Re: [qubes-users] Re: Is Fedora Really A Good Choice For QubeOS?

2017-01-05 Thread Vít Šesták
I have seen much more systemd hates than proper arguments against systemd. But
if systemd is really wrong, this kind of debate does not contribute for
rejecting it.

If there is a proper argument against systemd for dom0, I hope Qubes developers
will hear it. But they will hardly move to Slackware (or another non-systemd
distro) just for sake of getting rid of systemd. I guess that without a good
argument for it*, there will be always something more important giving better
improvement, requiring less effort and indroducing less risks.

*) I am not stating there is not any reasonable argument. There might be one I
haven't realized. But if there is any, it should be mentioned in a proper way.

[qubes-users] migration std. linux -> qubes : how integrate "old" user data

2017-01-05 Thread haaber
Hello,

the question is in the title. I want to migrate from a standard linux
distro (debian) to qubes. I have an internal with my old /home/ and I
have the same content on an external hdd. The experimental qubes install
went on an SDD. I guess that within qubes I should separate my old /home
content in the appropriate qubes, otherwise I loose a big part of the
aimed security. So just adding the (encrypted) /home to dom0 or
somewhere else does not seem an intelligent way to procede.

Should I rather

a) shrink the luks system, generate a new one next to it, migrate say
work into the new, delete work on old etc. to generate one luks volume
per cube? OR

b) Since the install is new, re-do it, let qubes reformat the internal
hdd as /home and then fetch my data from the backup?

Thank you! Bernhard

This is what I did: Fresh install on new SSD, configure suitable AppVM, import
data from HD backup, try to work with Qubes for a while.

The last step is the most tricky, I'm discovering hat real-use scenario is
different from what I planned, specially devising the different AppVMs and
their role.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: Is Fedora Really A Good Choice For QubeOS?

2017-01-05 Thread Fred
The LUKS issue was all about getting a root shell as opposed to being
able to defeat LUKS or get the keys or decrypt the data. I know this was
a bit misreported in the press.

A bigger issue is if /boot is not encrypted. And with modern GRUB there
is no need for it not to be. Someone could then use this shell to put a
keylogger in /boot process then they could use this vulnerability to do
some damage. But the same is true from booting from removable custom
media to access the encrypted partitions.

[qubes-users] Resizing Terminal Window inside of Kali template cloned from Debian or Kali VM causes VM crash

2017-01-05 Thread morfblau
Lenovo T420
Qubes OS 3.2 R3.2

After following the instructions for setting up Kali using the Debian template
(https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/pentesting/kali/) and installing Kali tools using
the Katoolin option, I have found that attempting to resize the "Terminal"
application window within either the Kali template or the VM created from the
Kali template causes the VM to crash (green dot changes to yellow dot within
Qubes VM Manager, terminal window disappears).

- Start VM using Terminal App shortcut
- Terminal appears, green dot next to Template or VM in VM manager app as
expected
- Attempt to Resize terminal window using mouse to grab corner of window and
make it larger
- Terminal window frame flickers, along with the Window Manager Panel at the
bottom of the screen
- Terminal window disappears, VM icon changes to yellow in VM Manager. VM must
be manually shut down using VM manager or CLI.

This occurs ONLY with the modified Kali template / Kali VM created by cloning
the Debian template. It does not occur with the Terminal app in the built-in
Debian template. The Kali template was cloned from Debian and then "apt-get
distupgrade" was performed, which presumably is what is causing the difference
in behavior between the built-in Debian template and the modified Kali template.

Adding "xterm" as a shortcut from the Apps manager also works properly. So
just avoid using "Terminal" from Debian VMs updated from the "stretch" repos
and you should be fine.

Hi Bernhard,

Neither of these options seem particularly attractive to me. There is
no need to have separate volumes per qube, and I'm not clear why you
would want the hdd as /home, since that would put your data in dom0,
rather than in a qube.
If the motivation for (b) is space concerns then you should be aware that
most of the space is taken up with /var where the qubes are stored. You
can store some qubes on separate disks and link them to the SSD.

Perhaps you are in the process of migrating, and are going to dual boot
for a while, or perhaps you are ready to take the plunge. I don't know.
Either way you could start with what you have. Whether it will be easy
depends on how much you segment your life at the moment.

If you are going to dual boot, then you could take the opportunity to
segment the data in /home so that it works with Qubes. If you do this
for a while then you will end up with the data separated in to folders
representing the security domains that you want to use in Qubes. It's
quite clunky attaching the HDD to separate qubes: an alternative approach
might be to start copying data in to the qubes and then rsyncing back to
the HDD on those occasions when you want to use the data in your Debian
install.

I can't say I would recommend that method but it is workable and can
ease the transition to full time Qubes use.
If you are already at that stage, then you have probably already thought about
the domains you want to have - I would create a few qubes to fill the needs in
each, and start moving data from the HDD in to those qubes. As the
balance of space usage changes you might want to resize the /home
partition on the HDD and create a new encrypted partition to store some
of the larger qubes.
You may find that you want to keep some data on a partition that you can
attach to a number of different qubes. Or you could create a storage
qube with large allocated /home and use it to share data between qubes
using ssh or samba. Qubes is flexible enough for all this.

I hope this helps somewhat

All depends on what game you are referring to, and what it requires processor
and RAM wise, and the speed it requires to pass information through.

I game on Linux using Steam.

[qubes-users] Dom0 Update failed.

2017-01-05 Thread Drew White
Hi folks..

Tried to do an update on Dom0, but it's failing, and I'm not getting the
information I need to be able to resolve the issue.

Any help would be much appreciated.

yes it is possible to game on linux. I game on steam on a barebones debian
system. cs:go and dota2 are some supported games. Some games are playable with
play onlinux scripts using wine. But in Qubes-os vms do not have 3d graphics
rendering, so you can't really game in qubes. It might be possible to
pasthrough your gpu to a vm, but this is not officially supported and not too
many people have been sucessful.

On another note and imo, playing online games defeats any security you have
every time. There is no such thing as security on your machine if gaming
online. Especially when your gpu gets infected. Gaming online is where most
cyber criminals get started. They are the most hacked networks. It is where
Edward Snowden learned to hack people, Sabu, Kim Dotcom was notorious in q2.
Online gaming communities, where only hackers are left playing, are as
dangerous as irc or the dark web. They don't just want to ragequite you ddos
the game offline and steal your credit cards, they want to destroy your
hardware. Especially if you are not one of them (Russian)

Some argue if you have a separate gpu that is isolated from dom0 and only loads
in a vm then maybe this would be safe. But I still have my doubts.

Im more talking about a Windows VM here. Is it enough to pass through a GPU in
the devices tab of the settings or is there anything else that should be done?

And how would it be performance-wise overall?

Especially with Windows 8+ cause theres no official Qubes Tools Support there.

I have an issue like this sometimes on an old lappy wifi. Not sure what causes
it, but maybe a problem with the kernel. see if you reloading the module
helps instead of rebooting. thats what I have to do. but I can go weeks
without it happening before it happens. Making think something happens in the
air. but might have to make a bug report to fedora or debian.

It's simple. You selected arbitrary subset of update, apparently
excluding packages required by those you've selected.

Thanks for your efforts to assist with this. I copied the text you posted and
saved it as a .desktop text file as you suggested, and then moved it into the
/usr/share/applications folder of dom0, and then rebooted.

It doesn't seem to have had any effect, though it's hard to tell since the xfce
"start menu" doesn't appear to even have a "system tools" menu entry to begin
with, unlike the kde plasma one. There is a "System" menu at the very top, but
that contains a whole gigantic mess of shortcuts from every VM I have, all
jumbled together in one big chaotic list. However, clumped together midway
through that menu are the few dom0 shortcuts I still have (apper, DispVM
Browser etc) and there doesn't seem to be any new item referencing the xfce4
terminal.

Is there anything else I can try at this point? I've noticed that I keep
getting notified that Qubes Dom0 updates are available, but whenever I run sudo
qubes-dom0-update it reports no packages to download, nothing to update.

Any other ideas or suggestions would be more than welcome. Thanks.

I am having the same issue but I never modified any 'conf file'. I am
attempting to install Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The VM starts and I get the
"Starting Windows" animating/glowing icon, which loops forever but no progress
ever gets made beyond that.

I am at a loss as what to do, seeing that I've followed all instructions
carefully and have no interactivity at this stage of the process. Thanks.

It checked dependencies, it found there were none required. If they were
required, it would have gotten the dependencies for the packages I requested to
install. That is how it works because I didn't tell it to NOT get the
dependencies.

If you look at the versions, it said I already have version 10 installed, so it
skipped it. Why did it skip subversion 10 and not install 12 when it's supposed
to update and do subversion 12?

[qubes-users] PCIe Passthrough

2017-01-05 Thread Drew White
Hi folks,

I'm wanting to assign a PCIe Socket to a guest before power-on, so it's never
assigned to Dom0, is there any way to achieve this?

Or am I stuck only assigning a device to the guest after it's powered on?

[qubes-users] Trouble seeing software installed in template vm in an appvm that uses the template

2017-01-05 Thread Brian LoBue

Hi All,

I've installed ruby in a fedora 24 template vm via "sudo yum install
ruby". Everything seems fine at that point. "which ruby" points to
"/usr/bin/ruby". When I start an appvm that is based on the fedora 24
template vm "which ruby" indicates that no application is available. I'm
guessing I've missed something obvious. Is there something I need to do
to update the appvm's after installing software on the templatevm? Any
help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Brian

Did you create the appvm after the template updated?
if not, as root, run "updatedb", then try again.
