 Ever heard of a 240CD? I had one! It's a 300CD running on only 4
 cylinders.

If I'd had just a few more of the parts, I've long toyed
with the idea of putting the 95D motor in one of my generators.
(190D motor with one thrown rod, I'd take out the complementary
one to keep it balanced.)

It does appear to be a non-USA market car. When we went to 17 digits, the
VINs no longer began with the chassis number. Would WDB1260361A100119 be
a 126.036? I thought .036 was the 500SE, and that's a SEL in the pics.

Autocheck has the VIN in their public records database, but they can't
decode the VIN to tell you year, model, style, engine, or country of origin.

The P1800 is most definitely a car that tended to the 'so ugly it is cute'
side of things, unless it was properly cared for and had the appropriate
accessories - think of it as an average looking girl. Could be a 'dog' when
unkempt, a beauty when dressed up. I always liked them, probably because I
liked the TV show.

To continue talking to myself on this thread -- I decided that maybe
the little tabs on the retaining disc were bent, just enough to not
engage the lip on the pipe adapter. I gently hammered the tabs, and
either they WERE bent a little, or the hammering flattened and
elongated them enough to engage and hold the spring in place.

I'm not sure how long this will last, but I can at least wait until I
have enough other parts needs to get an order together.

The VIN is for a German-market 500SE finished in 737 classicweiß with a
black leather interior, though that is clearly a LWB car. It sure looks
like a US-spec car in slightly different livery.

I don't know why we're dissecting it like this, though. The seller
clearly states that The owner has spoken to Mercedes in Germany and
this car was German manufactured by Mercedes. It is an extremely rare
car, they say only a few were made as original 1000SEL's. So there you
have it. Case closed!

You should also watch the compressor when first starting the ACC up
-- if the compressor runs a few seconds and kicks out, you are not
getting a good speed signal from the compressor to the KLIMA relay,
and it will shut of the compressor until you do a power cycle. This
 can be quite annoying.

Finally, you need to jumper the #5 and #7 (I think, will check
tonight) sockets in the KLIMA relay socket with a large wire -- this
directly engages the compressor. If it then runs and cools properly,
you have a problem with the KLIMA relay. There are a series of
checks there, but no need to get all exited unless the compressor
ground signal is good and you don't have engagement.

Also check the fuse -- a bad clutch coil will blow the climate
 control fuse.

Far too likely to have to vacate from the smell of dead varmint with that
stuff. I had the soffit vents covered with wire mesh all the way around the
house and ended up trapping a few in the attic. Got most of them out by
leaving a corner open for a few hours, but one or two would not leave. I
heard them climbing down inside the walls to get to the water in the sump
pump that drains the AC air handler, then they went down inside the outside
walls [cinder block with cocina] and tunneled out by the AC units. A bag of
cement discouraged reentry that way, and we have been varmint free for a
couple of months. Mom came out yesterday and told me she was getting an
awful racket out of her chimney [also covered with wire mesh], so I assume
they are trying another assault on the attic. Good recipes for squirrel? A
few hundred $$ later I have had it with those pests.

Don't recall which was a higher rpm. If you were stopped at a light

 transmission.

Re: [MBZ] ahh the 1000SEL

2008-06-18 Thread Chuck Landenberger
Hi all,

Here is a reply from John Olson, SL Market Letter editor to my query
concerning a purported 1000SEL on eBay.

Take care,

Chuck
~~
Daimler-Benz never built or sold a car called a 1000 SEL. In my
opinion this offering should be pulled from E-bay, by E-bay, for
gross errors in presentation. There was a car called a 1000 SEL
marketed in Germany by a aftermarket modifier, I believe it was
called Styling Garage. Their 1000 SEL was extrapolated from a long
wheel base S-Class sedan -- I have an elaborate mid-1980s sales
brochure from the Styling Garage in my archives featuring a 1000 SEL
with widened body, conspicuous spoilers and side skirts, and
elaborate interior, TV in the front and back seats, leather dash and
headliner, and totally unique upholstery pattern. The Styling Garage
prospered for a bout five years selling cars to Middle-Eastern oil
sheiks after the first oil shortage/crisis. It was possible to get
faster motors but the Styling Garage and other similar companies were
infamous for extreme interiors and controversial fiberglass body
appendages. Some of them wore this exact sale 1000 SEL nomenclature
on their trunks.

The only part of this E-bay offerings that I can see that appears to
be a genuine aftermarket part is the 1000 SEL trunk label. The
car may be an early 1986 model (first titled in 1985) with 1986
side-moldings and allow wheels. Everything else about it looks like a
normal, 1985 gray-market short wheelbase 500SE. The seller claims the
the car has a 5.6 liter V8 but offers a 126-036 chassis number
indicating a short wheel base (SE) 5.0 liter V8. A 560 SEL would have
a 126-039 VIN. The 560 SE would be 126-038.

You are welcome to forward this e-mail to anyone in the club asking
about this E-bay car.

Good luck with that. Folks who do decent work should do OK, but so many
[like the guy I bought my house from] do half-assed jobs. Always a real
stretch to get a business to be making a profit, so if you are near there
you are doing OK.

Re: [MBZ] '86 SDL no a/c

2008-06-18 Thread dave walton
Only way I know to tell if the pressure switch is working is to
measure its continuity while measuring the pressure. It's standard
procedure to check it after adding refrigerant. All the ones I've seen
are closed (zero ohms) with pressure in the system. If one of the
wires falls of its better to shut off the system rather than risk
running the compressor without oil flowing through the pipes. It's not
something you want to bypass long term. Getting metal fragments out of
the system from a blown compressor is a real PITA - not to mention the
pain of buying a new compressor.

The switch should close at ~ 30 psi, and then open again at ~ 400PSI.
The high pressure open protects against a system freeze up - I've
never tested it. It depends on temperature, but you should see
something like 200-250psi on the high side and 40-50psi on the low
side once the system has been operating for a few minutes - assuming
you use R134a.

Here is a chart if you want to be more precise:
http://www.ackits.com/aacf/ptchart.cfm

As you are adding vapor to the low side, you will see a sweet spot
where the low pressure climbs and the high pressure remains the same.
That usually means I'm close to optimal.

How can I tell if the low pressure switch is good? The system has full
charge from Monday morning (I hope it hasn't leaked out by now...)

First, check for voltage at the low pressure switch on the reciever/
dryer. This is the one with spade lugs and push-on connectors. If
you have voltage (12V or more) to ground, the pushbutton unit is not
switching the compressor on. Jumper them together with the engine
running and the ACC on -- if the compressor runs, either it's already
low on charge or the switch is bad. If there is no voltage and it
doesn't run jumpered, time to check ou the KLIMA relay, it's not
 switching on.

If you open a receiver/dryer without installing it in
a closed system within 4 hours (dependent on ambient
temperature and humidity) the dessicant properties of
the receiver/dryer will be exhausted.

Or so an automotive AC guy once told me. Makes sense

Absorbent desiccants cannot be reused. Adsorbent ones can. Most use
XH-5, XH-7 or XH-9, all of which can be at least partially restored by
pulling a vacuum on the system. They are made from sodium and/or
potassium aluminosilicate which physically traps water molecules
rather than chemically combining with them.

We always ate what was killed or caught, though. I used to fish off the
keys with my FIL. Best fisherman I ever saw, and was the man came up with
the idea for the fighting chair and some other stuff. He was the exclusive
furniture supplier for Chris-Craft for many years. He had the fish cleaning
job down to a science, and any attempt to help was just a bother. Fun to
watch him, though. I think mom still has one or two Pompanette fillet

All 3. XH-7 and XH-9 are used by most R134a systems. XH-5 is used for
R12. It's relatively cheap stuff. Also safer than having exothermic

under the right conditions - when under pressure in the presence of
oxygen.

.22 or .175(7?)? My dad used to have a wicked pump 22 pellet gun
accurate and one pump was great for scaring squirrels out of the feeder,
3 pumps and they were dead.

Re: [MBZ] '86 SDL no a/c

2008-06-18 Thread OK Don
I believe that the coolant sensor for the ACC is in a dual element
sensor on the engine - one set of pins for the ACC, the other for the
idle control. The AC on my SDL would turn off the compressor as soon
as the coolant hit 80C - the PO had reversed the sets of wires on that
sensor. The AC worked great after I switched those two plugs.

OK, test results are all normal except for the following:

Vacuum flaps, pin 8 (short DEF Flap)=1k ohms

Maybe I have a bad (hopefully unplugged) coolant sensor.

To those who might be renting a car!

Some rental car companies are now charging $8.00 a gallon if you
don't top up the tank before returning the car.

Be warned!  Do not turn a rental car in without topping up or having
a front end deal with a defined price per gallon!

Take care,

Dad and I were at the range one time and a couple old fellers were there with
their .45s.
One of the guys had Parkinsons so bad he had to put the pistol and the magazine
on the table and slowly slide them together...
We all backed away when he brought that pistol up to shoot but it was amazing,
as he brought the gun up all sign of the tremor ceased and he was just as
steady as a rock. He then proceeded to shoot different handloads through a
chronograph. This was a window chrono so he had to keep all his shots to about
a 4 window or he'd have blown his chrono apart.
When he first went for a mag change I offered to help which he greatly
appreciated. I spent most of a day with him, changing mags and refilling them.
He shot about 300 rounds all of which would have taken up no more space than
the bottom of a soda can...

Re: [MBZ] '86 SDL no a/c

2008-06-18 Thread Bill R
Luther - Like Kaleb said, I would be certain that you have a source of
medical insurance and retirement. You are into fairly high risk activity,
so even a disability policy would be a good idea. Get back to me if you
think you are going to need it. I fought with my disability company for
three years prior to a settlement. There are some things you will need to
know. SSD is pretty poor also. Had I not had a private pension [very safe
- all funds already in the bank for my full lifetime pension] I would be in
bad shape now. I didn't worry too much about healthcare when I was younger,
now we would be spending about $1,200 - $2,000/month for MD's, cardiac
procedures and Rx if I didn't have very good insurance. We will have out of
pocket of about $1,500 this year instead. If you can make huge $$$ doing
home repair and can put enough away for retirement and will not ever get
sick or injured, then insurance won't matter too much. Seems to me you said
you were single. You could always do what I did and marry someone who has
great family insurance through her work.

having that insurance is very nice, along with the 401k etc.

Mine
 is
back to working correctly after a month of problems, but if it lasts the
summer I think I had better have it done next winter.

Re: [MBZ] '86 SDL no a/c

2008-06-18 Thread Peter Frederick
The pusbutton unit provides the ground for the signal -- it must have
12V on it with the ignition on. If not, you have a wiring problem,
usually a broken wire at the socket.

That's why I suggested testing voltage to ground at the pressure cut-
out switch.

To jump a few posts, check the wires on the temperature sensor (may
be in the upper radiator hose fitting OR lower down mid-block, it was
moved at some point). The wires break, and the PBCU will think the
coolant is about -50F with infinite resistance! One wire was busted
on mine.

Also check the resistance of the temperature sensors for the cabin,
evaporator, and heat exchanger. An open sensor at any one of them
will likely keep the compressor off, as no cooling is required OR the
evaporator is too cold.
