using Miede's classicthesis LyX2.3-v4.5 in openSUSE Leap

2019-03-06 Thread Michael Berger

Sorry Jürgen for addressing you this way.

I reported this to the LyX users list quite some time ago but got no
response at all. Nor could I find some help on Miede's website. Any hint
or advice from you?

Regards
Michael Berger

Dear friends of LyX,

having faced quite a number of heavy throwbacks when trying to use older
versions of Miede's classicthesis for linguistic theses I eventually
ended up using using LyX2.3-v4.5 in openSUSE Leap (this version is up to
now not yet available in Mageia 6)

It is self-explanatory that the linguistics module must be loaded.

After making some minor adjustments - most important activating some
fonts as per attached screenshot - I am enjoying this version's
extensive support (thanks to Jürgen Spitzmüller) in writing lingiustic
papers. Among other things inserting special characters in glosses by
simply copying them from tables using Insert >Special Character >
Symbols has become fun and on top all text style features available for
normal text are as well available in glosses.

However, there is one last thing that so far I fail to achieve despite
extensive search. I still can enter Insert > Marginal Note in the Lyx
master and all child documents but I see no marginal notes at all in the
PDF output. That is nothing really essential in my case but it might be
well for other people.

Best and thanks,

Michael Berger

no PDF when using classicthesis-LyX-v4.2_biblatex_biber / ..._biblatex_bibtex8

2017-08-15 Thread Michael Berger

Dear Lyxers,

my Linguistic Thesis at first written in classicthesis-LyX-v4.1 converts
to PDF in both versions of classicthesis-LyX-v4.2 but only after having
removed all letters used to typeset African Languages as shown in Table
7 of the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List by Scott Pakin.

While my Thesis successfully handles the languages Turkish, Indonesian,
Serbo-Croatian and Tamil it fails compilation to PDF as long as any of
the two African languages Asante-Twi and/or Limbum remains present.

This was tried with classicthesis-LyX-v4.2 and using two different
systems namely openSUSE Leap 14.2 and Mageia 6 - both do show the same
behavior.

The package fc is in place with all its elements (fclfont.sty,
fcuse.sty, t4cmr.fd, t4cmss.fd, fclfont.sty_old, t4cmtt.fd, t4enc.def,
t4fcr.fd and t4phonet.sty).

\usepackage[T4]{fontenc} is present in the preamble.

Using other document classes e. g. Koma-Script do compile without
problems as long as \usepackage[T4]{fontenc} is part of the preamble.

Am I doing something wrong or could it be that classicthesis-LyX-v4.2 is
not yet fit?

Any help or comment is highly appreciated.

Thanks and cheers!

Michael

Günter,

thanks for your comment and tips, I'm not giving up yet.

I experienced exactly the same in openSUSE Leap, first neither the
bibtex-version nor the biber-version worked until all in a sudden both
did out of the blue.

Obviously there are few people using Miede's thesis. It produces
beautiful documents - I use it for Linguistic papers.

If successful I will revert back to you.

Cheers and thanks again.

You may try in a terminal the commands `biber --help`

is).

Ultimatively, you should look for help with someone knowing Mageia and TeX

Hi Jürgen, hi Philip,

in openSUSE Leap 42.2 I've tried countless times to produce PDF outputs
with both, classicthesis-Lyx-v4.2_biblatex-biber and
classicthesis-Lyx-v4.2_biblatex-bibtex8 but always ended up in endless
loops.

After two weeks I tried openSUSE Leap 42.2 once more last night (out of
desperation and frustration) and to my surprise both, biblatex-biber and
biblatex-bibtex8, generated perfect PDF outputs - and very quickly.

In Documents > Settings > Bibliography > Bibliography Generation >
Processor it offers

 * Default
 * biber !
 * bibtex
 * bibtex8

while in Mageia6 'biber' is still missing.
So, looks like one must wait till "biber" is made available in Mageia6
and working.

Thanks a lot for your continuous support, and cheers!

Michael

you don't have biber installed, or the installation is corrupt.

What happens when you type

classicthesis-Lyx-4.2 problems with linguistic trees

2016-08-22 Thread Michael Berger

Hi,

I am using Texlive2016 and Lyx 2.2.0

Most of my documents are of type linguistics. I can produce and compile
documents of all Koma and other document classes; using all linguistic
modules and symbols pose no problem.

While writing glosses does work in

- classicthesis-Lyx-v4.2_biblatex_biber

- classicthesis-Lyx-v4.2_biblatex_bibtex8

- classicthesis-Lyx-v4.1_bugfix

I am rewarded heaps of Latex errors when trying to make trees .

Trying since days in desperation.

Is somebody out there experiencing the same problems or can perhaps one
of the developers explain/help?

Thanks and cheers,

Michael Berger

PS: of course I've made trees before in classicthesis-Lyx-v4.1

I was able to run the biber version of ClassicThesis on my laptop with
Kubuntu successfully. Since I will use this for my talk, I am set for
the time being. I might try later to get it working on may PC with Debian.

Thanks all who helped me.

Have you checked two simple examples from
http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex

Do they work? Do you have biber installed? All three engines (bibtex,
bibtex8, biber) work for me on linux, people had some issues with
biber on other OS.

Philipp,
I checked the http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex examples, both work.
So biber should work.
But classicthesis-LyX-v4.2_biblatex_biber does not produce the
References in the pdf output (the page stays empty) and gives no error

The classicthesis-LyX-v4.2_biblatex_bibtex example works and produces

standard LyX dialogs could be used for citation input, and bibliography
databases found during compilation. BibLaTeX is capable of employing
several backends for bibliography management; we provide two: biber, the
preferred and most capable one (but still immature and sometimes
glitchy), and bibtex8. If both fail for you, revert to the old
bibliography management with BibTeX.)

and followed this:
Test the template by opening and compiling ClassicThesis.lyx in this order:
1-classicthesis-LyX-v4.2_biblatex_biber/ (tested and worked with TeX
Live 2014 on Fedora Linux 22)
2-classicthesis-LyX-v4.2_biblatex_bibtex8/ (tested and worked with
MikTeX 2.9 on Windows as well)

3-classicthesis-LyX-v4.1_bugfix/
Note that this is the same template set up in three different ways - you
will be using only one of the folders.

Under Kubuntu (14. ) and using Lyx2.2.0 (of 23.5.2016)
I get the following errors:
1- csquotes.sty not found
2- csquotes.sty not found
3- mparlack.sty not found

Under Debian (GNU/Linux 8.4 (jessie) Release: 8.4) and using Lyx2.2.0
(of 23.5.2016) I get the following errors:

1- biblatex.sty not found
2- biblatex.sty not found
3- beramono.sty not found

What do I have to do to get it working (especially the one under Kubuntu)?
Could it be a texlive issue?

Try the "two simple examples" from http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex
to check whether biber or bibtex8 work for you.
LyX 2.2 will ease the use of biblatex, you might want to give it a try.

adding module 'csquotes' in classicthesis-LyX-v4.1 produced loss of documents

2016-02-27 Thread Michael Berger

Hi all,
after adding the module 'csquotes' and export to PDF my system started
an infinite loop. Before I realized what was gong on the process had
destroyed the child document involved. In another instance I even lost
the master document.

I had received no warnings whatsoever.

Jürgen Spitzmüller provided the following cure when using Miede's
classicthesis with an *early version* of the csquotes.module:

Open csquotes.module and look for

Preamble
\usepackage{etoolbox}
\AtEndPreamble{\usepackage{csquotes}}
EndPreamble

Then replace 'Preamble' by 'AddToPreamble'.

Save.

Good luck,
Michael Berger

PS: you will probably find the file csquotes.module in:
/usr/share/lyx/layouts/...

FYI the problem was that the csquotes module used

Preamble
...
EndPreamble

at top level, which overwrote classicthesis.layout's own preamble
additions.

Using AddPreamble instead solves the issue. See new module here:

All this makes absolutely no sense to me - could it be that the number

Good morning Philip,
I take your info on the First issue as very, very good news because I
was just about to throw the towel due to the new frustrating experience
I've made in the course of preparing a mini example file.

But let me report about this to you in a separate e-mail.
As for now, please see my comments below.

not when included in the master.

everything works again.
Hah! This is good news towards my problem as I was just about to go back
to KOMA-Script because in a master thesis one simply must be able to
underline some text parts.

And, of course, I will have all the patience in the world!

Second issue
Using Jürgen's nice and useful new modules like csquotes
(context-sensitive quotes) fail to work in classicthesis-LyX-v4.1, i. e.

quite a number of errors

I unfortunately cannot even test this as I don't see the module in my
modules list. But again, clashes are possible, not all (versions of)
packages work well with one another.
First, you should not bother too much about this for the time being.
Jürgen's new features are really great (especially for linguists and
work well in Koma-Script documents) but not a conditio sine qua non.
However, if you also plan to attend to this issue, you find the
necessary info here:

https://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/Modules
in "Extending LyX's functionality"

Now there is hope these problems may have been already resolved in the a
bug-fix version of the v4.1 template in the 4.2 bundle which you told
me. I will download the 4.2 version and then see to it.

I don't think the above issues were addressed in 4.2. I'd rather try
to remove (or comment out) calls to packages in
classicthesis-config.tex and see if that helps.
You can have the command "top" running in a terminal window. Once
pdflatex enters the loop (CPU usage 100%), just kill it with a 'k'
Yes, I agree. I downloaded and checked 4.2 and could not find any issue
related hint.

But thanks for telling me how to kill a running process, it was new to me!

I am deeply grateful to you and your colleague developers for investing
so much effort in other people's problems!

If you encounter data loss instances, a very good approach is to use
an automatic backup software like SpiderOak which keeps ALL historical
copies available to the user (or Dropbox which for free keeps only
30-days worth of historic copies). If something awry goes up, you have
a very recent backup handy.

Second, this sounds like a data loss bug affecting LyX. It would be
very helpful to the devels if you could come up with a very simple
example of master/child combination exhibiting the issue, and post it
here or on the bug tracker. See this:
http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/MinimalExample

The only way for our devels to see what's wrong is for you to provide
a simple self-contained example LyX file (see above). It is entirely
possible the issue happens on your system only, or only on your
platform, etc., so the devels can't replicate your issue. Otherwise
it's only guesswork...

Hi Philip,
I am really glad for offering help!
Very briefly, this is what 'bothers' and confuses me:
In support of my son who is studying linguistics I am working on a

All the papers before were written using document class in KOMA-Script

Then I started preparing my son's master thesis using Miede's very

At this point I want to thank Jürgen Spitzmüller who so very generously

The (author?) (year?) in your pdf is a result of using a BibTeX style
file (.bst file) which is incompatible with Natbib's author-year
citation engine. Unfortunately, the current situation is that there is
no indication in the LyX GUI on whether the choice of style you make is
actually compatible with your document settings.

I'm not sure I understand. When I used the classidthesis template there was a
child document dedicated to the bibliography. Why don't you try adding your bib
file there. And, again, the way to change formatting is via the bibtex style;
it has nothing to do with the bib file.

But I may be missing something -- I'm also a junior lyX user myself!

Hi again Manolo,

Unfortunately I am the only and (probably the first according my knowledge)
"insane" PhD student
that used LyX or other latex supports for writing his thesis...
...I indeed do not win a medal for that, but since I would be proud of the
results, I tried for LyX...

I just fitted some different styles for references adding my bib file into
the first chapter of classicthesis. In most of the cases I got this
situation:

...People interested (author?) [(year?)]only in the nice style
Provide (author?)(year?)students with.

Otherwise, if I clic the (author?) the file jumped to correct author
position in the bibliography at the end of the thesis.

may my bib file has something that don't work with classicthesis?

Really thanks for supporting me,

G.

If you are writing a doctoral dissertation, you may want to look how other
well-regarded dissertation from your department formatted references -- if
there are no official guidelines, that is -- and then try some .bst untl you
find one that looks like those. Or ask the LaTeX geek in your deparment; there
is probably one :)

As to how to change the citation style, it's done in LyX, not JabRef. Take a
look at the User's Guide, section 6.5

I am using the biochem style, but indeed I do not completely like it, also
because I would like the doi and/or the url would compare in the reference
list...

I would try the kluwer style as you wrote,
any others style that "sound" scientific to suggest me? How to add new
ones? (I am using jabref for the bib)

What is the style (the .bst) file you are using? That's what takes care of this
and other formatiing. I normally use the kluwer style, which does this kind of
author-year citations the way I need.

The problem seems that disappeared. I only delete the Child documents in
the main lyx file and I included them again and now the margins are
justified.
I do not know how it solves, but seems it's ok now!

You'll have to dig this one by yourself, I can't see how anyone here
could help you without the files you modified.

First, make a backup copy of all your files.

Then, copy Chapter03.lyx to Chapter05.lyx.
What's the output like now?

What does your Chapter05.lyx look like when you compile it separately?

Try playing a bit, shouldn't be hard to find out where the problem is.

As a last resort, upload all of your .lyx files (even better, a minimal
example) somewhere so that we can take a look at them.

Hi again,

I am using the lastest LYX port fo classictheis style...
I am in trouble with the realization of my thesis (time burning) and I got
this problem:

I added a new chapters the Chapter05.lyx trough the template.lyx file
present in the classicthesis package
but, after I compiled the ClassicThesis.lyx in the generated pdf the text
is centered and no more justified like it is in the latter Chapters...

How to fix this problem and add more chapters with a correct text spacing
in the pdf???

Thank you very much,

You don't have to put your title in the command \myTitle. Just insert it
where ever you need it (e.g. in Titlepage.lyx, DirtyTitlepage.lyx, etc)

In my case, wrapping works even with

but I suppose you need wrapping at some exact place.

Then you can split the whole title into a few lines like

\newcommand{\myTitleLine1}{A Classic Thesis Style\xspace}
\newcommand{\myTitleLine2}{an homage to\xspace}
\newcommand{\myTitleLine2}{The Elements of Typographic Style\xspace}

\newcommand{\myTitle}{\myTitleLine1 \myTitleLine2 \myTitleLine3}

It's not even a footnote, in a sense that the text points to it. If you

If you want to change it to something else, you'll have to change
classicthesis.sty, or to override (or copy) the responsible command in
