is gpupdate /all to update all policies.

While the *use* of Windows 10 isn't that different from 7, and as an OS is
fairly stable and complete, I have to stress on forcing the thing out of
auto-update mode. I have come home to one system running 10 that was doing
a compile, only to find out it had failed because the system had rebooted
right in the middle of a job. A POS system with a non-profit I help out at
once couldn't do work for an hour and a half as it booted, said it needed
updates, then forcibly rebooted without any concern to the business it
just

took down. Microsoft has gone the wrong direction on this one, and has
forgotten that this system is *my* system. I do not lease it from
Microsoft, I do not have a Desktop as a Service. I have systems I need to
run when I have work I need to do.

Application wise, however, I haven't found anything third-party that
refuses to run outright. To the underlying software it isn't that
different

from 8, relatively speaking, so if it runs on 8 it should run on 10. My
game system is currently running 10.

Dunno, you may be able to buy a new or used motherboard, depending on
how popular the machine was. I got a board level repair for $200, but
that makes no sense if the laptop was a $300 wally land special pentium
when it was new.

Find a computer shop that will replace the machine if they can't return
it to you in working condition. Pay em for doing the bios update. It
can't cost that much.

Bricking a machine due to a failed BIOS update won’t affect the data stored on
it, you can just take the hard drive out and put it on anything else and get
the data. It hoses the BIOS EEPROM and you can’t boot the machine again. In a
desktop where you could pull the BIOS chip out and replace it you could
recover, but in a laptop where the BIOS chip is soldered to the motherboard
you’re pretty much screwed.

2016-12-22 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Randy,
Go to support for whatever computer you have and check for any needed updates,
especially the BIOS. There are chip instructions/features that Win10 wants that
may not have been turned on in the original BIOS in your computer. It's good to
keep your BIOS updated regardless. When I loaded Win10 on my two old Dell
Vostros (200 and 220), I had to update the BIOS on the 200 in order for Win10
to load because the original BIOS was missing a feature. After updating the
BIOS, Win10 loaded and has run fine since back in the Summer. Just some extra
info to consider.

Subject: [MBZ] OT Windows 10 again

My computer guy was just in and I asked him my question about updating
to 10 from 7.

He initially said he saw no good reason not to do so, but then had a
quick look to see what chip is in this computer.

It is an i7 860 which he says is a 1st generation chip and says he has
encountered problems with running 10 on i5 machines of the 1st generation.

He believes there is a fault in the chip and thus no way to fix it.

He recommended that I not change from 7.

Anyone else run into this scenario?

much sense buying something for an older computer that has a greater chance

Totally correct, always set the advanced update settings to "notify to
schedule restart" and that disables the autoreboot that you experienced.

Win10 is faster, lighter, and takes up less space on your hard drive. All
good reasons to update. Also, in 2020 Win7 drops out of microsofts support.

A POS system with a non-profit I help out at
once couldn't do work for an hour and a half as it booted, said it needed
updates, then forcibly rebooted without any concern to the business it just

To the underlying software it isn't that different
from 8, relatively speaking, so if it runs on 8 it should run on 10. My
game system is currently running 10.

I've recently changed how I use Windows, I no longer go looking for stuff in

Curley, when I loaded Win10 over Win7, it kept most of my settings. So, aside
from some small differences, it looks pretty much like Win7 on the surface.
Now, as I said, some of the setting menus, etc. are different, but the search
box quickly brings up whatever you're looking for so not a big problem. I think
the shutdown, go to sleep stuff is somewhat of a carryover from Win7. I
remember when Windows did updates and then rebooted. With both 7 and 10, it
updates about 30%, reboots, and then completes as it reloads. I don't like this
because it can get hung. I think the upgrade completely first and then reboot
is the best approach. Just my thoughts...

Mine have never hung on the re-boot after an upgrade, but there's always a
first time I guess.
I keep perfmon open in one corner all the time - when it's missing, I know
that MS re-booted the box.

You can set it to always load into desktop mode instead of whatever they
call the "new, improved" GUI. Of course, I did it once, and can't remember
how now.

Does anyone make a "classic" GUI for lose10?  As near as I can tell,
starting with 7 and Server 2008, there is no longer a way to set things

upgrade. I liked Win 7 and I like Win10. I run the 64bit Pro version except on
the Netbook which wants the 32bit version. You need to run through the menus
just to see where things have been moved. It seems the children keep wanting to
move stuff around. I have not had a problem with Win10 since I loaded it back
in the Summer. And I have yet to find any programs that don't work. Just my
experience, yours may vary.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Windows?

2016-12-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
One thing to beware is that Win10 doesn't "shut down" normally, it does a
hybrid suspend thing. Not all computers support it, I happen to own one that
does not. It worked for awhile, then wouldn't boot. To fix it I had to get into
safe mode which is annoying (crash out of the system 3 times) but other than
that not so bad...

svchost.exe is the process that is doing the hogging.

There are a number of viruses that grab svchost and then go crazy. There
are also several legitimate Windows services that occasionally go nuts as
well, the latter are usually self-healing when they finish or hit the
timeout. At a guess it was doing a drive scan or something, stimulated by
the reboot.

Windows Update is very sensitive to network connections and other services
queuing up behind it. The on-demand buttons seem to just be an illusion, I
think it just queries state stored from the last connection. Anyway I
often have to stop and start the Windows Update service or the BITS service
to get it going.

If you don't have all the service packs, downloading those on another
system and installing them directly might ease some of the pain.

This is nothing, just wait until you corrupt the registry! (Though to be

Windows will try to activate over the internet with the key you gave for

connected to the internet at least once (i.e. your NIC works). I'm not

it is now). You should not have to enable any special services.

If you open properties on my computer it will say whether the system is

You might be able to force activation by running Windows Update and
installing the Malware Detection application. I usually just wait it out.

If you are only offline, I think you will eventually get the same icon in
the system tray, and it will present a dialog box with information on how
you can call in to get an activation key.

[MBZ] OT: Windows 7 Questions

2015-07-25 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I have just installed Windows 7 Home Premium on our Dell Inspiron 600m
(old, outdated, underpowered, etc.) dual-boot with Linux laptop.

I have some questions:

1. How do I run Windows Update?

2. How do I manually run Windows authorization/activation (which must be
done in the first 30 days)?

There is a Window feature in the Control Panel called Windows Process
Activation Service with the sub-entries of:
- .NET Environment
- Configuration APIs
- Process Model

Are these things I should turn on?

3. What are XPS documents?

I want to be able to print to postscript so I can transfer the
postscript (with all the fonts) to my Linux system to make new PDFs
to replace ones which were made on a Windows system without all fonts
embedded (which are hard to read on Linux). Is that at all related?

4. Installing Windows 7, of course, over-wrote my GRUB boot sector
information. I have a procedure to fix the boot system of our main
computer, which is single-boot and has /boot as /dev/sda1:

1. Boot SystemRescue CD.
2. Execute startx
3. At a terminal prompt, type, grub enter.
4. Type, root (hd0,0).
5. Type, setup (hd0).
6. Type, quit.
7. Reboot.

   Since the laptop has

First partition - Windows 7
Second partition - another NTFS partition
Third partition - /boot,

should I change line 4 above to: Type, root (hd0,2) ?

5. Can I go ahead and install Dell's XP drivers and have things work
properly? The network is now working properly, so I figure I should
not install that driver, but the audio is not working.

6. Anything else I should know?

Thanks,

Craig

When I must use MSWin, I use PDFCreator to print PDF

GRUB or GRUB2? They are quite different.

That looks like GRUB legacy.

Since the laptop has

 First partition - Windows 7
Second partition - another NTFS partition
 Third partition - /boot,

should I change line 4 above to: Type, root (hd0,2) ?

Maybe. I tried to migrate a physical Win7 to a virtual
machine and this dual partition thwarted me and I failed. On
mine, the first partition was very small and was the Win7
boot. The second partition was the real Win location.

From my experience, Win7 is ornery about booting so I'm

 6. Anything else I should know?

I sure like having my MSWin as a guest OS. It means I don't
have to have as much software installed in MSWin because both
the guest and the host are running. And I set up the
networking so the guest can't reach the internet. And it's
easy to make a backup of the guest - or migrate to another
host. Oh, and I can copy/paste between the guest and the
host. The only disadvantage I've found is the need for RAM.

I have an laptop that shipped with WinXP, that I put the
maximum of 1G RAM and it was quite usable running a OpenBox
on the host and WinXP on the guest. Not peppy, but usable.

Craig,

1. Windows Update: Short: type windows update in the dialogue box that
opens just above the start button, after you click the start button. Long:
you should have a Control Panel option on the menu when you click on the
Start button (which is the Windows symbol, round and in bottom left
corner). Select the Control Panel, look for a choice that includes Windows
Update.

5. In my research I read on the internet, if the Win7 install does not
have a driver that works, you should be able to install the driver from the
OE CD and it probably will work and won't break anything. Try it now while
breaking it and reloading Win7 is still relatively painless.

Yes, you are right, it is on the Control Panel, and easily visible if one
has it display all entries instead of categories.

In XP, it was at the top of the start menu and readily visible.

I'm sold on VMWare over Parallels or VirtualBox for one essential
feature that the former has and the others don't: automatic key
remapping so that when you switch into Windows the Alt key is where a
touch-typist expects it to be (next to the spacebar, rather than next
to the Control key as the key labeled Alt [really Option] is on Macs).

I use Windows Live on my Windows machines. For a home computer it works fine.
Easy to set up email accounts, easy
to import mail, easy to migrate mail between accounts. It supports nested
folders for email storage also. I have no
complaints. The folders for backing up my email were pretty easy to find also.

I do not know how well it plays with other email clients, I upgraded from
Outlook Express.

Someday I will make a go at Thunderbird on my Linux machine. Currently I just

I've actually been running without runtime AV for some time now. I run
Malwarebytes full system scan at least once a week, haven't picked up anything

IME, if you plug all the remote entry holes that Micro$hit has open by default,

My wife's computer at work has AVAST! which I find to be pretty good.

From what I've read, the Windows 2000 classic mode is finally and
totally gone in Windows 7. You can turn off a lot of the bling and
achieve a more classic look, but it's not the same as enabling classic

[MBZ] OT Windows 7

2010-02-18 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Anybody using this? I order a new mini laptop for work and it arrived
today. Its a IBM with windows 7 on it. Holy crap, I dont know if I
like it or not. I suppose I could get used to it but it sure seems like
this computer moves VERY slow. I got to play with it a little more but
is there some way to set it to run like XP? Anything good about this
new version I should look for?

dump the internet connection all the time.

A friend at work has an HP Mini-Note 110 with the Atom 270 chip, 1 GB, and

Right click my computer' - Properties - Advanced system settings -

This is slightly inaccurate. Multi-pane windows that use a desiccant within

over-saturation point, and pow, instant milky windows. However, for well
over a decade, there have been multi-pane windows that use a rubber and foam
spacer without a need for a desiccant. I have yet to hear of a single

NASA in spacebound systems. And yes, the foam spaced windows are as much as
four times more expensive than the conventional metal spaced, desiccant
sealed windows.

Most of the 1976-vintage double windows in our house have
failed already, we try not to notice all the streaks and crud
inside. I found that Pella alone made NON-sealed double-pane
windows. You can remove the panel and clean inside. Marginally
less energy-efficient than the sealeds, at least for the N years
that a seal holds, but liable to last the life of the house with

That's what's in our new addition. Wasn't strictly to code
