captions=tableheading

Indexes is default. (Presumably MakeIndex?) and in the preamble I see

% macro for italic page numbers in the index

\newcommand{\IndexDef}[1]{\textit{#1}}

My understanding is that there should also be an entry for GIF, which says
"see Image Formats" as a way of redirecting a reader.

I understood there should be an index entry for "image formats” (which appears
in your output correctly referring to p. 71), not for „GIF”.

Joel,

I cannot confirm your observation. I have the user guide in German and the
cross-reference command for GIF you are mentioning correctly creates a list
entry for “Grafikformate” (image formats). This is LyX 2.3.3 and Linux
(openSUSE).

Index "see..." Cross-reference Broken in User Guide

2019-12-10 Thread Joel Kulesza
Colleagues,

Has anyone else observed that the "See..." cross-references in the User
Guide index fail to render?

For example, using LyX 2.3.3 the "GIF|see{Image Formats}" in Section 4.4.1
of the User Guide does not make an entry for GIF or anything indicating
that something else should be seen.

I can also find no way to manually force the correct behavior. Perhaps
something in the underlying LaTeX functionality has changed? In addition
to fixing this, any ideas for a workaround are appreciated.

If this is confirmed with a bug, I will enter it into the tracker.

Thank you,
Joel

This doesn't answer your question, but the Outliner, Labels and
References, with the Sort checkbox set is an easy way to find BROKEN
refs. They cluster in a block near the top. Clicking on any one, jumps
straight to the ref in the document.

Looking at all the different AMS environments suggests it would be too
much for LyX to provide a different colour for each kind of ref, but
being able to customize the label colour would be good. (I can find
stdrefprefix.inc in the LyX Resources/layouts directory but nothing that
sets the appearance of ref labels.)

Thanks for the reply. I'm running LyX 2.1.4 from July 2015.

I added more text and indeed if the reference is on the same page, \vref
ommits the page mention completely, otherwise it might say previous page or
page #.
I was also unable to find the "official" documentation on \vref, I found it
for \ref and other markers though

This part of the tutorial is a bit misleading. The \vref command is
smart enough to know when the item it is referencing is on the same
page. In that case, it omits the "on page N" part. It looks to me as if
this has been fixed for the next release.

Cross-reference with /vref not mentioning the page in preview

2017-10-17 Thread Alexandru Guzu
Hello,

I am following the LyX tutorial and I am having some difficulties with the
Cross-referencing.

The tutorial says:
"
select the drop-down menu labeled “Format” and select “ on page
”. Then select “sec:About-This-Document” (it may be selected by
default), and a reference marker will appear containing “Ref+Text:
sec:About-This-Document”
...
In the printed document, this reference marker will be replaced with the
section number and then the page number.
"
However, this is not the case. The page number or any page reference is
nowhere to be found.

In fact the LaTeX code is as follows:

=

%% LyX 2.1.4 created this file. For more info, see http://www.lyx.org/.

%% Do not edit unless you really know what you are doing.

\documentclass[english]{article}

\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

\usepackage[latin9]{inputenc}

\usepackage{babel}

\usepackage{varioref}

\begin{document}

\section{About This Document\label{sec:About-This-Document}}

Sections and subsections are described below.

If you want to know more about this document, then see\\

Section \vref{sec:About-This-Document}, .

\end{document}

==

And the preview is:

==

1 About This Document

Sections and subsections are described below.
If you want to know more about this document, then see
Section 1, .

==

So there is no page reference. I used the same steps for the
example_raw.lyx but the result is the same. There is no page mentioned in
the output.

In fact, I don't see any difference between using /rev and using /vref.

Why is this happening?

Thanks,

Alex.

Short of modifying the source code, no, there's no way to customize
this. But you can of course patch the source for your own purposes if
you wish. The routine in question is Text::getPossibleLabel, in Text.cpp.

It probably would not be that hard to add preferences to control length
and what spaces get replaced with, though we're sometimes reluctant to
add too many preferences

LyX Cross-reference Label Default Content Inquiry

2017-08-28 Thread Joel Kulesza
Colleagues:

Is there a mechanism for modifying how Insert -> Labels are automatically
populated?

It appears to populate with the name of the associated entity, with spaces
changed to dashes, up to a certain character limit.

Can this character limit be raised? Can the space->dash conversion be
modified?

My ultimate goal is to provide more context in the labels themselves
(mostly through NOT truncating them). I usually just copy/paste the
associated information of the default label; however, it would be
convenient if something like this outcome could be made automatic. That
said, I'm glad the clickable UI element is truncated...

My apologies if such functionality is there and I've overlooked it (e.g.,
Section 6.1 of the User's Guide).

Thank you,
Joel

Handy trick if you need some junk filler text when testing something add
\usepackage{lipsum} to the latex preamble Document > Settings > Latex
Preamble
and you can stick a command like \lipsum[1-4] in ERT (know called Tex Code
Insert > Tex Code or ctl-L ) to insert 4 paragraphs of the famous "Lorem

Yes, thanks, that is helpful.

So your file looks like:

If you want to know more about this document, then see Section
[Ref+Text:sec:About-This-Document], which can be found on page.

This is exactly what the tutorial says to do, but it is obviously
ungrammatical. The "which can be found on page" part seems to be a
leftover from a previous version. I've removed it for the next release.
(Thanks!)

What happens with the "Ref+Text" type of cross-reference is that, if
that section began on a different page from the one the cross-reference
is on, then you will get something like "Section 2 on page 5" in the
output. If, as in your case, it is on the same page, you just get
"Section 2". This is a very cool aspect of how LaTeX works. It can
figure out for you whether you need to put a page number. It will even
do things like "Section 2 on the preceding page". Add some random text
before the cross-reference to force it to the next page, and you can see
for yourself.

If you actually did want it to read "which can be found on page 5", or
whatever, then you could make the first cross-reference just have the
format "" and then add another cross-reference after the word
"page". The label would be the same, but the format would be "".
Alternatively, you could remove the words "on page" and use the format
"On page ". Then you get as output "on page 5" or "on the
preceding page" or even "on the current page", depending. Try it.

Hi Sarah,

it would be nice to see the document you've created so far.
I'm not sure if I'm able to help - but others will be interested
in the example with your problem too.

Perhaps the tutorial is not the best here. If I insert a cross-
reference like you described it I get the text

"If you want to know more about this document, then see Section
*2 on the previous page*, which can be found on page."

in Preview. The phrase between the stars is the generated text
of the reference. Obviously the rest of the sentence is nonsense.

Stephan

Trouble with Cross-Reference

Section 3.4.2: Your first cross-reference. I have followed the steps
outlined in this section:

 * Applied the label "sec:About-This-Document" at the end of the title

 * Selected the label "sec:About-This-Document"

The reference label "Ref+Text: sec:About-This-Document" then appears
after the word "Section" in my text. However, when I view the .pdf file,
no page information is published. The sentence reads: "If you want to
know more about this document, then see Section 2, which can be found on

Why wouldn't you label the subequation that you specifically want to

Hi,

As far as I can remember there are multiple issues with refstyle:
1) Command name clash/override with the subfig package when using "sub:"
as label prefix for subsections.
2) References to headings below sections are not configured in the
refstyle.cfg file (TeX Live).

I attached my refstyle.cfg which handles German references to subsections
with the "ssec:" prefix.

The file should be located at "texmf/tex/latex/refstyle/".

Maybe this helps.

What you insert, is a cross reference to a label. (Not to the figure
itself.)

If the label is placed inside the caption for your (floating) figure,
then this will work as intended. The label will pick up the figure
number, and so any reference to that label will print the figure number.

If the label is placed inside the floating figure but outside the
caption, then it might refer to the chapter number instead. (Especially
if the label comes before the caption).

Generally, a "label" will look backwards in the text, and use the first
numbered entity it finds. That might be a figure caption, or a
chapter/section/subsection, or an enumeration.

So, put your label inside the caption, or immediately after the caption.
Then, the cross reference will print the figure number.

Cross-reference other LyX documents

2012-08-27 Thread Michael Bach

Dear LyX Users and Developers,

I am preparing slides for a lecture using the presentation (beamer)
class. Within that I would like to be able to reference labels inside my
lecture notes which is another LyX document.

There was a post on SE some months ago:
http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/39772/using-the-xr-package-in-lyx-for-cross-referencing-an-external-lyx-document

Breakdown: The OP went ahead and installed the xr package which can
reference labels in another-file.tex by using
\externaldocument{another-file}. This searches inside the .aux file
another-file.aux for the labels.

Now the question is: How to tell LyX to put intermediate files (or just
the aux) into the current working directory so that this will work?

Quick google just came up with this:
http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/19768/lyx-how-to-put-temporary-files-to-the-lyx-file-folder-for-truecrypt-compatibil

In which there is no solution. Any tips?

Try inserting the following into Document > Settings... > Local Layout:

ListName "List of Listings"

You will now be able to create floats of type "Listing" via Insert > Float >

a List of Listings. You are also free to change "Listing" to something else

Hello all,

I am struggling with
1.) default settings of program listings, and
2.) creating a cross-reference to (a) program listing(s)
in my document.
Unfortunately, the documentation did not shed any light on me...

I use the standard book template for my document.

1.) How to define 'default settings' for program listings?
Upon inserting a program listing, I am able to tweak the listing properties
through a right-click and adding / ticking the properties I want. It seems that
I cannot define personalised preferences.
And editing the properties for every program listing will be cumbersome (a lot
of work, as I am going to add a lot of program listings).

2.) How to cross reference a program listing
It seems that one cannot add a labe or define a label in the program listing
settings (adding a label={listing:somefancynameforlabel} ) also failed
miserably - did not show up in the reference list.

Thanks for any pointer in the right direction.

(having a document with both paper and responses as children) does not work
straighforwardly, as then the section numbers in the responses start from the
last section number in the paper + 1. Is there any other easy way to do what I
want?

Thanks

Keyboard shortcut for cross-reference

2011-12-03 Thread Hal Kierstead
I am using LyX 2.02 on Mac 10.6.8.

How do I make a keyboard shortcut for inserting a cross-reference? I asked
this a year or two ago and got very complicated answer that I have
unfortunately lost. In the mean time I had instead made a keyboard short cut
in OS X for the menu item, but this no longer seems to work in LyX 2.02.

In fact, each time I opened LyX, my old OS X keyboard short cut for the menu
item only worked after I first inserted a cross-reference using the mouse, but
I tolerated this peculiarity.

It seems that anything that you can do with a mouse click should be possible
from the keyboard.

Thanks,

Hal

Cross-reference in equation in lyx 2

2011-10-05 Thread David B
Hello,

In LyX pre-2.0 I was able to put a cross-reference to an equation inside a
formula, so that it would look something like in this image:
http://www.latex-community.org/forum/download/file.php?id=4130

If I try to do this in LyX 2.0 the reference ends up immediately above the
formula, but outside of it. Does anyone know how to put cross-references in
formulas in 2.0?

Best Regards,
David

Added this, but no change.
What I recognized is that formatted references (I use refstyle) are fine within
a one file document, i.e. added 'section'. But when I have child documents
included they appear as '??'

The reason for this is that LyX by default uses the prefix "sub" for
such references, as you create them, but neither prettyref nor refstyle

Anyway, you can deal with it two ways.

Thanks for the explanation.
IMO another solution would be that LyX by default uses 'sec' instead of 'sub'.

(i) Put a format declaration for "sub" references into your preamble.
How you do this depends upon whether you are using refstyle or
prettyref. (This is set under Document>Settings.) For prettyref, you can
do something like:
\newrefformat{sub}{Subsection \ref{#1}}
For refstyle:
\newref{sub}{refcmd={Subsection \ref{#1}}}
Of course, you can adapt these as you wish.

(ii) Modify what LyX uses for subsections. This is a matter of layout,
and can be done in a module, in local layout (under Document>Settings),
or wherever you wish:
Style Subsection
RefPrefix sec
End
The defaults are in the file stdrefprefix.inc. If you like, you can copy
the system file to your local layout directory (by default, on Linux,
~/.lyx/layouts/), modify it, and then LyX will use it instead of the
system one.

I tried local layout and stdrefprefix.inc (under Mac OS) but it didn't work
(still '??').
For the time being I don't use LyX 'formatted reference' and keep manually
writing 'section'.

Are you by any chance also using subfloats? i.e. floats within floats?
There is a incompatibility between the package used by LyX to do this,
and the refstyle package used for formatted references.

One way to do things like this -- not officially sanctioned, of course,
but worth a try, is to make one such change manually, then examine the
Lyx files in an editor (pre and post change) to see what the replacement
text is, and do a global search and replace (or, if you are good at
this, you can write a perl script or some such) on the file. Things
like this may or may not be possible to do within LyX, but may work in
an external editor.

Unfortunately, LyX 2.0 does not support this option. LyX 2.1 will. Until
then, you can either (a) do it in ERT, exactly as you suggest, or (b)

How to make formatted cross-reference capitalized in Lyx 2.0?

2011-06-27 Thread PG
Hi all,

Is there a way to make formatted reference in Lyx 2.0 capitalized?
Currently when I cross-reference to a subsection, it will produce Latex code
"\subref{xxx}", and the result will be "section X.Y". I'd like to make the
"section" capitalized, but I can't find the option or settings to. I think I can
do it by replacing the "\subref" with "\Subref" in Latex code, but does Lyx has
this option?

Thank in advance.

This would be possible in LaTeX, but a really general solution would be
difficult. If you want to try writing the LaTeX macros, then my idea
would be to use labels of the form:
pro:theprop
enu:1-pro:theprop
enu:2-pro:theprop
the point being that we can reconstruct the earlier label. I don't think
LaTeX normally knows that you are inside some construct you've already
labeled.

cross-reference to an enumerated item within a theorem

2011-05-30 Thread Ernesto Posse
Hi. Is there a way to do the following? Suppose I have a "Proposition"
environment and the text is something like this

Proposition 3 [pro:some-label] The following holds:
 1. [enu:item1] something
 2. [enu:item2] other

and later on I want references to show, for example as:

"... by Proposition 3(2)"

Currently I use a Formatted reference for the first part and an
un-formatted reference for the second:

"... by [Formatted ref: pro:some-label]([Ref: enu:item2])"

or in plain LaTeX (with prettyref)

"... by \prettyref{pro:some-label}(\ref{enu:item2})"

This is a bit cumbersome. Since enu:item2 is inside the Proposition
environment, would it be possible to infer the label pro:some-label
associated with that environment to create a format in prettyref so
that referring only to the individual item, so that it gives you the
full reference, i.e. something like

"... by [Formatted ref: enu-item2]"

yields

"... by Proposition 3(2)"

?

I found that your problem was not with cross-referencing but rather
with putting the § symbol in the cell or caption. A simple workaround
is to include this in your Preamble:

\DeclareMathOperator{\sect}{§}

Then you just type \sect in Math Mode.

cross-reference inside table

2011-02-18 Thread David Bickel
When I put cross-references to sections inside the cells or caption of
a floating table, I get error messages like the following:

Missing $ inserted.
Details and references & \protect \T
1\textsection \ref{sub:FWER-control...
...t \T1\textsection \ref{sub:FWER-control} &
\protect \T1\textsection ...

Extra }, or forgotten $.
I've deleted a group-closing symbol because it seems to be
spurious, as in `$x}$'. But perhaps the } is legitimate and
you forgot something else, as in `\hbox{$x}'. In such cases
the way to recover is to insert both the forgotten and the
deleted material, e.g., by typing `I$}'.

Any workaround or other help would be appreciated.

David

In this case I use prettyref. You can put space also additional text
if you like.

This is because there's not a simple LyX function for this. (The LyX

Assuming in what follows that Url: and Name: are the two fields and explaining

In docbook the inset is used as

Name:

The formats that I have available <=> result:

So none of them writes out the name of the section.

That's right. LyX can't do that right now.
