Re: [talk-ph] Car navigation using Garmin with OSM
Hi, Again apologies for somewhat off-topic garmin posts. I have been reviewing estimated time of arrival (ETA) for garmin gps routing. I noticed that as Sehested reported, the speed calculation is over-optimistic. Due to the absence of complete maxspeed data in PH streets, I have assigned default speed limits to streets in the garmin map (not in the osm database). I followed some of rally and ianlopez's notes. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Ianlopez1115/Philippine_Tagging Garminmaps has 8 speed levels: # 7No speed limit # 670 mph / 110 kmh # 560 mph / 90 kmh # 450 mph / 80 kmh # 335 mph / 60 kmh # 225 mph / 40 kmh # 115 mph / 20 kmh # 03 mph / 5 kmh I assigned the speed limits 0-5 to osm-ph roads. The assigned speed limits for each highway type are the following: highway=motorway road_speed=5 highway=motorway_link road_class=3 highway=trunk road_speed=4 highway=trunk_link road_speed=2 highway=* motorroad=yes road_speed=4 highway=primary road_speed=4 highway=primary_link road_speed=1 highway=secondary road_speed=3 highway=secondary_link road_speed=1 highway=tertiary road_speed=3 highway=tertiary_link road_speed=1 highway=minorroad_speed=2 highway=unclassified road_speed=2 highway=pedestrian area!=yes road_speed=0 highway=living_street road_speed=1 highway=residential road_speed=2 highway=bridleway road_speed=0 highway=byway road_speed=0 highway=service service=parking_aisle road_speed=1 highway=service road_speed=1 highway=cycleway road_speed=1 highway=footway road_speed=0 highway=path road_speed=1 highway=steps road_speed=0 highway=track road_speed=1 highway=unsurfaced road_speed=1 Another important note is when there is a traffic_signal, speed is reduced to one level down. My limited testing showed better time estimation. For garmin users, please test some more and report if ETA calculations are better or needs further improvement. On Sat, Jan 9, 2010 at 4:27 PM, riber101-...@yahoo.com wrote: Hi, I have now been using OSM to navigate around Metro Manila and a trip to Mindoro and have some experience to share: On several occasions Garmin tried to guide me through on way streets going counter flow The OSM maps keeps getting better and each time I find a missing oneway info I just add it when I get home, so next time I will get the proper routing. So that should take care of that problem. Some roads are not connected as having separate ending points Guess this is due to the editors we use that doesn't warn about this. When funny routings occur I make a note and correct the issue when I get back to the computer. So time will solve this as well. Garmin routing times are overly optimistic as typical speed in Manila is 15 km/h and 20-40 km/h on SLEX Garmin often routes through narrow streets rather that using dedicated through fares The main reason Garmin is unable to provide better routing is the lack of maxspeed info for most roads. I suggest to add the maxspeed info for all roads according to the traffic code RA4136 as follows: SPEED LIMIT Passengers Cars and Motorcycle Motor trucks and buses Open country roads, with no blinds corners not closely bordered by habitations. 80 km. per hour 50 km. per hour Through streets or boulevards, clear of traffic, with no blind corners, when so designated. 40 km. per hour 30 km. per hour City and municipal streets, with light traffic, when not designated through streets. 30 km. per hour 30 km. per hour Through crowded streets, approaching intersections at blind corners, passing school zones, passing other vehicles which are stationery, or for similar dangerous circumstances. 20 km. per hour 20 km. per hour Garmin is able to use the maxspeed info to calculate the fastest route and by this automatically select roads with the higher speed limits. So I will advocate that maxspeed is added to all roads in the Philippines. Until this happens Garmin will keep preferring roads WITHOUT speed limits as is thinks they are the fastest. Openstreetmap could enrich the map experience like never before, now that some experienced mappers have started mapping shops inside a shopping mall . It definitely makes mapping easy in developing areas where most of the shops are situated side by side in a small area which is in contrast to UK/european shops which occupy large areas . Here is a small Tale of two shops : One nice lane in a bazaar of a small town I found two bakeries . One lies almost opposite to other . The nice bakery is called 'Taj bakery' other one is 'Golden Bakery ' Mapnik in a lower zoom level shows it as Golden bakery . I actually zoomed to a higher zoom level witha hope to see both bakeries . Unfortunately it could show only golden bakery :( Seeing it with data only shows the POI . I stopped mapping all the bazaars because Indian streets unfortunately are constructed as bazaars with sometimes collection of similar selling item. And I am forced to NOT map selectively some shop when I am mapping those bazaars . Selecting some shop as important and some shop as not important is very daunting task :( Higher population areas have close knit shops I am wondering why someone has not demanded for detailed mapping in those areas. Coming to extra processing power bandwidth I think its time to move ahead . A very good question posed by Alex. I have a few wide steps (~50m) in my city. It's a good start for a solution from Nathan, IMHO highway=steps area=yes is the easiest way to mark steps as area. Unfortunately no renderer show it and routing applications will have also problems without a additional way element. But this should not prevent us from tagging steps as a area. but it would need a direction tag in order for the renderers to know which way the steps went up down. I wonder where is a really need for this information. Do you have a example? A similar(ish) problem was brought up recently regarding routing over pedestrian areas. They don't have an intrinsic direction in the way that linear ways do. Was a solution found? Adding a way with the same attribution is my solution. Off the top of my head I'm thinking of a line within the area that defines the direction. it would have to be linked to the boundary by using relations(?) If steps come up as a connection between other way elements, i think we need such a line element anyway. For example we can put a relevant information on the node represent the top of our step and doing the same on the other end. I wonder how to teach a renderer drawing highway=steps area=yes in a way, everybody will recognize it as such on a map. Maybe it is easy on square shapes, but what about half circles or waves? [talk-au] Bridges and Tunnels
Hi All, I've been looking at tagwatch again and find that there are lots of bridges and tunnels without layer tags. These are not assumed and need to be added. Before we all rush out and start amending the tags I've writen a script to add layer tags to these automatically. It is working on my test server and I'm looking at running it on the osm database. The script works in a similar manner to the revert scripts and in fact uses some of the functions from there It has to be run on a server running tagwatch (not a problem on my test server). At this point in time there are about 2500 (bridges and tunnels) in Australia that don't have a layer tag. Don't do it. Automated changes almost always go wrong. And they almost always upset a mapper who really meant for it to be that way. As I said in my email it works correctly on a test server from a technical point of view and yes I agree about upsetting mappers that's why I'm asking the list. But does anyone know of a bridge or tunnel that should not also have a layer tag. They are there to go over or under something else and are physically separated. If there is no layer tag then the data is incorrect. If you believe that you are accurately detecting a mapping problem, consider creating an alarm system, like OSM Inspector, keepright or the dupenodes map. Bring the potential problems to the attention of local mappers who can then apply the changes if they are required. This is already available in josm validator and keepright but most don't seem to use or do anything with it. Or maybe it's an issue with how it's displayed in these. Maybe then the tag needs to be a fixme=Does this need to have a layer tag added? rather than changing directly to a layer tag. -- Cheers Ross ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

The changes will be revertable with also possibly a tag along the lines of added_by:automatic_layer_script to make easier identification. Each bridge that currently does not have a layer tag would have layer=1 added. Each tunnel that currently does not have a layer tag would have layer=-1 added. The script checks what is currently tagged for the way and if it already has a layer tag then it will not add a new tag and does not change the one already there. Re: [Talk-it] Garmin Etrex h
Re: [Talk-it] stampa mappa
