[QUAD-L] Why keep pushing on

2017-01-26 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
Why do people keep pushing on? I mean it's bad enough to be substantially
disabled, but it doesn't stop there. People, in general, don't want to be
around you. It's difficult to go places and do things; average things that most
people do all the time. And you know from experience that illnesses and such
can pop up at any moment, much more easily than the average person. You try
like hell to avoid being dependent on the government but it's nearly
impossible, even if you work full-time. That means you constantly have someone
with which to answer. Someone with their own rules, who can't begin to
understand you and what you go through on a daily basis. I could see where if
you were recently disabled then maybe you haven't been through enough to
realize what life is going to throw your way, but what about those of us that
have been around a while? What keeps you pushing on… Jeff

After a few years in your house, how do you
walls, doors, look from chair damage? I've been so careful not to crash,
scrape, bang, into things. After 12 years here, things still look pretty good.
I have a tight 2 turns to get into my room, No issues there. Coming out of my
room I have 1 big ding on a counter corner, and1 big ding on corner of the
frig. Both from backing up. My living room has a step down, a friend built an
oak ramp. I have some scrapes on the ramp from when my footrest is down to low.
That's it inside, but my front door is trashed. I push it open with my
footrest, often my joystick box scrapes it as it closes. I put a brass plate on
the bottom, but my footrest often misses it. Oh, the biggest damage inside is
the wall by my bed. I back in and ding the wall a lot, plus when I to transfer
they lift my armrest back and it hits the wall. A few holes there now. I now
have a piece of plywood there.Greg

One possible answer would be buy some duralock plastic Velcro and stick the
edges down. Im sure this wont be popular with the housekeeper. Or like you say
find some plastic edging to lay on the start of the rug, might still need the
plastic Velcro though called duralock.

How about "Me before You" with Emily Clarke of Game of Thrones fame.  I know
this was discussed before but I think the ending was unrealistic.  I mean the
guy has money and a hot, young lady willing to accept him, love him, show him
what the world is about.  Unlikely to last but I would take the 5-10 years of
that situation/scenario.  Another good one is "Rory O'Shea Was Here."  It's a

Jim and Jeffery, well said!  I also agree.  Ironically the tagline for the
movie was “Live Boldly”—are you kidding me?
Speaking of great Quad Movies, there is an amazing Must Read quad book that is
a true story called: "Lucky Break: A Love Story”  The true story of Kirk
Kilgour, an Olympic Level Volleyball player, who became a C4 complete quad, no
movement below his shoulder in his mid-20’s he was hired to coach the Italian
Volleyball team—a huge sport in Italy—and played professionally.
He was such an amazing person that—true story—after I finished a speech for the
National Spinal Cord Injury Association he came up to me to chat, and at the
same time a very attractive woman came up to talk with me as well.  She offered
to get us drinks and intypical male fashion I thought “man if I can ditch the
quad I might have a chance with this woman”.  As we got to talking I found his
stories so amazing that by the time she got back with our drinks my thought had
changed to, “ditch the woman, I want to hear more about this guy’s life”  we
became close friends.
The book is about his life and is written by a woman that fell in love with him
when he was in his early 40’s.  She was beautiful, athletic, lived in Aspen and
spent her days skiing, hiking, biking and met him by chance—she wanted to get
good seats to watchevents at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and he needed an
attendant—it turns out a friend of a friend introduced them via phone, sheflew
out to LA to do a week-long-trial run to see if it would work.  It didn’t, she
said she couldn’t be his attendant because she had fallen in love with him—the
feeling was mutual.  The book describes their life, the highs and lows, world
wide travel, Kirk meeting thePope and the Pope asking Kirk for his
autograph—true story.
I’m hoping somebody grabs hold of the book and turns it into a move, it would
be fantastic!
The book is available at Amazon.  Here is a review I wrote about it:

I've heard on here that Amazon Echo can run Insteon products which can help you

they were and it simply took an infrared or radio signal, whichever it is that

2 things.Camelbac, a water backpack with drinking tube. Helps if you can turn
your head. But don't need to. Whats nice is you bite to drink, so no dripping.
And if you just lay it on bed, you only need the insert bladder. Many sizes.
I'm sure you can find
cheaperhttps://www.amazon.com/Camelbak-70-Antidote-Replacement-Reservoir/dp/B00437WWMA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490319530&sr=8-1&keywords=camelbak+insert
Also used IV tube as a straw. Tip, if drink is higher than you, blow water
back after drinking. Otherwise at best it drips, at worst it starts a siphon
and drains on you.Greg

Hi  Debra and all,
Per Medicaid—if you manage to find work that pays you more than a couple
hundred dollars a month, check to see if your state has a “Working While On
Medicaid” program.  I *think* most states have someform of “Buy-in” program.
For instance in California, Medicaid is called Medi-Cal, and the program is
calledthe Medi-Cal 250% Working Disabled Program.  You must be disabled, not
exceed the cash and property limits, however you can make up to $56K a year and
still keep Medi-Cal if you work.  There is a monthly payment scaleyou buy the
Medicaid, it starts at $20.00 a month if you are making *around* $1600 or less,
and the more you makethe more your monthly payment is.  Best of luck on finding
income.
I do know that blogging has become popular, and if you find your voice—one that
others are interested in—you may beable to earn some money blogging for a
company’s website.  If you look up various companies in the SCI world you
willsee they have a blog—for instance Easy Stand has a blog, and if you look
the other companies, quite a few have blogsto inform and attract potential
clients.

Re: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old

2017-04-06 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
I feel like I've been pretty blessed when I hear what you guys have been
through; what you are currently going through.  I used to wonder a lot about
phantom pain.  I didn't know if I was actually feeling what you're feeling and
I have learned long ago to somehow just ignore what was taking place or that
maybe I'm just not feeling what you are feeling.  I am 38 years post injury and
I can stop at any moment in the day and think about what I'm feeling throughout
the paralyzed portion of my body.  I can feel, at this moment, an intense
tingling in my left calf, it feels like bumblebees living throughout my left
leg, I've got this weird numb kind of hurt in my right leg, my gut and/or
abdomen is just uncomfortable, both my feet and toes feel weird at the moment,
with a somewhat intense tingling feeling.  I could go on and on but I have no
idea if I learned long ago to just ignore this for the most part and deal with
life or if you guys are feeling something completely different.  I've started
having this "restless legs" situation just over the past couple months.  I
think it's actually been going on longer but it's gotten to the point where it
causes dysreflexia, so that's not good.  But I've been having one of my
attendants exercise them some before she leaves and it helps.  It didn't help
much last night but it's been helping.  I've got the same itchy scalp problem.
In fact I've even got a couple small scabs on the back of my head where I
rubbed it raw at times.  I really try to resist but obviously I haven't tried
hard enough.  I don't know, Dudes.  Obviously, getting older affects everyone,
paralyzed or not.  And I agree that those first number of years were much
easier in some ways and yet I went through a whole lot of learning the hard way
about some things that I know to avoid now.  No one said it was going to be
easy, but you would think being paralyzed was enough and from there you could
at least not be in pain, deal with sores, just be relaxed instead of stressed
and not knowing which way to turn with what's going on with your body.  Nope.
Just doesn't work that way.  For those of us who choose to live after becoming
paralyzed, it's a hard road.  But we must be getting something out of it to put
up with all this crap!  Jeff

Yep,I can identify with you guys. I have that same knife in my shoulder. My

Yeah, I'm going on 35 years as a quad. The last 10 have gotten worse with pain,
tightness, etc. And sometimes it's the stupid little things that make life
harder. My head itching for one. I just got a pet glove brush, I'm cutting it
out and Velcro on my headrest. Can't get the top of my head which is the worst,
but the sides itch too. My “Phantom” pains on my butt are driving me nutz. My
shoulder is my #1 pain now. After every test possible, still can't find the
knife I know is stuck in there somewhere. I think I have a Gremlin playing
games with a knife. He comes and goes, leaving no evidence. Xray, MRI,
CAT-Scan, Nerve Test, Gallstones, Thyroid. Some days I just hold my arm and
rock. Other days you can poke and prod and its perfect. Moving to AZ and
“Bagging” my bowel routine are the 2 best things I ever did to help issues.
Greg ---Yep, Greg all this weird stuff is part of a quads life I thinkI'm
going on twenty years as a quad, the 1st 10 years were much better for me, as I
age-i'm now 60 things have slowly seemed to get worse and this rainy up and
down temperatures here in Missouri cause me even more pains. I have a Syrinx
and diabetes also that only makes matters worseI usually do much better in
Spring and Summer as long as i don't get too over-heated then. Dan H***

Hell, Ron. You just need to start doing what you need to do to stay healthy.
Easy to blame "people" when you aren't willing to do what's necessary. I only
know I can say this kind of stuff because I've done the same things many times
and blamed many others when I know it starts with me. It's tough. I know. But
it starts with you. If only talking with someone in the know: a caseworker,

I was almost in trouble today people. I got ready to attach my handcycle and
headed out as normal. Made it just over a mile and dysreflexia started in with
a combination of the sun and my blood pressure started creeping up like a
monster. For some reason since I take pain pills a small amount of urine 300cc
turns my body  dysreflexic and needs to catherize immediately. I turned around
and started home but as soon as I peddled up the hill my vision was going a
bit. Luckily I finally made it to my moms garage and took the handcycle off and
tried to catherize in a urine bottle right then and there. As soon as the urine
started coming out it got better, then I splashed some water all over my head.
It reminded me of that story of the quad in the power chair that went to the
park on a 95 plus day and got stuck I the sand. The guy was found dead face
down in the sand a few hours later. What makes these challenges as a quad even
tougher is people...even family don't get it at all. They think you are
making it up for fun or something. Its starting to suck with standard
catherizations, especially getting out of bed every few hours during the night
to cath. I wish I had a nurse in the family or something so I could attach a
bag during the night at least but I guess Im not tough enough and need to stop
whining.

2017-05-05 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
Here's what really sucks for me.  I look at the nobuttonsheadset and I don't
like having something stuck on my ear until someone removes it.  Plus, if you
activate the phone by running it past a magnet that's about one inch away, then
how do you avoid having it pass across that same magnet from time to time, and
what happens when it does?  And a lot of these phones are set up to run by
voice anyway, so is this headset a glorified Bluetooth simply because it can
turn the phone on?  Then I have some similar issues with the Sesame Phone.  I
was able to try one out.  Seemed to work okay but I'm not sure how well it
would work over the long run.  I have concerns about it getting wet because it
does rain from time to time.  And if you cover it with something will that
affect your head movement and operation of the phone?  If you're moving it from
wheelchair to use in bed, but have it covered in case of rain, how easily do
you cover, uncover and change where it's positioned?  All reasons that make me
hesitate on either of these, but I'm paying for one voice over Internet phone
and a second lan line.  I may order the sesame phone because there is a 30 day
trial period.  At least I can find out if it's an option for getting rid of the
other two phones.  I wait much longer and the cost of the lan line doubles.  I
swear everything just goes up and up and up… Jeff

If you don't qualify for extra help (a.k.a. Medicaid)... you're going to end up
paying out of pocket. I had the best luck when I was living with my sister and
brother-in-law by word-of-mouth but now, out here, I have a live-in caregiver
(no one else) so she needs help but before my husband passed away we were able
to find girls at a local church and they were less expensive than home health
aides that want to be paid $26/hour to be a glorified babysitter let alone do
anything.
I am on the SCIC caregiver listserv (and have been for many many many years)
and the owner of the list is the mother of a Quad but I believe that she died
and her son (the quad) died before her but I could be wrong. I still get their
monthly list of what to do about this, that and the other thing  so you could
always subscribe to that.s...@yahoogroups.com

Right now I am trying to find help for a few hours a week and I can't even find
that anymore. People want jobs... so where are they? I have been trying for a
long time. My husband and I were so happy that we could find those girls and we
had caregivers every morning (4 visits from a home health agency aide was
great) and we hired the other woman for the other three days. They would screw
up with a lot of things and my husband had to step in to help with a transfer
or whatever but it was better than nothing. We then hired those girls we found
from the church. I am still trying to work through that again but I've been
trying for months.
Now it is hard as hell to find a home health agency since my only insurance is
Medicare. Things were better five years ago but now it seems like you have to
have Medicaid (in whatever state you are in) to qualify for the free help.
Good luck!

While I can empathize with all the caregivers out there... I have never seen
one article on help for those who need the help and are in constant pain and
need help around the clock and often times having their life stolen from them
like I have over the last year and a half. Not one single article.
I have been having the worst of time and hurt the most by medical caregivers
over the years but I have not been in a position like I am now since my injury
over 37 years ago. Back then at least I had my mother and my grandparents and
they were the ones who had a shrewd best interest in my well-being. Actions
will always speak louder than words and know that they are gone I have had to
fend for myself. Unfortunately, I am not wealthy enough to pay for what
caregivers now want just to become a glorified babysitter ($26/hour) but not
poor enough to be eligible for any type of Medicaid.
I have tried colleges, training programs, Independent Living Centers (I used to
work for one), churches and so much more only to come up empty. This is the
first time in my life I have not been able to find anyone.
Hope and prayer is the only thing I can do.

I am thinking of getting a new power chair. I like the mid-wheel Permobil. Have
any tried a  rear wheel drive or front wheel drive?  I live in a small house so
do not have a lot of room to turn etc. What is the better chair for a small
area? Thanks for any help.  Rose

Hello Rose

About a year and a half ago I got a Permobile F5 VS (vertical standing)
front-wheel-drive power chair with sip and puff controls (because it is a
standing chair there is no other option).
Personally, I've had a fair amount of mechanical issues with it, but that's
another story. As I understand it is a new model for them, and they're working
out the kinks. Well it's been slow my wheelchair provider and Permobile have
been and are still working on it. With no additional charges from either
company.

In the past I've had Invacare's, first one was real wheel second one was
mid-wheel. I much preferred the mid-wheel in every way, handling,
traction/going over stuff, tight spots/areas etc.

The front-wheel-drive that I presently have now goes over stuff better than
anything I've had. I think probably because there is no front wheels except the
drive wheels, so the drive wheels don't have push the smaller wheels over first
in the drive wheels being bigger tend to climb over things better. If you
happen to look at a VS on their website there are wheels in front but they do
not go down to floor level until you go into the standing option, for stability.
On my VS I believe the backend may stick out further than a regular
front-wheel-drive (you could check their website). Because the backend is out
so far you really have to watch the cornering because it likes to run into
everything, corners, chairs, cars, you name it.
However and take corners of front-wheel-drive works differently than the
mid-wheel. It turns sharp enough but instead of swinging wide to take the turn
you come in close and take a sharp turn. Say, you are going down the hall of
the house and the bathroom door was on the left, you would stay close to the
left wall and then take pretty much of 90° turn. But if you don't get close
enough to the left wall your backend hits into the right wall ( think of a
woman with a BIG bustle on her dress).
With that in mind, say you drive up along the kitchen counter on your right
side close enough to reach or see something. When you go to leave the counter
and try to go to the left, your backend likes to run into the kitchen counter
that you're trying to get away from.

With my front-wheel-drive I had to get used to the backend feeling kind of
squirrely/snaky at higher speeds.

My Permobile and I've heard of others has a nice backrest with nice support of
back and sides, but as with most chairs you have to get all the way back in the
seat.

I would suggest that if you like the mid-wheel or believe you would like it, I
would go with that.
But that's just one guys opinion.
Good luck, Randy

 Subject: [QUAD-L] Abdomen Pain

I've been miserable for a few weeks now.
First thought UTI, made a mistake and started my standby antibiotic before
testing, but it kept getting worse. Went to Doc. Test was goofy because I
started Cipro. Showed signs of UTI, but grew no cultures. Had abdomen xray to
see if there was blockage, etc. Looked fine. Stayed on Cipro, but still bad
after doses gone. Abdomen feels like its got a knife in there twisting. So off
to the ER this morning. Full Cat-Scan with contrast. Everything fine. Changed
cath 3 times in 2 weeks.  Only thing thats ever caused this feeling has been…
Cath not go in right… UTI, or taking some antibiotics. But this started before
the meds. ER did another UTI test, tiny bit of germs, but normal for a cath.
But trying a new antibiotic while doing a culture again. When it felt this bad
before, my abdomen would cramp causing terrible headaches and AD, but at least
I don't have that. Tried different pain meds and didn't dent it. Gad meds
either. Any ideas? I guess off o Urologist this week for a scope. Greg

2017-06-14 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
If your breathing and/or cardiovascular system has been affected, diminished
due to your disability, then it happened because you aren't breathing while
eating.  Try eating more slowly or take a couple bites and then take a break or
eat while you are tipped back.

But then I think, when you're in the situation and have to deal with this stuff
your level of being able to tolerate such things becomes, well, your level of
tolerance of life. No, the average AB hasn't dealt with this level and
therefore their tolerance of such things isn't as high, but it's at the level
of what they deal with in life. Adding just one more thing difficult of their
life can really stress them out, even though it may not "compare" to what we
deal with, just like adding something extra to what we deal with can then make
life pretty stressful when beforehand it was tolerable. Viewing it this way
helps me realize we're all in the same boat in a certain sense, if that makes
any sense… Jeff

Hi All,

I have the problem I don't get thirsty, and with the brain injury, I'm
not always good about remembering to drink water.

I knew dehydration could cause low blood pressure, but never knew it
could cause high blood pressure. So now I know why my blood pressure has
been so high (not AD high), but much higher than it has ever been before.

With the heat and humidity where I live, it's very easy to get
dehydrated, even in an air-conditioned house.

Hope all of you are doing well.

Like I was saying earlier, you have to basically live in the chair for who
knows how many years.  You should be making that choice.  I'm in a Pride chair
now, after two Invacares.  If I hadn't been steered away from Invacare, that's
what I would have.  I don't like this Pride chair.  Would I be happier in an
Invacare?  I don't know but it would've been completely my decision without any
steering by others.

Its gone from a silver dollar size to a dime. My mom says putting sugar on it
will work, but im not certain. I never really get air to it in fear of scraping
it on my footrest. The old skin is cut out as best we can. I know most normal
cuts like air now and then. Its a shame I don't really know how to improve my
circulation anymore since I had to quit swimming. I think better circulation
would have avoided it altogether. I took some old antibiotics I had left over
and had the biggest bowell accident known to man since the moon landing, lol.

I have a molded back seating system. I'm paralyzed from the shoulders down so
it doesn't affect any intended movement and it's nice to not have separate

The invacare chair I got last year has molded sides. These are lateral supports
that keep me from falling sideways. They have made driving my van much easier.
However, they are in the way for other things such as transferring, leaning
over to pick something up, etc.

Re: [QUAD-L] New Chair ?

2017-07-19 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
You know how when someone is in a car accident they often claim a neck injury,
which is nondescript and difficult to pinpoint.  You just have trouble sitting
up all day in those chairs.  You don't understand why, but it hurts and you
have to go back to bed.  Only the Invacare seems to allow for your sitting up
all day.

Below is a previous message I sent the
quadlist. I decided this morning I don’t even want to demo any chairs. The DME
vendor is having  problem getting two footrests instead of the platform plate
for all 3 chairs. I’ve been in an Invacare Action Arrow Storm for 19 years.
They no longer make this chair but the Torque 3 is the same chair, different
motor.   I called vendor to tell them to order the Invacare but they told me we
have to provide reasons why the other chairs won’t work before the FDA will
sign off on it (since Invacare is currently under Consent Decree with FDA). So
they still want me to demo chairs and come up with reasons they won’t work.  I
am so frustrated. I know one deal breaker is the armrests because I have a bag
that we attach to a particular spot on my armrest and I put my leg bag in it so
it is hidden. Their suggestion is to put in on front of seat pan. That won’t
work, not even gonna try it, what’s not broke doesn’t need fixed.  Also, I
believe by having the same base I won’t have to move e-z locks in the floor of
my van where as if the other bases are different not only will I have to pay to
have bolt added to chair but the expense of moving the bases.  Anyone else want
to help me come up with reasons why other chairs won’t work?  My rear is the
one that sits in it so why can’t I just pick what I freaking want?  Nicki
I’m getting my 3rd chair in 19 years. I have had the Invacare Action Arrow
Storm for all 19 years. Invacare got in trouble with the FDA and are under a
consent decree with them. My DME is really trying to steer me away from getting
an Invacare chair. It would be a Torque 3. I am suppose to be testing it as
well as a Permobil C350 and a Quantum Rival. The provider brought out the
Quantum on Friday and it has a plate footrest (I have always had 2 footrest
which allows me to straddle table posts at restaurants) I don’t even think my
feet would stay on a center mounted foot plate. They were suppose to bring the
Invacare first and the employee agreed he didn’t think my feet would stay on
the plate. He even told me that the motors in the Rival go out but I didn’t
hear that from him. The DME supplier is trying to get footrests for the demo
chairs but said they can only get 1 side for the Invacare.  Would love input on
any of these chairs.

head was thrown between my knees. I could not get up nor yell. It scared my
little son to death. It was a heck of a situation. Finally, he ran to the back
door crying. My wife finally heard him and came looking for me. I was rescued

supplier because I had to have them that day. $352 worth. In June, same thing
with my chair stopping saying low battery but joystick shows full charge (I use
my chair very little). They swapped out batteries at no charge but said it had

batteries put in Monday since March. All of a sudden my chair was stopping
saying “low battery”. I would turn it off then on and go a few feet and repeat.
Joystick shows full battery charge. Woke up in March and my house smelled like
rotten eggs. I paid out of pocket for what they said were gel batteries from a
battery supplier because I had to have them that day. $352 worth. In June, same
thing with my chair stopping saying low battery but joystick shows full charge
(I use my chair very little). They swapped out batteries at no charge but said
it had to be my chair. DME company came out right after 4th of July and ordered
new batteries and new charger. Got them Sept 9, they said what I had was not
true gel cell . Last week, same thing, low battery and chair stopping even
though joystick shows full charge. We ordered new battery boxes, receptacles,
joystick and they warrantied my batteries but by the time parts get here these
batteries will be shot and I’ll have to pay out of pocket again. My chair is 8
yrs old and new chair process is on hold until medicare covers parts.
Soo frustrated the DME company drug their feet on parts and really
trying to troubleshoot the problem. I asked in July to order anything it could
possibly be. I did call Invacare and they said DME company should have brought
programmer to see fault codes so I called them and asked that he please bring
it. Really didn’t tell much other than I’m having low batteries.   I feel your
pain and good luck!   Nicki    From: greg [mailto:g...@eskimo.com]

It's just very frustrating because I mentioned while at a seating clinic a week
ago that I needed my anti-tip bars raised and a new gooseneck for my sip and
puff chair. The anti-tip bars were adjusted at the seating clinic. Without even
making an appointment, someone from my chair tech company showed up yesterday
and, while telling me he had the gooseneck listed on his paperwork to be
ordered, he checked the date of the batteries, which seemed to be working fine,
but they know my insurance will pay for new ones, checked my tires, which also
seem fine, but they'll probably order new ones because my insurance will pay,
and I don't know what else he did because I was taking a break from working
just to deal with all this stuff.
I made the ultimate decision, but I was steered away from purchasing my third
Invacare chair in a row. The chair they steered me towards? It turned out to
have a major flaw and, instead of replacing it, I told them I didn't want that
brand. Again, I let them steer me away from Invacare, and now I have a chair
that's had its share of issues, still does, doesn't go as far as it should on a
full charge, which I complained about early on, but they don't look at the
things you are mentioning, Wheelchair. Instead, it's replace batteries, try
different batteries if the replacements don't make a difference, and do
everything – it seems – but what it really takes to make it work properly. The
biggest issue, in my opinion, is they don't "live" in a wheelchair. I realize
they have to make money but this is just kind of messed up… Jeff

Without a certified tech, your chair is just a fancy, expensive, flashlight.
Does not sound like your batteries are the issue, but rather are suffering the
effects of a component failure.  For example if the magnetic brakes have
internal issues, each manufacturer requires that the motor assembly, which
includes the magnetic brakes, motor and gearbox be replaced. Also when
replacing a motor assembly, both motors are replaced for even movement of the
chair.  There is a lot more to it and I hope you find a certified tech.Best

Your wheelchair is still under factory warranty.  Please consider calling them
with the serial number of your chair. Once the issue is documented any repairs
will be covered after the warranty. Call Customer Care and be prepared to voice
your issue and concerns.  Ask them if it is safe to use your chair until its
repaired or reprogrammed. Don't wait one minute, call them tomorrow.  Be nice
and wait for them to reply. This could be an easy fix or complicated, requiring
a certified field tech, maybe your provider. Please let me know what

Strangely enough, my previous chair, a storm, did the very same thing. Never

Let me clarify a bit. When I hit the off button, the screen stays lit but says
goodbye. I turn it back on but the chair still won't do anything until I
disconnect and reconnect the batteries. The switch must be on when I plug it
back in. Mucho frustrating.

Implications of the Cures Act for Special Needs TrustsLast week, the Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a State Medicaid Director Letter
(SMDL) # 17-001 on the 21st Century Cures Act: Special Needs Trust. Section
5007 of the 21st Century Cures Act (the “Cures Act”), Pub. L. No. 114-255,
supports the independence of individuals with disabilities by permitting them
to set up a special needs trust on their own behalf, rather than having to rely
on a third party to do so. Special needs trusts generally permit individuals
living with disabilities who are under age 65 to set aside assets to meet their
needs without impacting their eligibility for Medicaid. This letter provides
guidance to states on the implications of section 5007 of the Cures Act,
entitled “Fairness in Medicaid Supplemental Needs Trusts,” for individuals who
have disabilities. For more information on the letter issued today click here:

[QUAD-L] Echo Calling

2017-09-05 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
Whatever cell phone contains the Alexa App that set up your Echo is where your
contacts for calling will exist. I am pretty sure they get imported into the
Alexa App automatically. Having someone else load the Alexa App on their cell
phone, combined with their name/number being in the Alexa App contact list that
set up your Echo, should allow you to call that person's cell phone. I was able
to call my attendant, who does not have an Echo, but did download the Alexa
App, and it rang through to her cell phone, but she received some kind of
microphone setting error that may be specific to her phone.

If public transit, buses etc., arrive at or nearby your location then they have
to also provide a paratransit vehicle, which should have a lift or ramp and get
you where you need to go and return again. Call them and schedule appointments

Subject: [QUAD-L] Taxicabs for wheelchair users??? With an attendant? Info
needed please  I desperately need to get to one appointment with vocational
rehabilitation, because they will purchase the $40,000 Permobil power chair
with a Puff and sip navigation system so I would not have to be in the bed 24
seven as I currently have been for years.  They have a rule that without any
exceptions, a potential client must show up at their office for one initial
appointment.  I have begged for someone from my family to provide
transportation for me to one appointment for quite a while now, and it is
become painfully obvious no one is going to step up to the plate and assist me
in this endeavor, so I'm asking you guys what can I do to hire somebody like a
taxi for wheelchair people and an attendant, because I'm paralyzed from the
neck down so I cannot possibly use my arms to wheel myself around to even get
into the building.  I don't even know what to search for to find out how to do
this so please explain it to me as if I knew nothing, because I truly don't
know anything about this. Since my arms became paralyzed, I've only been out of
my room at the nursing home on Thanksgiving and Christmas when one of my
children would come take me home each year.  And to sit in the horrible
wheelchair they provide for me at the nursing home, is so uncomfortable I cry
even though they line it with bed pillows underneath my bottom and back and
feet. And when I had my power chair, the chair was fully articulating and was
much more comfortable than being in bed. Whenever I needed to I could
reposition myself in the chair without having to wait for somebody to come
assist me, which is a constant dilemma in an understaffed nursing home.   As an
aside, I need someone to come stretch my legs and arms every day to move them
because I get unbearable cramps which I did not get when I had a volunteer
coming to stretch me every day, but she had to go back north. Please advise me
as to how I could hire someone to do this or get someone from Medicaid to
provide this service for me.  Debra Scruggs-Scruggs phalanx-dragon slayers

I've also had a cast on a broken bone before and everything went perfectly fine.

Re: [QUAD-L] Re: [QUAD-L] Problems with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13… I just had to reinstall 12.5

2017-11-04 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
I've been using some form of "Dragon" since I believe it was called ViaVoice by
IBM. Somewhere along the line they became DragonDictate, which was extremely
stable, easy to use, and worked really well. I don't know how many times the
product has been sold but eventually it became Dragon NaturallySpeaking
(differently named under v15) and was tailored more for commercial than private
use. That was the "downfall." But I work 40 hours a week without the use of my
hands and need the product. If I eventually have to go to something completely
different, I will, but until then I'll take my chances with "Dragon." Seems to
me that a lot of the problems it has has to do with continuously upgraded
computer software. For example, "Dragon" seems to work best with Internet
Explorer, browser-wise, but I've found out, if accurate, that without Adobe
Acrobat, I've had issues. I moved to Firefox but simply ran into other
problems. Lately I've been using Chrome and it's been tolerable. With regards
to Nuance's customer support, I won't use the kind of language I should. They
suck and have for as long as I can remember. My hope is that the product gets
sold to some company that cares as much about the product being used by
individuals with disabilities as it does the commercial use of its product. Jeff

Guys,
I’m a little late answering this post because I was hospitalized for a while.
I’m better now so here goes:Nuance as the company has turned the corner from
being the premier voice software to becoming a mega marketing platform. None of
the speech products are up to production code. Personally I am using voice for
Mac professional and over the last 6 months I’ve had at least 700 crashes. He
version 5 of the program was so bad • that they had pull it back from
production. That did not mean giving everyone their money back and just put out
a version 6 and charge everyone $249 for an upgrade. That upgrade was
unintelligible until version 6.02, which only crashed every 30 minutes.
It wasn’t merely time-consuming going from release to release but it meant
training and retraining every version that came out. I am currently running
6.07 and it does not crash as much as long as I do not have too many things on
the screen at the same time. It seems that Dragon must keep its eye on every
button, link or words in its memory in order to navigate properly.
You are not the only one who has mistakingly upgraded their equipment due to
Nuance malfeasance. Their user forum, once a place to solve problems or share
experiences just mysteriously closed down when user population use the forum
for nothing but suing Nuance for false advertising and loss hours of production.
This was not the only people who are buying $300-$400 one time boxes. The
lawyers and doctors who pay thousands of dollars to build the practices upon
which recognition of also lost out.
The competition is starting to squeeze Nuance out on the voice recognition
arena.  Programs like Siri and Alexa are already composing messages small
emails. Ready for prime time voice recognition for the desktop is almost here.
Patients and don’t buy any more hardware if you suspect it will make Nuance any
better.

the fact that I could've bought another computer for the money I spent on
repairs, I finally got the brilliant idea after reinstalling Windows and
everything else repeatedly that that was not the problem and I suspected
something was wrong with the Dragon 13 program.  So although they had my
computer for over a week, I finally got it back last week with 12.5 reinstalled
and so far no crashes.  The only difference I can tell in the two programs is
that with Dragon 13 trading the profile was not required, but that only took me
a few minutes anyway so that's really not an issue to me.  I never had
recognition issues with either program unless the profile was becoming
corrupted and then all I did was make a new profile.  Not a big deal.
I just wanted to share this with you guys in case you were not aware of it.
Obviously Dragon has a monopoly and they do not care about their customers
satisfaction any longer.  It would've been very graciously polite they would
share the news about their newest release not being so hot, and saved us a lot
of difficulties figuring out what was going on.

I know that many on the list are struggling. In our quad life we face many
experiences and give us a lot of pain and struggle. But look back from the
start of your injury to this moment and put into your mind the good things that
have came into your life. Life as a quad is a dance of pain and some good
times, but if you didn't have the chance to survive all those good things would
have never been. Our lives are different but just as important as anyone else.
We appreciate the good more now more than ever. When you suffer remember the
good times from the past and good times still to come. The people you met,
things you accomplished, places you went, little victories, a good movie, a
special friend, smelling the morning dew. People need to understand that life
in any form is a gift and should be appreciated. So many regular healthy folks
commit suicide every year(40,000)and it so sad. Christmas is a harder time for
me and its almost my 20th anniversary as a quad jan 16, 98. Lets all try to
enjoy the moment.

to say what I intend. I'm free, live in the United States of America, the
greatest nation on earth and at the moment have free speech. I have been on the
quad site most of 12 to 14 years, if not more and enjoyed the posts that came
across, found many helpful and I was able to help other people that posted. I’m
proud of who I am, what I’ve accomplished in my life and scared of the road
that I need to travel. I have this road close to my house that I call my Prayer
Road. When I have an issue I will travel this road to think and pray. I was
traveling that road in 1996 praying for an answer to prayer because of a
decision I needed to make. My mother was put on a ventilator and a decision
needed to be made to continue. Being the only surviving child the weight fell
on my shoulders and that was the issue I was praying about. I know the spot
that an audible voice told me “don’t worry she is already with me.” That is
something I will never forget. I still travel that road when I have an issue to
think or pray about, but I look at the road a little different. About two
thirds of the way on this road, I look back. What I see is a stone road that I
traveled many times. This road is now paved, but in my mind I can still see a
stone road and small concrete bridge. This road I traveled hundreds of times on
the way to “the old swimming hole”. Oh yes, the old swimming hole, many of us
have areas like this, many of the kids that swam there also tried their first
cigarette or other first. Mine was a small corncob pipe, tobacco was cherry
blend half-and-half. As I look back the road I treasure the memories of the
swimming hole and probably the best hunting for small game in the area. I took
many a rabbit and squirrel from that road. Gone is the stone road, much of the
trees and brush, remaining sweet memories. Today on that same road after I have
looked back, I look forward. The road goes up a small hill and bears to the
left. If you are new to that road wonder, what is ahead, what will I need to go
through. I know what I find for I elected to follow that road many years ago.
However, the thought of what is ahead and how will I handle it is the
million-dollar question. A few months ago someone made the comment about ending
their life, but stated that they probably would not have the strength to go
through that. It is not srength to end your life, I know that all too well.
Yes, it is going to end your suffering and Lord knows I’ve suffered too. I’ve
also gone through pain when a brother committed suicide and I know firsthand
what it does to those around you. My nephew to this day has to be on medication
for depression. If he does not take his medicine they may find him laying on
the floor rolled up in a ball. My brother was a police officer, was on solo
patrol and watched helplessly as his best friends father, a damn drunk, stepped
out from the backside of a telephone pole into the path of a car, to commit
suicide. My brother tried to get him out and resuscitate him, but no go. The
year was 1975 and thinking about actions like this were totally different. The
police department gave a few counseling sessions, but basically told him not to
think about it or talk about it and eventually it will go away. Well, just
about a year later it went away and so does my brother. I am mad at the police
department, or basically the people that were in charge of that time, but I met
her at my brother. At my time of life I need someone that I can share with, and
certain things cannot be shared and understood unless it is a sibling or very
long-standing friend. My accident was 1966, so that makes me almost 52 years
post SCI. In those 52 years I started out with two small businesses, the first
making Christma

I've been using these dental "saliva ejectors" with my sip and puff. They are a

you drop it in warm water, mold it to the shape then put it in cold water and

Can you use an IV tube?
If you taped a pipe cleaner thing to it, or unbent paper-clip, covered in
tape. You could bend it to any shape.

Re: [QUAD-L] Ramp/Door Problems

2018-03-23 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
I have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan and have had the same issues. I took it out
to Ability Center in Wilsonville, Oregon. They told me they've seen the same
issues with this type of van when it gets that old. Unfortunately, we couldn't
duplicate the problems I was having but they seemed to have a basic idea of
what the problem would/could be. I don't recall exactly what they said but you
might want to give them a try.

Not sure how old your IMS Conversion is but I'm guessing the parts necessary
are becoming obsolete as new technology takes over and old technology is passe.
Have you considered contacting IMS directly for their Zone Manager or their
tech service dept.  This is the best I can offer you now..Best Wishes

I have a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan with IMS Conversion. I took my van to United
Access OKC (hate it) and waited 2.5 hours to be told what I told them was wrong
with it. My ramp isn’t extending out to ground level and it doesn’t pull
completely in which sometime prevents the door from closing all the way. Ramp
also wouldn’t pull back in unless the flap at the top of ramp is lifted.  My
door also isn’t unlatching and someone has to pull the handle after I push the
button to open it. They told me even if they could get parts it would be
$10,000 to $15,000 and that would be a great down payment on a new van. They
waived the diagnostic fee and gave me a card for their salesman. They didn’t
even clean or service the ramp.Purchasing a new van is not an option. I took my
van to a technology school and the kids there cleaned the components they could
reach and eventually got the ramp to extend/retract like it should. The
instructor couldn’t get the door latch figured out before he ran out of time.
He fixed it before but we don’t remember exactly what he did to fix it. (He
took the panel off the inside of the door and did something to the part that
makes the latch unlatch. Is there an adjustment that can be made on that
part?). The ramp pulls in very slow. I am open to any suggestions as to what
could be wrong/how to fix it. ThanksNicki

Re: [QUAD-L] AD?

2018-03-28 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
To me, A.D. involves increased blood pressure, thus the pounding in your head
and perhaps the cramping in your chest.  If it gets to that point I'd either
have a drug on hand to lower blood pressure, call 911, or take your chances…
And I have had it stay in my head for a while after the cause of it all has
been eliminated.  Could have been gas?

When you get an AD Headache, does the pain stay in your head, or does your
chest cramp too? This morning, for no know reason, just getting dressed, I
thought my head was going to explode out my left eye. But my chest cramped so
hard it hurt too. Then my abdomen area starts to groan. As it groans, the
pressure starts to release. Greg

It's a temporary medicine. Not sure what it's called but I kept it around at
one time. You might ask a doctor. It's only for "emergencies".

It could be gas, has been before. but not much going on now.
When I get AD I do spasm a lot.
Most of the time on me, its bowel or bladder.
Or touching my crotch area when I get a yeast infection.
As long as I can sit up, it goes away quickly.
I fear taking lower blood pressure meds to lower it, since most of the time
I'm dealing with low blood pressure.

Re: [QUAD-L] tongue control versus sip and puff?

2018-04-15 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
Amazing technology. I wish the inventor and the one user would have just
referred to it as an alternative. As a longtime sip and puff chair user, I can
make my chair dance. To call sip and puff "very slow" and "like Morse code" is
kind of ridiculous. I would challenge my ability of sip and puff against any
other type of use for driving a wheelchair, which is what you do with a
wheelchair. The fact that this technology allows for other uses, like computer,
cell phone etc. is pretty amazing. But that can be used whether or not someone
is using sip and puff with the wheelchair. It's great technology. I hope they
keep finding different ways to make life better for us, but I don't see any
reason to put down sip and puff technology in order to propagate this
technology. Thanks for the article! Jeff

Re: [QUAD-L] 45th Anniversary

2018-04-17 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
How different and similar lives can be.  This Saturday will mark 39 years post
injury, from the age of 17.  I'm fortunate in that my body doesn't hurt but I
have also recently discovered a serious pressure sore, despite having an
expensive, unique seating system and having been pressure mapped in the system
probably 4-5 times in the last year – with the mapping showing no pressure.
And while I haven't had my current PAs with me for 9 years, they probably both
have at least 5 years apiece.  I went to college, haven't traveled much,
certainly been bad, but like to think I'm good, and I don't know what the
future holds.  Except, I hope there are no "newbies."  Jeff

I don't know how much longer I can stand sitting. I just found out I have a

And that's with Pete checking my skin EVERY day ... it just "cropped up"
