Thanks... meant to type "Sipes" .. somehow it came out "snipes" ... I stand
corrected...

I don't actually hunt snipes.. I only organize the hunts for visiting city

Re: [MBZ] Great Leap Forward

2018-04-10 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
These days, I look for something rated AA 400 or better. AB 300 is
probably the lowest grade acceptable for a Dissel.

I think AA is roughly equivalent to an H rated yuro tar. And AB is
roughly equivalent to an S rated yuro tar.

I have thus far avoided kumho and han kook tars because of quality
concerns. (and who wants a tar made by any kook?) Tars made in yurp
are the best. After that, I tend to go for Made in USA, although the
record for Made in USA radial tars is not good. badly out of balance,
prone to slip belts, poor wet or schnee/eis traction, etc.The only
slipped belts I've ever had in yurpeen tars is frog michelins in the
early 70s. I ran yurpeen tars on MB, Frod van, Plymouth Valiant,
datsoon? Peekup, etc, with no problems.

Nokians were less than gripping on the w220. Maybe they are better near

Back when Rusty was in the process of selling out and closing his business, I
ordered 2 Bilstein regular duty shocks. He send me 2 Bilstein HD shocks.
I installed them on the rear anyway and the ride was the same as yours.
Now I need 2 for the front and I'm wondering if the regulars on the front will
play nice with the HD's on the back, or if I should get HD's for the front as
well?

Another way to improve and LED lantern would be to fill it with water - use
glue or tape if needed to keep the water in, then shoot it with something
like a .30-06. This works a treat with things like empty beer cans . . .

Re: [MBZ] OT Airlines: Why de do dat?

2018-04-10 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I used to do this a lot when I flew for business, as you would often get
screwed flying into airports that were hubs, such as Minneapolis or SFO. I
could fly from MKE to SEA via MSP for maybe $300. To fly to from MKE to MSP
might be $500+.

We would often book trips that overlapped to do this when our schedules
permitted it. Otherwise, if you booked a round trip and terminated before your
destination a lot of airlines will cancel the whole itinerary. Of course,
you’ve got to carry on your baggage as someone mentioned previously.

If you know how you can fly “open jaw”. It’s not that hard to do, but most
ticket booking sites don’t support it. You can use Google’s ITA matrix to do
it. Hipmunk will let you do stuff like this, too.

It takes some effort to use these tools to find the cheapest route, but 20-30
minutes of messing around with various combinations can often yield some pretty
good deals.

What happens more often is that its cheaper to fly to a layover spot without
making the next leg. So say for instance I really wanted to go to Charlotte,
sometimes its cheaper to book a flight to Miami through Charlotte than it is to
go to Charlotte. So people just stop at the mid-point. Obviously you can only

If I try to book the flight from Charlotte, and skip the jump from MIA to

I wonder what would happen if we just show up in CLT on the travel day, and

Re: [MBZ] Video fun times

2018-04-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Heh, I LIKE it.
For the next one I intend to "convert" to kerosene which is a thing lots of
guys do to whitegas lanterns because kero is generally cheaper than whitegas.
Thing is we'll need a filler port, so drill a hole in the plastic body so we
can add kerosene. Then kerosene requires preheat so I'll have to drill a hole
in the top part to add alcohol to preheat. Of course theres no lighting port
but since the "globe" is plastic I can just burn through that with the torch...
Should be fun times, I'll be sure to have my safety squints engaged...

[MBZ] OT Airlines: Why de do dat?

2018-04-10 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Just booked a set of tix to go to Italy later this year. Tix were $573,
flying from Miami FL to Rome, with a layover in Charlotte each way.

Flights are all on AA.

Miami is about a ten-hour drive from my house. Charlotte is about five
hours.

If I try to book the flight from Charlotte, and skip the jump from MIA to
CLT, the cost of the tix is about 3x.

I wonder what would happen if we just show up in CLT on the travel day, and
try to get on the second leg from CLT to FCO? AA will probably pitch a fit
and deny boarding.

You can jumper the socket after removing the relay and see if applying
direct power will energize the pump.  I forget which holes work the
magic but you can find that somewhere.

People seem to get caught buying the HD Bilsteins from time to time. I got a
set for my former 300SD and hated them. They were so hard you could feel every
little bump/crack/rock in the road. In a car that was more of a high
performance sort of vehicle I could see it, but not in an S class.

Knowing what I do now I always go for the standard Bilstein. On a related
note, a dealer tech I know says that rear shocks rarely ever wear out. He said
of all the (stock/original) rear shocks he’s replaced over 20+ years he’s
hardly ever found a set that warranted replacement.

I hear that when Pirellis go flat they go WOPWOPWOP

I thought the tires on the girl's car were not that old, they had a lot
of good tread.  There was a receipt in the package with the car, I
thought they might have been fairly new but she says the only receipt
was from 2006 and the tires looked like they were dry rotting, so maybe
they were old and things were letting go. Costco had told her they could
get her in 2 days later so she went to some local tar shop and got some
Goodyears or something.  She's happy, they were a bit cheaper than the
Costco Bridgestones on sale, so I guess all is good.

Ugh, Monroe's ride like you welded the rod to the cylinder, avoid them at all
costs (and they are valved like American shocks, too). Had a pair on the rear
of my 280, replaced them with a set of Bilsteins from a '65 out of the junk
yard. Vastly better.

Hold out for the real ones, aftermarket will be worse than what is on there.

Glad you’re able to keep it from going up in flames. You can’t imagine the
number of 74 and 75 MY cars I saw down here that burst into flames because all
the rubber bits deteriorated from the under hood temperatures. It used to be
fairly common, even more so in this area because the climate accelerated the
issues.

Keep an eye out on Rock Auto. Maybe they’ll have a closeout on some Bilstein
or Sachs shocks for it. Currently they have Monroes for $33/each for the rear….

Rear axle damage + curb means someone pulled a "blues brothers" and slid
sideways into a curb? Probably ruined the wheel carrier plus more.
