You need to be careful though. This applies to the modern thin wired keyboard
supplied by Apple. I hated this and replaced it with the old chunkier IMac
keyboard. This does not have an FN key and there is a help key instead where
the more modern FN key is placed.

same as VO Spacebar.
However on my setup at least control numpad 5 produces a mouse click. I cannot
honestly remember if I set this up or whether it comes by default.

I agree the concept needs more formal understanding on the Mac but it is
present in some form on all screen reading PC Platforms I think. so I think

If you are using Lion this is very easy.
Simply press VO command spacebar to toggle selection on and off on an item. .
VO cursor down to the next item you want to select and then press VOcommand
spacebar again.
VO will say added to selection and tell you the number of items you have
selected.
so on.

What I do is always use the Virtual Machine in full screen mode -control
command and enter. If I want to return to the Mac all I have to do is
press control command enter again and then command tab will take me away
from the Fusion Window.
