If she can fit a 24 bike, you have a lot more options over 20 bikes.

They're quite heavy, but the older Trek 220 kid bikes are pretty cool.
Steel frame, rigid fork, decent serviceable components. Typically very low
use. Can find on CL pretty easily cheaply:

[RBW] FS: 56 cm Atlantis

2013-04-16 Thread Matt Gilkey

Hello,

My name is Matt and I have a problem. I love bikes. Steel ones.
Lugged ones . Oooh green ones, I really like green bikes. As a result I
have too many bikes and would like to get down to just two. So I am selling
my Atlantis, which I never thought I would do. It is a great bike that I
really love; I just don’t use it that much anymore. It is a very versatile
frame. I have run it with 26x1.5 in tires, 26x2.1 tires, and 650b hetres. I
have used it for mountain biking, road rides, and camping.
I purchased the frame about 3 years ago from a list member in pristine
condition. Since then it has seen a lot of use, and has a lot of beusage in
the form of paint scratches. No dents or dings. Most of the scratches are
from being on a bike rack and from chain suck. The worst set of scratches
is on the top of the down tube and is from the pedal of another bike on a
bike rack. I have painted over most of the scratches with the correct color
paint. There is also a very small gouge in the drive side chain stay from
the chain getting stuck. I have taken multiple before and after pictures in
order to be as detailed and honest as I can. Also, I have removed most of
the shellac drips shown in the pictures. I want whoever gets this bike to
be as happy with it as I was, so please ask questions. I am asking $1700
which includes shipping to the lower 48. Sale includes the 26in wheels (not
the 650b ones), 26x1.5 schwalbe marathon racers, and panaracer smoke/dart
26x2.1 tires. Bottle cages are not included. Below is a build list. Please
contact me off list at *mg...@hotmail.com* mg...@hotmail.com. Thanks.

It's funny b/c I saw your message earlier and was thinking about what

bittersweet truth to that...

My 6.5yo princess rocks a Novara (bumble bee yellow) w pink Newbaums
tape, and a rather horrible-wonderful pink Schwinn w full fenders
etc, both 16, but she should probably move up to 20 or larger.
That's where the tres ancien juvenile (450A/22.5 tire) racer frame
which Mather mocks comes into play - 24/520iso wheels should fit
it... but even that is a boat anchor.

Pretty sure there were some cool mini-UJB Fujis out there. Perhaps
time for Riv to take the Rosco Bubbe project off the shelf...

[RBW] Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

2013-04-16 Thread bobish
All upright and swept back here. Have not tried the Bosco because the a-bar has
been such a revelation that I can't imagine improvement. I've also a steel
h-bar one one bike (took it off an old schwinn--it's probably a wald). I find
this sort of riding position ideal for many reasons.

- I can sit upright all I want for comfort but can easily crouch down and honk
away when I feel like being in a more aero position.
- Weight back: excellent control of braking and shifting (bar ends) in all
conditions.
- Lots of usable hand positions if you're the least bit experimental.
- Wide selection of cheap brake levers that will mate with brake of your
choice.

I see no downsides. Over the years, I've tried different drop bars, m-bars,
trekking bars, etc, to convince myself I'm wrong about upright, swept back
h-bars and have yet to succeed in doing so.

Perry give me my a-bar or give me death--well that may be a bit extreme Bessas

[RBW] Short Rear Cassette Hub?

In the recent Suntour thread Philip mentioned the Short Rear Cassette
Hubhttps://stan-pun.squarespace.com/hubs/(O.L.D. 120mm). It's not listed in
the new Merry Sales/Manny Acosta

Anybody know anything about it? Is there a comparable hub available out

Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

Thanks for bringing up those points, Jan - I'm not specifically
against freewheels. My experience was that I regularly bent axles on
my old mtb which had a freewheel and never had that problem with any
freehubs. My recollection was that the mtb (which was a six speed
1983 drivetrain) had narrower cones than my XT and DuraAce freehubs.
But again, no data to back that up.

That's not the only, or even the worst, problem with freewheels. By
design, pedaling tightens a freewheel. On a tandem or on a bike ridden
by a very strong rider, they get screwed on so tight it's difficult if
not outright impossible to remove them. What's more, the tremendous
force needed (we're talking about six foot cheater bars here, no
exaggeration) is channeled through a couple of small notches or a
handful of splines, which readily strip out.

And I guess the point I was really trying to make stemmed from your
comment about the loss of tooling, expertise and the necessary
economies of scale involved in making a quality freewheel today.
Since most of the bicycle market probably is less likely to support
it, it seems freewheel production isn't likely to increase. But since
there are plenty of freehubs around, why not continue to let them make
the ratchety bits and focus on making something that is not designed
to shift in a crosswind. Okay, that's overstating it, but it seems to
me that creating a longer-toothed cassette of longer-wearing material
 might be a simpler option.

I just recall walking into the old shops and looking at the cog board
in the back. It seems like it should be comparatively easy to come up
 with a similar solution.

That assumes there's actually a market for straight-cut sprockets. Even
back in the 1970s they were actively searching for tooth profiles that
made shifting easier. Remember Shimano's wavy teeth? I doubt the total
market for such cassettes in this country would even be as large as the
readership of this google group.

Though I'm ignorant of any constraints which are in place for makers
having to license the interface spline from Shimano.

The bearings spacing on most cassette hubs is no different
from that of a freewheel hub. With the exception of Shimano
and Mavic and a few small makers, all freehubs have the hub
bearings under the flanges, more or less. As long as the axle
is properly designed, that is not a problem.

The problem with most freewheel hubs were the thin axles. They
were designed for 4-speed and 115 mm spacing. With that short
overhang, no problem. Then they added another 5 mm on the
drive-side for 5-speed, and it was getting marginal. Then they
added another 6 mm to use 6-speed, and the design no longer
worked. They now had more than twice the lever as before, yet
kept the diameter of the axle the same. It's surprising that
it worked as well as it did!

Adding grooves in the axle on both sides made the problem
worse. (Who needs to adjust their hub on both sides? Maxi put
the grooves on the non-drive side only, so you adjusted only
 that side.)

There are plenty of freewheel hubs that don't break axles.
Don't conclude from a poor execution that the entire concept
is flawed. Cassette hubs have their own design problems. The
biggest one is that the bearings under the cassette have to be
 relatively small.

Mark, when you took a spin on my Disc Trucker, you may have noticed the bar was
a swept back design (a Fatback segmented Ti bar), although the sweep is modest
compared to the Albatross or Bosco bars. I also use the Soma Clarence, which is
similar, on two other bikes. I would urge you to consider the Clarence.
Everybody seems to like it. Unfortunately it doesn't come in silver. Back and

Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-16 Thread Steven Frederick
I know what you're talking about--I've had this problem a couple of times
with fatter (38+) tires. If I run the front pressure too low, it feels
darty when turning--the front dives into the turn too quickly and feels
unstable. Tracking in a straight line is affected, too--it comes off it's
line too easily and feels unstable. Usually adding 5-10psi is enough to
resolve it without too much impact on comfort...

Hard to explain... I just don't feel as in control as with 33-35mm tires.
Have to adjust slow-speed line more often. Can't ride hands-free at high
speed (still okay at medium). Fast downhill left-right turn transition
feels much less solid. I think raising the pressure would deal with some of
this (had similar issues with 33.3 JB's until I raised psi) but that
negates the benefits of fat tires.

So still playing with them and like a lot, but at this point, high
volume/low pressure has some trade offs.

Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

2013-04-16 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Steve P nails it. Many of these old-skool design ideas might fill a niche
within a niche within a niche. Given the previously mentioned issues with
freewheels, and not many upsides except low cost, the people still using them
are devoted antiquarians, those who spec dept store bikes, and those of us in
the business of fixing 1970s bike boom bikes. It's hard to see a new $50+
freewheel being a hit with any of those groups. And freewheel connoisseurs are
not wearing out freewheels fast enough to be much of a target market. Obviously
Shimano and the smaller companies who make FWs abandoned the high-end segment
of that market years ago.

[RBW] FS: 55cm Betty Foy New in Box

2013-04-16 Thread Charlie

Purchased the Betty Foy about a year ago. I few months after that, a 55cm
Yves Gomez in British racing green with the cream head tube showed up on
the Web Special page and you can guess what happen then. Thus the Betty
still sits in the box - I took it out of the box just once to inspect it
when I received it.

I just got back from my first semi significant ride on the Yves Gomez and
it is a suburb riding bike.

Anyway, $900 for the Betty and I would prefer a local sale so I don't have
to ship although I suspect shipping will probably be necessary

Located in CT

PS: I also have a never built 52 cm original Rivendell mixte for sale.
$2000 - contact me if interested.

[RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

2013-04-16 Thread Garth

I use the Alba bar on two bikes and find it just right , for me. I
considered a Bosco to try, but realized it is much further swept back
toward the rider than even an Alba bar, and this is not what I want. With
bar end brake levers and thumbshifters located inside the curves, I have a
HUGE choice of hand positions !! From more upright to more aero for big
headwinds (as if it really makes a difference at the end of the day
... lol).

A version with more rise would be a cool try, but nonetheless I love it as
it is :)

BTW ... I ran across a new-er version of Nitto's stem adapters for
threadless stems ... the MTC-04 Long ! It's a cold forged 225mm long with a
knurled mounting surface for the stem. I prefer using these to traditional
stems as it is sooo simple to change stems and bars ! VO/Genetic makes a
nice looking one also, as well as the regular length Nitto MTC-04 and
slightly longer MTC-12.

Re: [RBW] Tarptent advice?

2013-04-16 Thread Scott Henry
No experience in the tarptents, but this is the regular one-man tent that I
use.

http://store.eurekatent.com/spitfire-1-tent

Very small, very light and easy to setup, pack and carry. Cheap too.
I have about 40 nights in it over a few years and never a problem. Once
was a 3 week stay and for that I'd have liked to have a bigger tent, but
the size to weight issue is hard to overcome.

Cheers,
Scott

I want to get something lightweight that I can use when I am going
somewhere that I am not sure about setting up the hammock.

I am big (6'3) and don't want any part of sleeping in open air/dealing
with bugs, so would need to get one of the tarptents that actually closes
up in order to be able to sleep at night.

Looking at the tarptent site, it's tough to determine which of their
options works best for what I am trying to do, so I figured I would ask you
 guys.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone have a tarptent that they don't use/don't
like and want to get rid of?

 Much obliged!

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

2013-04-16 Thread René Sterental
Over the last several years, ever since I discovered Rivendell, their bikes
and their fit philosophy, I have slowly (until this year) realizing that my
preconceived notions regarding drop bars as better and upright bars as
worse have changed, and I went from being in lots of neck pain with drop
bars (Noodles), then Touring bars (first time ever I rode pain free),
through the original Bullmoose bars and now finally with the Bosco bars and
similar variations. The only drop bar that I'm comfortable in now is the
Grand Bois Randonneur, however I have it positioned quite higher than the
saddle. Last remaining Noodles on my Homer are likely going to be removed
soon as well. In the end, I expect that out of my four Rivendells, three
will end up with some variation of upright bar (didn't like the Albatross
the only time I've tried them) and possibly one will still keep the GB
Randonneur bars.

I'm amazed at how stubborn I've been to recognize the benefits of riding
upright, but it really wasn't until the Bosco bars when I realized they
offered me all positions instead of locking me on just one. That is also
the reason I installed reverse brake levers on the Bosco bars; they allow a
clean uninterrupted bar where I can position my hands anywhere while still
maximizing access to the brake levers.

Now that the Boscos are offered in three widths, I believe they are the
most versatile bar.

René

Well I've taped the bars but still dialing in the overall ride of Saluki.
So I may need a tiny adjustment but since they're already on the bike I may

Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

2013-04-16 Thread PATRICK MOORE
From my own experience with 5 thru 10 shifting, all manual (didn't index
after circa 1993 or 4 until I got the 7 sp DA for the Ram) I would say that
the problems below come solely from excessively narrow spacing -- it, too
many cogs -- and even that, perhaps, due to using the wrong levers (levers
with smaller barrels seem to work better with tighter squeezed cogs) or
perhaps, often, simply to lack of skill. While I can certainly see the
benefit to 9 or even 10 speed spacing in certain very idiosyncratic cases,
I think that a normal 8 speed Hyperglide cassette will last for many miles
and shifter perfectly with most friction levers as long as you take the
trouble to adjust things properly -- notably your shifter mounting screws
-- and take the trouble to learn the technique.

I think, therefore, that if Shimano and others simply brought back 8 speed
systems with friction options, we'd be where we need to be in respect of
drivetrains. No? I agree that new systems are not, from the standpoint of
both use and money, the best solution.

That said, I am surprised how well the low end Shimano 9 speed systems on
cheap mountain bikes that have been neglected for years still shift very
well without need for adjustment.

[RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

2013-04-16 Thread clayton
Here is what I would like to see them make. Cassette hub, 7 or 8 speed
WIDE ratio cassette, Bomb proof (literally) bar end index shifters with
friction option or disc brake levers (maybe brifters, crash proof though,
and sealed against crashing in a pumice dust and sand pile, don't ask) and
all wrapped up in a nice silver polish or black matte anodization with
engraving. All built for the long haul and severe service.

I am pretty much done with shimano. I bought their new Deore Xt dynasys
stuff (10 speed) and discovered it won't work with 10 speed bar end
shifters that no longer have a friction option). I replaced my drop bars
with Sycip swept bars and put on the Dynasys mountain bike shifters. I
promptly broke the plastic casing and bent the steel guts when I tried to
rotate the shifter on the bar which wasn't even that tight. My son uses X0
stuff and it seems to be much better made. Next time..Sorry Shimano,
I've been loyal, but Suntour or Sram is getting my money next time.

electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the
enjoyment of cycling. In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to

Re: [RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

2013-04-16 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That is interesting, but you can get at least a little of these benefits by
running a 7 speed Shimano cassette body while keeping the 135 mm spacing
instead of 126. You can do this either by retrofitting the shorter body on
a later, 8-9-10 speed hub, or by retrofitting a longer axle on a 7 speed
wheel. I've done this and even with a 130 mm spaced rear wheel the
remaining dish is very little.

Why does JJ choose those rather odd and large teeth combinations? They
would do very well, for me, on pavement with, say, a 52/42 ring combo or,
for closer gaps, with a 52/48 half step ring combo. Of course, those are
meant for off road use, but you'd still want pretty large rings to get a
usable series.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

2013-04-16 Thread EGNolan
I only have two bikes at the moment; a cargo bike I share w/ my wife and my
Raleigh International mut. The Yuba has Albatross the Raleigh has
Bosco's. I'd given a lot of thought to swapping them around because of the
sweep on the Bosco's and the relatively short TT on the Raleigh, but after
some strong headwinds this week, the Bosco's have proven themselves well. I
have 3 solid positions on the that cover me well. I don't typically log
long days, but rain or shine, snow or sleet, wind or well...none, the
upright bars serve me well for my 10 mile (one way) commute daily and the
few 30+ mile days I've been on the bike. The miles seem to pass a bit
slower, but my attitude seems to be different when I hop on a bike w/
upright bars than compared to the same bike with drops. There's something
to it, I have a bit more fun.

I initially got onto upright bars becuase I've had long lasting, recurring
shoulder problems, but I don't have pain w/ drops if they're above the
saddle and close enough to me, but I prefer upright now, regardless.

I also went with a 13cm stem for the Bosco bars on my Hunqapillar. Seems to
provide the perfect distance for both upright and forward leaning when
going faster. Might try the narrower ones on the Atlantis as I switch the

Re: [RBW] Campus pedal inquiry

I like the Shimano PD-A530 campus pedals (apparently you can even mount
reflectors. huh.), but the platform isn't very grippy. I'm gonna add a
couple drill-in spikes from the Rivendell site to mine.

The bear-trap style campus pedals (Shimano PD-M324 or similar) may offer
more grip. My girlfriend has those on her bike and likes them. They weigh
a tiny bit more than the A530s.

Does anyone have a campus pedal preference? You know the old one side

Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

2013-04-16 Thread Matthew J
That's not the only, or even the worst, problem with freewheels. By
design, pedaling tightens a freewheel. On a tandem or on a bike ridden
by a very strong rider, they get screwed on so tight it's difficult if
not outright impossible to remove them. What's more, the tremendous
force needed (we're talking about six foot cheater bars here, no
exaggeration) is channeled through a couple of small notches or a
handful of splines, which readily strip out.

Freewheel sticking has not been a problem for me. But I make a point to
remove the freewheel and lubricate it frequently.

BMXers - and bike polo players who put a lot of pressure on all their bike
parts more often than not use White Industries hubs.

I don't have anything against cassettes per se - and in fact just had a
wheel made with a single speed Chris King and the Jeff Jones modified 6
speed cassette - but my city and tour bikes have MaxiCar hubs and my road
bike vintage Campy hubs modified by Peter Weigle. I'm supposed to leave
those on the shelf because of stories from people in the day who probably
failed to follow basic maintenance procedures?

Finally - no problem with finding spare sprockets I'll be dead before I
wear out all my horde.

Another question about the Albatross bar. One problem is that I'm asking
the Fargo to do a very wide spread of duties, from sport tourer through
loaded grocery getter to off road machine to -- one day! -- loaded tourer.
Each has its own requirements of a bar. (So far, as I've said, the Midge is
the best compromise of all - 46 cm Noodle, 42 cm Noodle, Midge) EXCEPT for
my unfortunately and preternaturally sensitive left palm.

So: how does the Albatross do:

1. in heavy headwinds? Where do you hold on when bucking a steady 25 mph
wind?

2. On steep, dirt drop-offs? Where do you hold so that you keep yourself
secure while still being able to brake?

Maybe -- hate the thought, but just maybe -- the solution is to sell the
Fargo and use the Ram for uses 1, 2 and 4, and get a dirt-specific 29er for

Re: [RBW] Campus pedal inquiry

2013-04-16 Thread Brian Hanson
I would second the PD-A530 recommendation. I've used them on two bikes for
commuting and brevets, and they are easy to get into consistently with cleats
which I use 80% of the time. I would recommend sticky soled shoes for the flats
like FiveTen or Evolv Cruzers (best shoe ever!). No issues in the rain, but I
generally wear waterproof Sidis then as I hate wet feet.

The bear-trap style campus pedals (Shimano PD-M324 or similar) may offer more

[RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

The 120mm spacing is the key to retrofitting a Quickbeam, or any other
track bike. My Ross would be the best candidate, since it has cable
stops, and I have a derailleur claw adapter.

Problem Solvers has clamp-on DT shifter mounts, zip-tie cable guides, and a
chain tensioner than can be used as a derailleur hanger. The QB would need
cablestops fabricated, I think. Definitely post any Quickbeam hacks!

[RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

Oh yeah. I guess I forgot that the quickbeam is 120mm. The chris king SS
hub is obviously 130mm:

http://chrisking.com/hubs/hbs_sspeed

Given the fact that several people have successfully re-set the rear end of
Simple Ones to utilize 135mm Rohloff hubs though, I think 130mm might not
be too drastic of a modification, if someone were really set on the idea.

The other option might be to go *smalle*r - to a BMX 110 mm spacing. A
quick web search turns up at least one mfgr., Profile, has several single
speed cassette hubs. Looks like they even offer a 120mm upgrade too. Not
sure what the freehub interface looks like, though:

I tried Sun Tour Sprint friction shifters with 8 speed Hyperglide.
Didn't work well at all: far too much ghost shifting. I moved the
shifters to a new bike with 7 speed Hyperglide and found it worked very
well.

Also: 8 speed never had a range of gearings that began with 13. Other
than for juniors, they began with 11 or 12. Nowadays just about all you
can get in 8 begins with 11. Except on my 17 wheeled Moulton, I have
no use whatever for 11 tooth sprockets, and I would need a 44 tooth
large chain ring to get the high gear I like with a 12 tooth sprocket.
Summary: except for tandems, for me 8 speed gearing range is crap.

Seven, on the other hand, had several nice gear sets including 13-30 and
13-34. Seven also has the 14-32, which is surprisingly perfect on a
650B bike with a 39/53 double. What's more, all the 7 speed gear ranges
are still currently available, albeit not in the nice shiny versions
they once used to have, whereas just about all that's left of 8 is, as I
said, crap.

[RBW] Lost dustcover, going clipless until the replacement arrives

2013-04-16 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
It doesn't rain here during the summer, so I took advantage of the public
holiday yesterday to take the fenders off my Sam and give it a good
cleaning. Imagine my surprise when I took the right crank off (!) to clean
the chain rings and found that my right Grip King had no dust cover and I
was staring at naked grease. The left side pedal isn't spinning as nicely
as I'd like, so I took them both off and slapped on an old pair of clipless
pedals that I had around. I used to use these with SPD sandals so I thought
I'd give them a try until I can fix or replace the Grip Kings. I will order
the spare dustcover and fiddle with the bearing on the left one this
weekend. Meantime it's back to SPDs for a while.

Hope I remember how :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

2013-04-16 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've used both 15 and 16 t outer cogs by Miche. 7 speed DA on the Ram
starts with 14. 16 is the largest, but you can fudge anything as an outer
if you are willing to compromise on cassette position and # of cogs. My 14
t outer is a standard inner.

Friction shifting 9 on the Fargo now, with Silver BES -- no problem, even
with out-of-sync ramps. But I daresay I shift less than many, and am less
concerned with precision and that, as they always say, YMMAVCWV.

What's more, all the 7 speed gear ranges
are still currently available, albeit not in the nice shiny versions
they once used to have, whereas just about all that's left of 8 is, as I
 said, crap.

Re: [RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

The main advantage of the Jeff Jones short cassette is you can build a
dishless, hence stronger wheel with a range of gears for varying terrain.
I'ld have to go back and figure out all the component weights, but I
imagine even with a rear der the whole set up weighs less than a Rohloff
wheel. Of course Rohloff has more gears.

I have all upright bars, boscos on my hunqapillar and albas on my Sam.

For a while I had noodles on the Sam, but I realized I just don't like
drops as much as albas or boscos, and got rid of them. I feel like I ride
in comfort.

They are not super fun in crazy strong headwinds, but that is also the
thing that I like least in all of bike riding, so I don't think drops would
really solve that lol.

So: how does the Albatross do:

 1. in heavy headwinds? Where do you hold on when bucking a steady 25 mph

Maybe -- hate the thought, but just maybe -- the solution is to sell the

Butted steel, lugged, room for 32s plus fenders, all the eyelets you would
ever need. New bottom shimano sealed BB. Made in holland

Tall Specialized Rockhopper Frame $20 + shipping
Not cosmetically perfect but no dents or anything. I have pics i can
send. There is a deore triple converted to a single ring on there I'll leave
on.

Tubus Cosmo Silver $110 shipped

Brooks Flyer $75 shipped
Honey, black springs, cosmetically perfect. I'm not sure it's even super
broken in or anything.

32 Panaracer Pasels TGs Folding $40 shipped
I rode them a few miles a day for 2-3 months. Like new but already have
that Seattle road discolor on the gum walls.
Would trade for similar very low miles 28mm tires which I find to be the
best size for me.

Shimano XT Long Cage Rapid Rise Derailer
Low miles, excellent condition, black
Would trade for a non-rapid-rise road derailer

Shimano Bar Ends $40 shipped
Pretty good cosmetic condition. Work great.
Would trade for downtube indexable shifters

Re: [RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

2013-04-16 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
In the fat bike world, the 6-of-9 truncated cassette on a SS cassette hub
allows the chain to clear a fatter-than-spec tire/rim combination. Fat
bikes require a bit of a steep learning curve. If you're of a roadie
mindset, the tire pressures, the bottom bracket widths, the frame offsets,
and the gearing, can throw you for a loop. On my Moonlander, I have a 22/36
crank with a 12-36 10s cassette. If I wanted to run something approaching
Moonlander tires/rims on a Pugsley, I'd likely have to go to a single ring
crank and an outward-spaced truncated cassette.

Re: [RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

2013-04-16 Thread iamkeith
Sorry, Matthew - I didn't make myself clear. I simply meant that if you
really wanted to use a hub with a short cassette, it wouldn't be that
much of a stretch (no pun intended) to use a 130mm hub, where a 120 is
intended. I was referencing the Rohloff thing because people have done it,
even though it's wider yet. I realize you've thought about the 130mm
option, but weren't sure if you were aware of the previous successful hacks.

 Quite possiblly, Steve...

My thoughts were really in the context of the SunXCD comments about a
less-race oriented direction combined with the regular resurfacing of the

stay put if you choose to manually shift. It seemed like it would be a

electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the

Junzo feels the time is right to re-enter the bicycle component
business. As he puts it “the market is too race-centric; carbon fiber,
electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the
enjoyment of cycling. In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to
nature, for the environment, for our health, for the simple beauty of
cycling.” For these reasons SunXCD will focus on touring and randonneuring
components which were the focus of SunTour during its heyday.

wide-spaced rings, like 24, 34, 44. I'm the last person you should ask

 Quite possiblly, Steve...

My thoughts were really in the context of the SunXCD comments about a
less-race oriented direction combined with the regular resurfacing of the
topic of ghost shifting and tendency of current cassette designs to not
stay put if you choose to manually shift. It seemed like it would be a

long-lasting cassette of robust sprockets than hope they would tool up for

[RBW] Neck Pain, and Upright Bars/Bosco's

2013-04-16 Thread Liesl
Hi Friends, I started this post on the recent thread about switching to
uprights, but I thought I'd start a related new thread that focuses on neck
pain. As you might recall from an old post/thread, my neck pain is
formally being treated and I have some moderate deterioration in the 6-7
cervical vertebrae. Good-bye mustaches and hello Bosco's.

So specifically, I just switched to Bosco's on my little 51cm Protobleriot
single from m'bars and think all my bikes are headed in that direction. I
am loving them. I've had a couple of 20 mile days plus short errands. I
have the 58's and the big surprise here is that they are not too wide for
me at 5'2. What's even better is that they are making a difference for my
neck. The combo of having a more upright position and wider bars is that
they provide a healthy posture for both my neck (having the weight of the
head on top of the shoulders) and shoulders (being more stretched back and
out instead of rolled forward and in). Plus the Bosco's give you so many
hand positions. My only complaint is brake-cable-mitten space. Haven't
gotten it dialed in yet. No problem without mittens. Dialing in also
includes saddle adjustment.

Anyway, I can feel it making a difference in the short time I've had it set
up.

Re: [RBW] Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

2013-04-16 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I started with Moustache bars on a Quickbeam a couple of years back and
loved the combination. I've never really been a fan of drops, just never
got comfortable, so the Moustache bars were great.

Then, while visiting the Bay Area last year after an Oregon coast ride
(super), I went to Riv HQ (as I had on my previous Bay visit) and more or
less fell in love with the Hunq. The demo I rode had Albas on them and
oddly I can't say I was immediately impressed, but I ordered a Hunq with an
Alba kit build figuring I'd give them a try and...

When my Hunq arrived later last year I fiddled with positioning a bit and
discovered I loved the Alba bars. In fact I liked them so much I ordered
another set for my Quickbeam. Now I've got two bikes with Albas and think
they are both super. The M-bars are going to Hilo one of these days where I
have an RB-1 with drops that I'm just not happy with. I think the M-bars
will fix that bike right up.

The Albas give me great control in town as I'm 90% an urban rider logging
10-20 miles most days running around Honolulu. On weekends I do longer
rides and camping trips and have no trouble climbing with the Albas or
getting bit more aero on longer runs into the tradewinds.

I have some Bosco bars around I was going to use on an old bike project but
realized after I'd bought them that they'd come back a bit too far for the
size of the frame (which is really a bit small for me but still okay with
the parts I've used). I don't know exactly what I'll do with them - but
they'll be used sooner or later.

Aloha,

Bob

Re: [RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

2013-04-16 Thread Matthew J

Jim - thanks for this. Jeff Jones is clearly a fat bike denzien. But the
short cassette, I hope anyway, has applications even for those of us who
have not quite yet made our way to the fat bike world.

Re: [RBW] Re: Short Rear Cassette Hub?

2013-04-16 Thread Matthew J
Sorry, Matthew - I didn't make myself clear. I simply meant that if you
really wanted to use a hub with a short cassette, it wouldn't be that
much of a stretch (no pun intended) to use a 130mm hub, where a 120 is
intended. I was referencing the Rohloff thing because people have done it,
even though it's wider yet. I realize you've thought about the 130mm
option, but weren't sure if you were aware of the previous successful hacks.

My reasons are probably more in man from Mars territory. My road bike with
the most gears is a 12 speed. My short tourer and city bike are five and
single speed. So I was naturally attracted to which as Jim points out are
Fat Bike solutions for my off road tourer, even though it will not be a fat
bike.

And full confession - some of my design theories have not panned out in the
past. Maybe I'll be in the middle of Wisconsin this somewhere having a
what the hay dilly dilly was I thinking moment.

Oh, it has its share of scratches and one noticeable dent on the top tube.
But it has those classic lines that I can look at all day. If I'm not
riding it, which I'm about to do.

The stem is an old SRAM adjustable. I had one on my too-small Rockhopper
back in the 90s to get the bars up to a decent height. They're versatile,
but I'm not crazy about them. The adjustment will eventually get loose on
me if I yank on the bars while standing to climb a hill, no matter how hard
you tighten the adjustment bolt. I'll probly pick up a nice, tall Nitto
stem at some point.

speed cassette hubs. Looks like they even offer a 120mm upgrade too. Not
sure what the freehub interface looks like, though:

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?

2013-04-16 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Interest thread. I've tried upside-down upright bars and they all hurt my
left palm, so when I try Albatrosses, it will be in the up position.

I think this is what I'll do: if and when I sell the Fargo (because the Ram
does the pavement part so much nicer, and because I really want a ss 29er
for off road) I'll set up the 29er with Albas.

Just got back from a 3 mile grocery/PO trip + 10 mile detour with winds
30-gusting-to-40, on the Ram, coming back the last 5 miles with 34 lbs on
the Fly/Banjos. Tucked into the hooks of the 42 cm Noodles downhill in the
70, outbound, sitting upright (and standing) uphill, in the 70, inbound.
Yesterday, not quite as windy, but 7-8 miles south into 15 with higher
gusts in the hooks of the GB Maes Parallels on the 75 gofast. I like hooks
too much for aero and power in such situations and frankly, I find my drops
very comfortable. 'Cept my left palm on that Midge.

Can Albatrosses take bar end shifters? Can Albatrosses be slowly winging
their way toward my Fargo ...???

My Fargo here with criteria met.

Y'know, that may be the way to go -- turn the Fargo into a dedicated off
road machine. Thanks.
