Got an email from CRK this morning letting me know that I could pre-order the
K1. Out of curiosity followed the link ( https://pentax.com.au/products/19568
) and the price appears to have dropped already. Perhaps they have paid
attention to the comments on FB and the like.

IBM were famous for that. They had a very big manual and rules about how you

acronyms inside other acronyms. My favourite, possibly apocryphal, was AMD or
Air Movement Device, otherwise known as a fan. A three letter acronym for a

Re: PESO: Grain Silos

2015-01-22 Thread Paul Ewins
I spent the first half of my childhood in a small wheat town in northern
Victoria and that shot is deeply nostalgic. In those days the wheat trains
would have a long rake of old fashioned four wheel wagons stretched out behind
one of the smaller diesel engines that was used on the lightly built branch
lines. A couple of times a day the rail motor would pass through on the way to
the nearest regional city (Bendigo) where you could catch a passenger train
into Melbourne. Most of those branch lines are now disused for most of the
year, opening only for the wheat harvest. The stations have either been
bulldozed or left to fall down and the silos are all that is left.

By now you have probably seen the Sony announcement for the 24.3 MP

is has specs that are pretty close to what I expected from a first
Pentax FF camera, and I think the most surprising thing about it the
price of $1698 for the body only.

I think this pretty much forces Pentax to price their (allegedly
in-the-works) FF camera at close to the same price, if not less, and I
wonder if this is going to make the bean counters decide there is not
enough margin in a full frame product, after all.

Still, the one thing that the Sony a7 series does not provide to
Pentax owners is AF for their lenses. With the m42 and k-mount
adapters one must focus manually. Here is one Pentax aficianado's
 impressions and images: http://photo.net/pentax-camera-forum/00cfJ5

Also, I wonder if Pentax will not skip the 24.3MP FF sensor and go for
a sensor that more closely bridges the gap between the APS-C flagship
K-3 and the 645z. It seems more reasonable to me that they would go
with the 36.3 IMX094AQP Sony sensor used in the Nikon D800 and Sony
A7r (reportedly). If they did, that would allow Pentax to position its
offering closer to the Nikon D810 (currently $3295). It is with that
pixel density that I think a Pentax FF could get away with the same
sort of Anti-Alias scheme as found in the K-3. I have to believe that
the a7ii with its lower pixel density will have to have an AA filter
 to avoid moire.

 Time will tell.

Re: OT - Adobe CC is down, rendering apps and chat support unusable

2014-05-17 Thread Paul Ewins
I think I have a good idea what went wrong as I am learning how to create
digital publications at the moment. They are created in InDesign (which isn't
particularly backwards compatible to start with) and because there are so many
updates for the various possible devices that you might publish to, the master
file is always saved to the cloud and retrieved from there - i.e. there is no
local copy and you cannot manually transport it from machine to machine. The
idea is that this will prevent you from working with out of date device files
so that your digital publication will always work with all available devices
(or subset of devices) at the time you publish.

Most of the work that you need to do to prepare the digital publication can be
done off line like any other InDesign document, it is just the last steps when
you try and tie it all together that you need to be able to log in to the Cloud
to create or retrieve the master files. And yes, I have had occasions when I
couldn't log in at college, although I'm not sure whether it was Adobe's fault
or mine or possibly a glitch in the college's IT system. So for the companies
affected, having older copies of the software would probably make no difference.

Paul Ewins
Melbourne, Australia

Any business that upgraded to Adobe CC products and didn't leave
their existing CS6 or earlier versions installed deserves what they
 got.

At the college we haven't had CC installed because (due to licensing
minutiae beyond my comprehension) it actually works out much more
expensive than convention licensed software. I'm going in to campus
Monday and I'm going to suggest to the IT guys that they keep CS6
 installed, just in case.

Re: K-3 Silver

A metal casting will crack like that too. Looking at my K5 I had trouble
telling metal from plastic apart from the obvious bits like the flash and door.
I could feel the temperature difference in some parts so I knew they were
metal, but for other bits I had no idea.

Here is what I see or feel.
 - right side grip rubbery from the front mirror box housing around to a 1/4
 inch
by 2 inch vertical metal strip with two phillips screws holding it on.
 - continuing on around to the plastic SD card door with rubber remote
 cover below it.
 - on the back we have more rubbery grip on the right side followed by
 plastic which
carries the green button, AF button, LV button, 4 way buttons and OK
 button plus Info Menu
 - the remainder of the back is the plastic LCD with plastic surround
 - the left side is the rubber door for DCin, PC/AV, HDMI sockets and
 another thin vertical metal strip
 - the front left is again rubbery grip material up to the mirror box
 - the bottom is metal (aside from doors) and the flip-up flash is plastic.
 - the remaining top deck includes a big plastic picture window display
 and metal surround
I am a bit confused as I forgot one time to let go of the grip and
slammed the K-5 into the floor.
The result sure looked like cracked plastic, but I guess it's not.(see

Re: K-3 Silver

2013-10-13 Thread Paul Ewins
I agonised over it because I very much wanted a silver K3 but didn't see a use
for the grip. In the end I bit the bullet and ordered the silver kit mostly
because I hated the way the FA24, 43 and 77 (all silver) look on my black K5. I
guess there is a risk that the Silver K3 will be available later by itself but
as I'm not paying a premium (apart from the cost of the grip I may not use) I
don't feel too ripped off. In fact, like most Australians, I am rejoicing that
we pay the same price as the US customers.

I would rather have waited for solid reviews but if the silver kits sell out
and there is no rerun then I would be much more annoyed. I know they are
calling it a limited edition of 2000, but that might just mean there will only
be 2000 editions of the complete kit, so the only truly limited piece might be
the leather strap. That's just a guess, but I can't understand why they would
bother bringing out silver versions of the new HD limiteds and then have so few
potential buyers.

Paul Ewins

 Hi
Some guy at Flickr said that he wanted the silver version, without the grip,
which he didn't need. (The siver version is only available with the grip
 included).

I think that the Silver edition actually is quite cheep. You get the grip and
one extra battery and a leather strap for appr. 250 Euro more. That's a very
reasonable pricetag. I usually pay 250 Euro for the grip alone - no silver,
no leather strap and no extra battery.

I guess I'll order the silver version very soon - it's simply beautiful!
And I happen to own three silver limited lenses - 31 mm, 43 mm, 77 mm. They
af VERY nice, beautifully manufactured lenses, that can produce very fine
 images.

It's funny, that they only make 2000 copies of the Pentax K-3 Silver edition.
I guess they are all gone in early November!Regards

Pentax was originally a brand name of Asahi Optical before it became a company
name so I guess that we are really just going back to the way it started.
Remember that there was Heiland Pentax and Honeywell Pentax as well as Asahi
Pentax. Interestingly, according to wikipedia, back in the late thirties Ricoh
acquired a completely unrelated camera company called Asahi Optical which
existed at the same time as our Asahi Optical. I knew that Asahi (Rising
Sun) was a very common company name in Japan but hadn't realised that it
extended to multiple companies in the same field.

Re: K-5 dead

2013-06-16 Thread Paul Ewins
No, according to the tech I took it to first (assuming it to be a less serious
issue) took one look at it and told me the shutter has collapsed and must be
replaced. Basically the shutter doesn't retract fully so you are left with a
black stripe across the top of all of the images. If you go through the sensor
clean routine you can see the shutter blades blocking the bottom of the sensor.
In all other respects it still works normally. Apparently it is the usual way
that shutters fail when they have been heavily used, except that mine has only
done 8% of it's rated life.

Re: Using Pentax 67 lenses on K-mount bodies?

2013-04-25 Thread Paul Ewins
The P67 600/4 is a very old design. Apart from being hugely heavy it is also
notorious for chromatic aberration unless well stopped down. The P67 800/4 is
the same as the 600 but bigger and is difficult to find while the 800/6.7 is
pricey. The 500/5.6 can be had below $1k on a good day and is newer than the
K500/4.5 so is probably the best option. I don't know anything about the 645

Possibly the wrong f/l for me, and I already have too many cameras. In every
other respect it is great. Sure, no EVF, but there is an accessory optical
finder and if I understand it the snap shoot feature correctly that would be
enough to make this a great street camera and possibly travel camera. While I
would prefer to have access to a 35 or 50 I think the idea of using a fixed
lens to keep it as small as possible rather than bulking it up with
interchangeable lenses is the right one.

Re: camera locks?

2013-04-09 Thread Paul Ewins
A lot of those systems have long plates used for video cameras that would
probably stick out far enough from beneath the camera for that to work.
Alternatively you could make a steel spacer that goes between the camera and
the QR plate and attach a lock or cable to that. The biggest problem is finding
a way to lock it all down so that the thief doesn't simply unscrew the tripod
head and walk off with that with the camera attached.

I have a Berlebach wooden tripod with a Manfrotto three way head with hex QR
plates. I have attached a short length of 1/4 alloy bar to the back of the
plate to prevent the camera from rotating on the plate, so that once the camera
is attached to the head you can't simply unscrew the camera. I could probably
put a big set screw in between the legs and the base of the head to lock them
together. That would just leave me to find a way of preventing the release
mechanism for the QR plate being used. That bit isn't so simple since it is all
cast parts and drilling holes in them might weaken them to the point of
breaking.

Re: Pentax FF is going to happen

There is so much that I can do that doesn't require FF that I can wait another
year or two. I waited long enough for the *ist-D, I can do it again. It would
be nice to have tethering software but that is the only thing I couldn't do
that my Nikon and Canon classmates could (I am the only non Nikon or Canon

If Pentax were to make a full frame version of the K-5, i.e. same pixel
density and performance on a 24x36 sensor, and the same performance and
features otherwise, I expect that I would see two advantages:
 1) I would effectively have nearly twice the number of lenses, because most
of my glass would work without vignetting, and I'd get 1.5x wider AOVs on all
of my lenses. Mind you, my 50 on APS would be the same AOV as my 77 on FF, so
the actual difference is probably closer to 1.5 times the lens choices rather
 than 2 times.

 2) Due to the physics limitations of registration distance, I'd see a
substantial improvement in performance at the wide end, particularly in low
 light.

I would, however, be surprised to find a huge difference in the sharpness,
clarity, technical excellence, whatever in the vast majority of my photos.
I'm pretty good at pushing the limits of performance of my gear in stupid low
light, but landscapes and such, in good light. First, I'll need to spend a
lot of money on a much better tripod and head than I have. And then there
are all of the physical limitations as mentioned in other posts in this and
the sister thread on the topic.

I think that it would be accurate to say that for the vast majority of people
that might buy a camera, the only two things that a full frame DSLR Pentax
would give them over an APS equivalent are bragging rights and less money in
their bank account. So, in a reality based market, Pentax would be a little
foolish to bring out a FF DSLR.

The market, however, is not reality based. There are a tremendous number of
people that won't buy Pentax, or are considering changing to another brand
because Pentax doesn't have a FF option. Never mind that in most respects
the K-5 will outperform a large percentage of FF DSLRs, and we can probably
expect a significant improvement in the next generation of body.

If the goal of Pentax were to produce a camera system with the absolute best
possible image performance they would (cue wailing and moaning and gnashing
of teeth) abandon the DSLR format and develop a mirrorless system that uses a
24x36, or larger, sensor. The physical limitations of a mirrorbox, combined
with the jarring and vibration of a 24x36 mirror bouncing around every time
that you take a photo are direct impediments to the imaging system. As soon
as you have to add lenses for retrofocus you lose speed and sharpness of your
lens. If the mirror bouncing around weren't a problem, there wouldn't be so
much attention paid to mirror lockup, and two second delays. I'm sorry, but
physics is simply an unforgiving bitch.

I suppose that Pentax could try some sort of crazy end run and keep the
K-mount and registration distance by doing something like putting a 645D
 (36x48) sensor in something like a K-01. A medium format sensor and a 35mm
registration distance, and you have at least the theoretical potential for
wider AOV without the retrofocus elements, but I don't think that even
Pentax's pet mad scientists are quite that crazy. Hell, I don't think that
 even I'm that crazy.

Yes, in good light, optical viewfinders have all sorts of advantages over
electronic. But in lousy light electronic viewfinders work better, and in my
opinion the quality of the final image is more important than the quality of
the image in the viewfinder. If an optical viewfinder were that important, I
could just buy an optical viewfinder to slip in the hot shoe.

But, no matter what path they take, I'm fairly sure it will be one that will
allow me to use most of my existing lenses, at least with an adapter, and
that if the full frame body costs less than $3,000, and I'm still employed,
 I'll probably buy one.

Re: What's wrong with the K-01

2012-12-10 Thread Paul Ewins
I seriously doubt that he was allowed any say whatsoever into the function of
the camera, mechanical, electrical or software. Pentax would have gone to him
with a working prototype (in terms of parts and features) and then asked him to
repackage it in an interesting way. Let's face it, the K-01is a DSLR with
unnecessary bits taken off and nothing new added so there was likely never any
chance that it would get an EVF or OVF for that matter since that would add to
the cost.

The prices do seem to vary a bit, although the new M43 version is around $400,

Re: The MF - A Pentax Oddity

2012-11-05 Thread Paul Ewins
Hi Brian,
I own an MF and two MF-1s but don't know much more than you. I do
believe that it is meant for some sort of endoscope/gastroscope set up which
would bayonet on to the end of the lens/adapter. Only one of mine has the
endoscope adapter and it is different to yours - shorter and with the
designation AP-K55 so I guess there were different focal length adapters to
vary the magnification.

A couple of other things - you say it has no focussing screen, but does it have
the semi-spherical protrusion below the prism? If I mount a lens on mine I
still get a focussed image. The other thing is that although based on the ME it
has the two pins on the back for the old-style databack which would make it the
only ME style body to do so.

Re: student cameras still film?

2012-09-26 Thread Paul Ewins
I'm studying part-time at a college equivalent level and they have been all
digital here for around five years. I think the darkrooms became extra studio
space.

According to the lecturers the biggest downside is the loss of the contact
sheet. With students shooting hundreds of frames a week the lecturers can only
view what the students think is worth seeing and potentially interesting images
may get left behind because the student can't see the value in them. With a
couple of contact sheets they can see all of the work quite quickly.

In every other respect digital makes life easier and the learning quicker,
except of course for that whole Photoshop thing.

Hi Steve,
I'm not Canadian (although I have been to Lunenburg) but when I

the checkout process. It initially defaults to Fedex when it is quoting the
postage but I get to change that when I actually make the order.

the order just after the 645D was announced, and saw that the price for the
lenses had practically doubled. Anyway, the prices have dropped again to less
than they were previously, so I ordered one in EX condition with caps for $99.

I also made an impulse purchase in the form of a Tamron 55-200 zoom for my
Nikon D70 beater camera, for $39 new. It's a plastic mount kit-class lens
with screw drive AF...and I guess the newer, low-end Nikons no longer
screw...so there's not much demand for these lenses.

Anyway, the lenses arrived today and both look good. The Pentax looks brand
new. I'm hoping to get over to Lunenburg tomorrow - if Leslie has moved on -
to give it a work out.

Okay, Canadians, now that all the riff-raff have moved on, here is my advice:
if you want to order something from KEH, do not do it through their web site!
They only offer one shipping option online, and that is Fedex, which starts
at almost $60 and goes up from there. For my $138 order the shipping was
almost $80. In addition, Fedex will sock it to you with a brokerage fee on
delivery, which is something like 20% with a $10 minimum. I sent KEH an email
complaining about this and they replied, telling me to call in. I did, and
they offered me USPS Priority for $41 - and no brokerage fee. I complained
some more, and they grudgingly offered me USPS first class for...$22. I took

Re: OT: Jury verdict is for Apple (vs Samsung)

2012-08-27 Thread Paul Ewins
No, this suit isn't about Google. This one goes back to the late seventies when
the Apple II was being cloned by Asian manufacturers. They were fairly close to
exact knock-offs although some added an extra key to the keyboard and maybe
changed the startup ROM so that it didn't say Apple ][ when booted. Apple
spent a lot of time and money trying to shut them down and ever since has been
very quick to defend what they see as their stuff. I'm sure Samsung will
learn their lesson and make their phones more distinctive. Apple will continue
on with their small niche / big profit model until something comes out of left
field to which they can't react.

Re: OT: Matting Framing

2012-06-25 Thread Paul Ewins

On 26/06/2012, at 10:29 AM, Ed Keeney wrote:
Is there a simple step-by-step process you follow?

I am studying photography part-time at a local college and here is their
preferred method:

1. Lay the mat on top of the backing board (foam core or an uncut sheet of mat
board) in the same orientation as it would be when completed.
2. Now flip the mat upwards onto its back, as if you were changing months on a
calendar.
3. Butt the mat and the backing board together along the top edge and then run
a length of tape all the way along the top of the seam to join them.
4. Now flip the mat back again so that it is in the same state as in 1 - your
tape join should now be inside.
5. Place your print inside and gently move it around until it is correctly
located in the window of the mat.
6. Put something soft (so it doesn't scratch) but heavy on the print to prevent
it moving.
7. Flip the mat back, as in step 2.
8a. If your print has a border: run a piece of tape along the top edge of the
print to secure it to the backing board. You are done.
8b. if your print has no border: run a piece of tape along the back of the top
edge of the print, then flip the mat back and press down on it to stick the
tape to the back of the mat. Then carefully turn the whole assembly over so
that the backing board is on tip and open it up again. Carefully push along the
tape to properly secure it to the back of the mat. Close it up again, you are
done.

The idea of securing the print by a single piece of tape is so that any
expansion or contraction of the mount or print doesn't cause buckling since the
print is free to move. Making all the joins along the top edges allows the
print to hang and thus have the best chance of remaining flat.

Note that:
All materials should be acid free
The best tape to use is framer's tape
I buy my mats and backing boards pre-cut in small batches from an on-line
seller. It is cheaper and gives better results than trying to cut my own mats.

If the print is to be handled (e.g. judging) then I usually stick the mat down
as follows:

1. Flip back the mat as in step 2 7 above.
2. Run a strip of clear packaging tape along both sides of the mat and the
backing board from the middle to the bottom so that when you close it back up
the strips on the back of the mat will be in contact with the strips on the
front of the backing board.
3. Attach a piece of double sided tape on the packing tape on each side of the
backing board. If you have a large mount then use two pieces per side.
4. Close it up again and press on the edges so that the double sided tape
adheres to the packing tape on the back of the mat.
5. You are done.

The point of the packing tape is that you can separate the mount again at a
later date without ruining it because the packing tape adheres much more
strongly to the mat and backing board than the double sided tape adheres to the
packing tape. Just run a metal ruler or slim blade in between the mat and the
backing board and the double sided tape should just peel away from the
packaging tape.

Paul

FS: Super A + Winder MEII , A50 1.7, A35~70 3.5~4.5

2012-04-20 Thread Paul Ewins

For those who don't know, the Super A is the non-US version of the Super
Program. It is exactly the same except that it is all black rather than black
and silver. This camera was part of a job lot I bought to get another item, so
I've never used it myself. I've put fresh batteries in it and everything
appears to work, but I haven't actually taken pictures and had them developed.
The winder also appears to be working correctly. Ditto for the lenses.

The camera and winder I would rate as KEH BGN as there is some brassing around
the strap lugs and the winder casing has some light scratches. The lenses
probably rate closer to EX - there is a little paint loss on the tip of the
barrel on the zoom and there a couple of specks on the coating of the rear
element on the 50mm.

I'd like $125 for the lot and postage from here (Australia) to the US will
probably cost another $40. While I would consider splitting the package up,
postage will probably still be expensive.

If I was marketing the K-01 the message would be Do you want to be locked into
a system with few lenses and no room to grow or would you like to be part of a
system with a wide range of lenses which will still work later if you graduate
to an SLR. To me that is the unique selling point of the K-01, that it is part
of a fully fledged system. If you already own an SLR then your lenses will
mount (via adapters) to any of the other mirrorless cameras, but if your first
camera is mirrorless then you can't upgrade to an SLR without buying new
lenses. This is exactly the same selling point as for Nikon/Canon APS-C cameras
- you can upgrade to full frame and use (mostly) the same lenses. If the K-01

Re: Portfolio project

2012-02-03 Thread Paul Ewins
I think the individual images are just fine, it is just that they are all very
different. A portfolio needs to feel cohesive, and there is more to it than
just the subject matter. Your portfolio has colour and monochrome, verticals
and horizontals, square and rectangular crops, closeups and full length, dark
backgrounds and light backgrounds. There is nothing wrong with mixing styles in
a portfolio, but as much as possible you should try and harmonise things. If
most of your portfolio has one look and an image departs from that look you
have to justify it being there.

How are you displaying it? If they are mounted prints then format may be more
of an issue than mono vs colour. If it is to be projected then the reverse
might be true. For projection the order is really important too, since the
viewer might not be able to back and forth as they please (i.e. if shown to a
group of people). For mounted prints the order is still important, but you
might want to start and finish with strong images, or have contrasting images
side by side.

Don't think i'm the expert however, it is just that this is what I am learning
in my photo course and it is still very fresh in my mind. I have just started
second year and will have to hand in two printed portfolios by mid-year, all
shot from scratch, and I only have half an idea for one of them.

Good luck with it,

Paul

to sell it, you haven't given up the copyright on the text, so package it
some other way (even the widgety stuff can be done without Apple's tools, but
perhaps it will be more work)

And that is the crux of it. This isn't a multi-platform tool, it is just for
iBooks. If you are wanting to sell an e-book nowadays you have to reformat for
multiple file formats and then navigate the submission processes for the
various platforms which is not as straight forward as you might think.
Basically, almost all of your work should be done in your favourite text editor
(Word or whatever) and then tweaked separately for each different platform. The
i-books app sounds like it will allow you to go a lot further than you could on
a Kindle for instance. This is Apple's way of fighting back against Amazon's
desire for an e-book monopoly, by allowing the author to create works that look
much better than those on Amazon, so it is no surprise that they don't allow
you to sell the end product outside the i-books store. It isn't a copyright
grab, just a restriction on how you use the output of a free product. There is
nothing stopping you using some other tool to create the same product and
selling it elsewhere.

Inspired is the wrong word here, copied is correct. Company A decides not to
pay for an image from Company B, but instead gets another photographer to make
something that looks similar. They have intentionally copied the concept.
There's a bigger version playing out at the moment with David La Chapelle suing
the creators of a video clip for Rhianna for recreating elements from one of
his photos. You can be as inspired as you like and generally not run into
trouble, but if what you do is being used as a substitute for the original then
you will be at risk of this sort of law-suit.

Re: OT: FILM shot wins Pop Photo contest

2011-12-26 Thread Paul Ewins
Actually a lot of the newer lenses don't get much in the way of extra coverage
as they are stopped down wheras some of the older designs get a huge amount.
The difficulty is defining coverage, since a lot of the older lenses get very
soft at the edges. In some cases older examples of the same design will have
more coverage than newer ones since the manufacturers have tweaked them to
reduce the image circle so that the edges don't get too soft. If you are
contact printing from an ULF neg, say 12x20, then you really don't need much
resolution but if you are doing mural prints from 4x5 the you will want it to
be bleedingly sharp across the entire neg. The 8x10 and ULF guys will often
distinguish between the area that is illuminated and the area that is covered,
with coverage being a subjective measurement based on the photographer's own
requirements for sharpness. The phrase YMMV gets used a lot in discussions of
LF lenses.

large image circle to allow the use of camera movements.
Often, in order to cover the entire format when using significant tilt of the
lens or shifting of the lens or film, the lens also needs to be stopped down
to secure coverage of the corners of the film

Unfortunately no. You own the slides, but the copyright still belongs to
whoever shot it (or their heirs). Practically speaking, however, the chances of
you (actually your friend) facing a copyright action would be so small that

Amongst my other hobbies, I tend to acquire the odd addition from local

a handful of colour slides. I assume this whole lot was from an estate sale.

Most of these were the rather poor blurry kind a few of family unknown,

using one on a webpage - it shows a forest landscape.

My question is: Having bought these, albeit by accident of inclusion in a

garage/loft/house has furniture etc still left it becomes yours, can I use
my purchase - not to pass off as my own - but to use as described?

GESO: Night-time in Suburbia

2011-12-10 Thread Paul Ewins
http://www.paulewins.com/PSC/semester_2/Final/index.html

This is my major work for the second semester of my Diploma of Photography.
Last semester our final folios were mixed but this time we had to present a
consistent theme and mine was on the mundane places of daytime and how
different they look at night. They were all printed and matted for assessment
which was a big learning curve as we hadn't printed before and we went straight
to laying them all out to fit 44 roll paper and then trying desperately to cut
them without scratching or creasing them. There were moments of great stress
and despondency when things weren't going right but I have thoroughly enjoyed
and have signed up for next year already.

Re: Kennyboy reviews Pentax full frame SLR

2011-10-10 Thread Paul Ewins
I suspect that set-up is a fake, mainly because it uses a Spotmatic Motor Drive
bottom plate rather than the KM/KX Motor Drive bottom plate. On the KX/KM the
bottom plate has a bevel on it and the words MOTOR DRIVE are on the back,
while the Spotmatic plate has flat sides and MOTOR DRIVE engraved on the front.
The Spotmatic and K1000/KM/KX are so similar that it would probably be a very
easy job for any competent camera tech to swap the parts over. In addition,
the actual motor drive unit on the camera is the MD 1, (model 70001) which was
used with the Spotmatic and Spotmatic II. By the time the K bodies came around
it had already been superseded by the MDII (model 70054) and the K1000 was
introduced after the KM/KX so it seems unlikely that any special order K1000
Motor Drive unit would use anything other than the currently available parts.

Re: OT Polaroid and Impossible Projects Films

2011-10-02 Thread Paul Ewins
Polaroid film doesn't keep for any great length of time. The developing
chemicals go off and it stops working. Impossible film is still a work in
progress and nowhere near the original. Fuji still makes 3x4 pack film (but
have just discontinued the 4x5 version) which fits in a variety of Polaroid
cameras and in backs for MF LF cameras. It seems that no matter what format
you choose the film costs about $1 a shot, so the versatile 3x4 is good value.
I have a couple of polaroid folding cameras, a big shot portrait camera, an
NPC back on a 6x7 and a holder for my speed graphic and they all use the same
3x4 pack film.

On a side note, I recently bought an MX which had a back modified to take
Polaroid i-zone film (which is the same size as 35m film) Unfortunately the
i-zone film was discontinued around 2006, so I haven't been able to get any
that works.

Re: whats with this new technology where you can change the focus of the photo AFTER its captured?

2011-09-15 Thread Paul Ewins
From what I have read, but maybe misunderstood, it has multiple planes of
focus and you can choose which one you want afterwards. It is kind of like
one-shot focus stacking. The downside is that this reduces the number of
pixels used in the final image quite dramatically, since a lot of the others
are out of focus and get binned. it is an idea that is waiting for sensor
technology to catch up before it is useful for photographers.

Re: Can Anyone Identify this old car?

2011-09-01 Thread Paul Ewins
Pre WWII most cars arrived in Australia as a chassis and drivetrain and you
would go to a local firm to have a body built. Holden's Motor Body Builders
built bodies for GM, Ford Dodge at various times. GM bought them outright in
1931 and renamed them GM-Holden's but the cars were still sold as Chevrolets,
Buicks, Pontiacs, Vauxhalls and (briefly) Oldsmobiles. In 1948 the first
locally built car was launched and it was sold as a Holden while the imported
cars retained their brands.

On 02/09/2011, at 2:55 AM, John Sessoms wrote:

Well, it looks most like a 1937 Chevrolet Master Deluxe.
Distinctive shape of the grill. The little series of ridges that taper
off down the hood at the top corners of the radiator grill. Since it
is in Australia, it is probably a Holden, since they build GM vehicles
in Australia from the early 30s.

This page would seem to confirm it: http://home.znet.com/p1937/Tour.htm
It doesn't show the 4 door sedan (compare chevrolets to see the body
style) but the page above shows the distinctive design on the hood
 flaps.

 Darren Addy

My first thought was also Holden, but when I Googled for images I got the UK
automobile company whose models look nothing like it.

It didn't occur to me that an Australian company would be manufacturing US
designed models rather than UK designed models. But once I knew what to look
 for, I found another image of a 1937 GM-Holden:

 http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevytalk/gmhistory/37masterdeluxe.jpg

Caption reads: 1937 Chevrolet Master DeLuxe 4-door sedan bodied by General
 Motors-Holden's, Australia

Technically, I think it IS a 37 Chevy because it was marketed under the
 Chevrolet brand in pre-WWII Australia.

I wonder if it's in restorable condition?

Re: OT: best all-in-one PC?

2011-07-13 Thread Paul Ewins
Changing platforms via an upgrade is the easiest route. You just buy the
upgrade version of the suite for the new platform and when you do the
installation it will probably reject your existing product key. You ring up
Adobe support and explain the situation and they will give you a new one that
will work (don't forget to write that one down) and away you go. I've converted
a couple of suites this way and also dealt with products that have been
upgraded so many times that the original product key no longer worked
(originally you kept the same key when upgrading, now they give you a new one)
and each time Adobe support was very helpful.

The right zoom

2011-02-08 Thread Paul Ewins
Hi folks,
I'm looking for a zoom to complement the 17-70/4 which I recently
acquired to replace the 18-55 kit lens. I'm looking for quality optics without
huge weight or huge price.

If the 60-250/4 was a little cheaper and a little lighter it would be a done
deal, but it isn't.

Weight will probably also rule out the 3rd party 70-200/2.8 lenses. I already
own a manual focus Tokina 80-200/2.8 and it is larger and heavier than I want
to carry around all day.

I also own the 18-250 which is a great compromise for travel, but I want
something for when I don't have to compromise as much.

The contenders seem to be the 50-200 and 55-300 (although I don't know if they
are actually an improvement over the 18-250) or one of the FA or F series of
which the F70-210 seems to be the best. The 50-135/2.8 could be regarded as an
outside bet, but I'd prefer a longer zoom range. Ideally Pentax would have a
compact 70-200/4 to complement the 60-250/4 but they don't and neither does any
of the 3rd part manufacturers.

So, what say you - DA50-200, DA55-300, DA* 50-135, F70-210 or something that I
have managed to overlook.

thanks,
Paul

Re: Going 180 degrees the opposite of Christine...

2011-01-21 Thread Paul Ewins
My personal experience of reloading the cartridges -
1. It's not that hard, once you learn where to cut the cartridge to open it up
without damaging it. Forget about trying to use the film in it first, you need
to open them up in daylight.
2. 16mm single perf (1R) is the way to go - still available in Plus-X and
Tri-X last time I looked.
3. There is a tab you need to remove to differentiate between 100 400 film
(Actually I think the Auto 110 meter sets 80 and 320 ISO)
4. If you load the film one way up it will stop at every perforation, so you
need to wind and fire (with the cap on) around 3 1/2 times to get to next frame.
5. If you load the other way up it will wind on freely, but if you wind too far
the shutter uncocks and you waste the frame. It is better to never wind on
after shooting. If you press the shutter button and nothing happens it is time
to wind on.
6. Learn to love the grain.
7. 110/16mm film reels are a little hard to find but if you are patient they
will turn up on eBay.

Paul

I used to sell those, they were quite impressive little cameras.

Good luck finding 110 BW film. The only type that I believe was ever
supplied was Verichrome Pan, long discontinued in 110 and any other size film
 for that matter.

There are those who maintain that you can reload properly salvaged 110
cartridges with 16mm film stock but the standard perforations will fool and
Kodak standard film counter, (which I cannot remember if this camera has or
not), or the perforated stock will not allow the shutter to cock. Either way
 frame registration will be problematic.

6 x 7 bits wanted . . .

2011-01-21 Thread Paul Ewins
Christine's post has reminded me that there are a couple of 6 x 7 things I am
chasing. The first is the original 135/4 Super Macro Takumar lens, i.e. the one
before SMC coatings arrived. There seem to be plenty of Super-Multi-Coated
versions out there on eBay and at KEH, but nothing prior. It is listed in a
couple of the catalogs so I assume it does actually exist.

The other thing is a rear lens cap for the outer bayonet lenses, in my case a
400/4 SMC Takumar. As far as I can tell it look much like a normal one but has
a wide flange added which connects to the outer bayonet. I need the front one
as well but I can probably make one that will do. Actually I would like a
complete 400/4 Super Takumar, but that seemed a bit much to hope for even on
this list. In case you haven't guessed I am building up a collection of the
early 6x7 gear while it is still available and is still dirt cheap. I don't
expect either condition to last for ever.

You can email me at paulewins (at) optusnet (dot) com (dot) au

A few months ago there was a 600/4, 800/6.7 and 1000/8 sold on eBay out of
Switzerland. That was the first time I had seen a 1000/8 for sale and from
memory it sold for somewhere between $1000 and $1500. The big f4 lenses are
nice talking points but not that great in terms of image quality. One of the
shops in Melbourne has a 500/5.6 for under $1000, but even that is way too rich
for my blood despite being a bit more usable. Mostly I have been paying $100 -
$200 for the collector lenses which is probably what I would be paying if I was
collecting M42 lenses or the first k-mount lenses. Mind you, 67 lenses start to
look cheap compared to A* lenses.

Re: Model releases/commerical use/etc

2011-01-19 Thread Paul Ewins
Elizabeth,
It is the cover of magazines that requires the release not the
interior. Why? The cover is in effect advertising for the magazine and putting
your face on the cover implies that you have endorsed the magazine. The
interior of the magazine is not on show to the general public so it isn't
advertising the magazine.

If a magazine can argue that its cover is news then it can use the image
regardless which is why you see the unflattering celebrity images on the gossip
magazines or secret car prototypes on auto magazines. It isn't newspaper vs
magazine it is news vs non-news.

Commercial use doesn't cover printing the photo and selling it as an object.
That is art, not commerce, even if the photographs sell for $1,000,000 each.
The same applies to collecting the photos into a book. The exception here is
that if the subject is famous then it can be argued that the photo is only
valuable because of them and thus requires their permission (i.e. it is the
subject you are selling, not the composition). For the anonymous person on the
street this doesn't apply.

Note that while getting a model release is sound legal advice it won't
necessarily help you if you misuse the image, i.e. book a model for a lingerie
shoot and then use the photo for the cover of a soft porn movie.

GEOY (Gallery End of Year)

2010-12-30 Thread Paul Ewins
This gallery is the result of my first semester of study at Photographic
Studies College (in Melbourne) - www.psc.edu.au

I had been toying with the idea of actually studying photography for a few
years now, having found short courses, workshops and camera clubs to be a waste
of time (for me). The trouble is that most tertiary education here is at least
partly government funded and is thus skewed very heavily towards 17 year old
school leavers and towards vocational learning (i.e. will get you a job, not
learning for the sake of it.) The university options were one BA (photography)
course (at RMIT) or a BFA with a photography major (most of the universities
offered this). All of those were full time courses and places were fairly
keenly sought. With an over-supply of arts graduates and limited government
funding there seems little desire for any of the institutions to offer any arts
courses to mature age students part time.

The next step down is the TAFE system (Technical and Further Education) and
these are diplomas, not degrees. I had three options there, two places offered
courses skewed towards producing assistants and studio managers and the last
was PSC which offers an Advanced Diploma of Photography. It offers a rather
expensive (by local standards) full time course that runs over three years or a
much cheaper part time course (2 nights per week or all day Fridays) that takes
four years. The full time course if basically for school leavers who normally
aren't anywhere near as motivated or organised as mature age students. Our part
time class did have a few teenagers but the bulk were in the 25-35 range with a
few of us in our 40s and 50s to balance out the teens. There weren't any
complete beginners but most had little technical knowledge.

The course is entirely digital which does allow for much more rapid assessment
and feedback and plunges us straight into all of the colour concepts. The
downside as one tutor put it is that where in the past they would see all of
our work for the week in the form of a couple of BW proof sheets, now they
just see the 5 or 10 shots that we think is best from the few hundred we may
have shot that week. Our best work may be lurking in amongst the rejects
because we aren't sufficiently developed to recognise it. Certainly there were
many occasions in the review sessions when someone was almost apologetic about
a shot that they thought inferior but a lot of us absolutely loved. By then end
of the semester it was clear that everyone was able to produce good work
although some were more consistent than others.

The first 8 - 10 weeks was taken up with technical concepts in the morning and
art theory in the afternoon. We were expected to shoot in our own time and
upload images each week for review. In practice nobody managed to have
something new every week and there were a few that had a lot to do in the last
couple of weeks. The second half of the semester concentrated on shooting for
our final folio. The constraints were no cropping (apart from straightening
horizons), no flash, no monochrome. We had to provide 15 - 20 images in each of
three sections: People, Places, Objects (animals were generally regarded as
people since we tend to treat them in a similar way). In one of those sections
we were expected to provide a series of 6 - 9 conceptually linked images.
Otherwise we were expected to show a variety of subjects and methods which is
why the folio is varied to the point of being disjointed. For my concept I
started with waiting which gradually got refined to low light shots of lone
people and objects. It took me so long to work out what I was actually doing
that the last few shots were done in the week before submission but I enjoyed
the challenge immensely.

www.paulewins.com/PSC/semester_1/folio/index.html

All shot on the K7, mostly with FA24 and 43 but also 15, 77, 100 macro and
18-250. The FA 24 is annoyingly large compared to the limiteds but it was great
for the low light stuff. Despite the obvious shortcomings of a large range zoom
the 18-250 (and perhaps the 43) is the best option for a lightweight kit for
when I was just wandering around.

Re: The Physics of Photographing Moving Subjects

2010-12-25 Thread Paul Ewins
I couldn't be bothered to do any research at all and just used 600mm as the
tire height. (Are your students this lazy Igor?)

Race slicks are normally sold as being overall width by overall height by rim
size. I'm used to seeing it expressed in mm x mm x inch, but the figures there
are about right if you use cm, i.e. front = 33cm wide x 68cm tall on an 18 rim
and rear = 37cm wide x 71cm tall on an 18 rim. A 71cm tall tire gives a
better result, assuming of course that the 100mph speed was close. Even then a
10% difference one way or another won't make that much difference.

Yep, the more I've thought about it the more I think Paul was right, too.

I should note that a similar effect can be expected when the tire makes
 not about 1/15th of a turn, but also 2/15th, 3/15th, etc. (N/15),
but the contrast will be lower, and it probably wouldn't work beyond
N=3 (or maybe even 2, depending on the light conditions).

Yeah, that's part of the moire effect. Many integral multiples/fractions
 will give related effects.

I found the tire size, but I was not able to decipher it:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_R10_TDI
 * Front: 33/68-18.
 * Rear: 37/71-18.
I understand that the rims are 18.
What's the first (and the second) number(s)?

The only sense I can guess is if the first two numbers were in cm.

I think the first number is the width of the tread in centimeters, since that
works out to around 13. The 68 and 71 I'm not sure about, but they're
definitely not aspects for the sidewall height, as you noted.

Re: The Physics of Photographing Moving Subjects

2010-12-23 Thread Paul Ewins
I'm not sure that I'm answering your question correctly, but I threw a whole
lot of assumptions at a spreadsheet and came up with the conclusion that in
that 1/250 sec the wheel rotated around 1/10 of a revolution. If I am counting
right there are 15 spokes in the wheels. During the 1/250 sec each spoke travel
a little bit further than the distance to the next spoke. This means there are
sections where it has doubled up (i.e. both the current and previous spoke have
occupied that position during the exposure) so you get the ghost spokes as
well as the uniform blur.

Paul

in particular the spokes are rendered. It's a digital capture, but I've seen
the same effect in film captures.

 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=119672688098162set=a.114665221932242.11964.11662949948

Specifically, notice that the spokes, especially on the rear wheel, appear
mostly as blurs of grey. But also notice that there are specific highlights
that look like slightly blurry spokes themselves. The number of these
artifacts in the photo is identical to the actual number of spokes on each
wheel. I specifically checked after having noticed this effect in previous
 shots.

But I don't understand how they get there. I'm suspecting is some sort of
temporal moire thing going on, but I can't envision the mechanism. And
that's the help I'm asking. I'm hoping one of you can explain the physical
mechanism that's leading to those blurry spokes in the wheel instead of just
showing a less peaked, more uniform grey blur.

The shutter speed was 1/250, which is intentionally slow enough to give the
wheels and background a blur while giving me a chance to get a sharp shot of
the body while panning (I shoot almost all of the moving car shots on the
track at 1/250, if you can see the wheels in the shot; 1/125 if it's a slow
corner). The car was going about 100 miles an hour and accelerating as the
 shot was taken.

We've got a relatively new set up - Denon Amp and Polk speakers - and the first
bit of advice is that you absolutely need a centre speaker. We haven't bothered
with rear speakers but without the centre speaker you lose a lot of dialogue.
The same setup is used for audio and the sound quality is fine but the remote
control is poorly set up. To choose the CD input I have to flip the remote
over, open up a panel on the back and press a button there. They are probably
buying the remotes in bulk and then configuring the buttons rather than getting
a remote specially made to suit the unit. Apart from that I am happy with the
amp and speakers.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1329308/How-53million-Chinese-vase-kept-wobbly-bookcase-semi-insured-just-800.html

Supply and demand, the Apple 1 was basically a DIY kit sold to a very small
group of people (Homebrew Computer Club from memory) so there were few made and
thus few remain. I imagine an original Altair would bring similar sums as both
are rare and iconic. You need a lot of people collecting something before you
get really high prices for relatively mundane objects, since only a few of that
group will have both the means and desire to pay top dollar. The auction house
that sold the vase expected it to make 500,000 or so, but didn't realise that
there is know a large pool of wealthy Chinese collectors who would pay 100
times more than that. Given the status of Apple and the diehard nature of Apple
fans $200,000 is probably a not unrealistic figure.

Re: K-5, K-7, side-by-side at ISO 6400

2010-11-09 Thread Paul Ewins

It's funny, but this is the first time I've had upgrade fever. I bought the
*ist-D as soon as they were available locally but then sat out the all the
model upgrades until last year when we were travelling O/S and I finally
weakened and bought a K7. I have started studying photography at tertiary level
and generally the K7 does everything I want, but the low light capabilities of
the K5 suddenly make it seem like a must have upgrade. If it wasn't for the
fact that I can't afford to be without a camera until school finishes (mid
December) I would probably be trying to sell the K7 now and ordering a K5.
