I guess I'm one of the exceptions. Having started with an Atari 800 in 
the early '80s and "graduating" to an AT&T PC6300 in 1984 with MS DOS 
2.11, the command line is second nature. The command line per se is not 
a problem for me. It is the other issues (discussed elsewhere in this 
thread - getting the initial installation to allow me to install the 
profiles directly on eg. F: partition without having to install on C: 
and then move somewhere else) that are giving me heartburn.


I hope you have better luck with this than I do.

This is correct, the default locaton is on C: of course (at least as
long as your "documents and settings"-directory is there.
So you can
- move that entire docs&settings directory to D: or F: or whtever
- edit the profiles.ini as you said
- use the profile-manager (tools-menu in SM and in the windows
start-menu also) of SM to create a profile wherever you want after
installing it.

time, it sends me directly to the Profile Manager. It no longer 
gets me to the Import Wizard no matter what I try.

What does 'Tools|Import' bring up? That should bring up the import
wizard. If it does not show the other profiles, then the issue is that
you have them on 'F' and SM most likely doesn't know how to go and find
them.


Seamonkey should look where the profile is by looking where SM1 stored
the profile not by guessing the location to the default one.
I always have my profile on a D: drive and the migration found it, too.
(although I hve to admit I didn't start the migration wizard manually to
import several profiles like that)

will have to do a custom installation each time YOU upgrade.

I did do a custom installation which allowed me to put the program on 
partition F:. In SM1, that would also put profile on F:. However, SM2 
puts the profile and all of the mail and newsgroups on the C: partition 
under


Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey

See Robert Kaiser's uninstall instructions for verification of this 
location http://www.seamonkey-project.org/doc/2.0/install-and-uninstall

where it states

"Any version of SeaMonkey 2 or higher that you install after removing 
SeaMonkey 2 will continue to use the data from this profile folder. Note 
that SeaMonkey 1.x does not share this location of the profile folder 
and uses data from an independent location."


There is no control that I can find that will let me put the profile 
folder and all of the sub-folder any place but on C:   :(

Forgot to mention; that is 'Tools|Import' from the Mail/New window, not
the browser window.

Okay, I found it at the Mail/New window. However, when I tried it, 
SeaMonkey shut down and said it was sending a crash report. I tried it a 
second time with the same result.


I guess it's time to uninstall and install again for the 5th time.

My build identifier is

What does 'Tools|Import' bring up? That should bring up the import
wizard. If it does not show the other profiles, then the issue is that
you have them on 'F' and SM most likely doesn't know how to go and find
them.

newsgroup to it so I can test,
2. Opening the import wizard in 2.0b1 by running SeaMonkey
C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey -migration

and the import wizard comes up showing both my default 1.1.17 *and* the
newly created 'tests' profile. Tick the 'tests profile, import it,
reopen 2.0b1, and the 'tests' profile is there & working just fine.

So, for me it does indeed work. I can test on WinXP tomorrow

On my latest re-install, I get the message "SeaMonkey is already running 
but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the 
existing SeaMonkey process". The only way to close the process is to 
Ctrl+Alt+Del and kill the process. After that, going to the Seamonkey 
folder and clicking on seamonkey.exe (FYI, an 11MB file which seems way 
too large), I get the same "all ready running" message.


FYI, my operating system runs on partition C: and all my communications 
programs (including SeaMonkey) run on partition F: but that shouldn't 
make any difference.


I think it is time for me to throw in the towel on this project. I know 
you had better luck but it doesn't work for me. At least I can still run 
1.17 and that's what I will do for however many years it works.

We don't have any plans to change this, and it's not really easy to do 
either (patches for making it both easy and not disturb people not 
wanting it are welcome).
You probably will need those "manual" commandline steps if you want to 
import multiple profiles from 1.x to 2.x even in final.
I also think that fixing the slight bugs in the import functionality we 
already have is higher priority than creating a compelling and 
unintrusive multi-profile-import user interface.
What is important though is that there is a way to do it, even if it 
needs some commandline interaction.

Many thanks for trying that and letting me know the results. It should, 
therefore, work on my computer. I'm going to restore the C: partition 
and start over again to see if that works. I'll let you know what 
happens but it will take a while to do it. Thanks again for your help.

First of all Beta1 is the current one, not alpha3 ;-)

Of course the migration of more profiles would be a luxury but you can
migrate with only a few steps:

If you wish to migrate more than one profile or set the profile name,
run SeaMonkey with the following arguments (one after another):
* Seamonkey -createProfile 
* Seamonkey -P  -migration

which should just WORK is going to keep some users from upgrading, and people 
who make use of multiple profiles probably are the kind of user you want saying 
good things about a new version.
