This is bewildering and can't find a solution... as stated before,
Outlook and PocoMail send immediately but TB takes exactly 15 seconds

It is a major disadvantage of server-side spam filtering and why I
have disabled this with my ISP.

The big advantage of Mailwasher is that you get to see a list of the
messages available and you can preview them if you like. It is you who
then decides whether to download the entire message. If you do
inadvertently delete a legitimate message, you do have a recycle bin
where you can recover all or part of the message. If you cannot
recover the message body, you can at least contact the sender and ask
 it be sent again.

I am not in favour of ANY system that classifies the messages and acts
on its own. I am currently in dispute with a client owing several
thousands of dollars. He uses Norton 360, and essentially you cannot
send him any e-mail that has a dollar sign in it, or refers to the
word dollar or any other terms that are part of an invoice. Norton 360
automatically deletes them and he does not want to change any settings
because he wants it to work that way. Basically this way he claims he
 never received anything.

Unfortunately, experience has shown that systems that automatically
classify mail and then download and file them away in a spam or junk
folder without any user intervention see the user rarely (if ever)
checking the spam or junk folder which is then automatically purged.
That being the case such systems are as bad as server-side filtering.

The user needs to be in control, and even then there needs to be some
 capability of recovery.

K9 simply adds the word SPAM (or whatever you tell it to add) to
the subject line *before* the message gets to TB!. It doesn't do
anything else (except learn from experience). Once the message
reaches your (my) inbox I have a filter set up which routes any
incoming message with the word Spam anywhere in the subject line
into a folder called amusingly enough, Spam. I then confirm that
they are indeed spam and manually delete them from the Spam folder.

Also each time you fetch your email you have to open K9 and tell it
which of the incoming messages are spam. From then on it will flag
(with the word Spam in the subject) any messages which match or
closely match the criteria it uses to identify spam.

I seem to recall that K9 is much more sophisticated that I'm making

forgotten just about everything I ever knew about it. That's why
it's important to read the information contained at the
http://keir.net/k9.html site and the discussions found in TB!'s archives.

TH I understand what you are saying except for one thing: K9 defines Spam
TH within the K9 program but does not tag emails with the word Spam upon
TH TB retrieving them so I do not understand what you are referring to by
TH the word spam in the subject heading. Can you further explain what
TH you mean by K9 inserting or tagging the subject headings with the word
TH spam so I can set TB to send these emails to a spam filter.

Well, first of all, after you installed K9 it should then
automatically appear as a capitol letter K lying on it's face
somewhere in the system tray every time you start your computer. If
the face-down capitol letter K isn't in your system tray, then K9
isn't running. Now, assuming that icon is present, double-click on
it and open K9. Once K9 is open, click on the CONFIGURATION tab.
You should see the upper-right section of that tab dedicated to:
Mark emails as Spam by... where you get to tell K9 how you want
spam messages marked. IIRC the default was simply SPAM. I
changed mine to show -SPAM- for some reason so that now whenever
K9 see an email it knows to be spam, it places -SPAM- in the
subject line of the email before it reaches TB!.

Once the email reaches TB!, my filter detects the -SPAM- in the
subject line and re-routes the email to my Spam folder.

 HTH,

TH Yes indeed, I see how this works and I like it!!! Thanks for your
TH help Jack.

I'm glad I was finally able to help somebody on this list instead
of the list helping me, as is usually the case.

I'm experiencing the same timed out delay of 15 seconds before TB
sends email with K9 installed. Do you experience the same delay? I was
wondering if there is a setting within TB that is delaying the sending
of email or if this is just K9?

Oh, Another thing, I don't quite understand it but like clockwork, TB
is taking exactly 15 seconds to send outgoing mail. Why 15, why not 2,
why not 3. What determines how long TB takes to send mail? I remember
several versions ago, TB would send mail almost immediately. This has
been going on for quite some time now upgrading to the newer versions
but I can't quite figure at what point this started happening.

Receiving is a different story, it's never the same... sometimes TB
retrieves mail almost immediately upon launching program and other
times the mail takes forever and a day for TB to process incoming
mail. This is very puzzling and if someone knows the answer I would be
forever in your debt to get this one straightened out. There's nothing
worse than to sit there waiting for TB to process outgoing email. I've
already isolated any anti-virus, spam or firewall program out of the
equation.

I have looked through my account log and actually found a recent sent

usually assume this kind of variation is due to the loading on the server,
which of course can vary from moment to moment.

Yes, receive is all over the board when TB is actually processing, but
there is definitely a time-out for several seconds before TB initiates
the actual processing of incoming email. I think if I could figure out
why TB is timing out at exactly 15 seconds before initiating the
processing of incoming mail, this may remedy my receiving it as
well.

Aside from the possibility of lots of bat*.tmp files (I don't know if
CCleaner deletes these) and having ruled out any complications with
anti-spam and anti-virus, what comes to mind is how you are connecting
to the server. Some servers allow you to send/receive through a
regular or a secure connection. If using a secure connection from TB!
to a particular server, are you also using a secure connection from
the other mail clients that connect faster?

An example is that TB! is set up to connect to one of my Yahoo
accounts via a regular connection and this often starts sending or
receiving within a 0-3 seconds. Another Yahoo account I have TB! set
up to contact the *same* servers via secure to dedicated port and
this usually starts sending in 12-15 seconds or receiving in 17-22

OK Tim, to find out if TB is really the culprit, and why, we need to repeat
the comparative tests with all paramaters exactly the same with all three
e-mail clients. I suggest therefore you try the download tests with all of
 the following in place:

  1. Your anti virus programme turned off.
Turned Off
  2. AntiSpamSniper and any other antispam programme turned off.
Turned Off
  3. All message filtering turned off.
Turned Off
  4. Any firewall programme turned off.
Windows Firewall Always Off... No Third Party Firewall... Using
Firewall in Router Only

To try to avoid any 'nasties' download first with your antvirus still
operating, but 'leave messages on the server'. Then run your tests as
quickly as possible thereafter with the antivirus turned off.

If you will be kind enough to do as I suggest and let us all know
the results we will then take it from there.
Here's the status of running this test. I sent a total of five emails
to myself and each one took exactly 15 seconds to send. This is very
odd... it appears TB has decided to time itself out until 15 seconds
has elapsed before processing outgoing mail. Before anyone jumps to
conclusions, my immediate send is selected. I did not run tests on
retrieving email.

  Good luck!

No. With delayed sending is enabled, you can get a dialog come up
telling you when the message will actually be sent. You can turn this
dialog off. It was a possibility that this dialog might have been
turned off and so there was an apparently a delay.

Under delivery type I have immediate and I have a check mark in
Combined Delivery (send and receive). This problem of very slow
sending and receiving has nothing to do with my smtp server or network
congestion with the server. I have tested all three of my email
clients, TB, Barca 2, and Outlook and TB wins the prize for taking the
longest (and I mean more than 1 minute longer) to send and receive
email. This problem started with version 4.1.

If anyone has any ideas other than what has already been discussed, I
would love to hear them.

Something unique to TB which maybe the culprit. :)

Maybe another question to ask is- how many and which tools check your
mail coming in? It really should in all cases be keept to the same set
of emails so you can really compare them properly!!
Ie, as you should be able to grab some emails which you know to be
clean resend them and switch all checking off...

I kept all mail on the server so each client was retrieving the same
emails and this made no difference in TB.

Font Size Different

Hello TBUDL,

After re-install of TB, the font size for all headings under my

initial install for as long as I can remember but TB would always fix
this almost

Salutation Grayed Out

2009-02-09 Thread Tim Hamm
Hello TBUDL,

I'm not sure this has to do with a corrupt install but weird things
are happening? For some reason my salutation and that of other
emails I receive are grayed out... unreadable.

Also, when reading emails, there used to be little tabs at the
bottom that you could click on for Text HTML etc., these have
  mysteriously disappeared after reinstalling TB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been (trying) to follow this thread, but nothing seems to be
 clear.

From my point of view, I have sent over a dozen e-mails since this was
reported where I have requested a reading receipt and I have received
a reading receipt from the recipients.

During this time I have also received around 6 messages where the
sender has requested a reading receipt. I have my system prompt me,
and I have it set to send one immediately rather than queue them in
the Outbox. All reading receipts that I have allowed have gone through
fine. Nothing has been left in the Outbox.

So maybe this needs to be clarified.

What is the situation that prompted this thread?

Is The Bat! requesting a reading receipt and one is not being
received? If this is the case, then it has nothing to do with The Bat!
and everything to do with the receiving system or recipient. They
receiving system may be blocking such requests (I have a relative
working for the Defence Department and the request for a reading
receipt is stripped off incoming messages), or the recipient might
have their system set to ignore such requests or is not sending them
on an individual basis. In either case there is nothing that The Bat!
 can do.

Is The Bat! not sending reading receipts? If this is the case then the
settings to respond to such a request have to be set correctly. The
Bat! has to be set to automatically send a receipt without asking, or
it has to be set to ask and then it must be allowed on an individual
 basis.

Is The Bat! queuing them in the the Outbox? If this is the case then
reading receipts need to be set to send them immediately.

Is there something else that is going wrong?

I can appreciate what you are saying, from what I know on my end,
these features have never worked as long as I have had TB. I would
think by now of the thousands of emails I have sent, at least one
recipient's email client should be able to send read receipts.

address book is stored in thebat.abd, but as I think, You must export

try Tab-delimited, if it is same format, or CSV and Netscape CSV.

You already have your Answer from Marek!

You export directly from the Adressbook into CSV Format, you can choose
this in the File Format Export To, as Marek told you - try TAB
 Delimited.

Do you have further Problems to Import this, feel free to Call again.

Then we will look for a solution, how to convert this to Comma-Seperated

The problem is that when the folder was lost, it was moved to a new

all pointing to the old location. Is there a way to mass edit these

Hmmm, how about moving all the messages from the old location to the

Sorting Office question

2008-05-28 Thread Tim Musson

I recently started using SubFilters and am getting some filtering I
don't understand...

I have a Filter called Set Color that does nothing and is set to
Continue processing with other filters, in it for example is a
SubFilter to change any message from family (based on AB group) to blue
in the message list. Yes, there are others, and they are all similar.

The next filter is The Bat! (configured exactly like my Set Color
filter) and it contains a SubFilter The Bat! lists which moves the
message to a folder.

Here is where it gets interesting! The SubFilter to move the message
is not set to Continue processing with other filters, but it does
continue processing the other filters!

If I have a TB list member in my AB, then my known filter at the end
takes precidence and moves it to Inbox-Known.

Any idea why that is happening or what I can do to fix it?

Can't confirm. You may have a different typeface than you are used
