I believe so. Someone else will have to verify that, and they don't
appear to be in plain text though. You can, however, open your Address
Book, highlight an entry and Ctrl+C to copy it in LDIF format. Copy
one and paste it into a text file to see what I mean.

P.S. If you want to get rid of the [n] in your reply's subject (but
you certainly don't have to), you can place %SingleRe some where in

Sorry I couldn't help you more on that; I guess my mail turned out to
not be very helpful AND turned out to be possibly insulting. I hope I

I've used Palm before, but I've never really been that deep into it.

One of our moderators, Marck D. Pearlstone, is responsible for the FAQ
and the software that produces it. He should be applauded for all of
his hard work, indeed. :-) I could not imagine how much time he's
spent helping all of us on- and off-list. (Let's not forget many many
others! Hopefully you'll get a chance to get to know them if you get
to know TB!.)

RM> So, I appoligize for messing up ;) the list. I thought that just

Yep. :-) Most email clients (RFC friendly ones, at least) use
In-Reply-To and References headers to do that sort of thing. Use the
key combination Ctrl+Shift+K, or go to View -> RFC-822 headers, and
have a look at the "Kludges."

If there's something you're wanting to do and you can't figure it out,
ask the list because chances are it can be done. I haven't really
wanted for much since I started using TB! last October.

Anyway, I created a form with the action

I don't think so. This has been on the Wish List for a long time, I
believe. We had a discussion a long time ago (check the archives)
about using stunnel (server-side), but would only be of any use to
those who administer their own mail server(s).

In the Transport \ Authentication section of your account properties,

Ritlabs SecureBat! - suggestions

2001-06-22 Thread Brian Clark

Hello Ritlabs SecureBat! developers,

I'm using Ritlabs SecureBat! Version 1.53bis/iKey1000
  Serial Number 0266E-08A55
  under Windows 98 4.10 Build A .

There are some features I would like to see in your program:

A hot-key assigned to Show/Hide connection center.

Some people, like myself, may have connection center always on
hide. When there is a problem (For example, I can't close the
application when it's trying to connect to a mail server that
cannot be reached), I have to:

1) Go to Options -> Preferences
2) Select Always from the list.
3) Hit OK.
4) Hit Abort.

Then, when the problem has corrected itself, later, go through the
same process to hide it once again.

A Show/Hide toggle shortcut would make this process *much* easier.

Unless, of course, I've overlooked an existing shortcut?

Regards,
  Brian Clark

Yes, you can join PGP-Basics, which has a How-To graciously provided

IMHO, I feel as if "Smart Matching" best describes its former state.
Now, it's forcing me to change address book entries and manually pick
out keys while using what is supposed to be a seamless plug-in. Surely
this can be some sort of option in TB!'s plugin options called "Use

How fast is your machine? (that's not an insult) TheBat! is probably
the fastest application on this machine and the editor opens lightning
fast. My processor is mid-range to slow (depending on who you talk to)
these days, PII 400, but I have a lot of ram and very very fast disks.
If the editor is taking 3 to 5 seconds to open, I tend to think that's
abnormal.

Marck's signature is actually only three lines, but, as a moderator,
he PGP signs his messages to the list (the same can be said for

OK, then that needs to be made perfectly clear some where - on either

It seems as if that were true (DLL and Registry entries needing to be
updated), that we'd be having big problems moving through all of these
betas that only come packed with a new executable. I can understand
the help file updates, but I haven't had (crossing fingers) really any

SECURITY.NNOV: The Bat! bug

2001-04-19 Thread Brian Clark

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Greetings TB! Users,

In case any of your aren't on BugTraq (likely for the majority?), this
was sent in a while ago.

I haven't attached the original file attachment for obvious reasons,
so if anyone is interested in it, I can send it to any of you
privately. Note the work-around towards the bottom.

(I'm hoping this has already been addressed in the latest Betas.)

==
Subject: SECURITY.NNOV: The Bat! bug
 Author: 3APA3A <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
  Dated: Wednesday, April 18, 2001
  Files: badmess.zip
==

There is more fun then security impact in this issue, but it's a kind
of DoS and can give a lot of headache to postmasters.

=---8<--

SECURITY.NNOV URL: http://www.security.nnov.ru
Topic: The Bat! bug
Application:The Bat! 1.51 (latest)
Vendor: RitLabs
Category: Denial of Service
Risk Factor:Low
Remote: Yes
Vendor Contacted: 13.04.2001
Software URL: http://www.thebat.net
Vendor URL:http://www.ritlabs.com

+Introduction:

The Bat! Is very convenient commercially available MUA for Windows
 with lot of features.

+Details:

While RETRiving message via POP3 (IMAP isn't tested) The Bat!
incorrectly processes 0x0D (CR) character if it's not followed by
0x0A (LF). The Bat! incorrectly calculates end of the message and the
part of message is treated as reply from POP3 server. The Bat! fails
to receive the rest of the messages and fails to delete received
messages from server. This leads to DoS against user's POP3 account.
Malformed message can emulate any POP3 server replies.

+Exploitation:

Extract attached "badmessage" and send it, e.g. using

cat badmessage | sendmail -U [EMAIL PROTECTED]

or copy it to user's mailbox.
This message causes The Bat! to show something like:

!13.04.2001, 17:51:01: FETCH - Server reports error. The response is: --ERR Wrong
User: replace user with your system administrator--

message is crafted to do not contain this text somewhere in the body.

+Workaround:

use "Dispatch Mail on Server" feature to delete malformed message
from server or use different MUA.

+Solution:

 No yet.

+Vendor:

RitLabs was contacted on April, 13 (happy Easter to you, guys). No
 feedback yet.

This advisory is being provided to you under RFPolicy v.2 documented
at http://www.wiretrip.net/rfp/policy.html.

I can understand that. Then I would just go ahead and change the
subject to reflect the original thread's topic. You might want to make
a note, after doing that, that you're in digest mode, etc etc., so
people don't give you the "You broke the thread!" speech. :)

a> I understand others place a great deal of importance on threading

Yep, well the only big deal about it is that sometimes someone answers
a question, you don't see the reply out-of-thread message that
provided an answer, then you go ahead and answer - only to find out 15
minutes later that you re-hashed out what someone's already explained.

That usually doesn't happen on these lists though.

I hope you feel better! Being sick stinks. :(

Both, actually. It breaks the threading and it changes the subject to

Go to View -> View Threads By and play around a little bit. You'll
eventually get what Nick is trying to say.

If you open a message, copy all of the text, create a new message,
then paste that text in there, you've effectively started a new
thread.

For example, lets say before you do that you see (in your message
list):

[-] Frank went to town [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12:28 AM
|__ Re: Frank went to[EMAIL PROTECTED] 6:00 PM
|__ Re: Frank went tosomeoneelse@exampl 8:00 Mars Time
||__ Re: Frank went  [EMAIL PROTECTED]March 23 1985
|__ Re: Frank went to t [EMAIL PROTECTED]Feb 35 1969

And then you decide to reply to that thread by creating a new message.
This is what you'll get when your message comes in:

Re:Frank went to town[EMAIL PROTECTED] 1:35 AM
[-] Frank went to town [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12:28 PM
|__ Re: Frank went to[EMAIL PROTECTED] 6:00 PM

||__ Re: Frank went  [EMAIL PROTECTED]March 23 1985
|__ Re: Frank went to t [EMAIL PROTECTED]Feb 35 1969

And if you sent your message half a day behind the last message in
that thread, your message ends up getting separated by tens of
messages, possibly:

Re:Frank went to town[EMAIL PROTECTED] 1:35 AM
[+] Hopeless in Seattle [EMAIL PROTECTED]time

No, not just changing the subject alone, but it is *rarely* needed. if

AFAIK, this is done by the client used by the individual who sent the
email. I do not believe anything is wrong with The Bat!. IOW, the same
can be said about a site that is composed of badly written HTML. If
your browser can't display the page correctly because of the broken
HTML, it wouldn't (in most cases) mean that your browser is broken.

OK, maybe I misunderstood what you were talking about.

I'm working in 'View Folder' mode (no preview). When I read a message
it's usually from the [buggy] Ticker. I hit Ctrl+O, read the message
[if it opens]. I hit Alt+J Esc if I want to keep it, and Del if I don't.

When I hit Del earlier, then went back and checked the attachments
folder to see if what you mentioned was true, I don't see any left
over attachments.

I don't have any HTML mail over here at the moment to check the
context menu, so I can verify the greyed out Delete menu there.

I suppose your reasoning behind doing that is to be able to tell "who

You can, depending on how you're using your templates. Folder level

remove the folder level for each folder that you want to use the

  2) Delete by using a incoming or read filter or manual filter.

Those are equivalent.

If I need to read it again, I'll have to get it out the trash. Tab,
Arrow Down, Tab, Arrow Up or Down, then Enter -- and The mouse is
worse for someone who uses the keyboard 95% of the time. :)

I never knew I could make Undo so complicated. ;)

Ahh, but it's not, because there's Ctrl+Z^H^H^H...

Click once on your account name in the account/folder pane. Right
click once on the bar at the top of the columns in your message list
window. Adjust them there.

Then whenever you create a new folder (or when you right click on the
folder and go to properties), put a check mark beside "Use the account
default column settings."

Some lists I archive by 'Exporting the message to a file' (by
appending) in my incoming filters. If I'm sure I'm finished with it
for the moment, I delete it because I'll have an archived backup copy.

But for those brain-farts I have often, I hit Del, then realize I
shouldn't have done that so I have to go digging in the trash. :)

Sure it's just a matter of going to the trash and opening it it. It's
really no big deal. My main reasoning for speaking up about this is
really because I was just surprised, for the pound of gold TB! is (as
in features, not currency), that it doesn't have that (pretty
standard, IMO) feature.

It doesn't bug me too much really.

Here's two more parens just for good measure: ()

(You never can have too many in one email message.)

Now, this is something that I just can't seem to grasp. Why is there
no undo except from within the editor? I remember asking this question
when I first became a TB! user (around 1.47 Halloween? Maybe slightly
before).

IOW, what harm would there be in allowing a user to delete a message,
then hit Ctrl+Z if they deleted the wrong one (which happens often -
especially since some of us get hundreds of pieces of email in a day).

It's almost like RIT forgot to add an undo.

Well, I suppose that's wasn't entirely clear. If you're *not* using
PGP Tray, TB! calls pgplog.exe to display the signature verification,
and displays the decrypted message in the message list separate from
the original. But as far as TB! displaying the verified signature
information in-line (like Valid, Invalid, Good, etc), TB!'s plugin
doesn't do that (yet).

As for PGP Tray's use in verifying signatures, depending on which
version of PGP you're using, you'll get a pop up window with the
decrypted message *and* signature information. But, then you're not
using TB!'s plugin at all.

This has been a long time annoyance, and I think some (including
myself) have sent this to RIT as a suggestion. You might want to send
it in as a feature request too - er, something. The developers seem to
be very busy people, but I'm assuming they actually read all of their
mail.

A work around is to use an address book handle for that contact.

Example:

First Name: Christian
Last Name: Stiller
Nick: chris
Address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then in the To field, just type chris and hit Tab. That way you don't
have to worry about case (there, at least).

Weird icon effects

2001-03-14 Thread Brian Clark

Hi TB!UDL,

This is just a follow up on the subject of the weird icon effects some
people were seeing (black or white instead of what one should be
seeing).

I don't know why I didn't think of this before (I don't think anyone
suggested it. If so, I apologize for the redundant post), but this
just happened to me for the first time ever. I just rebuilt the icon
cache and that fixed it.

You can do this with TweakUI (from the M$ site) or you can use this
8kb executable:

"RebIC"

Still, one very annoying aspect of the send dialog is that if you
minimize it, it won't stay there for good. When you send out another
email, up it pops to the foreground once again. I'm getting tired of
Alt-Tab, Esc, Alt-Tab (However, I'm between 21.6 - 26.4 kbps on

I also noticed that the second step in the second example I gave

Try, with the window in focus (or you think is in focus):

Alt once
Down arrow twice
Enter once
Then use the arrow keys to move the window on screen.

Or:

Alt once
Left arrow once.
Down arrow twice

For lists that do not set the Reply-to header, the reply is made out
to the sender. This is the reason some lists' templates have to be
created at the folder level. If you do that, you just have to be
careful, and get used to looking at the To field. I have around 4
lists that have folder level templates.

I suppose one could always stick %To='' at the top of every template
so that they'd be forced to type in the address manually (or use a
handle).

I just went with folder templates, and I try to be careful.

This is quite a step up, but if you needed something hefty, you could

 http://www.oac.uci.edu/indiv/ehood/MHonArc/doc/faq/envs.html#platforms

Under windows, you're probably going to need to install Active

That may be a whole lot of trouble just for a simple mail archive

I'm not known to regularly defrag my hard disk. :) I think I've done
it 3 times in 2 years or so, maybe longer. I'd rather leave that sort
of thing alone. It seems like in the past, when I tried to do more
house-cleaning, it did more harm that good (or so it seemed).

I didn't mean to sound like I was terribly worried that TB! would
trash the Operating System -- I'm far more worried about losing any
archived mail. I do, however, backup all of my mail every other day,

This has me a little worried. I seem to recall that people who
regularly compress their folders have had problems in the past after
a disk defrag. Do you guys and gals think this is something to worry
about? I don't think I've defragged my hard disk since I've installed
TB!, but I do compress on every exit.

As a matter of fact, soon after my father installed TB! his computer
wouldn't boot one morning, and I had go over and reinstall Windows.
It turns out, he regularly runs scandisk and defrag.

I have no earthly idea if this was directly related to TB! and folder
 compression.

My mail to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> a few days ago bounced back, as well. The
forward someone has on that address is the one that actually bounced,
I think, but I don't remember the specific address.

I didn't save the email, but I tried sending a notification to info@
and it bounced, too.

I assumed it eventually made it through, because I haven't gotten
anymore 'undeliverables.'

Just a few alternatives:

You can also use Ctrl + *(on the num pad) to expand all threads, and
you can simply hit Esc to display all messages.

As for expanding and retracting threads, you can use the left and

I think you meant Ctrl+Shift+Alt+/ for US/UK.

I think I may be losing my mind. Is it me or did RIT remove this
feature in the undocumented, unofficial, mirrored, non-rar 1.49d Beta?

I can now press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+/ and nothing happens.

Another option *might* be to do it in the registry for a quick fix.

Better make sure TB! is closed and make sure you backup your TB!
folder and registry keys. I'd back up the whole
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT tree first. You never know what'll
happen.

I'm not positive that this is the registry key for this particular
function, but look under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!

In the right pane, scroll down to "Simple Menus" and modify that value
to 0 if it's set to 1.

You can either include it in a template using (I think) %INCLUDE or

alternative would be to Edit -> Paste From...
