2008-03-02 Thread Amy Davis
Just need some support...ok a lot of support. I am an AB caregiver to my bf who
is a quad. I am 42 and he is 48. Going thru some really rough times now...the
both of us seperately and together. Just need to talk to someone who
understands and can help me get thru this. Seems I am at the end of my rope in
more ways than one.
Please email me privately. Thanks so much

Re: [QUAD-L] Fwd: Great message

2008-02-28 Thread Amy Davis
Oh my! This guy is truly amazing. I had to show the videos to my sons who were
also amazed at his independence. He is an example even for us AB's. To
appreciate all the things we take for granted. I even forwarded it to my
friends. This was good to see after feeling sorry for myself for a while now.
Makes me realize how lucky I am to be an AB. Sometimes I take it for granted
even though my bf is a quad. Thanks for sharing that. He is a special person
for sure.

any relief? Have any of you had sucess with draining it or with surgery? Does
it always come back? There has to be something that can be done.

Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Neck!

Like Billy ... I have something very similar to what you describe. It
began in 1997 at the lower part of my neck. Pain but no numbness. The muscles
in my neck have always been very strong since my injury in 1979/1980 because I
have to use them to help hold me up, etc..

My neck was fused from C2-C7 ... I guess the surgeon at the time really,
really, really wanted to make sure that my neck was stable! It sure is -- but
NOW at an expense. My husband teases me that my neck bone is connected to my
butt bone! LOL

All kidding aside because this affects me every day now. My neck fusion is
what does not allow me to turn my head to the left or the right very far at
all. This was never a problem for the first 17 years after my injury. I would
have thought after all of those years of depending upon those muscles (neck,
lower neck, spine and shoulders) that I would have some sort of pain or
problems LONG before 1997 but nope.

I was then diagnosed in September of 1994 with Syringomyelia and had
surgery. However, I had none of the pains anywhere until two years after the
surgery! But the pain is pretty much where my spine is and where the shunt is
located... my lung cavity. Which is also where the trapezius muscle is that is
aggravated if I overuse it. So it is like it is all tied in together at my
expense.

The ONLY thing that had changed in my life was that my EX wanted to split
up and I ended up moving into an assisted living facility. I was no longer
transferring or moving the way I had been for many years. ALTHOUGH...
absolutely nothing was hurting me when I was transferring or getting moved.
So, by process of a limitation, and since it started right then... I must
assume that my body was getting moved in a way that my upper neck and spine and
all the areas mentioned above DISLIKED whatever was happening different and
even now I am very careful now until this day... there is no going back.
Things have only worsened. Although Syringomyelia is a condition that either
stays stable or gets worse.

Like you... turning my head left or right makes everything much, much
worse! My MRIs show that everything is OK. And the last comment that I got
from a doctor seems to sum it up the best. He said that the shunt is probably
woven through muscles and nerves and is now causing pain. I will not be going
to have my spine manipulated again by any surgeon. Every time I have done
that... I have come close to death.

I have tried just about every narcotic out there as well as relaxation,
tens units, and so much more without relief. Massaging or even touching area
harder than a light touch ... exacerbates everything for the worse.

I have had to just learn to deal with it and some days are much better than
others. But the last three weeks have been terrible. Whenever I exert myself
I think it causes my spinal fluid to be aggravated by pressure. I am not even
able to blow my nose because that hurts everything for weeks afterward.

Foolishly... I was imitating my husband snoring in the middle of the night
about three weeks ago and that is when it began. That sounds funny I know but
I have been in so much pain SINCE... that it is not funny and will teach me to
NOT try to do something that I know I should not! Or that will bite me in the
end.

I just get so damned mad at my body for being so hypersensitive! It's
beyond the ridiculous end of the spectrum.

Re: [QUAD-L] Don't Park In The Handicap Spot

2007-12-28 Thread Amy Davis
It is actually easier for me to park my boyfriends van at the lower end of the
parking lot. he is on a vent and it gives us a little more privacy to suction
or empty caths if needed. Plus I park sideways in 2 spots so that we are not
blocked in. Looks like I cant drive but no one can get near the door that way
to block it.
My daughter is not paralyzed but is in a wheel chair at times if we have to
go shopping. She can walk short distances and we do sometimes park in the
handicapped spots so she can walk in. Then we grab a chair at the door. To
anyone else..she would look normal. But walking across the parking lot is a
journey for her. So things are not always as they seem. I do agree that some
people park in the handicapped spots when they shouldn't. But some of those
folks have heart conditions and things that just may not be visble to all of
us.

The whole point of a gimp spot is so that someone who uses a wheelchair can
get the damn thing out of the car/van/truck,THAT’S what the extra
(cross-hatched)space is FOR,particularly someone with a lift who can’t get
out otherwise and would get blocked in without that extra space being
respected.I can’t count how many time some asshole has parked on the
cross-hatching making impossible for me to get back into my car (without
getting someone to move it or waiting for the asshole). They always reply the
same way,no apology just some lame excuse. The same one I hear when I have to
wait outside a larger stall in an airport shitter for the guy to wipe his ass
mid-turd because I pounded on his door saying “you better be in a
wheelchair!” . I always asks “do you know why they build this bigger
stall?” they never answer the question and rarely apologize, way too many
actually get mad.
Back to parking spots,I think people who need a van with a lift or ramp or
extra space for a WHEELCHAIR would love a spot at the far end of the parking
lot that the lazy,”sore-toes” or lazy sore-toes wouldn’t use leaving them
open for people who actually NEED them.
To answer the people that think there are too many spots that nobody ever uses
which makes them frustrated (whaaainnh!) To gimps like me the spots are always
FULL with people that can walk and are very far from needing a wheelchair. They
start limping extra heavy when I cruise by from the other end of the parking
lot where I had to park against a curb or wall where no-one can block me in.

I would love to have a bed next to my boysfriends bed. Side by side would be
nice. But it would be nice if we had matching beds...even a second bed that

make it hard to do his care too. If you had two beds side by side...then they

Re: [QUAD-L] Trachs

2007-10-10 Thread Amy Davis
THis is a very scary decision I am sure for you to have to make. But you gotta
breathe!
Trachs are very intimadating for caregives and patients. But once you get
used to it...it is like everything else, just a part of your routine care.
Passey Muir valves do work but it does take some training and gettting used
too. You cannot just pop it on and hope it works. my BF keeps his trach
uncuffed and he can actually talk on the vent without the PM valve.
My bf is on a vent and it does not stop him from doing things he enjoys. ( I
am sure he would argue that point!). It does take more time to deal with daily
issues related to trachs and vents. The biggest danger is the trach plugging up
due to secretions. Anyone that takes care of you MUST know how to change the
trach in case of an emergency. Infection is definetly a problem. Anytime you
have a direct opening into the body...this is going to be an issue. Keep it
clean and dry as possible. A split dressing under the trach with a very small
amount of desitin will help to keep the skin dry. Good pulmonary care like
breathing treatments, Chest percussion and keeping the secretions loose so they
do not stop up the trach are the basic principles.
The vent you are speaking of is small and portable. If you depend on the vent
to breathe make sure you DO NOT leave home without any supplies you need!!!
This is very important. Make sure you have an extra charged battery, and at
least 1 extra tubing, cannulas, collars...anything that you may need. Even if
you don't think you will need itTAKE IT! We just have a bag and keep
everything packed in that. Just grab it and go when you are traveling. You
never know when you will have an emergency or snag a circuit and get a hole in
the tubing. Anything is possible and will happen when you least expect it or
get into a hurry.
My best advice...teach your caregivers to take their time...make sure the
trach care is done right. And keep it clean and dry around the trach site. And
always be prepared for anything that could happen. THEN RELAX!
  Good luck and best wishes.
  Amy

Like a lot of MD quads, I have breathing troubles and use a Pulmonetics LTV
1000 volume ventilator. I've been on a noninvasive protocol, mask at night and
mouthpiece by day, but I'm starting to have problems keeping my sats and CO2
decent. So I'm having a tracheotomy (in December, likely) and I'll be able to
hook my vent up to that and get breathing support more easily than
noninvasively.
I have heard trach horror stories-- does anybody use a vent via trach? If you
do, is it a huge infection problem, does the Passy-Muir valve really work, how
hard is the care? I'm afraid on this one. It seems really intimidating. Any
advice from a trached person would be most welcome.
Thanks very much.

Re: [QUAD-L] advice on bowel program

2007-10-10 Thread Amy Davis
It seems that everyone has a different bowel program. Guess different things
work for different people.

My boyfriend seems to have a very simple program. It is called DIL. (Digital
internal...something something...not sure what that stands for exactally).

Every morning we turn him to his left side. And simply stimulate his bowel to
move by inserting a gloved finger into the rectum. Be sure to use a
lubricant...we use vaseling or prep-H to prevent and help with any hemorrhoids.
By stimulating the rectum..his bowels move. He ususally has a bowel movement
everyday...but not always. He has only had a couple of accidents and usually
that was caused by antibiotics that caused diarrhea. If his bowel do not move
or seem to be hard after 2 days, we give him 30cc of Milk of Mag before bedtime
and it usually works by the next morning. If not we repeat it at bedtime
again...usually 2 doses will do the trick.

It has been 5 years and this is till working for him.

Re: [QUAD-L] what causes a syrinx

2007-07-18 Thread Amy Davis
What kind of test can they do to determine if you have a syrinx? My Boyfriend
has been having severe pain with no apparent cause. I am wondering if this may
be what is causing the problem. Pain is mostly in his legs but some in the
arms.

RONALD L PRACHT [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:well the causes of a syrinx can
be argued, but basically anyone with a spinal cord injury has set the stage to
potentially get one

most people with an injury develope a cyst at their injury site(harmless),
but in some cases these cyst fill up with spinal flyuid and en large to devlope
a syrinx

basically any movement, bending, twisting, lifting, screaming..can cause
the syrinx to enlarge even further.

now if the syrinx grows downward, not much trouble other than pain, if it
grows to the sides of the cord much pain can be felt..now if it grows
upwards your function can be taken away.

they usually wont operate unless significant loss of function has occurred,

Re: [QUAD-L] After death

2007-04-15 Thread Amy Davis
Everyone has their own opinion on this, I am sure. So here is mine. I have NO
IDEA! I know there have been times in my life when it has been influenced by a
guidiance or spirit or GOD. I think all religion have the same basic principle.
Believe in a higher power. Be good to one another. Basically be nice!
I know when bad things happen everyone says why did God let it happen. And
that things, like becoming a quad, happen for a reason. I kind of think that is
bull. I think accidents happen to good or bad people. It is how you deal with
the situation that makes it ok or hell to deal with. You can become a quad and
sit and dwell and get pissed at the world or feel sorry for yourself. I know
everyone has these feelings sometimes. But you can also use your experiences to
make a difference for someone else.
Life does not always come out like we plan. But it is like going on a trip.
The fun part...the most exciting parts are the ones that were not planned. Like
getting lost or finding a neat place that you did not know existed along the
road. If everything went as planned it would be kind of boring to know what was
coming next every single second of our lives. The good parts are the parts that
we did not even know was coming.
I am not sure what exist in the afterlife..but I know there is no harm in
being a good person. If there is a God...I know that he does have a sense of
humor. And I am sure we keep him entertained here. And a lot of the times I am
sure he is shaking his head and wondering how we do the things we do to each
other.
Ok..I have rambled on and still have not figured out if there is an afterlife
or not. I know that I intend to make the best of this life. The restwell, I
will find out when I go down that road too.

Re: [QUAD-L] sex

2007-04-08 Thread Amy Davis
Ok...I always have to jump in on this subject. I am an Ab girlfriend of a
quad...(Hi honey!). Sex is not an issues as far as I am concerned. I think he
worries more about it than I do. First of all there is more than one way to
please a woman. I very much enjoy the intimacy that we have. I have never been
so close to anyone. It takes a special bond to get over the embarrasing issuses
of sex and quad-dom. You have to be very open and have an open mind to new
ideas. The only issues that I have is lack of privacy and time. For
me...satisfaction is not a problem. I am sure that HE would be more happier
with more orgasms for his part...wouldn't we all...LOL. I am not sure how to
say what I am trying to get accross. If you truly love someone then sex will
work itself out. If you are with the right partner then any issues can be
worked around with a little creativity. I am sure some AB's that know we are in
a relationship have their heads spinning trying to figure us out!
Just be open and talk honsestly with your partnerif they are not
comfortable with the situation...then get a new partner. Guys...quit worring so
much and relax! I promise that sex for women is mostly in our
heads...compliment us..makes us feel special and wanted. That is what we all
need most. If young guys would learn this from the beginning they would have it
made. Some things do get better with age. HAVE FUN!

2007-02-05 Thread Amy Davis
My boyfriend and I have stayed at the holiday inn express a couple of times.
You can get a handicapped room. It had a queen size bed and we were able to use
a hoyer without any problems. I always go in before I get him out of the van
and make sure the room is ok and that I can use a hoyer. Some hotels beds are
on risers and a hoyer will not go under them. Some holiday inn expresses have
suites with 2 bedrooms and that works well when we travel with someone other
than just us.
They have always been gracious about helping us with anything we need. And
believe me...a night out is always needed.

Re: [QUAD-L] Hotels

2007-02-05 Thread Amy Davis
One more piece of advice. Once we stayed in a motel in adjoining rooms with
some of his family. We locked the security lock on the inside of our room door.
We accidently let the adjoining door close and Si was locked in! We went to get
another card key from the desk. But we could not get into the room because of
the security lock. We had to call maintance to come in and use a special tool
to get the door open. The bad thing was that he was on a vent in the room by
himself. We were terrified that he would pop off or need to be suctioned before
we could get in.
You never know what can happen when you travel..make sure you have 2 days
worth of supplies and at least 1 extra of any piece of equipment that you use
at home. We just pack a bag with things we may need...just in case... and leave
it in the van. A different bag has supplies and clothes for the day.
And no matter how well I plan, I always manage to forget something. You
sometimes have to improvise. Go with a sense of humor and a lot of patience.
Take your time and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it. People
generally are glad to lend a hand.
  Most of all HAVE FUN!

[QUAD-L] Any tricks?

2007-01-22 Thread Amy Davis
Hi guys. Just wondering if you guys have any special tips that you use. For
instance...for my boyfriend..we use velcro strips for EVERYTHING. To hold vent
tubes in place. As leg straps. And to hold his hands on the chair. We also use
those plastic ties that slide thru..not sure what they are called. But they
come in different sizes. Use them to hold wires in place on his chair. We have
even used them to hold the chair together when it has been broken. Also bungee
cords...those little elastic straps with hooks on both ends...come in handy to
keep his control arm in place so it does not fall out of his reach. And keeps
his vent in place on the back of the chair so it does not swing around and fall
off.
Just looking to see what other ideas you guys have come up with. It always
helps to learn new things.
  ThanksAmy

Re: [QUAD-L] Aids stealing your meds

2006-11-11 Thread Amy Davis
Hi Mark...I am a caregiver myself. If your aid is addicted to pain meds then you need to find someone else. Sounds like she is there to feed her habit. Your needs should come first. There is good help out there. Does she work though a company? If she does then you need to notify them. She should not be working on drugs. She is responsible for your care. If you hired her privately...then you need to have a very frank talk with her. Talk with family memebers who can put your meds in a safe place..maybe leave only a few out in the bottle and hide the rest. Yes, it is a shame that people have to hide their belongings in their own house but it happens. You need to address this problem soon. Not worth being miserable and in pain in your own home. Good luck. AmyRollinOn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hey People, How many here have an aid that steals your pain medication? I'm so f*ing mad because I have a uti and you all know how seriously painful they are and my meds came up missing a week after I filled them again this month. I'm really upset because this girl has been with me since I moved home 5 years ago and is the best help I've had but I can't take it no more, I'm in agony right now but what upsets me the most is how helpless I feel. It just pisses me off that a person who supposedly cares forme can take advantage of me being disabled just to get off and not give a shit that I'm in so much freakin pain.
