Re: [MBZ] a/c no worky
As a first guess, I'd say that the windings on the compressor clutch magnet might be shorted (at least partially). You could get the pulley/clutch assembly off a salvage yard car and try it. Parts out in the moving/vibrating/oil-covered/dirty end of things experience failures. Clutch coils, wires and connectors to the same, etc. Look over that stuff carefully, from the clutch on back (through pressure switch, etc.) Or it could be the horn, or anything else sharing the fuse. The trick is to diagnose what blows it. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Bore measurements on 140 SD
I did it at 180,000 miles. Just replaced the one rod. I now attribute the bent rod to hydrolock in that cylinder due to failure of the head gasket that allowed oil to enter the cylinder (oil-lock?). Given that the piston protrudes from the head when at the top of it's stroke and compress everything down to less than the thickness of the head gasket, just a bit of oil seeping in could really mess things up. At first I thought I had a turbo failure. If I had pulled the head right away rather than screwing around with the turbo, it probably would have been fine. I played around with a dial indicator to try to measure roundness, but did not detect anything significant. That was probably due to a combination of user-error and cheap tools. All the cross hatches looked fine. The guy that told me about replacing #1 and #6 was a tech at a GM dealership. 50/50 chance he was full of it. -Dave Walton On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 7:21 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin ka...@striplin.net wrote: Did you replace number one and number 6? Or just 1? Were your cylinders ovalled at all? How many miles were on the engine? Maybe I caught mine in time before it really trashed the bottom end. dave walton wrote: The replacement rod did not have tabs to allow easy weight adjustment. It is significantly heaver than the original. I've since been told that as long as #1 and #6 are balanced, it's okay if they are heaver than the others. I'd want to very that somehow, but replacing the two rods would save some grief. The dealer said if they did the job, they would replace all the rods. I was not in the mood to spend $1k to replace good parts at the time. But you could probably recoup some of your investment selling the good old ones on eBay :-) Once the rod was replaced, the piston extended above the block like all the others. Put some bar stock on the block across the cylinder opening. Use 2 magnetic bases. Mount the dial gauge between them on a crosspiece. Set the gauge to zero on top of the bar in the middle. Highest reading when the crank is rotated gives you a comparison number which relates to connecting rod length. -Dave Walton On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 10:41 AM, dave walton walton.d...@gmail.com wrote: I did not see any way to drop the oil pan with the engine in the car. The front frame is directly under where you want to get to and can't be removed (without a torch or plasma cutter). If anyone knows how to avoid pulling the engine, please speak up. Once you get the oil pan off you can access the lower end of the connecting rod to replace it without pulling the crank. The transmission and engine come out as a unit. You will need a 2-ton shop crane. To access the center of gravity of the engine/transmission unit you need to extend the arm to it's maximum. The lift capacity goes down as the arm length goes up. Even with the Harbor Freight 2-ton crane maxed, the lift cylinder wanted to hit against the front bumper. If I had to do it again, I'd use a gantry crane on wheels. I was quoted $140 from the dealer for the replacement rod. They charged me $190 when it came in. -Dave Walton On Mon, Oct 12, 2009 at 9:55 AM, Kaleb C. Striplin ka...@striplin.net wrote: If I wanted to replace that one rod, I would have to pull the crank and everything wouldnt I? Seems to me what you describe is in the neighborhood of 0.010 inch or so, (maybe more) and that is a problem. I concur. If five pistons stand proud of the block, and one piston is recessed, and you can detect that by feel, there's something wrong with that one cylinder. When you add to that the fact that the most worn cylinder is the same one with the short rod, and it's the cylinder that's famous for bending its rod, I'd say replace that rod and hope you caught it quick enough so that cylinder still seals ok. If one cylinder out of six makes 95% of the power of the others, the engine as a whole shouldn't run too badly. Chief difficulties are access to the top bolt and dropping the lower hexhead into the frame while installing. Loosen top and bottom bolts -- on the diesel, the right side is a pain since the mount is under the turbo and is only accessable from underneath with a flex-head ratchet, and it's usually also stuck. Lower bolts require dropping the lower sound encapsulation panel (usually one piece on the gassers, two on the diesel, and both have to come out). Jack engine, remove both bolts and remove heat shield and mount. New mount will usually be somewhat taller than the old one, so jack the engine some more. Mounts are keyed into the engine carrier. Start bottom bolt first, then top bolt. Helps to leave some slack so you can move then around, and it's usually easier to get both bolts started while underneath. This is required on the W201 as you cannot access the top bolt from above. Screw bottom bolt up lightely, lower jack, tighten both bolts fully. Remember to put the heat shield back where it was. On the gasser, you may have to remove the bottom bolt on the left side and jack the engine up quite a bit to reach the top bolt, as it's under the intake and when the mounts are really flat, it's quite difficult to get a wrench on it, even with a 2' extension! Fairly easy to reach when new. Easy to check condition, too -- if there is less than 3/4 inch or so between the bottom of the hemispherical part's lower edge and the frame, or you find thick fluid leaking out, they are shot. I changed the ATF 20k miles ago, put in M1 ATF then, and transmission behavior gradually improved over the first 10k miles. Is this sediment a sign of pending death, normal, or the result of the M1 cleaning action? Shifting is back to normal now. The 1-2 shift at WOT is the only fault, it always happens early at 3500 RPM. Shifts are a little soft by MB standards, I may try to firm them up. Very respectfully, /s/ LCDR Max Dillon '87 300TD 315k miles Charleston SC -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Apparently, Snow Leopard (aka Mac OS X 10.6) has a habit of wiping out home directories when a user logs in to a Guest account following an upgrade from Apple's previous operating system: just Leopard (aka Mac OS X 10.5). Re: [MBZ] a/c no worky
You could probably do that from the power line to the horn (disconnect it first) and see if you are getting a low resistance without pushing the horn, then push the horn and see if you get a change in resistance, then switch to volts and see if you are getting any voltage to the horn (which might be less than 12V if it is shorting out). --R Karl Wittnebel wrote: The problem seems to be directly related to the use of the A/C. (an honest-to-God German scientist) retired a while back from Nasa Ames and many years ago when I was visiting family in San Mateo, he invited me down to Ames for a tour. We walked through the gigantic wind tunnel there, a huge rectangle with giant fans to move the air. I was a little reticent to walk through, thinking about somehow the fans starting up and me coming out the other side as just so much Norwegian sliced herring. Didn't happen. I also got a short ride in their centrifuge and lasted maybe five minutes before I felt like my innards were going to extrude through various bodily openings. tyler wrote: What is the factory rated towing capacity? In Europe it's 750kg without trailer brakes, 2100kg with. Sedans are 1500kg with brakes. In the US... 0 kg. No chassis/brake/driveline differences that anybody knows about so I would roll with the European ratings. Does anyone know if a W124 wagon (1987 300TD) can safely tow a 3500lb trailer? According to the factory ratings... yes. Just make sure that you have a factory style hitch that also has the same ratings. They show up occasionally on eBay or various forums Also keep in mind that the tongue weight is only 75kg! Would the transmission be up to it if a larger cooler was added? Could the engine cooling system keep up with such a load? I'd say it is a requirement!! They already have a transmission cooler built into the radiator, but the euro wagons with the towing package removed the transmission cooler from the radiator. Presumably so the cooling system didn't have the extra load of the transmission so it could keep up with the increased load of the engine. I'm also assuming an external transmission cooler was added at the same time. All this being said, I've only researched this and not actually driven with a trailer on my wagon. I've got a factory hitch waiting to be installed, but there are other more pressing matters I'm taking care of first You know how that goes I'm sure! ;) My $.02 John ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] 220D no start
I spent the rest of the day poking, yanking and swearing at the cable. Got it moved back, forward, right, left and inside out. I think the cable is too short to do all three functions. I can get the thing long enough to start, but it will not shut off, or it will be long enough to shut off, but not long enough to get the starter to engage. Figure I will just let the clutch be the stop pedal. clay On Oct 11, 2009, at 4:30 PM, Jim Cathey wrote: I found out the cable was off, and proceeded to hook it back to the IP and now it is not willing to start when the knob gets pulled. It will go to glow, but I am not able to pull it further so that it engages the start circuit. That cable is adjustable, in some manner. You need to adjust it so that it has enough travel to hit the starter contacts. What would work better would be a simple manual glow switch, and a push to start button. Probably pain in the rear to figure out the way to cut into the circuits. Yeah, they combined all three systems on one easy-to-use knob. Until it breaks, then it's a PITA. But if you fix it right you can go back to your nearly-unstealable stealth ignition system. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] 220D no start
Thanks Craig, I drug out the shop manuals and the chiltons to peruse over beers. No good answers on just what the correct adjustment is. I suspect it needs the cable to be new. The old one lost the lead knot on the end that would have been right. I have it bent over to lock it to the slide mechanism clay On Oct 11, 2009, at 4:42 PM, Craig McCluskey wrote: On Sun, 11 Oct 2009 16:30:42 -0700 Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net wrote: That cable is adjustable, in some manner. With the dash knob pushed all the way in, the cable has to push on the injection pump lever to stop the engine. With the dash knob in the released position, the pin on the injection pump lever should be somewhere in the slot on the fitting on the end of the start cable. With the dash knob in the start position, the pin on the injection pump should be against the front end of the slot on the fitting on the end of the start cable and pulled a little more back than its normal operating position. This causes the injection pump to put out more fuel so the starting is easier. It's indeed possible to correctly adjust the cable. When it's correctly adjusted, everything works as designed. If this isn't enough information, I can look through my 1973 Chilton's and see if it has more. I may even scan the pages, but later, because I don't have time right now. Re: [MBZ] W124 Motor Mounts Related Problems
Hi Gang - I ended up taking my 91 300D to the local MB dealer - as in the pas they have provided spectacular service. I had them confirm the condition of my motor mounts - as suggested by those on the list, one MM was partially collapsed. Fortunately, only the drivers side needs to be replaced - which I'll do as soon as I get some parts from Rusty. Additionally, they tell me the Injector Seals are leaking - not internal seals but the O-Ring and copper washer that fits inside the line where it exits the IP - so the IP doesn't need to be replaced - only the metal injector lines need to come off and a fitting inside the IP removed from each injector exit port. I plan to do it myself and from what little I've seen it doesn't look too bad. Don't know how I would have found these seals were bad! They tell me the seals leak internally cause the problem I described - rough idle at idle after fully warmed up. So it sounds like a combination of the IP seals and the MM. We'll soon see how accurate they are. ;-) They also told me one of my Tie Rod end seals is damaged and the grease is gone. But they didn't try to suggest I let them do the repairs. Which I liked. I replaced both Tie Rod Assys. last year IIRC so I was surprised to hear a grease boot had failed. Anyway, I'll look in my records to see when I replaced them and go from there - again - no problems. All this is FYI in case you are experiencing similar symptoms. LarryT 91 300D Does your business accept or need to accept V/MC/AE/Dis? We have the best rates 0% Interest Business loans. I'd like to put one of these fans on my 66 MGB but I think I'll wait for those evil rich people to buy and try them - that'll eventually push the price down into the reasonable range! ;-) It'd be nice to get rid of the fan blade! [MBZ] More MB boards?
Hey gang, I'm still searching (high and low) for a replacement diff for my '85 190D 2.2l. Cama says almost nobody rebuilds them since the tools are spendy and the replacement I put in hasn't worked out (its lounder than the one it replaced). The only options remaining on car-part.com are very expensive (one was $450). So I put a post on Peachparts and a guy has one for a good price but its 3.23 ratio as opposed to the 3.42 thats in it... I'm worried about getting into a Jim Cathey situation where I lose all my low end. The Peachparts crowd is all about taller gears for better fuel economy but I'm not sure I believe thats gonna happen... So, does anybody else know of free boards (like Peachparts or here) where I can post looking for a new diff? Alternately if anybody spots one in a boneyard pick it up and I'll reward you for your time. -Curt -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Hi Tyler,John gives excellent information... I just installed a factory-like euro hitch on my 95 E320 wagon, with rated 2100kg load. Thats 4600lbs! I'm still searching for my towable toy (a sailboat), but I'm looking at for 3500lbs as my maximum. Its quite a bit of weight. In preparation for towing that weight, I've already gone over my brakes (ended up replacing just about everything) and changing my trans fluid and filter. My cooling system is in good shape, with a recent radiator. My only concern is the car's ability to pull the boat and trailer up a launch ramp. With some preventative maintenance, common sense, and good trailer brakes, I think you'll be fine. I sure as hell would not want to try it. tyler wrote: Does anyone know if a W124 wagon (1987 300TD) can safely tow a 3500lb trailer? Would the transmission be up to it if a larger cooler was added? Could the engine cooling system keep up with such a load? What is the factory rated towing capacity? Re: [MBZ] Anyone tow with a W124 wagon?
My only concern is the car's ability to pull the boat and trailer up a launch ramp. And a very real concern it should be, too. As that trailer rocks back on the ramp it'll tend to lift the rear wheels off the ground. My son and I got a free ride down an embankment due to that factor. You'd want a lot of extra weight in the back of the wagon, I'd think. Stupid trailer trick story: http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/moglog.html#trailer If the ramp was wet and/or slimy, even worse. It's easy enough in a 4wd truck that outweighs the towed load by 2x, else maybe oh-oh!
Re: [MBZ] More MB boards?
So I put a post on Peachparts and a guy has one for a good price but its 3.23 ratio as opposed to the 3.42 thats in it... I'm worried about getting into a Jim Cathey situation where I lose all my low end. The Peachparts crowd is all about taller gears for better fuel economy but I'm not sure I believe thats gonna happen... Balls. These diesels don't react to RPM like gassers do. Witness all our 123's, etc., driving around town in S rather than D, yet not getting any worse mileage while doing so.
Re: [MBZ] W124 Motor Mounts Related Problems
Larry wrote: Additionally, they tell me the Injector Seals are leaking - not internal seals but the O-Ring and copper washer that fits inside the line where it exits the IP - so the IP doesn't need to be replaced - only the metal injector lines need to come off and a fitting inside the IP removed from each injector exit port. I plan to do it myself and from what little I've seen it doesn't look too bad. Don't know how I would have found these seals were bad! They tell me the seals leak internally cause the problem I described - rough idle at idle after fully warmed up. Boy, this messes with my mind. How can one determine that a delivery valve has an internal leak? I could understand if they had looked at the parts and found some wear but that would have required a tear down. IMHO, if you go in there for any reason, you should replace the o-rings, seals and springs, perform the three step torque procedure and hope for the best. Anyone know how they do that?
