Hei Martina, When you compare area measurments in QGIS with area measurements in Mapinfo you are probably comparing geodesic measurements (in QGIS) with cartesian measurements (in Mapinfo). Thus, you get a difference. A bit confusing indeed, but a design choice... See:

Hi, Maybe it belongs to OSGeo4W (plugin update?)? The OGR-SOSI driver behaves comparable, and here the 32bit plugin is compiled against GDAL 1.10, while the 64bit plugin is compiled against GDAL 1.11. In a 64bit version of QGIS 2.3, SOSI is available as a file type, in the 32bit version not.

Did you check the coordinate system of your layer? Maybe the default in your QGIS settings is WGS84 and your layer is projected but lacks coordinate reference information (e.g. a .prj file). Then the default CRS is used for your layer (WGS84 which is limited to +/-90 / +/-180) and the e.g. UTM
