Hi,

AT Ritlabs just sent me an email:
AT What's new in The Bat! 2.10?

[snip: program change list from the original version 2.10.00 release
announcement]

That's not it. I wondered if anybody would mention it here, and so Bob
Morris did. The day after the release of the 3.2 megabyte download of
version 2.10.00, version 2.10.01 was released and its size is 3.8 MB.
There were no obvious changes between the two. I reckoned that
'somebody had forgotten something' in the original release :)

Incremental backups

2004-04-21 Thread johnny . skaaning
Hi all,

I've always used complete backups. Partly because I don't understand
how incremental backups work. If I work up 50 incremental
backups and want to restore them all, is this process as tedious as I
fear - that is, done one by one ? Or can it be automatized somehow ?
Do they have any advantages apart from the obvious gain in time of
execution ?

PK What you are thinking is called differential backup.
PK Incremental backup always backs-up from the last full backup i.e. to
PK restore you have to run the full backup and the last incremental backup.
PK You should be able to find out the details in you backup program help file.
PK After some search I found this the best at that time:
[snip]

Thanks for your detailed description. I did a lousy job of explaining
myself and I didn't know the right terminology. I am talking about
backing up the mail bases of TB via the inbuilt backup function - not
general backups with other software. I just checked, and in TB what I
referred to as incremental is actually called an 'update to existing
archive'.

Ok, I'd written some more questions here but now Leif G. just replied

Mother of all common folders Autocomplete cycler wanted

2004-04-19 Thread Johnny Skaaning
Hi all,

What determines the 'mother account' of a common folder ? I've got 4
or 5 accounts and I've noticed that one specific account is used for
sending messages from common folders. Consequently messages sent from
such folders end up in the sent folder of an account which used to be
my main account, but today is a minor account that I hope to stop
using at some point. Is there a way to control this behaviour ?

Another thing I've wondered about is whether the autocomplete results
of the address field can be cycled somehow? You know, when I write the
beginning of an address and autocomplete kicks in, often it picks one
of several addresses beginning with that string - and often not the
one I am looking for :) So far I've just had to keep on filling in the
address until the string becomes unique. But I really like
autocomplete and I miss a way to cycle through the results of
autocomplete. Is it there ?

Hi Jan,

JR1-3 are not marked read (meaning I have to go check them). Only on a
JR very rare occasion do I find legit email in my junk folder.
JR Can any of you Bayesit fans explain this to me? I'm not be cute
JR here. Maybe I'm missing something.

I think the explaining is on your part :) Or maybe we're not receiving
the same amount or type of spam ? Before Bayesit (just a month or two
ago in my case) I was constantly trying to keep up with spam, adding
strings to my spam filter as best I could. Only to find it an
impossible and very tedious battle against new permutations of spam.

Maybe you've got some tips you'd like to share about how to set up a
filter that needs little or no maintenance?

Bayesit has saved me from thinking about it. I didn't even believe it
would work, but it came in TB 2.04 and seemed to kill most spam
without my doing anything. I receive 30 spam mails pr. day on average.

2.1 bugs

2004-04-17 Thread Johnny Skaaning
Hi all,

I just joined this list to check if there was any commotion about the
2.10 release of The Bat! The following is pasted from the online
archive of this list: [from John Phillips, Sydney, Australia]

JPWhen starting up I get the following error message:-

JPCan't create folder c:\ProgramFiles\THEBAT!\Bayesit. Check that no
JPfile with such name exists or that access to the folder is
JPallowed.

JPMessage appears on installation and each start up session.
JPBayesit is loaded, apparently after the message is accepted (ie click on the
JPx in message window).

Exactly the same here John. The dialogue box with the error message
even gets hidden behind the startup logo. All there is to do is click
the logo and then click 'ok' .. then the program seems to strat
normally. I also deleted my previous Bayesit folder and now have to
live with the fact that several non-spam messages have been filtered
into the Junk Mail folder. Hope it's just an adjustment phase.

Also: could anybody using 2.10 try and create a virtual folder (I
picked one pointing to a physical folder with 3000+ messages) and then
try and delete it again ? Here it results in one or more 'access
violations' which seem to be benign in the sense that the
notifications can be clicked away without the program crashing.

Re: 2.1 bugs

2004-04-17 Thread Johnny Skaaning
Hi John,

J This can be avoided by installing another spam plug-in before doing
J the upgrade.

Don't really wish to do that. I hope there'll be a fix for this
problem. I can live with it for some time ... usually the program is
started once a day or the number of times a reboot is necessary.

J No had a problem here. The only thing I can think of off hand is the
J possibility that you're deleting the virtual folder before it's
J completely processed the physical/source folder messages?

No, but I've tested it some more now - it's a pretty specific error:
It happens ONLY with 'Common Virtual Folder' and ONLY if it has been
created from the 'Virtual' tab in the folder list window .. (The one
that now holds 4 tabs: 'All', 'unread', 'virtual' and one with my
nickname). If I create the exact same common virtual folder from the
'all' tab there is no problem. Anyway, there isn't really a problem.
It just doesn't look so good.

Re: AV - Virtual Folder related?

2004-04-17 Thread Johnny Skaaning
Hi Costas,

CP As a result of the AV no message could be seen in any of the folders.
CP I had to restart The Bat to be able to see them.

Similar experience here one time today. However, I am not sure whether
it was in connection with the AV I've described in previous posts, or
if it happened at another time: All messages appear gone - the
messagelist pane was just plain white, but randomly clicking in there
proved that the messages were still there. Plus, the AV I got was not
in a dll but in Thebat.exe.

Restarting TB solved it.

J My misunderstanding.. If I recall right, what you're describing was
J related to the shift from older/stand-alone BayesIt using the
J registry and the 'integrated' version not.

Ah, no. There's an issue now going from TB version 2.04.7 where
the Bayesit version is 0.4x to TB 2.10.00 where the Bayesit
version is 0.5. When you start TB , Bayesit complains about its
folder (where it keeps dictionaries and logs etc.) already existing.
When clicking 'ok' to this notice, everything seems to run ok though.
There was another guy here saying the same thing, so I trust it's not
just some weird local phaenomenon with me.

I've tried to report it through the 'bug report' and later as
'information request' through the links in the help menu of TB, but to
no avail. The messages come back with server errors. Ritlabs' server
might be sick, or they've hardcoded invalid email addresses?

 Hi Dave,

dcn I had the same problem briefly myself, all I did was go to
dcn preferencesplugins and remove the bayesit entry THEN I went
dcn through preferencesplugins again but this time selected 'add'
dcn and navigated to the new bayesit plugin, works here! ;-)

Hm. Can't get that to work. I've tried changing the directory too.
Works anyway if the Bayesit base directory is empty .. but as soon as
I do some spam/non-spam marking and the dictionary files get created,
I am back to square one with the startup problem. Are you sure your
Bayesit is actually working after you did that operation ?

I also tried completely removing TB, and change the mail directory to
somewhere else. As mentioned I also tried to have Bayesit in another
directory. Didn't help. Noticed also that the access flags on the
'base' directory inside the Bayesit folder has a greyed out 'read
only'. Maybe just the way it's supposed to, but what surprised me was
that I can't change it. Even when TB is not running?

Re: Scheduled Mail Checks Stopped Working

2002-08-26 Thread Johnny Skaaning

Hello Bob Curtis,

BC I know this was discussed previously and I believe the consensus was
BC that ZA was causing the problem of automated email checking
BC stopping.

I don't think there should be such a consensus. Rather a consensus
that the mailchecking problems might be caused either a) by some kind of
conflict with ZA or b) by conflicts not related to ZA that nobody has been
able to define.

I have experienced these problems with several versions of TB using
3 different firewalls as well as no firewall at all. There are other
users who like yourself have reported in this forum that they have a
similar problem without using ZA.

BC Is there any additional info regarding TB and auto checking not
BC working?

Nobody really figured anything out in this forum about the non-ZA
related type of problem, but now you have the problem you might follow
an earlier suggestion and check the log to see if there's any
indication that a mailcheck was actually attempted. Also, export the
TB part of the registry and we might be able to compare with the same
export from a machine that's working and find some explanation.

Unfortunately my standard sized (20k) logs have already lost that

Periodical checking stops working

Hello all,

BM It is a pity that you don't mention the version you are using in your

Yes, I know I should have while writing in this forum. I usually
switch on RFC-822 headers in the view menu to see which mailer is
used. My apologies. But then John Thomas said -

JT I found it very handy to show the mailer of all messages. I found
JT this is possible by selecting View, Message Header, Mailer. Based on
JT that information, he is using The Bat! (v1.61) Personal.

Which is certainly a more elegant way of checking which mailer is used
than switching on the full RFC-822 header :) Anyway, I've gotten used
to the RFC-822's recently because spam started arriving including what
looked like personally targeted viruses to me.

Thanks to you all for such a prompt response!

reinstallation. Next time it comes around I'll try to remember to
save that part of the registry :) I've now exported it while it works
ok.
