The app keeps throwing an error on me. Rquest denied, is all I can get from it. I did have some recent trouble with my WinEyes installation. Hello Olusegun, At no point in my statement did I attack freedom of expression, only if the signature was appropriate for this list. I, too, fully believe that freedom of expression is a human right which should not be denied to anyone. In the UK it is apparent from our own news channels, the various US news media that we have access to and Americans I know very well that there is still a level of controversy about the current US head of state. In light of that the signature I have questioned is an overtly political statement which not all US citizens would agree with. That was my sole reason for questioning the validity of the signature. I suggest that the subject should be dropped from this list. Regards, John Tel: +44 (0) 1442 259243 Mob: +44 (0) 7815 056076 -Original Message- From: Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. To be fair the first amendment only applies to any infringement by the state (I'm sure you know this already). Regarding this matter, it can allow or sensor what it deems to be inappropriate speech. So far, it has not so... I did speak with Jaws Tech Support, and the guy was plesant, and Helpful. Re: Where to find JFW Scripts
Too bad, they don't have a one-stop store for the scripts. That really will be a great miss from the WE App Central. Eventhough certain apps for WE also have been distributed outside the App Central, it still was one big resource for getting a hold of what is available. Last night, I did a search on the net, for Jaws Scripts. Sure enough, a ton of websites showed up. Here is a couple of reflections, based on my findings; hoping that any of it would prepare other users what to expect. First of all, one idea might be for you to do a more specified search. Like: Jaws scripts Thunderbird Jaws scripts Itunes Jaws scripts MSOffice . This way, you would get more directly to scripts that would cover your real needs. That is, if you have special needs in a given application. Of course, this way you will loose out on any scripts for general usage, or applications you would not even be aware of. Secondly, I find that many developers seem to spread their scripts a bit here and there. They might have changed service provider, and not bothered cleaning up their old stuff. For instance, when searching for: Jaws Scripts Thunderbird, I found a handful or two of webpages offering such scripts. When checking them out, at least a few of them, I found that they would hold different versions of what seemed to be pretty much the same script. One was dated from 2009, the next from 2010, and you get the idea. smiles. This way, it could be really hard for the end-user to know, and ensure, that he is running the most up-to-date version of the scripts. And what's more, should the user experience any issue with the script, it might be hard to get the most recent assistance from others, since you don't know if their experience is anything more recent. it occurs to me, that this really is not much in the interest of the developer either, since he would have much better success in bringing users to town, did he ensure the people would know where to get the script, and how to obtain the latest. Thirdly, I do see a few developers who seemingly have created a handful of scripts. In such cases, you might want to browse their individual homepage, to see what they can offer you. Depending on how well the homepage is designed, and exactly how well it is being maintained, you will be more or less lucky with your hunt and seek. Even, should you find a script, all current and up-to-date, you download and install it - but does Jaws have any feature the developer can set, to have the script auto-update? Or, will you be left to do another chasing on the net, next week, to see if you are all current? And what if you have ten scripts, you might have to spend a whole morning in tracing any new updates? Or, would any experienced Jaws user please chime in here, and inform us all of their general experience on the matter. The little I have seen of Jaws as of yet - still not been offered the transmission locally - it seems to me, Jaws is on a state where WE was close to ten years ago. Much could have been said, and was expressed, about the needs for further improvement on the WE interface and functionality. But even more could be said about the Jaws menus, features and definitely script availability, far as I have experienced from the demo running. Guess we all have a learning curve, but to a degree, I'd say much of that curve is to climb down from the high level of Win-Eyes, and reset to what our screen reader was like a handful of years ago. Again, I know it was not much encouraging news, but at least it might give some of you a clue what to expect when comes to scripts for Jaws. And for anyone who has the skills and resources, a genious idea would have been to open a web-service offering Jaws scripts. Wonder if people even would have been willing to pay a dollar or two annual fee, for having such a service running. At least, if it would be acknowledged and honored by the developers. As it stands, seemingly a lot of scripters out there, are doing a kind of "let me develop something for my own good, and see if anyone else happen to find it, or even bother using it." For some developers that might be perfect, but for many of us who have been scripting under WinEyes, the idea of having a product that actually makes the day for a number of users, really have been much of the spurring driver behind the whole project. It's like cooking for yourself, as compared to cooking a real rare roast for your whole family party. RE: where do I go?
That tab tab business annoyed me, too. Here's how to get rid of those pesky announcements. First, press insert-6 (on the number row) to bring up settings center. Then, press ctrl-shift-d (to bring up the default settings). You'll be in an edit box where you can search. Type l a b into the box and then press tab. You'll be on a list item that says "key labels". Press space on that, and you'll get a list of most of the keys that JAWS knows about. You can use first-letter navigation, so, type t and the first thing you'll hear is "tab, tab, speak". Press space on that, and it will change to mute. You can use up and down arrows to find any keys you want their labels changed. When you've made all the changes you want, tab to the OK button and press space on it. Next, tab over to the Apply button. Then, you can press alt-f4 to exit settings center. There's a demonstration of doing this on FSCast. The link is a little messed up on the FSCast page, but, I figured out what the problem was. Here's a direct link to the podcast. Re: where do I go?
Maybe many of you will not be aware of this, but Jaws and NVDA actually have some quick-keys for setting key echo. If memory serves me right, try hitting Insert-2, the 2 on your main keyboard, and the key echo should change to "word", which will be the answer to one of the initial queries. Just thought to let you all know. And, first you are at it, it doesn't hurt to test what other features will be attached to the Inser-key, along with the number row on your keyboard. One good news, which you all will love to be reminded, is that Jaws is similar to WinEyes, in that Inser-1, will open the keyboard help mode. Once activated, go ahead and press any key-combination your brain could ever come up with. It won't change anything in your screen reader, but sure will give you a good feeling of some of the most daily used features. Anyone called for some hands-on tutoring? Can't be anything more hands-on, and it will be totally free of charge. Smiles. A good place to start out. Still, if anyone please could inform if there is a quick set of mouse-moving keystrokes, I am sure people here would love to learn. open the utility menu and then settings. find keyboard then keyboard label manager. then go to each key and press the space bar on them to mute them. you have to do this with all the keys you want muted. -Original Message- From: Jim via Talk Sent: Thursday, May 18, 2017 1:07 PM To: Window-Eyes Discussion List Subject: where do I go? Hi there PEOPLE! Just got JAWs downloaded and installed. Question, Where do I go to turn off the tab announce, the up/down announce and the space announce? Also, is there mouse keys that I can read the screen with? How do I go about reading the screen using JAWs? And finally, how do I set it to say the words after typing them instead of speaking each letter? Re: where do I go?
Hi Jim: OK. To answer your question about the mouse keys, you have to go into JAWS Cursor mode. If you have a keyboard with a numberpad, press the numpad minus key. Yoou can read the document by pressing JAWSKey+ down arrow. The JAWSKey is either the numpad insert key, if you have a numberpad, or the capslock key. I forget whre you set it, so I'm not much help there. I cannot answer your other questions. Kevin Huber On 5/18/17, Jim via Talk wrote: > Hi there PEOPLE! > > Just got JAWs downloaded and installed. Georges You'll need to be using a different sound device for your speech. Then you can direct it to that device, with headphones coming out of it, via the synthesizer setting dialogue. RE: Where are the informed comentators?
Hi: A lot of folks swear by JAWS simply because they'vee always used it and it has done what they need. I bought WE because it did what I wanted, was cheaper, and I liked the licensing model, e.g. they did not use copy protection, meaning they trusted me, as a user, not to give copies away to someone else. I have respected that trust. I have used JAWS at my previous job, and, apart from learning the differences between the products, had no serious issues with either one. There are things one product does better than the other, but, over all, I can work with either one. I do like Window-Eyes' approach to screen review better than JAWS', because, in JAWS, you have to switch from PC cursor to JAWS cursor to do any kind of screen review. Window-Eyes, on the other hand, expects you to use the separate arrow keys to do actual movement, but, the numeric pad to do any reviewing of the screen. If you are in JAWS, and are using the JAWS cursor and try to use the separate set of arrow keys to move around a document or Web page, things do not work as expected, because you haven't gone back to PC Cursor. The JAWS method of things seems to harken back to the days of the old PC keyboard without the separate arrow keys, where the arrow keys were in conjunction with the numpad. But, if it's all you're used to, you know it anyway and work with it. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+joseph.norton=gmail@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Nick Sarames via Talk Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2017 9:12 PM To: Andre ; Window-Eyes Discussion List ; 'Sky Mundell' Subject: Re: Where are the informed comentators? What made you think they ever expected to continue the window-eyes product. I don't believe that was ever in the cards. Why on earth would they sell two screen readers. Of course they'll sell you current version of window-eyes, and they'll likely sell you a s m a. If you're willing to give them money, why not. Freedom's customer support has been terrible over the years, so no jaws for me. 73 Butch WA0VJR Node 3148 Wallace, ks. RE: Where are the informed comentators?
Enterprise compliance? Hmm, silly play on words! It's all good; after all, a secretary, unless such a one works for government, is an Administrative Assistant. Got to love that! When GW Micro was alive and well, the company always went overboard to help me make Window-Eyes work with whatever app I needed for work purposes. This is one huge reason why I prefer Window-Eyes over Jaws! Another reason: I don't have to deal with a DONGLE and I could install Window-Eyes on more than two or three computers. The SMA were generous and, back in its hay days, an LTO was in place. There also wasn't any price differential between a standard and a pro license. In that regard, I did not feel cheated! But, this is reality: Whatever CSUN or CMoon may say in March--whatever ATIA may conjure--whatever the various Conventions may whisper in my ears--I remain ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN beyond allthings else that Window-Eyes is no longer dying, it is dead and I am just skinning it to smitherings for purposes of scientific experiment. RE: Where are the informed comentators?
I think that both jaws and window-eyes are really great screen readers. The thing you need to take in to consideration is what things does jaws do that window-eyes can't do. And the same thing when it comes to window-eyes. I have used the window-eyes for office version and while I noticed some differences with window-eyes and jaws, I noticed that when I used jaws and when I used the mail app for windows10 I noticed that the inbox would focus with jaws. But when using the mail app for windows 10 with Window-eyes the mailbox would not focus. While I asked about this on the list when it came to window-eyes and the mail app, I still haven't emailed aisquared support on this issue, which I will do after this message. Re: Where are the informed comentators?
Hello List, I was starting to feel status quo and then the topic came up again. The depressing thing is that it presents a sad reality. According to linkedin Aaron Smith works for VFO in a role called "enterprise Compliance." Not really sure what that is, but here is an interesting definition... deloitte.wsj.com/riskandcompliance/files/2013/07/EnterpriseCompliance.pdf f Result details Enterprise compliance is a coordinated approach to compliance spanning multiple businesses, organizational units, and geographies, enabled by people, processes, and technology. You can surf for even more interesting/scary definitions, but the thing I'm taking away is that VFO is looking out for their interests and definitely doesn't care about us. And I doubt they even care if we don't purchase Window-Eyes or jowls. The thing that annoys me is that VFO probably won't develop one more major upgrade for W-e which would give me an install disk for 9.5.4 and beyond. Since this recent fix was not a major upgrade they will send a disk for $20 probably or a link to the upgrade assuming you have an alternate screen reader or sighted assistance to install it. I guess you have to have an older disk, install it, then if it is earlier than the certificate issue install 9.5.4 that you have save to a (non-install) disk. fortunately I have W-E disks back to 7.5+-. When I spoke with the VFO ?support? person she said she gets lots of calls from W-e users. I'm guessing VFO is trying to figure out the best way to deal with a large group of displaced users. I suspect that in the narrow noncompetitive market they can do whatever they want and are just trying to assess the risks. I'm hoping that at C-sun people will be asking questions and that answers will appear on various lists or maybe even an announcement from VFO (not holding my breath). I'm hoping NVDA continues to improve for my win7 machine. Perhaps for win10 narrator will be like voiceover is to the mac. And since GW used to work with Microsoft, I wonder if the MS accessibility folks will try to include W-e features - one can hope. In this case, we can't vote at the polls since we have no vote that would count at that table. We must vote with our wallets. Vote with our voices on blogs. Vote simply by not supporting (if possible) any future products produced by VFO. That may not be as possible as I would like since they have eliminated much of the competition thereby destroying much of the consumer's choice. This country through its laws was supposed to support especially minority groups being oppressed (and oppressed isn't even as strong a word than the one I wanted to use). But anyway does any one really feel supported by AISquared which really know doesn't exist now? It's all VFO. A real merger would allow for the existence of AISquared, but it seems to be apparent to me that this was nothing other than a complete buyout. Hopefully there will be true alternatives to JAWS. I know NVDA is out there, Narrator and Voiceover for the Mac. But Narrator and NVDA would really have to come up a lot to even get anywhere close to where Window-Eyes was. We'll have to lend some support to the NVDA developers via donations. We all have to make our own business decisions and what works best for each of us. There isn't another company like GW Micro was. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+stepserve=comcast@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Sky Mundell via Talk Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2017 3:04 PM To: 'Dave Bahr'; 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: RE: Where are the informed comentators? Re: where is the search box
The Windows key should place you in the Cortana search box. If it doesn't then something is wrong. From that search box all I have to do is Shift-Tab once to Start, and arrow down to open the list of programs. Then I can press a single letter to go to that group of programs. But with that having had been said, I went through a lot of house cleaning on the start menu in Windows 10. For the most part it was in settings, Personalization, Start. I pretty much turned everything off. The privacy settings are also in the settings window. Open the settings window with Windows-I. If you're running the Windows 10 anniversary update you'll come in on a search box. Shift-Tab once to move up to the list view and then arrow right/left through the main categories. Hi Jim, I can't speak to the Chess game, but if you look in the start menu, look under the M group for Microsoft Solitaire Collection. Hi there FOLKS! I received the windows 10 update and it appears to be working very well for the most part. Question, after getting this update, two games that I play rather frequently are now gone not only from the desktop, but they seem to have completely disappeared from my system. They are the default solitaire game and one other called ches titans. Since the only real change to my system was the update would anyone happen to know where they might have went? Yes, I checked the recycle ben and no they weren't there. I even went as far as to check for their particular folders and again couldn't find them. Any ideas on what I might try next..? Hi there FOLKS! Sorry about the limitted subject, but I just received the Win10 upgrade yesterday and for the most part love it! Question, I had a solitaire game as well as a chess game on my desktop before the upgrade. Since then those two games have been missing from my desktop and I am totally unable to find them anywhere else on my system..? Just wondered if anyone might have any ideas on where they may have gone? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! a little off-topic, but not sure where else to write
I have a really old computer game made by a probably now defunct company called BSC Games called Hunter. I have been able to set it up on my new computer, but I am not able to register it. I’m also noticing that the left and right arrow keys work in reverse. Without registering it, I can’t get beyond the first four levels, and it’s only good for fifteen days. When I attempt to go to their web site, I don’t think there’s anything there now. Am I out of luck re registration, or is there a different place to do this? No really big deal. I certainly have enough other stuff to do. It is, however, kind of fun to play it once in a while, and I’d like to try it on my newest machine. Any ideas? I think that the calls being discussed here are the calls purporting to come from Microsoft, not Talks. When I first got these calls they said they were from Microsoft but with later calls they did not make that claim. If you let them have a remote connection they will install bad things on your computer then charge you to remove them. Re: Annoying Window Technical Service Calls from India or where ever
I had a friend who got one of these calls and he doesn't even have a computer. They know nothing except that they will manage to find a few suckers in every so many that they call. That can reap them a lot of money even if it's only one in a thousand. If I have the time, I like to waste their time. Otherwise, I tell them that I have no computer so it's obviously a scam. It generally leaves them dumbfounded. Then I hang up. Our company's IT administrator even gets these calls on his cell phone while driving. It is all just a scam, nothing to do with your real computer -- unless you make a mistake and let them remotely connect. -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+robin.van.lant=key@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Steve Jacobson via Talk Sent: Monday, June 27, 2016 3:37 PM To: 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: RE: Annoying Window Technical Service Calls from India or where ever Dave, When you played along with them, you probably got upgraded to their "Call more often" list. If you just start hanging up on them, they will probably downgrade you to a "Call now and then" list and eventually they will stop. I think it is unlikely that they are calling because they get notified when you start your system, it is probably just coincidence, but it can't hurt to do a full virus and malware scan if you feel strongly that they are somehow being notified. They are going to try to call when they think they are most likely going to get a human being answering. In general, I don't play along with any scammers or spammers, even when it is tempting. At the very least, you may indicate to them that you are worth contacting again, and you could give information to them without meaning to. It's funny that this thread should arise at this time, because I just got off the phone with a friend who has gotten a couple of these calls. the thing is, he doesn't even have a computer, and when he told them of this, the guy actually had the effrontery to ask him in an incredulous voice, "then what do you do with your time?" Needless to say, that is when my friend just hung up the phone. Re: OT: Annoying Window Technical Service Calls from India or where ever
We got so many robo and scam calls, that we silenced the ringer on our land line and gave our friends and business callers our cell numbers. we only use our land line for calling out and check the answer machine once a day. Have to keep the land line, because of our bundle with ?Comcast. Works well. www.harmonicaworkshops.com www.woodeneyemusic.com On Mon, 27 Jun 2016 16:15:26 -0500 Don H via Talk wrote: > If you google this subject you will see this a wide spread scam. I have also suffered from these calls. They simply kept on coming back even though it was clear I wasn't interested. I found a technique which worked in the end, see the conversation below. Me "Please give me your name and the company you work for" Them "Why" Me "Because I am going to call the police on my other phone while you are on my line" That did it. And it happens when you turn on your computer? I don't like that. That sounds like somebody has gotten into your computer, somehow. Most of those calls come randomly, not like yours. The people don't know if your computer is on or not, usually. Re: Annoying Window Technical Service Calls from India or where ever
I tell them that's a pretty good trick, considering I don't even have a computer connected to the internet, grin. They usually hang up and only call back occasionally. My sister played along with them one time and kept them on the phone for 20 minutes. After one step, he asked her what was on her computer screen. She told them nothing. The man was puzzled for a minute. She replied that she didn't have a computer and that she just had a desire to annoy him the same way he had annoyed her. He never called back. I hope this gives at least one person a smile. Carol On 6/27/2016 4:37 PM, Loy via Talk wrote: I get these as well, I just hang up on them.
