I've been frantic the last three weeks - Kris and I keep in daily contact.
Couldn't get ahold of her electronically at all.
I got ahold of her husband, Steve, this morning, and he told me that Kris
passed away on the 9th o January, due to complications from diabetes and
rhinovirus.

I use a 2 computer setup to retrieve files off a damaaged computer -
1. the damaged computer itself, with a knoppix live cd.
2. a shuttle xp computer
3. a wired router.
So I boot #1, do the techniques I've described, and copy the files at #2,
from #1, TO #2.

It's very common for the name change to be listed inside of the divorce
decree, you don't have to wait for any new marriage thing to take effect
with her. If there's not the name change inside of the decree already,
